The analysis of an angular distribution of the emission intensity of a two-level atom (dipole) in a photonic crystal reveals an enhancement of the emission rate in some observation directions. Such an enhancement is the result of the bunching of many Bloch eigenwaves with different wave vectors in the same direction due to the crystal anisotropy. If a spatial distribution of the emission intensity is considered, the interference of these eigenwaves should be taken into account. In this paper, the far-field emission pattern of a two-level atom is discussed in the framework of the asymptotic analysis the classical macroscopic Green function. Numerical example is given for a two-dimensional square lattice of air holes in polymer. The relevance of results for experimental observation is discussed.
The density of Bloch electromagnetic states inside a one dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC) is formulated based on its dispersion relations. The formulation applied to any anisotropic medium with known dispersion relations and iso-frequency surfaces. Using a practical 1D PC parameters in the visible range, the density of Bloch states for different modes are calculated.
We generate experimentally different types of two-dimensional Bloch waves of a square photonic lattice by employing the phase imprinting technique. We probe the local dispersion of the Bloch modes in the photonic lattice by analyzing the linear diffraction of beams associated with the high-symmetry points of the Brillouin zone, and also distinguish the regimes of normal, anomalous, and anisotropic diffraction through observations of nonlinear self-action effects.
We theoretically investigate the non-radiative heat transfer between two photonic crystals separated by a small gap in non-equilibrium thermal situation. We predict that the surface Bloch states coupling supported by these media can make heat exchanges larger than those measured at the same separation distance between two massive homogeneous materials made with the elementary components of photonic crystals. These results could find broad applications in near-field technologies.
Birefringent magnetophotonic crystals are found to exhibit degeneracy breaking for asymmetric contradirectional coupling in planar waveguides. Fundamental to high-order local normal mode coupling leads to partially overlapping gyrotropic bandgaps inside the Brillouin zone and partial suppression of Bloch mode propagation. A large magneto-optically active reorientation in polarization state is found for allowed Bloch modes at bandgap edges.
We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in finite photonic band gap structures. We analyze the phenomenon of conduction and forbidden bands and we show that two regimes are to be distinguished with respect to the existence of a strong field near the interfaces. We precise the domain for which an effective medium theory is sounded.
We theoretically study light propagation in guided Bloch surface waves (BSWs) supported by photonic crystal ridges. We demonstrate that low propagation losses can be achieved just by a proper design of the multilayer to obtain photonic band gaps for both light polarizations. We present a design strategy based on a Fourier analysis that allows one to obtain intrinsic losses as low as 5 dB/km for a structure operating in the visible spectral range. These results clarify the limiting factors to light propagation in guided BSWs and represent a fundamental step towards the development of BSW-based …
We report on the first experimental observation of photonic Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional periodic systems. We study the propagation of an optical beam in a square photonic lattice superimposed on a refractive index ramp, and demonstrate the tunneling of light from the first to the higher-order transmission bands of the lattice bandgap spectrum, associated with the spectral dynamics inside the first Brillouin zone and corresponding oscillations of the primary beam.
An analysis is presented of frequency versus wave-vector dispersion in elliptically birefringent one-dimensional layered periodic structures. The presence of local normal mode polarization state variations from one layer to the next is found to lead to mode coupling and to affect the wave-vector dispersion and the character of the Bloch states of the system.
We perform phase-sensitive near-field scanning optical microscopy on photonic-crystal waveguides. The observed intricate field patterns are analyzed by spatial Fourier transformations, revealing several guided TE- and TM-like modes. Using the reconstruction algorithm proposed by Ha, et al. (Opt. Lett. 34 (2009)), we decompose the measured two-dimensional field pattern in a superposition of propagating Bloch modes. This opens new possibilities to study specific modes in near-field measurements. We apply the method to study the transverse behavior of a guided TE-like mode, where the mode extends…
We propose a family of {\it local} $\cal{PT}$-symmetric photonic lattices with transverse index gradient $ω$, where the emergence of {\it stable} Bloch-Zener oscillations are controlled by the degree of non-Hermiticity $γ$ of the lattice. In the exact $\cal{PT}$-symmetric phase we identify a condition between $ω$ and $γ$ for which a wavepacket self -imaging together with a cascade of splittings and giant recombinations occurs at various propagation distances. The giant wavepacket recombination is further enhanced by introducing local impurities.
