We exploit theoretically the occurrence and tunability of photonic Bloch oscillations (PBOs) in one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) containing nonlinear composites. Because of the enhanced third-order nonlinearity (Kerr type nonlinearity) of composites, photons undergo oscillations inside tilted photonic bands, which are achieved by the application of graded external pump electric fields on such PCs, varying along the direction perpendicular to the surface of layers. The tunability of PBOs (including amplitude and period) is readily achieved by changing the field gradient. With an appropriate graded pump AC or DC electric field, terahertz PBOs can appear and cover a terahertz band in electromagnetic spectrum.
We numerically investigate the light beam propagation in periodic waveguide arrays which are elaborately modulated with certain structures. We find that the light beam may split, coalesce, deflect, and be localized during propagation in these spatially modulated waveguide arrays. All the phenomena originate from Bloch oscillations, and supply possible method for fabricating on-chip beam splitters and beam combiners.
We study the reflection of Bloch wavepackets at the interface of optical lattice possessing a shallow longitudinal out-of-phase refractive index modulation in adjacent waveguides. We show that the relation between the transmitted and reflected energy flows can be efficiently controlled by tuning the frequency and the depth of the modulation. Thus, complete beam reflection may be achieved for a set of resonant modulation frequencies at which light tunneling between adjacent guides of modulated lattice is inhibited.
Effective magnetic fields have enabled unprecedented manipulation of neutral particles including photons. In most studied cases, the effective gauge fields are defined through the phase of mode coupling between spatially discrete elements, such as optical resonators and waveguides in the case for photons. Here, in the paradigm of Bloch-wave modulated photonic crystals, we show creation of effective magnetic fields for photons in conventional dielectric continua for the first time, via Floquet band engineering. By controlling the phase and wavevector of Bloch waves, we demonstrated anomalous qu…
We investigate solitons and nonlinear Bloch waves in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices. By introducing specially designed localized profiles of the spatial modulation of the attractive nonlinearity, we construct an infinite number of exact soliton solutions in terms of the Mathieu and elliptic functions, with the chemical potential belonging to the semi-infinite bandgap of the optical-lattice-induced spectrum. Starting from the exact solutions, we employ the relaxation method to construct generic families of soliton solutions in a numerical form. The stability of the solito…
Metasurfaces consisting of electrically thin and densely packed planar arrays of subwavelength elements enable an unprecedented control of the impinging electromagnetic fields. Spatially modulated metasurfaces can efficiently tailor the spatial distribution of these fields with great flexibility. Similarly, time modulated metasurfaces can be successfully used to manipulate the frequency content and time variations of the impinging field. In this paper, we present time-modulated reflective metasurfaces that cause a frequency shift to the impinging radiation, thus realizing an artificial Doppler…
We report bound states in the radiation continuum (BSCs) in a single infinitely long dielectric rod with periodically stepwise modulated permittivity alternating from $ε_1$ to $ε_2$. For $ε_2=1$ in air the rod is equivalent to a stack of dielectric discs with permittivity $ε_1$. Because of rotational and translational symmetries the BSCs are classified by orbital angular momentum $m$ and the Bloch wave vector $β$ directed along the rod. For $m=0$ and $β=0$ the symmetry protected BSCs have definite polarization and occur in a wide range of the radius of the rod and the dielectric permittivities…
Application of the phase modulated pulsed light for advance spectroscopic measurements is the area of growing interest. The phase modulation of the light causes modulation of the signal. Separation of the spectral components of the modulations allows to distinguish the contributions of various interaction pathways. The lasers with high repetition rate used in such experiments can lead to appearance of the accumulation effects, which become especially pronounced in systems with long-living excited states. Recently it was shown, that such accumulation effects can be used to evaluate parameters o…
Achieving electrical injection of exciton-polaritons, half-light, half-matter quasiparticles arising from the strong coupling between photonic and excitonic resonances, is a crucial milestone to scale up polaritonic devices such as optical computers, quantum simulators and inversionless lasers. Here we present a new approach to achieve strong coupling between electrically injected excitons and photonic bound states in the continuum of a dielectric metasurface monolithically patterned in the channel of a light-emitting transistor. Exciton-polaritons are generated by coupling electrically inject…
Interest in photonic crystal nanocavities is fueled by advances in device performance, particularly in the development of low-threshold laser sources. Effective electrical control of high performance photonic crystal lasers has thus far remained elusive due to the complexities associated with current injection into cavities. A fabrication procedure for electrically pumping photonic crystal membrane devices using a lateral p-i-n junction has been developed and is described in this work. We have demonstrated electrically pumped lasing in our junctions with a threshold of 181 nA at 50K - the lowe…
Optical nonlinearities are known to provide a coherent coupling between the amplitude and phase of the light, which can result in the formation of periodic waveforms. Lasers that emit such waveforms are referred to as optical frequency combs. Here we show that Bloch gain - a nonclassical phenomenon that was first predicted in the 1930s - plays an essential role in comb formation in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). We develop a self-consistent theoretical model that considers all aspects of comb formation: bandstructure, electron transport, and cavity dynamics. It reveals that Bloch gain gives ri…
