In the paper, a regenerative process $\{X_n:n\in\mathbb{N}\}$ with finite mean cycle length is considered. For~$M_n^{(q)}$ denoting the $q$-th largest value in $\{X_k : 1\leqslant k \leqslant n\}$, we prove that \begin{equation*} \sup_{x\in\mathbb{R}} \left|P\left(M^{(q)}_n\leqslant x\right) - G(x)^n \sum_{k=0}^{q-1}\frac{\left(-\log G(x)^n\right)^k}{k!}γ_{q,k}(x)\right| \to 0,\quad \text{as} \quad n\to\infty, \end{equation*} for $G$ and $γ_{q,k}$ expressed in terms of maxima over the cycle. The result is illustrated with examples.
We identify general conditions under which regenerative processes with dependent cycles and cycle lengths are asymptotically independent. The result is applied to various models. In particular, independent Lévy processes with dependent secondary jumps at the origin (e.g., workloads of parallel M/G/1 queues with server vacations), the asymptotic performance of real-time status systems with multiple correlated sources measured by the stationary probability of an updated system and asymptotic results for clearing processes with dependent arrivals of inputs and clearings.
For $\widetilde{\cal R} = 1 - \exp(- {\cal R})$ a random closed set obtained by exponential transformation of the closed range ${\cal R}$ of a subordinator, a regenerative composition of generic positive integer $n$ is defined by recording the sizes of clusters of $n$ uniform random points as they are separated by the points of $\widetilde{\cal R}$. We focus on the number of parts $K_n$ of the composition when $\widetilde{\cal R}$ is derived from a gamma subordinator. We prove logarithmic asymptotics of the moments and central limit theorems for $K_n$ and other functionals of the composition s…
Multiclass open queueing networks find wide applications in communication, computer and fabrication networks. Often one is interested in steady-state performance measures associated with these networks. Conceptually, under mild conditions, a regenerative structure exists in multiclass networks, making them amenable to regenerative simulation for estimating the steady-state performance measures. However, typically, identification of a regenerative structure in these networks is difficult. A well known exception is when all the interarrival times are exponentially distributed, where the instants…
This paper demonstrates a new regeneration processes technology making use of positive stable distributions. We study the asymptotic behavior of branching processes with a randomly controlled migration component. Using the new method, we confirm some known results and establish new limit theorems that hold in a more general setting.
We analyze almost sure asymptotic behavior of extreme values of a regenerative process. We show that under certain conditions a properly centered and normalized running maximum of a regenerative process satisfies a law of the iterated logarithm for the $\limsup$ and a law of the triple logarithm for the $\liminf$. This complements a previously known result of Glasserman and Kou [Ann. Appl. Probab. 5(2) (1995), 424--445]. We apply our results to several queuing systems and a birth and death process.
For $S$ a subordinator and $Π_n$ an independent Poisson process of intensity $ne^{-x}, x>0,$ we are interested in the number $K_n$ of gaps in the range of $S$ that are hit by at least one point of $Π_n$. Extending previous studies in \cite{Bernoulli, GPYI, GPYII} we focus on the case when the tail of the L{é}vy measure of $S$ is slowly varying. We view $K_n$ as the terminal value of a random process ${\cal K}_n$, and provide an asymptotic analysis of the fluctuations of ${\cal K}_n$, as $n\to\infty$, for a wide spectrum of situations.