The polarization properties of a magnetophotonic crystal at the frequencies located in the vicinity of ferromagnetic resonance are studied. The investigations are curried out taking into consideration the fact that the magnitude of material losses in ferrite layers at this frequency band is significant. The method is based on obtaining a system of ordinary differential equations and further analyzing the stability of solutions of this system. The electromagnetic properties of the structure under study are found out via the analysis of the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix of the structure per…
We have studied the propagation and Zener tunneling of light in the binary parabolic optical waveguide array (BPOWA), which consists of two evanescently coupled dissimilar optical waveguides. Due to Bragg reflections, BPOWA attains two minibands separated by a minigap at the zone boundary. Various coherent superpositions of optical oscillations and Zener tunneling occur for different parameters on the phase diagram. In particular, Bloch-Zener oscillation and a different type of Bloch-dipole-Zener oscillation are obtained by the field-evolution analysis. The results may have potential applicati…
Floquet-Bloch lattices are systems in which wave packets are subjet to periodic modulations both in time and space, showing rich dynamics. While this type of lattices is difficult to implement in solid-state physics, optical systems have provided excellent platforms to probe their physics: among other effects, they have revealed genuine phenomena such as the anomalous Floquet topological insulator and the funnelling of light into localised interface modes. Despite the crucial importance of the band dispersion in the photon dynamics and the topological properties of the lattice, the direct expe…
Previous methods for determining photonic quasicrystal (PQC) spectra have relied on the use of large supercells to compute the eigenfrequencies and/or local density of states (LDOS). In this manuscript, we present a method by which the energy spectrum and the eigenstates of a PQC can be obtained by solving Maxwells equations in higher dimensions for any PQC defined by the standard cut-and-project construction, to which a generalization of Blochs theorem applies. In addition, we demonstrate how one can compute band structures with defect states in the higher-dimensional superspace with no addit…
We present a flexible method that can calculate Bloch modes, complex band structures, and impedances of two-dimensional photonic crystals from scattering data produced by widely available numerical tools. The method generalizes previous work which relied on specialized multipole and FEM techniques underpinning transfer matrix methods. We describe the numerical technique for mode extraction, and apply it to calculate a complex band structure and to design two photonic crystal antireflection coatings. We do this for frequencies at which other methods fail, but which nevertheless are of significa…
We suggest a novel concept in the soliton switching based on the Bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic structures. Taking a binary waveguide array as an example, we demonstrate that spatial solitons that belong to different spectral band gaps can be selectively reflected from or transmitted through an engineered defect, which acts as a low or high-pass filter for Bloch waves.
Light propagation in periodic environments is often associated with a number of interesting and potentially useful processes. If a crystalline optical potential is also linearly ramped, light can undergo periodic Bloch oscillations, a direct outcome of localized Wannier-Stark states and their equidistant eigenvalue spectrum. Even though these effects have been extensively explored in conservative settings, this is by no means the case in non-Hermitian photonic lattices encompassing both amplification and attenuation. Quite recently, Bloch oscillations have been predicted in parity-time-symmetr…
We propose an exactly solvable waveguide lattice incorporating inhomogeneous coupling coefficient. This structure provides a classical analogue to the squeezed number and squeezed coherent intensity distribution in quantum optics where the propagation length plays the role of squeezed amplitude. The intensity pattern is obtained in a closed form for an arbitrary distribution of the initial beam profile. We have also investigated the phase transition to the spatial Bloch-like oscillations by adding a linear gradient to the propagation constant of each waveguides ($ α$). Our analytical results s…
We study photonic band structure of two- and three-dimensional magnetophotonic crystals and the polarization properties of their eigenmodes using a plane wave expansion method. The alteration of the photonic band structure and eigenmodes by magnetization are examined. Two orientations are studied: in-plane magnetization and perpendicular magnetization. The magnetization-induced symmetry breaking effects are shown to be responsible for the formation of exotic magnetic Bloch modes, comprised of two or more coupled symmetric and antisymmetric Bloch modes of the corresponding non-magnetic photonic…
We show that, taking a two-dimensional photonic-crystal slab system as an example, surprisingly high quality factors (Q) over 10^5 are achievable, even in the absence of a rigorous photonic-band-gap. We find that the density of in-plane Bloch modes can be controlled by creating additional photon feedback from a finite-size photonic-crystal boundary that serves as a low-Q resonator. This mechanism enables significant reduction in the coupling strength between the bound state and the extended Bloch modes by more than a factor of 40.
