Using a nonequilibrium implementation of the Lanczos-based exact diagonalisation technique we study the possibility of the light-induced superconducting phase coherence in a solid state system after an ultrafast optical excitation. In particular, we investigate the buildup of superconducting correlations by calculating an exact time-dependent wave function reflecting the properties of the system in non-equilibrium and the corresponding transient response functions. Within our picture we identify a possible transient Meissner effect after dynamical quenching of the non-superconducting wavefunction and extract a characteristic superfluid density that we compare to experimental data. Finally, we find that the stability of the induced superconducting state depends crucially on the nature of the excitation quench: namely, a pure interaction quench induces a long-lived superconducting state, whereas a phase quench leads to a short-lived transient superconductor.
Scanning tunneling spectroscopies are performed below 100~mK on nano-crystalline boron-doped diamond films characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy and transport measurements. We demonstrate a strong correlation between the local superconductivity strength and the granular structure of the films. The study of the spectral shape, amplitude and temperature dependence of the superconductivity gap enables us to differentiate intrinsically superconducting grains that follow the BCS model, from grains showing a different behavior involving the superconducting proximity effect.
We have studied the structural and superconductivity properties of the compound LaFeAsO0.9F0.1 under pressures up to 32GPa using synchrotron radiation and diamond anvil cells. We obtain an ambient pressure bulk modulus K_0 = 78(2)GPa, compressibility comparable to some cuprates. At high pressures, the sample is in the overdoped region, with a linear decrease with pressure variation of the superconducting transition temperature.
In this letter, we describe quantitative magnetic imaging of superconducting vortices in RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ in order to investigate the unique interplay between the magnetic and superconducting sublattices. Our scanning Hall microscopy data reveal a pronounced suppression of the superfluid density near the magnetic ordering temperature in good qualitative agreement with a recently-developed model describing the suppression of superconductivity by correlated magnetic fluctuations. These results indicate a pronounced exchange interaction between the superconducting and magnetic subsystems in RbEuF…
It is shown that the qualitative model of the high-temperature superconductivity suggested earlier for cuprates and doped picene and based on the idea that the valence electron state depends on the character of the chemical bonds they form and on the Coulomb interaction between the electrons is not only confirmed by the experimental data on iron pnictides but is also improved. From the chemical point of view, the high-temperature superconductivity is associated with additional $π$ bonding along chains of covalently bonded ions via a delocalized $π$ orbital, just like in cuprates. From the phys…
High temperature superconductivity in doped Mott insulators such as the cuprates contradicts the conventional wisdom that electron repulsion is detrimental to superconductivity. Because doped fullerene conductors are also strongly correlated, the recent discovery of high-critical-temperature, presumably s-wave, superconductivity in C$_{60}$ field effect devices is even more puzzling. We examine a dynamical-mean-field solution of a model for electron doped fullerenes which shows how strong correlations can indeed enhance superconductivity close to the Mott transition. We argue that the mechanis…
We report on the recovery of the short-range static magnetic order and on the concomitant degradation of the superconducting state in optimally F-doped SmFe_(1-x)Ru_(x)AsO_0.85F_0.15 for 0.1< x<0.6. The two reduced order parameters coexist within nanometer-size domains in the FeAs layers and finally disappear around a common critical threshold x_c=0.6. Superconductivity and magnetism are shown to be closely related to two distinct well-defined local electronic environments of the FeAs layers. The two transition temperatures, controlled by the isoelectronic and diamagnetic Ru substitution, scal…
The intimate connection between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity is at the core of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we put forward the projected BCS theory for the unification of antiferromagnetism at half filling and strongly correlated superconductivity at moderate doping. Specifically, it is shown that the projected BCS theory provides excellent trial states for the exact ground states of the $t$-$J$ model in the square lattice, generating the unified phase diagram as a continuous function of hole concentration. Precisely capturing antiferromagnetism at half filling, which …
Electrical resistivity, specific heat and NMR measurements classify non-centrosymmetric $\rm Mo_3Al_2C$ ($β$-Mn type, space group $P4_132$) as a strong-coupled superconductor with $T_c = 9$~K deviating notably from BCS-like behaviour. The absence of a Hebbel-Slichter peak, a power law behaviour of the spin-lattice relaxation rate (from $^{27}$Al NMR), a $T^3$ temperature dependence of the specific heat and a pressure enhanced $T_c$ suggest unconventional superconductivity with a nodal structure of the superconducting gap. Relativistic DFT calculations reveal a splitting of degenerate electroni…
Large Hubbard U limit of the Kane-Mele model on a zigzag ribbon of honeycomb lattice near half-filling is studied via a renormalized mean-field theory. The ground state exhibits time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking d + i d'-wave superconductivity. At large spin-orbit coupling, the Z2 phase with non-trivial spin Chern number in the pure Kane-Mele model is persistent into the TRS broken state (called spin-Chern phase), and has two pairs of counter-propagating helical Majorana modes at the edges. As the spin-orbit coupling is reduced, the system undergoes a topological quantum phase transition f…
Specific heat studies of CeRhIn5 as functions of pressure and magnetic field have been used to explore the relationship between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity, both of which involve the 4f electron of Ce. Results of these studies cannot be understood as a simple competition for Fermi-surface states and require a new conceptual framework.
