Among asteroids there exist ambiguities in their rotation period determinations. They are due to incomplete coverage of the rotation, noise and/or aliases resulting from gaps between separate lightcurves. To help to remove such uncertainties, basic characteristic of the lightcurves resulting from constraints imposed by the asteroid shapes and geometries of observations should be identified. We simulated light variations of asteroids which shapes were modelled as Gaussian random spheres, with random orientations of spin vectors and phase angles changed every $5^\circ$ from $0^\circ$ to $65^\circ$. This produced 1.4 mln lightcurves. For each simulated lightcurve Fourier analysis has been made and the harmonic of the highest amplitude was recorded. From the statistical point of view, all lightcurves observed at phase angles $α< 30^\circ$, with peak-to-peak amplitudes $A>0.2$ mag are bimodal. Second most frequently dominating harmonic is the first one, with the 3rd harmonic following right after. For 1% of lightcurves with amplitudes $A < 0.1$ mag and phase angles $α< 40^\circ$ 4th harmonic dominates.
Using over 89 million astrometric observations of 349,737 numbered minor planets, an attempt was made to determine the masses of 230 of them by simultaneously solving for corrections to all orbital elements and the masses. For 132 minor planets an acceptable result was obtained, 50 of which appear to be new.
The Gaia Data Release 1 (GDR1) is a first, important step on the path of evolution of astrometric accuracy towards a much improved situation. Although asteroids are not present in GDR1, this intermediate release already impacts asteroid astrometry. Our goal is to investigate how the GDR1 can change the approach to a few typical problems, including the determination of orbits from short-arc astrometry, the exploitation of stellar occultations, and the impact risk assessment. We employ optimised asteroid orbit determination tools, and study the resulting orbit accuracy and post-fit residuals. Fo…
Lightcurve analysis of the asteroid 9021 Fagus observed at the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen during two apparitions in 2013 and 2017 are presented. This asteroid was observed in 2013 accidentally in the field of view in which our long-term target asteroid 901 Brunsia was positioned. A search of the Asteroid Lightcurve Database (Warner et al. 2009) did not find any previously reported results for the rotation period of 9021 Fagus. Unfortunately two nights observations in 2013 showed that the rotation period could be only approximately assumed. The observations during two ne…
Lightcurve of the asteroid 3634 Iwan observed at the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen in 2017 is presented. The asteroid was observed only one night, on 22 March 2017 accidentally in the field of view in which our target for shape modeling asteroid 289 Nenetta was positioned. The Asteroid Lightcurve Database (LCDB; Warner et al. 2009) did not contain any previously reported results for 3634 Iwan. If we accept that the ligtcurve of the asteroid is typical with two maxima and minima, a single night observations covers the whole rotational cycle. The lightcurve plotted by MPO Ca…
Kepler mission is a powerful tool in the study the different types of astrophysical objects or events in the distant Universe. However, the spacecraft gives also the opportunity to study Solar System objects passing in the telescope field of view. The aim of this paper is to determine for the first time the rotation periods of a number of asteroids observed by the Kepler satellite during the K2 Campaign 9. Using publicly available data from Kepler mission we have used the Modified Causal Pixel Model (MCPM) code to perform the aperture-like and PRF-like photometry of 1026 asteroids. The results…
The Gaia mission will provide the scientific community with high-quality observations of asteroids of all categories. The second release of Gaia data (DR2) was published in 2018 and consisted of 22 months of observations of 14,099 known Solar System objects, mainly asteroids. The purpose of this work is to obtain a catalogue of phase function parameters (H and G) for all the asteroids that are observed by the Gaia mission, and which were published in DR2. For this purpose, we introduced an algorithm capable of building this catalogue from the magnitude and UTC epoch data present in the DR2 dat…
In this work, we investigate the thermophysical properties of OSIRIS-REx target asteroid (101955) Bennu (hereafter, Bennu), where thermal inertia plays an important role in understanding the nature of the asteroid's surface, and will definitely provide substantial information for the sampling return mission. Using a thermophysical model incorporating the recently updated 3D radar-derived shape model \citep{Nolan2013} and mid-infrared observations of Spitzer-PUI, Spitzer-IRAC, Herschel/PACS and ESO VLT/VISIR \citep{Muller2012,Emery2014}, we derive the surface thermophysical properties of Bennu.…