We prove regenerative properties for the linear Hawkes process under minimal assumptions on the transfer function, which may have unbounded support. These results are applicable to sliding window statistical estimators. We exploit independence in the Poisson cluster point process decomposition, and the regeneration times are not stopping times for the Hawkes process. The regeneration time is interpreted as the renewal time at zero of a M/G/infinity queue, which yields a formula for its Laplace transform. When the transfer function admits some exponential moments, we stochastically dominate the…
Theory of Kingman's partition structures has two culminating points: the general paintbox representation, relating finite partitions to hypothetical infinite populations via a natural sampling procedure, known as Kingman's paintbox; a central example of the theory - the Ewens-Pitman two-parameter family of partitions. In these notes we further develop the theory by passing to structures enriched by the order on the collection of categories; extending the class of tractable models by exploring the idea of regeneration; analysing regenerative properties of the Ewens-Pitman partitions; studying a…
This paper studies the joint tail asymptotics of extrema of the multi-dimensional Gaussian process over random intervals defined as $$ P(u):=\mathbb{P}\left\{\cap_{i=1}^n \left(\sup_{t\in[0,\mathcal{T}_i]} ( X_{i}(t) +c_i t )>a_i u \right)\right\}, \ \ \ u\to\infty, $$ where $X_i(t), t\ge0$, $i=1,2,\cdots,n,$ are independent centered Gaussian processes with stationary increments, $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{T}}=(\mathcal{T}_1, \cdots, \mathcal{T}_n)$ is a regularly varying random vector with positive components, which is independent of the Gaussian processes, and $c_i\in \mathbb{R}$, $a_i>0$, $i=1,2…
Let $\mathbb{X}=(\mathbb{X}_t)_{t\geq 0}$ be the subdiffusive process defined, for any $t\geq 0$, by $ \mathbb{X}_t = X_{\ell_t}$ where $X=(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ is a Lévy process and $\ell_t=\inf \{s>0;\: \mathcal{K}_s>t \}$ with $\mathcal{K}=(\mathcal{K}_t)_{t\geq 0}$ a subordinator independent of $X$. We start by developing a composite Wiener-Hopf factorization to characterize the law of the pair $(\mathbb{T}_a^{(\mathcal{b})}, (\mathbb{X} - \mathcal{b})_{\mathbb{T}_a^{(\mathcal{b})}})$ where \begin{equation*} \mathbb{T}_a^{(\mathcal{b})} = \inf \{t>0;\: \mathbb{X}_t > a+ \mathcal{b}_t \} \end{eq…
Consider a system of $N$ parallel single-server queues with unit-exponential service time distribution and a single dispatcher where tasks arrive as a Poisson process of rate $λ(N)$. When a task arrives, the dispatcher assigns it to one of the servers according to the Join-the-Shortest Queue (JSQ) policy. Eschenfeldt and Gamarnik (2015) established that in the Halfin-Whitt regime where $(N-λ(N))/\sqrt{N}\toβ>0$ as $N\to\infty$, appropriately scaled occupancy measure of the system under the JSQ policy converges weakly on any finite time interval to a certain diffusion process as $N\to\infty$. R…
In this paper, we formulate and prove new properties of conditional quantiles given one of the particular sigma-fields. Next, we use them to investigate almost sure asymptotic behavior of central order statistics which arise from strictly stationary processes. Specifically we provide a new version of a strong ergodic theorem for central order statistics.
It is shown how the central limit theorem for U-statistics of spatial Poisson point processes can help to derive the central limit theorem for U-statistics of a Gibbs facet process from stochastic geometry. A full-dimensional submodel enables a simpler approach to the investigation. Finally the general situation is studied and the asymptotics with increasing intensity is described.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic relation between the first crossing point and the last exit time for Gaussian order statistics which are generated by stationary weakly and strongly dependent Gaussian sequences. It is shown that the first crossing point and the last exit time are asymptotically independent and dependent for weakly and strongly dependent respectively. The asymptotic relation between the first exit time and the last exit time for stationary weakly and strongly dependent Gaussian Gaussian sequences are also obtained.
We consider high frequency observations from a fractional Brownian motion. Inspired by the work of Jean Jacod in a diffusion setting, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of various classical statistics related to the local times of the process. We show that as in the diffusion case, these statistics indeed converge to some local times up to a constant factor. As a corollary, we provide limit theorems for the quadratic variation of the absolute value of a fractional Brownian motion.
We consider distributional limit of the Pearson chi-square statistic when the number of classes m increases with the sample size n in such way that $n/\sqrt{m} \to λ$. Under mild moment conditions, the limit is Gaussian for $λ = \infty$, Poisson for finite $λ > 0$, and degenerate for $λ = 0$.
We study linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with Brownian motion entries. We prove that, the centred, normalized linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices obey a central limit theorem (CLT) type result. We also discuss the convergence of linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with independent entries for odd power monomials. Our method is based on trace formula, moment method and some results of process convergence.
We consider a generalized version in continuous time of the parking problem of Knuth. Files arrive following a Poisson point process and are stored on a hardware identified with the real line. We specify the distribution of the space of unoccupied locations at a fixed time and give its asymptotics when the hardware is becoming full.
This paper establishes expectation and variance asymptotics for statistics of the Poisson--Voronoi approximation of general sets, as the underlying intensity of the Poisson point process tends to infinity. Statistics of interest include volume, surface area, Hausdorff measure, and the number of faces of lower-dimensional skeletons. We also consider the complexity of the so-called Voronoi zone and the iterated Voronoi approximation. Our results are consequences of general limit theorems proved with an abstract Steiner-type formula applicable in the setting of sums of stabilizing functionals.