In the correlated electron system with the pseudogap, there are full-gapped domains and Fermi-arced domains coexisting. Those domains are created by the quantum-fluctuated antiferromagnetic fluctuations that generate the short-ranged attractive potential to produce the Fermi arcs and the superconductivity. In the full-gapped domains, s-wave or (d_{x^2-y^2}\pm id_{xy})-wave symmetry of the electron pairs is favored. In the Fermi-arced domains, only d_{x^2-y^2}-wave symmetry of pairs is stable. Superconductivity of different pairing symmetry coexists in different domains, as well. Different from…
Recent experiments on twisted bilayer graphene have shown a high-temperature parent state with massless Dirac fermions and broken electronic flavor symmetry; superconductivity and correlated insulators emerge from this parent state at lower temperatures. We propose that the superconducting and correlated insulating orders are connected by Wess-Zumino-Witten terms, so that defects of one order contain quanta of another order and skyrmion fluctuations of the correlated insulator are a "mechanism" for superconductivity. We present a comprehensive listing of plausible low-temperature orders, and t…
It is very important to elucidate the mechanism of superconductivity for achieving room temperature superconductivity. This paper is a short review article on the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. In the first half of this paper, we give a brief review on mechanisms of superconductivity in many-electron systems. We believe that high-temperature superconductivity may occur in a system with interaction of large-energy scale. Empirically, this is true for superconductors that have been found so far. In the second half of this paper, we discuss cuprate high-temperature superconducto…
When bilayer graphene is rotationally faulted to an angle $θ\approx 1.1^\circ$, theory predicts the formation of a flat electronic band and correlated insulating, superconducting, and ferromagnetic states have all been observed at partial band filling. The proximity of superconductivity to correlated insulators has suggested a close relationship between these states, reminiscent of the cuprates where superconductivity arises by doping a Mott insulator. Here, we show that superconductivity can appear without correlated insulating states. While both superconductivity and correlated insulating be…
Using functional renormalization group method, we study the favorable condition for electronic correlation driven time reversal invariant topological superconductivity in symmetry class DIII. For non-centrosymmetric systems we argue that the proximity to ferromagnetic (or small wavevector magnetic) instability can be used as a guideline for the search of this type of superconductivity. This is analogous to the appearance of singlet unconventional superconductivity in the neighborhood of antiferromagnetic instability. We show three concrete examples where ferromagnetic-like fluctuation leads to…
Here we establish a more complete phase diagram for FeSe system, based on experimental results of nonstoichiometric Fe1-xSe single crystals that we have developed recently, as well as nearly stoichiometric FeSe single crystals. The electronic correlation is found to be strongly enhanced in hole-dominated Fe1-xSe, as compared with electron-dominated FeSe, from the magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements in the normal state. A superconducting dome is found to emerge starting from the strongly correlated hole-dominated regime with electron doping, while the tetragonal-orthor…
This is a "perspective" inspired by the forthcoming article, "What makes the $T_c$ of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO so high: a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo study," by Z-X. Li, F. Wang, H. Yao, and D-H. Lee, arXiv:1512.06179.