We used 22 $μ$m (W4) Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) observations of 4420 asteroids to analyze lightcurves and determined spin period estimates for 1929 asteroids. We fit second-order Fourier models at a large number of trial frequencies to the W4 data and analyzed the resulting periodograms. We initially excluded rotational frequencies exceeding 7.57 rotations per day (P < 3.17 hr), which are not sampled adequately by WISE, and periods that exceed twice the WISE observation interval, which is typically 36 hr. Three solutions accurately capture the vast majority of the rotational fr…
In this paper we present the orbital elements of Linus satellite of 22 Kalliope asteroid. Orbital element determination is based on the speckle interferometry data obtained with the 6-meter BTA telescope operated by SAO RAS. We processed 9 accurate positions of Linus orbiting around the main component of 22 Kalliope between 10 and 16 December, 2011. In order to determine the orbital elements of the Linus we have applied the direct geometric method. The formal errors are about 5 mas. This accuracy makes it possible to study the variations of the Linus orbital elements influenced by different pe…
The Near-Earth Asteroid Thermal Model (NEATM, Harris, 1998) has proven to be a reliable simple thermal model for radiometric diameter determination. However NEATM assumes zero thermal emission on the night side of an asteroid. We investigate how this assumption affects the best-fit beaming parameter, overestimates the effective diameter and underestimates the albedo at large phase angles, by testing NEATM on thermal IR fluxes generated from simulated asteroid surfaces with different thermal inertia. We compare NEATM to radar diameters and find that NEATM overestimates the diameter when the bea…
We describe interferometric observations of the asteroid (41) Daphne in the thermal infrared obtained with the Mid-Infrared Interferometric Instrument (MIDI) of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). We derived the size and the surface thermal properties of (41) Daphne by means of a thermophysical model (TPM), which is used for the interpretation of interferometric data for the first time. From our TPM analysis, we derived a volume equivalent diameter for (41) Daphne of 189 km, using a non-convex 3-D shape model derived from optical lightcurves and adaptive optics images (B. Carry, pr…
The values of the phase integral q were determined for asteroids using (i) a numerical integration of the brightness phase functions over a wide phase-angle range and (ii) the relations between q and the G parameter of the HG-function and q and the G1, G2 parameters of the HG1G2-function. The phase-integral values for asteroids of different albedo range from 0.34 to 0.54 with an average value of 0.44. These values can be used for the determination of the Bond albedo of asteroids. Estimates for the phase-integral values using the G1 and G2 parameters are in very good agreement with the availabl…
In this work, we investigate the size, thermal inertia, surface roughness and geometric albedo of 10 Vesta family asteroids by using the Advanced Thermophysical Model (ATPM), based on the thermal infrared data acquired by mainly NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Here we show that the average thermal inertia and geometric albedo of the investigated Vesta family members are 42 $\rm J m^{-2} s^{-1/2} K^{-1}$ and 0.314, respectively, where the derived effective diameters are less than 10 km. Moreover, the family members have a relatively low roughness fraction on their surfaces. T…
We investigate the potential of the sparse data produced by the Catalina Sky Survey astrometric project (CSS for short) in asteroid shape and rotational state determination by the lightcurve inversion method. We show that although the photometric quality of the CSS data, compared to the dense data, is significantly worse, it is in principle possible that these data are for some asteroids with high lightcurve amplitudes sufficient for a unique shape determination. CSS data are available for $\sim$180 asteroids for which shape models were previously derived from different photometric data sets. …
Context. The so-called Barbarian asteroids share peculiar, but common polarimetric properties, probably related to both their shape and composition. They are named after (234) Barbara, the first on which such properties were identified. As has been suggested, large scale topographic features could play a role in the polarimetric response, if the shapes of Barbarians are particularly irregular and present a variety of scattering/incidence angles. This idea is supported by the shape of (234) Barbara, that appears to be deeply excavated by wide concave areas revealed by photometry and stellar occ…
We evaluated the prospects of quantifying the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter beta and solar quadrupole moment J2 with observations of near-Earth asteroids with large orbital precession rates (9 to 27 arcsec century$^{-1}$). We considered existing optical and radar astrometry, as well as radar astrometry that can realistically be obtained with the Arecibo planetary radar in the next five years. Our sensitivity calculations relied on a traditional covariance analysis and Monte Carlo simulations. We found that independent estimates of beta and J2 can be obtained with precisions of $6\time…

