We present a systematic comparison between guided modes supported by slab waveguides and Bloch Surface Waves (BSWs) propagating at the surface of truncated periodic multilayers. We show that, contrary to common belief, the best surface field enhancement achievable for guided modes in a slab waveguide is comparable to that observed for BSWs. At the same time, we demonstrate that, if one is interested in maximizing the electromagnetic energy density at a generic point of a dielectric planar structure, BSWs are often preferable to modes in which light is confined uniquely by total internal reflection. Since these results are wavelength independent and have been obtained by considering a very wide range of refractive indices of the structure constituent materials, we believe they can prove helpful in the design of future structures for the control and the enhancement of the light-matter interaction.
The density of Bloch electromagnetic states inside a one dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC) is formulated based on its dispersion relations. The formulation applied to any anisotropic medium with known dispersion relations and iso-frequency surfaces. Using a practical 1D PC parameters in the visible range, the density of Bloch states for different modes are calculated.
Analytic representation formulas and power series are developed describing the band structure inside non-magnetic periodic photonic three-dimensional crystals made from high dielectric contrast inclusions. Central to this approach is the identification and utilization of a resonance spectrum for quasiperiodic source-free modes. These modes are used to represent solution operators associated with electromagnetic and acoustic waves inside periodic high contrast media. A convergent power series for the Bloch wave spectrum is recovered from the representation formulas. Explicit conditions on the c…
Resonant modes in a lossy periodic structure sandwiched between two lossless homogeneous media form bands that depend on the Bloch wavevector continuously and have a complex frequency due to radiation and absorption losses. A complex bound state in the continuum (cBIC) is a special state with a zero radiation loss in such a band. Plane waves incident upon the periodic structure induce local fields that are resonantly enhanced. In this paper, we derive a rigorous formula for field enhancement, and analyze its dependence on the frequency, wavevector and amplitude of the incident wave. For resona…
A coupled Bloch-wave approach is employed to analyze active photonic-crystal (PhC) waveguides and cavities. Gain couples the otherwise independent counter-propagating Bloch modes. This coupling is shown to limit the maximum attainable slow-light enhancement of gain itself and to strongly affect the mode selection in PhC lasers.
Photonic crystals are periodic structures which prevent light propagation along one or more directions in certain frequency intervals. Their band spectrum is usually analyzed using Floquet-Bloch decomposition. This spectrum is located on the real axis, and it enters the complex plane when absorption and dispersion is considered in the dielectric permittivity of material constituents. Here, we review fundamental definition and properties of dispersion law and group velocity in photonic crystals and we illustrate them with numerical examples.
We show how the central equality of scattering theory, the definition of the $\mathbb{T}$ operator, can be used to generate hierarchies of mean-field constraints that act as natural complements to the standard electromagnetic design problem of optimizing some objective with respect to structural degrees of freedom. Proof-of-concept application to the problem of maximizing radiative Purcell enhancement for a dipolar current source in the vicinity of a structured medium, an effect central to many sensing and quantum technologies, yields performance bounds that are frequently more than an order o…
Lithium niobate (LN) based devices are widely used in integrated and nonlinear optics. This material is robust and resistive to high temperatures, which makes the LN-based devices table, but challenging to fabricate. In this work we report on the design, manufacturing and characterization of engineered dielectric media with thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) on top for the coupling and propagation of electromagnetic surface waves at the telecommunication wavelengths. The designed one-dimentional photonic crystal (1DPhC) sustains Bloch surface waves at the multilayer/air interface at 1550 nm wave…

Near-field coupling is a fundamental physical effect, which plays an important role in the establishment of classical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). However, in a normal environment the coupling length between the bright and dark artificial atoms is very short and far less than one wavelength, owing to the exponentially decaying property of near fields. In this work, we report the realization of a long range EIT, by using a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) which can convert the near fields into high-k propagating waves to overcome the problem of weak coupling at long di…
Modal coupling between frequency-degenerate resonances of an optical ring resonator is a commonly observed phenomenon that results in adverse mode splitting. Traditionally, this coupling is attributed to Rayleigh scattering of a propagating electromagnetic wave into its associated degenerate counter-propagating mode from small perturbations to the dielectric material of the resonator. We have chosen to reframe the problem of intracavity Rayleigh scattering by considering the optical ring resonator as an infinitely-long, one-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) that possesses a lattice constant e…
On periodic structures sandwiched between two homogeneous media, a bound state in the continuum (BIC) is a guided Bloch mode with a frequency within the radiation continuum. BICs are useful, since they give rise to high quality-factor ($Q$-factor) resonances that enhance local fields for diffraction problems with given incident waves. For any BIC on a periodic structure, there is always a surrounding family of resonant modes with $Q$-factors approaching infinity. We analyze field enhancement around BICs using analytic and numerical methods. Based on a perturbation method, we show that field en…