We present a novel route for attaining unconventional superconductivity (SC) in a strongly correlated system without doping. In a simple model of a correlated band insulator (BI) at half-filling we demonstrate, based on a generalization of the projected wavefunctions method, that SC emerges when e-e interactions and the bare band-gap are both much larger than the kinetic energy, provided the system has sufficient frustration against the magnetic order. As the interactions are tuned, SC appears sandwiched between the correlated BI followed by a paramagnetic metal on one side, and a ferrimagneti…
UTe2 is a promising candidate for spin-triplet superconductors, in which a paramagnetic normal state becomes superconducting due to spin fluctuations. The subsequent discovery of various unusual superconducting properties has promoted the use of UTe2 as an exciting playground to study unconventional superconductivity, but fathoming the normal state fermiology and its influence on the superconductivity still requires further investigation. Here, we theoretically show that electron correlation induces a dramatic change in the normal state fermiology with an emergent correlated Fermi surface (FS)…
Heterostructures containing strongly correlated electron systems provide a platform to clarify interplay of electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling in unconventional superconductors. Motivated by recent fabrication of artificially-engineered heavy fermion superlattices and high-temperature cuprate superconductors, we conduct a thorough study on superconductivity in Rashba-Hubbard model. In contrast to previous weak coupling approaches, we employ fluctuation-exchange approximation to describe quantum critical magnetic fluctuations and resulting superconductivity. As a result, robust…
Unconventional superconductivity (SC) is said to occur when Cooper pair formation is dominated by repulsive electron-electron interactions, so that the symmetry of the pair wavefunction is other than isotropic s-wave. The strong, on-site, repulsive electron-electron interactions that are the proximate cause of such superconductivity are more typically drivers of commensurate magnetism. Indeed, it is the suppression of commensurate antiferromagnetism (AF) that usually allows this type of unconventional superconductivity to emerge. Importantly, however, intervening between these AF and SC phases…
We review recent studies for superconductivity using diagrammatic extensions of dynamical mean field theory. These approaches take into account simultaneously both, the local correlation effect and spatial long-range fluctuations, which are essential to describe unconventional superconductivity in a quasi-two-dimensional plane. The results reproduce and predict the experimental phase diagrams of strongly correlated system such as cuprates and nickelates. Further studies reveal that the dynamical screening effect of the pairing interaction vertex has dramatic consequences for the transition tem…
We report an unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the iron chalcogenide film FeTe:O$_{x}$ below ~ 2.5 K. Instead of saturating like a mean-field behavior with a single order parameter, the measured low-temperature upper critical field increases progressively, suggesting a large supply of superconducting states accessible via magnetic field or low-energy thermal fluctuations. We demonstrate that superconducting states of finite momenta can be realized within the conventional theory, despite its questionable applicability. Our findings reveal a fundamental cha…
In quantum materials, electrons that have strong correlations tend to localize, leading to quantum spins as the building blocks for low-energy physics. When strongly correlated electrons coexist with more weakly-correlated conduction electrons, multiple channels of effective interactions develop and compete with each other. The competition creates quantum fluctuations having a large spectral weight, with the associated entropies reaching significant fractions of $R\ln 2$ per electron. Advancing a framework to understand how the fluctuating local moments influence unconventional superconductivi…
Studies on out-of-equilibrium dynamics have paved a way to realize a new state of matter. Especially, superconductor-like properties above room temperatures recently suggested in copper oxides achieved by selectively exciting vibrational phonon modes by laser have inspired studies on an alternative and general strategy to be pursued for high temperature superconductivity. Here, we show that the superconductivity can be enhanced by irradiating laser to correlated electron systems owing to two mechanisms: First, the effective attractive interaction of carriers is enhanced by the dynamical locali…
In this letter, we reported the results of NMR study on LiFeAs single crystals. We find a strong evidence of the low temperature spin fluctuations; by changing sample preparation conditions, the system can be tuned toward an spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum-critical point. The detection of an interstitial Li(2) ion, possibly locating in the tetrahedral hole, suggests that the off-stoichiometry and/or lattice defect can probably account for the absence of the SDW ordering in LiFeAs. These facts show that LiFeAs is a strongly correlated system and the superconductivity is likely originated from t…
In a recent X-ray absorption study in boron doped diamond, Nakamura et al. have seen a well isolated narrow boron impurity band in non-superconducting samples and an additional narrow band at the chemical potential in a superconducting sample. We interpret the beautiful spectra as evidence for upper Hubbard band of a Mott insulating impurity band and an additional metallic `mid-gap band' of a conducting `self-doped' Mott insulator. This supports the basic framework of a recent theory of the present author of strongly correlated impurity band superconductivity (SCIBS) in a template of a wide-ga…
On the basis of the recently proposed self-consistent theory of metal- insulator transition in strongly disordered systems, taking into account interaction effects, we study transition temperature $T_{c}$ suppression in disordered superconductors for the wide disorder interval --- from weakly disordered metal up to Anderson insulator, induced by "Coulomb pseudogap" formation in the density of states. It is shown that for a number of systems this theory provides rather satisfactory fit of experimental data.