In this paper, a 3D convex shape model of (175706) 1996 FG3, which consists of 2040 triangle facets and 1022 vertices, is derived from the known lightcurves. The best-fit orientation of the asteroid's spin axis is determined to be $λ=237.7^\circ$ and $β=-83.8^{\circ}$ considering the observation uncertainties, and its rotation period is $\sim$ 3.5935 h . Using the derived shape model, we adopt the so-called advanced thermophysical model (ATPM) to fit three published sets of mid-infrared observations of 1996 FG3 \citep{Wolters2011,Walsh2012}, so as to evaluate its surface properties. Assuming t…
Short-arc orbit determination is crucial when an asteroid is first discovered. In these cases usually the observations are so few that the differential correction procedure may not converge. We have developed an initial orbit computation method, based on the systematic ranging, an orbit determination techniques which systematically explores a raster in the topocentric range and range-rate space region inside the admissible region. We obtain a fully rigorous computation of the probability for the asteroid that could impact the Earth within few days from the discovery, without any a priori assum…

We performed a statistical analysis of the astrometric errors for the major asteroid surveys. We analyzed the astrometric residuals as a function of observation epoch, observed brightness and rate of motion, finding that astrometric errors are larger for faint observations and some stations improved their astrometric quality over time. Based on this statistical analysis we develop a new weighting scheme to be used when performing asteroid orbit determination. The proposed weights result in ephemeris predictions that can be conservative by a factor as large as 1.5. However, the new scheme is mo…
Asteroid phase curves are used to derive fundamental physical properties through the determination of the absolute magnitude H. The upcoming visible Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and mid-infrared Near-Earth Object Surveillance Mission (NEOSM) surveys rely on these absolute magnitudes to derive the colours and albedos of millions of asteroids. Furthermore, the shape of the phase curves reflects their surface compositions, allowing for conclusions on their taxonomy. We derive asteroid phase curves from dual-band photometry acquired by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System te…
This paper considers a new method for the binary asteroid orbit determination problem. The method is based on the Bayesian approach with a global optimisation algorithm. The orbital parameters to be determined are modelled through an a posteriori distribution made of a priori and likelihood terms. The first term constrains the parameters space and it allows the introduction of available knowledge about the orbit. The second term is based on given observations and it allows us to use and compare different observational error models. Once the a posteriori model is built, the estimator of the orb…
We present $V$-band photometry of the 20,000 brightest asteroids using data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) between 2012 and 2018. We were able to apply the convex inversion method to more than 5,000 asteroids with more than 60 good measurements in order to derive their sidereal rotation periods, spin axis orientations, and shape models. We derive unique spin state and shape solutions for 760 asteroids, including 163 new determinations. This corresponds to a success rate of about 15%, which is significantly higher than the success rate previously achieved using photo…
In the past decade, hundreds of asteroid shape models have been derived using the lightcurve inversion method. At the same time, a new framework of 3-D shape modeling based on the combined analysis of widely different data sources such as optical lightcurves, disk-resolved images, stellar occultation timings, mid-infrared thermal radiometry, optical interferometry, and radar delay-Doppler data, has been developed. This multi-data approach allows the determination of most of the physical and surface properties of asteroids in a single, coherent inversion, with spectacular results. We review the…
In this article, theory-based analytical methodologies of astrophysics employed in the modern era are suitably operated alongside a test research-grade telescope to image and determine the orbit of a near-earth asteroid from original observations, measurements, and calculations. Subsequently, its intrinsic orbital path has been calculated including the chance it would likely impact Earth in the time ahead. More so specifically, this case-study incorporates the most effective, feasible, and novel Gauss's Method in order to maneuver the orbital plane components of a planetesimal, further elabora…
A multi-colour phase-polarization curve of asteroid (3200)~Phaethon has been obtained during the December 2017 apparition by merging measurements taken at the observing station of Calern (France) and at the Rhozen observatory (Bulgaria). All the observations were obtained in the positive polarization branch, the phase angle ranging from 36$^\circ$ to 116$^\circ$. The measured values of linear polarization are among the highest ever observed for a Solar system body. The covered interval of phase angle was not sufficiently extended to derive a firm determination of the $P_{\rm max}$ parameter, b…
