For $\widetilde{\cal R} = 1 - \exp(- {\cal R})$ a random closed set obtained by exponential transformation of the closed range ${\cal R}$ of a subordinator, a regenerative composition of generic positive integer $n$ is defined by recording the sizes of clusters of $n$ uniform random points as they are separated by the points of $\widetilde{\cal R}$. We focus on the number of parts $K_n$ of the composition when $\widetilde{\cal R}$ is derived from a gamma subordinator. We prove logarithmic asymptotics of the moments and central limit theorems for $K_n$ and other functionals of the composition such as the number of singletons, doubletons, etc. This study complements our previous work on asymptotics of these functionals when the tail of the Lévy measure is regularly varying at $0+$.
A regenerative composition structure is a sequence of ordered partitions derived from the range of a subordinator by a natural sampling procedure. In this paper, we extend previous studies Barbour and Gnedin (2006), Gnedin, Iksanov and Marynych (2010) and Gnedin, Pitman and Yor (2006) on the asymptotics of the number of blocks $K_n$ in the composition of integer $n$, in the case when the L{é}vy measure of the subordinator has a property of slow variation at 0. Using tools from the renewal theory the limit laws for $K_n$ are obtained in terms of integrals involving the Brownian motion or stable…
We consider Kingman's partition structures which are regenerative with respect to a general operation of random deletion of some part. Prototypes of this class are the Ewens partition structures which Kingman characterised by regeneration after deletion of a part chosen by size-biased sampling. We associate each regenerative partition structure with a corresponding regenerative composition structure, which (as we showed in a previous paper) can be associated in turn with a regenerative random subset of the positive halfline, that is the closed range of a subordinator. A general regenerative pa…
For $S$ a subordinator and $Π_n$ an independent Poisson process of intensity $ne^{-x}, x>0,$ we are interested in the number $K_n$ of gaps in the range of $S$ that are hit by at least one point of $Π_n$. Extending previous studies in \cite{Bernoulli, GPYI, GPYII} we focus on the case when the tail of the L{é}vy measure of $S$ is slowly varying. We view $K_n$ as the terminal value of a random process ${\cal K}_n$, and provide an asymptotic analysis of the fluctuations of ${\cal K}_n$, as $n\to\infty$, for a wide spectrum of situations.
We analyze almost sure asymptotic behavior of extreme values of a regenerative process. We show that under certain conditions a properly centered and normalized running maximum of a regenerative process satisfies a law of the iterated logarithm for the $\limsup$ and a law of the triple logarithm for the $\liminf$. This complements a previously known result of Glasserman and Kou [Ann. Appl. Probab. 5(2) (1995), 424--445]. We apply our results to several queuing systems and a birth and death process.
A random composition of $n$ appears when the points of a random closed set $\widetilde{\mathcal{R}}\subset[0,1]$ are used to separate into blocks $n$ points sampled from the uniform distribution. We study the number of parts $K_n$ of this composition and other related functionals under the assumption that $\widetilde{\mathcal{R}}=ϕ(S_{\bullet})$, where $(S_t,t\geq0)$ is a subordinator and $ϕ:[0,\infty]\to[0,1]$ is a diffeomorphism. We derive the asymptotics of $K_n$ when the Lévy measure of the subordinator is regularly varying at 0 with positive index. Specializing to the case of exponential …
A new class of random composition structures (the ordered analog of Kingman's partition structures) is defined by a regenerative description of component sizes. Each regenerative composition structure is represented by a process of random sampling of points from an exponential distribution on the positive halfline, and separating the points into clusters by an independent regenerative random set. Examples are composition structures derived from residual allocation models, including one associated with the Ewens sampling formula, and composition structures derived from the zero set of a Brownia…
The concept of a Lévy subordinator is generalized to a family of non-decreasing stochastic processes, which are parameterized in terms of two Bernstein functions. Whereas the independent increments property is only maintained in the Lévy subordinator special case, the considered family is always strongly infinitely divisible with respect to time, meaning that a path can be represented in distribution as a finite sum with arbitrarily many summands of independent and identically distributed paths of another process. Besides distributional properties of the process, we present two applications to…
A regenerative random composition of integer $n$ is constructed by allocating $n$ standard exponential points over a countable number of intervals, comprising the complement of the closed range of a subordinator $S$. Assuming that the Lévy measure of $S$ is infinite and regularly varying at zero of index $-α$, $α\in(0,\,1)$, we find an explicit threshold $r=r(n)$, such that the number $K_{n,\,r(n)}$ of blocks of size $r(n)$ converges in distribution without any normalization to a mixed Poisson distribution. The sequence $(r(n))$ turns out to be regularly varying with index $α/(α+1)$ and the mi…