In this paper, we analyze a multivariate counterpart of the generalized weighted Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic, which is the supremum of weighted locally stationary chi-square process over non-compact interval. The boundedness and the exact tail asymptotic behavior of the statistics are derived. We illustrate our findings by two examples where the statistic is defined by Brownian bridge and fractional Brownian motion respectively.
We consider the stochastic behavior of a class of local $U$-statistics of Poisson processes$-$which include subgraph and simplex counts as special cases, and amounts to quantifying clustering behavior$-$for point clouds lying in diverging halfspaces. We provide limit theorems for distributions with light and heavy tails. In particular, we prove finite-dimensional central limit theorems. In the light tail case we investigate tails that decay at least as slow as exponential and at least as fast as Gaussian. These results also furnish as a corollary that $U$-statistics for halfspaces diverging at…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic relation between the maximum of acontinuous order statistics process formed by stationary Gaussian processesand the maximum of this process sampled at discrete time points. It is shown that, these two maxima are asymptotically independent when the Gaussian processes are weakly dependent and the discrete points are sufficient sparse, while for other case, these two maxima are asymptotically dependent.
We study a stationary Gibbs particle process with deterministically bounded particles on Euclidean space defined in terms of an activity parameter and non-negative interaction potentials of finite range. Using disagreement percolation we prove exponential decay of the correlation functions, provided a dominating Boolean model is subcritical. We also prove this property for the weighted moments of a U-statistic of the process. Under the assumption of a suitable lower bound on the variance, this implies a central limit theorem for such U-statistics of the Gibbs particle process. A byproduct of o…
We study the renormalized real sample covariance matrix $H=X^TX/\sqrt{MN}-\sqrt{M/N}$ with $N/M\rightarrow0$ as $N, M\rightarrow \infty$ in this paper. And we always assume $M=M(N)$. Here $X=[X_{jk}]_{M\times N}$ is an $M\times N$ real random matrix with i.i.d entries, and we assume $\mathbb{E}|X_{11}|^{5+δ}<\infty$ with some small positive $δ$. The Stieltjes transform $m_N(z)=N^{-1}Tr(H-z)^{-1}$ and the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H$ are considered. We mainly focus on the asymptotic expansion of $\mathbb{E}\{m_N(z)\}$ in this paper. Then for some fine test function, a central limit theor…
This paper discusses the asymptotic behaviour of the number of descents in a random signed permutation and its inverse, which was posed as an open problem by Chatterjee and Diaconis in a recent publication. For that purpose, we generalize their result for the asymptotic normality of the number of descents in a random permutation and its inverse to other finite reflection groups. This is achieved by applying their proof scheme on signed permutations, so elements of Coxeter groups of type $ B_n $, which is also known as the hyperoctahedral group. Furthermore, a similar central limit theorem for …
In this paper, we derive higher-order expansions of $L$-statistics of independent risks $X_1, \ldots, X_n$ under conditions on the underlying distribution function $F$. The new results are applied to derive the asymptotic expansions of ratios of two kinds of risk measures, stop-loss premium and excess return on capital, respectively.
In this note, we prove a central limit theorem for smooth linear statistics of zeros of random polynomials which are linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials with iid standard complex Gaussian coefficients. Along the way, we obtain Bergman kernel asymptotics for weighted $L^2$-space of polynomials endowed with varying measures of the form $e^{-2nφ_n(z)}dz$ under suitable assumptions on the weight functions $φ_n$.