Electrical tuning of second-order nonlinearity in optical materials is attractive to strengthen and expand the functionalities of nonlinear optical technologies, though its implementation remains elusive. Here, we report the electrically tunable second-order nonlinearity in atomically thin ReS2 flakes benefiting from their distorted 1T crystal structure and interlayer charge transfer. Enabled by the efficient electrostatic control of the few-atomic-layer ReS2, we show that second harmonic generation (SHG) can be induced in odd-number-layered ReS2 flakes which are centrosymmetric and thus witho…
Realization of the anomalous refraction effects predicted by Huygens' metasurfaces (HMS) have required tedious and time-consuming trial-and-error numerical full-wave computations. It is shown herein that these requirements can be alleviated for transverse magnetic (TM) propagation by a periodic dielectric-based HMS consisting of an electrically thick array of cascaded Fabry-Pérot etalons. This "Fabry-Pérot HMS" (FP-HMS) is easily designed to mimic the local scattering coefficients of a standard zero-thickness HMS (ZT-HMS) which, according to homogenization theory, should result in the desired …
We report a study on the ultrafast coherent population oscillations (UCPO) in two level atoms induced by the frequency modulated few-cycle optical pulse train. The phenomenon of UCPO is investigated by numerically solving the optical Bloch equations beyond the rotating wave approximation. We demonstrate that the quantum state of the atoms and the frequency of UCPO may be controlled by controlling the number of pulses in the pulse trains and the pulse repetition time respectively. Moreover, the robustness of the population inversion against the variation of the laser pulse parameters is also in…
We investigate wave transport properties of Parity-Time (PT) symmetric lattices that are periodically modulated along the direction of propagation. We demonstrate that in the regime of unbroken PT-symmetry the system Floquet-Bloch modes may interfere constructively leading to either controlled oscillations or linear power absorption and amplification occurring exactly at the phase transition point. The differential power response is effected by the overlap of the gain and loss system distribution with wave intensity pattern that is formed through Rabi oscillations engaging the coupled Floquet-…
We cast a theoretical model based on Effective Semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch Equations and study the dynamics of a multi-mode mid-Infrared Quantum Cascade Laser in Fabry Perot with the aim to investigate the spontaneous generation of optical frequency combs. This model encompasses the key features of a semiconductor active medium such as asymmetric,frequency-dependent gain and refractive index as well as the phase-amplitude coupling of the field dynamics provided by the linewidth enhancement factor. Our numerical simulations are in excellent agreement with recent experimental results, showing br…
In physics, synthetic dimensions trigger great interest to manipulate light in different ways, while in technology, lithium niobate shows important capability towards on-chip applications. Here, based on the state-of-art technology, we propose and study a theoretical model of dynamically-modulated waveguide arrays with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger configuration in the spatial dimension. The propagation of light through the one-dimensional waveguide arrays mimics time evolution of field in a synthetic two-dimensional lattice including the frequency dimension. By adding the effective gauge potential…
Emerging photonic functionalities are mostly governed by the fundamental principle of Lorentz reciprocity. Lifting the constraints imposed by this principle could circumvent deleterious effects that limit the performance of photonic systems. A variety of approaches have recently been explored to break reciprocity, yet most efforts have been limited to confined photonic systems. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a spatio-temporally modulated metasurface capable of extreme breakdown of Lorentz reciprocity. Through tailoring the momentum and frequency harmonic contents of the scatte…
This work continues the development of the raytracing method of [1] for computing the scattered fields from metasurfaces characterized by locally periodic reflection and transmission coefficients. In this work, instead of describing the metasurface in terms of scattering coefficients that depend on the incidence direction, its scattering behavior is characterized by the surface susceptibility tensors that appear in the generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTCs). As the latter quantities are constitutive parameters, they do not depend on the incident field and thus enable a more compact an…
Photonic crystals and metamaterials are two overarching paradigms for manipulating light. Combining the two approaches leads to hypercrystals: hyperbolic dispersion metamaterials that undergo periodic modulation and mix photonic-crystal-like aspects with hyperbolic dispersion physics. So far, there has been limited experimental realization of hypercrystals due to various technical and design constraints. Here, we create nanoscale hypercrystals with lattice constants ranging from 25 nm to 160 nm and measure their collective Bloch modes and dispersion with scattering nearfield microscopy. We dem…
Synthetic photonic lattice with temporally controlled potentials is a versatile platform for realizing wave dynamics associated with physical areas of optics and quantum physics. Here, discrete optics in one-dimensionally synthetic photonic lattice is investigated systematically, in which the light behavior is highly similar to those in evanescently coupled one-dimensional discrete waveguides. Such a synthetic dimension is constructed with position-dependent periodic effective gauge fields based on Aharonov-Bohm effect arising from the phase accumulations of the fiber loops. By tuning the phas…