We exploit theoretically the occurrence and tunability of photonic Bloch oscillations (PBOs) in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) containing nonlinear composites. Because of the enhanced third-order nonlinearity (Kerr type nonlinearity) of composites, photons undergo oscillations inside tilted photonic bands, which are achieved by the application of graded external pump electric fields on such PCs, varying along the direction perpendicular to the surface of layers. The tunability of PBOs (including amplitude and period) is readily achieved by changing the field gradient. With an appropri…
Versatile manipulation of nano- and microobjects underlies the optomechanics and a variety of its applications in biology, medicine, and lab-on-a-chip platforms. For flexible tailoring optical forces, as well as for extraordinary optomechanical effects, additional degrees of freedom should be introduced into the system. Here, we demonstrate that photonic crystals provide a flexible platform for nanoparticles optical manipulation due to both Bloch surface waves (BSWs) and the complex character of the reflection coefficient paving a way for complex optomechanical interactions control. We demonst…
Effective magnetic fields have enabled unprecedented manipulation of neutral particles including photons. In most studied cases, the effective gauge fields are defined through the phase of mode coupling between spatially discrete elements, such as optical resonators and waveguides in the case for photons. Here, in the paradigm of Bloch-wave modulated photonic crystals, we show creation of effective magnetic fields for photons in conventional dielectric continua for the first time, via Floquet band engineering. By controlling the phase and wavevector of Bloch waves, we demonstrated anomalous qu…
Based on a perturbative approach, we propose a simple and efficient method to engineer topological edge states in two dimensional magnetic photonic crystals. The topological edge states in the microstructures can be constructed and varied by altering the parameters of the microstructure according to the fieldenergy distributions of the Bloch states at the related Bloch wave vectors. The validity of the proposed method has been demonstrated by exact numerical calculations through three concrete examples. Our method makes the topological edge states 'designable'.
Bloch oscillations, the oscillatory motion of a quantum particle in a periodic potential, are one of the most fascinating effects of coherent quantum transport. Originally studied in the context of electrons in crystals, Bloch oscillations manifest the wave nature of matter and are found in a wide variety of different physical systems. Here we report on the first experimental observation of fractional Bloch oscillations, using a photonic lattice as a model system of a two-particle extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. In our photonic simulator, the dynamics of two correlated particles hopping on …
It is theoretically shown that storage and time-reversal of light pulses can be achieved in a coupled-resonator optical waveguide by dynamic tuning of the cavity resonances without maintaining the translational invariance of the system. The control exploits the Bloch oscillation motion of a light pulse in presence of a refractive index ramp, and it is therefore rather different from the mechanism of adiabatic band compression and reversal proposed by Yanik and Fan in recent works [M.F. Yanik and S. Fan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 083901 (2004); Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 173903 (2004)].
We reveal a triangular-lattice planar photonic crystal supports Bloch modes with radially and azimuthally symmetric electric field distributions at the top band-edge of the first photonic band. Bifurcated from the corresponding Bloch modes, two cylindrical vector resonant modes are achieved by simply enlarging the central air-hole of the planar photonic crystal, which have high quality factors around 3,000 and small mode volume. The far-field radiations of the two resonant modes present high-quality cylindrical vector beam profiles. The resonant modes could be optimized by modifying the six ne…
In this article, localized linear defect modes due to bandgap guidance in two-dimensional photonic lattices with localized or non-localized defects are investigated theoretically. First, when the defect is localized and weak, eigenvalues of defect modes bifurcated from edges of Bloch bands are derived analytically. It is shown that in an attractive (repulsive) defect, defect modes bifurcate out from Bloch-band edges with normal (anomalous) diffraction coefficients. Furthermore, distances between defect-mode eigenvalues and Bloch-band edges are exponentially small functions of the defect streng…
We discuss the interband light tunneling in a two-dimensional periodic photonic structure, as was studied recently in experiments for optically-induced photonic lattices [H. Trompeter et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{96}, 053903 (2006)]. We identify the Zener tunneling regime at the crossing of two Bloch bands, which occurs in a generic case of the Bragg reflection when the Bloch index crosses the edge of the irreducible Brillouin zone. Similarly, the higher-order Zener tunneling involves four Bloch bands when the Bloch index passes through a high-symmetry point on the edge of the Brillouin zo…
By applying a coupled-Bloch-mode approach, we have derived a simple expression for the transmission properties of photonic crystal (PhC) line-defect waveguides with a complex refractive index perturbation. We have provided physical insights on the coupling mechanism by analyzing the frequency dependence and relative strength of the coupling coefficients. We have shown the impact of the perturbation on the waveguide dispersion relation and how the gain-induced distributed feedback limits the maximum attainable slow-light enhancement of the gain itself. We have then applied our approach to analy…