In this paper we use a probabilistic approach to derive the expressions for the characteristic functions of basic statistics defined on permutation tableaux. Since our expressions are exact, we can identify the distributions of basic statistics (like the number of unrestricted rows, the number of rows, and the number of 1s in the first row) exactly. In all three cases the distributions are known to be asymptotically normal after a suitable normalization. We also establish the asymptotic normality of the number of superfluous 1s. The latter result relies on a bijection between permutation table…
We study (asymmetric) $U$-statistics based on a stationary sequence of $m$-dependent variables; moreover, we consider constrained $U$-statistics, where the defining multiple sum only includes terms satisfying some restrictions on the gaps between indices. Results include a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem. Special attention is paid to degenerate cases where, after the standard normalization, the asymptotic variance vanishes; in these cases non-normal limits occur after a different normalization. The results are motivated by applications to pattern matching in random strings and…
A wide literature is available on the asymptotic behavior of the Durbin-Watson statistic for autoregressive models. However, it is impossible to find results on the Durbin-Watson statistic for autoregressive models with adaptive control. Our purpose is to fill the gap by establishing the asymptotic behavior of the Durbin Watson statistic for ARX models in adaptive tracking. On the one hand, we show the almost sure convergence as well as the asymptotic normality of the least squares estimators of the unknown parameters of the ARX models. On the other hand, we establish the almost sure convergen…
The purpose of this article is to present a general method to find limiting laws for some renormalized statistics on random permutations. The model considered here is Ewens sampling model, which generalizes uniform random permutations. We describe the asymptotic behavior of a large family of statistics, including the number of occurrences of any given dashed pattern. Our approach is based on the method of moments and relies on the following intuition: two events involving the images of different integers are almost independent.
We study statistical properties of the random variables $X_σ(π)$, the number of occurrences of the pattern $σ$ in the permutation $π$. We present two contrasting approaches to this problem: traditional probability theory and the ``less traditional'' computational approach. Through the perspective of the first one, we prove that for any pair of patterns $σ$ and $τ$, the random variables $X_σ$ and $X_τ$ are jointly asymptotically normal (when the permutation is chosen from $S_{n}$). From the other perspective, we develop algorithms that can show asymptotic normality and joint asymptotic normalit…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of several variants of the scan statistic applied to empirical distributions, which can be applied to detect the presence of an anomalous interval with any length. Of particular interest is Studentized scan statistic that is preferable in practice. The main ingredients in the proof are Kolmogorov's theorem, a Poisson approximation, and recent technical results by Kabluchko et al (2014).
The paper is devoted to three-parametric self-similar Gaussian Volterra processes that generalize fractional Brownian motion. We study the asymptotic growth of such processes and the properties of long- and short-range dependence. Then we consider the problem of the drift parameter estimation for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by Gaussian Volterra process under consideration. We construct a strongly consistent estimator and investigate its asymptotic properties. Namely, we prove that it has the Cauchy asymptotic distribution.
Pearson's is the most common correlation statistic, used mainly in parametric settings. Most common among nonparametric correlation statistics are Spearman's and Kendall's. We show that for bivariate normal i.i.d. samples the pairwise asymptotic relative efficiency between these three statistics depends monotonically on the population correlation coefficient. This monotonicity is a corollary to a stronger result. The proofs rely on the use of l'Hospital-type rules for monotonicity patterns.
A direct saddle-point analysis (without relying on any modular forms, identities or functional equations) is developed to establish the asymptotics of Fishburn matrices and a large number of other variants with a similar sum of-finite-product form for their (formal) general functions. In addition to solving some conjectures, the application of our saddle-point approach to the distributional aspects of statistics on Fishburn matrices is also examined with many new limit theorems characterized, representing the first of their kind for such structures.
In this monograph, we prove an asymptotic approximation for integrals of probability densities over sets in finite dimensional euclidean space, which are far away from the origin (asymptotic sets). We use this approximation to investigate tails of quadratic forms of random vectors, supremum of random linear forms among others. Applications to the study of finite size random matrices, finite sample statistics of autoregressive processes, and supremum of some stochastic processes.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a sharp analysis on the asymptotic behavior of the Durbin-Watson statistic. We focus our attention on the first-order autoregressive process where the driven noise is also given by a first-order autoregressive process. We establish the almost sure convergence and the asymptotic normality for both the least squares estimator of the unknown parameter of the autoregressive process as well as for the serial correlation estimator associated to the driven noise. In addition, the almost sure rates of convergence of our estimates are also provided. It allows us …
The first of $N$ identical independently distributed (i.i.d.) Brownian trajectories that arrives to a small target, sets the time scale of activation, which in general is much faster than the arrival to the target of only a single trajectory. Analytical asymptotic expressions for the minimal time is notoriously difficult to compute in general geometries. We derive here asymptotic laws for the probability density function of the first and second arrival times of a large number of i.i.d. Brownian trajectories to a small target in 1,2, and 3 dimensions and study their range of validity by stochas…
In the first part of the paper we study stochastic integrals of a nonrandom function with respect to a nonorthogonal Hilbert noise defined on a semiring of subsets of an arbitrary nonempty set. In the second part we apply this construction to study limit behavior of canonical (i.e., degenerate) Von Mises statistics based on weakly dependent stationary observations.