Electromagnetic multipoles can be continuously mapped to tangent vectors on the momentum sphere, the topology of which guarantees the existence of isolated singularities. For pure (real or imaginary) vectors, those singularities correspond to zeros of tangent fields, which can be classified by integer Poincaré indices. Nevertheless, electromagnetic fields are generally complex vectors, a comprehensive characterization of which requires the introduction of line fields and line singularities categorized by half-integer Hopf indices. Here we explore complex vectorial electromagnetic multipoles fr…
The behavior of electromagnetic waves in chirally twisted structures is a topic of enduring interest, dating back at least to the invention in the 1940s of the microwave travelling wave tube amplifier and culminating in contemporary studies of chiral metamaterials, metasurfaces, and photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). Optical fibers with chiral microstructures, drawn from a spinning preform, have many useful properties, exhibiting for example circular birefringence and circular dichroism. It has recently been shown that chiral fibers with N fold rotationally symmetric (symmetry group CN) transvers…
Enhancing the absorption and emission of electromagnetic waves over a broad range of wavelengths is a topic of fundamental and applied interest in photonics and energy research. In the context of light trapping in solar cells, for example, significant interest in the past decade has focused on overcoming limits in the ray-optics regime with nanophotonic structures. However, many such structures, in particular plasmonic structures, or PT-symmetric systems can posses multiple materials with varying values of intrinsic loss. Here, we rigorously determine the effect of parasitic loss on the achiev…
By applying a coupled-Bloch-mode approach, we have derived a simple expression for the transmission properties of photonic crystal (PhC) line-defect waveguides with a complex refractive index perturbation. We have provided physical insights on the coupling mechanism by analyzing the frequency dependence and relative strength of the coupling coefficients. We have shown the impact of the perturbation on the waveguide dispersion relation and how the gain-induced distributed feedback limits the maximum attainable slow-light enhancement of the gain itself. We have then applied our approach to analy…
Focusing electromagnetic field to enhance the interaction with matter has been promoting researches and applications of nano electronics and photonics. Usually, the evanescent-wave coupling is adopted in various nano structures and materials to confine the electromagnetic field into a subwavelength space. Here, based on the direct coupling with confined electron oscillations in a nanowire, we demonstrate an extreme localization of microwave field down to 10$^{-6}λ$. A hybrid nanowire-bowtie antenna is further designed to focus the free-space microwave to this deep-subwavelength space. Detected…
Eigenvalue problems for electromagnetic resonant states on open dielectric structures are non-Hermitian and may have exceptional points (EPs) at which two or more eigenfrequencies and the corresponding eigenfunctions coalesce. EPs of resonant states for photonic structures give rise to a number of unusual wave phenomena and have potentially important applications. It is relatively easy to find a few EPs for a structure with parameters, but isolated EPs provide no information about their formation and variation in parameter space, and it is always difficult to ensure that all EPs in a domain of…
A chiral near field with a highly contorted electromagnetic field builds a bridge to match the chiral molecules and light wavelengths with large size differences. It significantly enhances the circular dichroism of chiral molecules and has great prospects in chirality sensing, detection, trapping, and other chirality-related applications. Surface plasmons feature outstanding light-trapping and electromagnetic-field-concentrating abilities. Plasmonic chiral nanostructures facilitate light manipulation to generate superchiral near fields. Meanwhile, the nanophotonic structures have attracted sig…
This work presents a mathematical theory for electromagnetic scattering resonances in a subwavelength annular hole embedded in a metallic slab, with the annulus width $h\ll1$. The model is representative among many 3D subwavelength hole structures, which are able to induce resonant scattering of electromagnetic wave and the so-called extraordinary optical transmission. We develop a multiscale framework for the underlying scattering problem based upon a combination of the integral equation in the exterior domain and the waveguide mode expansion inside the tiny hole. The matching of the electrom…
The engineering of synthetic dimensions allows for the construction of fictitious lattice structures by coupling the discrete degrees of freedom of a physical system, such as the quantized modes of an electromagnetic cavity or the internal states of an atom. This method enables the study of static and dynamical Bloch band properties in the absence of a real periodic lattice structure. So far, the vast majority of implementations have focused on linear and conservative processes, with the potentially rich physics and opportunities offered by nonlinearities and dissipation remaining largely unex…
A quantum state of an electron influences its electromagnetic field. If a spatial profile of the electron wave packet is not Gaussian, the particle may acquire additional intrinsic multipole moments, which alter its field, especially at small distances. Here the fields of a vortex electron with orbital angular momentum $\ell$ are obtained in a form of a multipole expansion with an electric quadrupole term kept by using the generalized (non-paraxial) Laguerre-Gaussian beams. The quadrupole contribution arises beyond a paraxial approximation, is linearly enhanced for highly twisted packets with …
Local electromagnetic field enhancement in resonant metamaterials is useful for efficient generation of nonlinear phenomena; however, the field enhancement is suppressed by losses of nonlinear elements in metamaterials. For overcoming this issue, we investigate the nonlinear response of an electromagnetically induced transparency like metasurface loaded with gas as the nonlinear element. To induce nonlinearity in the gas associated with discharges, an electromagnetic wave with a modulated amplitude is incident on the metasurface. The measured waveform and spectrum of the transmitted electromag…