We present an implementation of the Maxwell-Bloch (MB) formalism for the study of x-ray emission dynamics from periodic multilayer materials whether they are artificial or natural. The treatment is based on a direct Finite-Difference-Time-Domain (FDTD) solution of Maxwell equations combined with Bloch equations incorporating a random spontaneous emission noise. Besides periodicity of the material, the treatment distinguishes between two kinds of layers, those being active (or resonant) and those being off-resonance. The numerical model is applied to the problem of $Kα$ emission in multilayer m…
A hallmark of topological band theory in periodic media is that bulk properties are not affected by boundary conditions. Remarkably, in certain non-Hermitian lattices the bulk properties are largely affected by boundaries, leading to such major effects as the non-Hermitian skin effect and violation of the bulk-boundary correspondence. Here we unveil that non-unitary discrete-time quantum walks of photons in systems involving gain and loss show rather generally non-Bloch parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry breaking phase transitions, and suggest a bulk probing method to detect such boundary-d…
We present an absorbing boundary condition for electromagnetic frequency domain simulations of photonic crystals and metamaterials. This boundary condition can simultaneously absorb multiple Bloch-Floquet eigenmodes of a periodic crystal, including both propagating and evanescent modes. The photonic crystal or metamaterial in question can include lossy, active, anisotropic and even bi-anisotropic inclusions. The absorbing boundary condition is dependent on an orthogonality condition for Bloch-Floquet eigenmodes, a generalized version of which is presented here. We test this absorbing boundary …
We present a method to map the absolute electromagnetic field strength inside photonic crystals. We apply the method to map the electric field component Ez of a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab at microwave frequencies. The slab is placed between two mirrors to select Bloch standing waves and a subwavelength spherical scatterer is scanned inside the resulting resonator. The resonant Bloch frequencies shift depending on the electric field at the position of the scatterer. To map the electric field component Ez we measure the frequency shift in the reflection and transmission spectrum of th…
Quantum walks are processes that model dynamics in coherent systems. Their experimental implementations proved key to unveil novel phenomena in Floquet topological insulators. Here we realize a photonic quantum walk in the presence of a synthetic gauge field, which mimics the action of an electric field on a charged particle. By tuning the energy gaps between the two quasi-energy bands, we investigate intriguing system dynamics characterized by the interplay between Bloch oscillations and Landau-Zener transitions. When both gaps at quasi-energy values 0 and $π$ are vanishingly small, the Floqu…
The Lieb Lattice exhibits intriguing properties that are of general interest in both the fundamental physics and practical applications. Here, we investigate the topological Landau-Zener Bloch oscillation in a photonic Floquet Lieb lattice, where the dimerized helical waveguides is constructed to realize the synthetic spin-orbital interaction through the Floquet mechanism, rendering us to study the impacts of topological transition from trivial gaps to non-trivial ones. The compact localized states of flat bands supported by the local symmetry of Lieb lattice will be associated with other band…
The valleys of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer a new degree of freedom for information processing. To take advantage of this valley degree of freedom, on one hand, it is feasible to control valleys by utilizing different external stimuli like optical and electric fields. On the other hand, nanostructures are also used to separate the valleys by near field coupling. However, for both above methods, either required low-temperature environment or low degree of coherence properties limit their further applications. Here, we demonstrate all-dielectric photonic crystal…
Controlling the dispersion and directionality of the emission of nanosources is one of the major goals of nanophotonics research. This control will allow the development of highly efficient nanosources even at the single photon level. One of the ways to achieve this goal is to couple the emission to Bloch modes of periodic structures. Here, we present the first measurements of the directional emission from nanowire photonic crystals by using Fourier microscopy. With this technique we efficiently collect and resolve the directional emission of nanowires within the numerical aperture of a micros…
We derive and validate a set of coupled Bloch wave equations for analyzing the reflection and transmission properties of active semiconductor photonic crystal waveguides. In such devices, slow-light propagation can be used to enhance the material gain per unit length, enabling, for example, the realization of short optical amplifiers compatible with photonic integration. The coupled wave analysis is compared to numerical approaches based on the Fourier modal method and a frequency domain finite element technique. The presence of material gain leads to the build-up of a backscattered field, whi…
An analytical formulation for the band structure and Bloch modes in elliptically birefringent magnetophotonic crystals is presented. The model incorporates both the effects of gyrotropy and linear birefringence generally present in magneto-optic thin film devices. Full analytical expressions are obtained for the dispersion relation and Bloch modes in a layered stack photonic crystal and their properties are analyzed. It is shown that other models recently discussed in the literature are contained as special limiting cases of the formulation presented herein.