The Yarkovsky effect is a weak non-gravitational force leading to a small variation of the semi-major axis of an asteroid. Using radar measurements and astrometric observations, it is possible to measure a drift in semi-major axis through orbit determination. This paper aims to detect a reliable drift in semi-major axis of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) from ground-based observations and to investigate the impact of precovery observations and the future Gaia catalogue in the detection of a secular drift in semi-major axis. We have developed a precise dynamical model of an asteroid's motion taking…
Construction of the precise shape of an asteroid is critical for spacecraft operations as the gravitational potential is determined by spatial mass distribution. The typical approach to shape determination requires a prolonged mapping phase of the mission over which extensive measurements are collected and transmitted for Earth-based processing. This paper presents a set of approaches to explore an unknown asteroid with onboard calculations, and to land on its surface area selected in an optimal fashion. The main motivation is to avoid the extended period of mapping or preliminary ground obser…
The {\it Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite} (TESS) searches for planets transiting bright and nearby stars using high-cadence, large-scale photometric observations. Full Frame Images provided by the TESS mission include large number of serendipitously observed main-belt asteroids. Due to the cadence of the published Full Frame Images we are sensitive to periods as long as of order tens of days, a region of phase space that is generally not accessible through traditional observing. This work represents a much less biased measurement of the period distribution in this period range. We have d…
Near-Earth asteroid (NEA) 1566 Icarus ($a=1.08$ au, $e=0.83$, $i=22.8^{\circ}$) made a close approach to Earth in June 2015 at 22 lunar distances (LD). Its detection during the 1968 approach (16 LD) was the first in the history of asteroid radar astronomy. A subsequent approach in 1996 (40 LD) did not yield radar images. We describe analyses of our 2015 radar observations of Icarus obtained at the Arecibo Observatory and the DSS-14 antenna at Goldstone. These data show that the asteroid is a moderately flattened spheroid with an equivalent diameter of 1.44 km with 18% uncertainties, resolving …
Eos family was created during a catastrophic impact about 1.3 Gyr ago. Rotation states of individual family members contain information about the history of the whole population. We aim to increase the number of asteroid shape models and rotation states within the Eos collision family, as well as to revise previously published shape models from the literature. Such results can be used to constrain theoretical collisional and evolution models of the family, or to estimate other physical parameters by a thermophysical modeling of the thermal infrared data. We use all available disk-integrated op…
Orbit-determination programs find the orbit solution that best fits a set of observations by minimizing the RMS of the residuals of the fit. For near-Earth asteroids, the uncertainty of the orbit solution may be compatible with trajectories that impact Earth. This paper shows how incorporating the impact condition as an observation in the orbit-determination process results in a robust technique for finding the regions in parameter space leading to impacts. The impact pseudo-observation residuals are the b-plane coordinates at the time of close approach and the uncertainty is set to a fraction…
The available set of spin and shape modelled asteroids is strongly biased against slowly rotating targets and those with low lightcurve amplitudes. As a consequence of these selection effects, the current picture of asteroid spin axis distribution, rotation rates, or radiometric properties, might be affected too. To counteract these selection effects, we are running a photometric campaign of a large sample of main belt asteroids omitted in most previous studies. We determined synodic rotation periods and verified previous determinations. When a dataset for a given target was sufficiently large…

Main belt asteroids (6070) Rheinland and (54827) 2001NQ8 belong to a small population of couples of bodies which reside on very similar heliocentric orbits. Vokrouhlicky & Nesvorny (2008, AJ 136, 280) promoted a term "asteroid pairs", pointing out their common origin within the past tens to hundreds of ky. Previous attempts to reconstruct the initial configuration of Rheinland and 2001NQ8 at the time of their separation have led to the prediction that Rheinland's rotation should be retrograde. Here we report extensive photometric observations of this asteroid and use the lightcurve inversion t…

Asteroid modeling efforts in the last decade resulted in a comprehensive dataset of almost 400 convex shape models and their rotation states. This amount already provided a deep insight into physical properties of main-belt asteroids or large collisional families. We aim to increase the number of asteroid shape models and rotation states. Such results are an important input for various further studies such as analysis of asteroid physical properties in different populations, including smaller collisional families, thermophysical modeling, and scaling shape models by disk-resolved images, or st…