We study absolute-continuity properties of a class of stochastic processes, including the gamma and the Dirichlet processes. We prove that the laws of a general class of non-linear transformations of such processes are locally equivalent to the law of the original process and we compute explicitly the associated Radon-Nikodym densities. This work unifies and generalizes to random non-linear transformations several previous results on quasi-invariance of gamma and Dirichlet processes.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the time-changed stochastic process $\vphantom{X}^f\!X(t)=B(\vphantom{S}^f\!S (t))$, where $B$ is a standard one-dimensional Brownian motion and $\vphantom{S}^f\!S$ is the (generalized) inverse of a subordinator, i.e. the first-passage time process corresponding to an increasing Lévy process with Laplace exponent $f$. This type of processes plays an important role in statistical physics in the modeling of anomalous subdiffusive dynamics. The main result of the paper is the proof of the mixing property for the sequence of stationary increments of a subdiffus…
Let $X=\{X(t), t\geq 0\}$ be a Brownian motion or a spectrally negative stable process of index $1<\a<2$. Let $E=\{E(t),t\geq 0\}$ be the hitting time of a stable subordinator of index $0<β<1$ independent of $X$. We use a connection between $X(E(t))$ and the stable subordinator of index $β/\a$ to derive information on the path behavior of $X(E_t)$. This is an extension of the connection of iterated Brownian motion and (1/4)-stable subordinator due to Bertoin \cite{bertoin}. Using this connection, we obtain various laws of the iterated logarithm for $X(E(t))$. In particular, we establish law of…
Some, but not all processes of the form $M_t=\exp(-ξ_t)$ for a pure-jump subordinator $ξ$ with Laplace exponent $Φ$ arise as residual mass processes of particle 1 (tagged particle) in Bertoin's partition-valued exchangeable fragmentation processes. We introduce the notion of a Markovian embedding of $M=(M_t,t\ge 0)$ in a fragmentation process, and we show that for each $Φ$, there is a unique (in distribution) binary fragmentation process in which $M$ has a Markovian embedding. The identification of the Laplace exponent $Φ^*$ of its tagged particle process $M^*$ gives rise to a symmetrisation o…
Pitman(2003)(and subsequently Gnedin and Pitman (2006) showed that a large class of random partitions of the integers derived from a stable subordinator of index $α\in(0,1)$ have infinite Gibbs (product) structure as a characterizing feature. The most notable case are random partitions derived from the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution, $\mathrm{PD}(α,θ)$, which are induced by mixing over variables with generalized Mittag-Leffler distributions, denoted by $\mathrm{ML}(α,θ).$ Our aim in this work is to provide indications on the utility of the wider class of Gibbs partitions as it re…
Consider a regenerative storage process with a nondecreasing Lévy input (subordinator) such that every cycle may be split into two periods. In the first (off) the output is shut off and the workload accumulates. This continues until some stopping time. In the second (on), the process evolves like a subordinator minus a positive drift (output rate) until it hits the origin. In addition, we assume that the output rate of every on period is a random variable which is determined at the beginning of this period. For example, at each period, the output rate may depend on the workload level at the be…
This paper develops some general calculus for GGC and Dirichlet process means functionals. It then proceeds via an investigation of positive Linnik random variables, and more generally random variables derived from compositions of a stable subordinator with GGC subordinators, to establish various distributional equivalences between these models and phenomena connected to local times and occupation times of what are defined as randomly skewed Bessel processes and bridges. This yields a host of interesting identities and explicit density formula for these models. Randomly skewed Bessel processes…
We study the number of collisions $X_n$ of an exchangeable coalescent with multiple collisions ($Λ$-coalescent) which starts with $n$ particles and is driven by rates determined by a finite characteristic measure $ν({\rm d}x)=x^{-2}Λ({\rm d}x)$. Via a coupling technique we derive limiting laws of $X_n$, using previous results on regenerative compositions derived from stick-breaking partitions of the unit interval. The possible limiting laws of $X_n$ include normal, stable with index $1\leα<2$ and Mittag-Leffler distributions. The results apply, in particular, to the case when $ν$ is a beta$(a-…
We discuss some applications of the Mittag-Leffler function and related probability distributions in the theory of renewal processes and continuous time random walks. In particular we show the asymptotic (long time) equivalence of a generic power law waiting time to the Mittag-Leffler waiting time distribution via rescaling and respeeding the clock of time. By a second respeeding (by rescaling the spatial variable) we obtain the diffusion limit of the continuous time random walk under power law regimes in time and in space. Finally, we exhibit the time-fractional drift process as a diffusion l…