We develop a semi-analytical model to describe bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs. We model leaky modes supported by photonic crystal slabs as a transverse Fabry-Perot resonance composed of a few propagative Bloch waves bouncing back and forth vertically inside the slab. This multimode Fabry-Perot model accurately predicts the existence of BICs and their positions in the parameter space. We show that, regardless of the slab thickness, BICs cannot exist below a cut-off frequency, which is related to the existence of the second-order Bloch wave in the photonic crystal…
Periodically driven systems, characterised by their inherent non-equilibrium dynamics, are ubiquitously found in both classical and quantum regimes. In the field of photonics, these Floquet systems have begun to provide insight into how time periodicity can extend the concept of spatially periodic photonic crystals and metamaterials to the time domain. However, despite the necessity arising from the presence of non-reciprocal coupling between states in a photonic Floquet medium, a unified non-Hermitian band structure description remains elusive. Here, we experimentally reveal the unique Bloch-…
We report the existence of transversely stable soliton trains in optics. These stable soliton trains are found in two-dimensional square photonic lattices when they bifurcate from X-symmetry points with saddle-shaped diffraction inside the first Bloch band and their amplitudes are above a certain threshold. We also show that soliton trains with low amplitudes or bifurcated from edges of the first Bloch band (Gamma and M points) still suffer transverse instability. These results are obtained in the continuous lattice model and further corroborated by the discrete model.
We demonstrate that the spatial profiles of both propagating and evanescent Bloch-modes in a periodic structure can be extracted from a single measurement of electric field at the specified optical wavelength. We develop a systematic extraction procedure by extending the concepts of high-resolution spectral methods previously developed for temporal data series to take into account the symmetry properties of Bloch-modes simultaneously at all spatial locations. We apply our method to a photonic crystal waveguide interface and confirm its robustness in the presence of noise.
Photonic crystals are periodic structures which prevent light propagation along one or more directions in certain frequency intervals. Their band spectrum is usually analyzed using Floquet-Bloch decomposition. This spectrum is located on the real axis, and it enters the complex plane when absorption and dispersion is considered in the dielectric permittivity of material constituents. Here, we review fundamental definition and properties of dispersion law and group velocity in photonic crystals and we illustrate them with numerical examples.
Bloch-Zener oscillations (BZO), i.e. the interplay between Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-band lattices under an external dc force, are ubiquitous in different areas of wave physics, including photonics. While in Hermitian systems such oscillations are rather generally aperiodic and only accidentally periodic, in non-Hermitian (NH) lattices BZO can show a transition from aperiodic to periodic as a NH parameter in the system is varied. Remarkably, the phase transition can be either smooth or sharp, contrary to other types of NH phase transitions which are universally sharp. A dis…
We present a systematic numerical approach to compute the eigenmodes and the related eigenfrequencies of a disordered photonic crystal, characterized by small fluctuations of the otherwise periodic dielectric profile. The field eigenmodes are expanded on the basis of Bloch modes of the corresponding periodic structure, and the resulting eigenvalue problem is diagonalized on a truncated basis including a finite number of Bloch bands. The Bloch-mode expansion is very effective for modeling modes of very extended disordered structures in a given frequency range, as only spectrally close bands mus…
We introduce topological phases in Photonic Time-Crystals. Photonic Time-Crystals are materials in which the refractive index varies periodically and abruptly in time. When the refractive index changes abruptly, the light propagating in the material experiences time-refraction and time-reflection, analogous to refraction and reflection in photonic crystals. Interference between time-refracted and time-reflected waves gives rise to Floquet-Bloch states and dispersion bands, which are gapped in the momentum. We show that photonic time-crystals can be in a topologically non-trivial phase, and cal…