We calculate the dynamic effective electron-electron interaction potential for a low density disordered two-dimensional electron gas. The disordered response function is used to calculate the effective potential where the scattering rate is taken from typical mobilities from recent experiments. We investigate the development of an effective attractive pair potential for both disordered and disorder free systems with correlations determined from existing numerical simulation data. The effect of disorder and correlations on the superconducting critical temperature Tc is discussed.
We consider a chain described by a next-nearest-neighbor hopping combined with a nearest-neighbor spin flip. In two dimensions this three-body term arises from a mapping of the three-band Hubbard model for CuO$_2$ planes to a generalized $t-J$ model and for large O-O hopping favors resonance-valence-bond superconductivity of predominantly $d$-wave symmetry. Solving the ground state and low-energy excitations by analytical and numerical methods we find that the chain is a Luther-Emery liquid with correlation exponent $K_ρ = (2-n)^2/2$, where $n$ is the particle density.
We extend the rotationally invariant formulation of the slave-boson method to superconducting states. This generalization, building on the recent work by Lechermann et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 76}, 155102 (2007)], allows to study superconductivity in strongly correlated systems. We apply the formalism to a specific case of strongly correlated superconductivity, as that found in a multi-orbital Hubbard model for alkali-doped fullerides, where the superconducting pairing has phonic origin, yet it has been shown to be favored by strong correlation owing to the symmetry of the interaction. The metho…
A microscopic theory of the electronic spectrum and of superconductivity within the t-J model on the honeycomb lattice is developed. We derive the equations for the normal and anomalous Green functions in terms of the Hubbard operators by applying the projection technique. Superconducting pairing of d + id'-type mediated by the antiferromagnetic exchange is found. The superconducting Tc as a function of hole doping exhibits a two-peak structure related to the van Hove singularities of the density of states for the two-band t-J model. At half-filling and for large enough values of the exchange …
Based on a hybrid interlayer coupling mechanism, we study the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in trilayer cuprates. By introducing an interlayer magnetic scattering term, we solve the multilayer $t{-}J$ model with Josephson coupling under the framework of Gutzwiller projection. We show that both the SC and AFM orders in the multilayered system are enhanced and the range of AFM order is extended. The layer configuration of d-wave pairing gap and AFM order further plays an essential role in determining the interlayer magnetic and superconducting coupling phase …
The slave boson mean-field studies of the ground state of the Hubbard model with correlated hopping were performed. The approach qualitatively recovers the exact results for the case of the hopping integral t equal to the correlated hopping integral X. The phase diagram for the strongly correlated state with only singly occupied sites, the weakly correlated state, where single and double occupation is allowed, and for the superconducting state, was determined for any values of X and any electron concentration n. At the half-filled band (n=1) a direct transition from the superconductor to the M…
We present a novel mechanism of s-wave pairing in Fe-based superconductors. The mechanism involves holes near dxz/dyz pockets only and is applicable primarily to strongly hole doped materials. We argue that as long as the renormalized Hund's coupling J exceeds the renormalized inter-orbital Hubbard repulsion U', any finite spin-orbit coupling gives rise to s-wave superconductivity. This holds even at weak coupling and regardless of the strength of the intra-orbital Hubbard repulsion U. The transition temperature grows as the hole density decreases. The pairing gaps are four-fold symmetric, but…
Confirmation of the phononic origin of Cooper pair formation in superconductors came with the demonstration that the interaction was retarded and that the corresponding energy scales were associated with phonons. Using cellular dynamical mean-field theory for the two-dimensional Hubbard model, we identify such retardation effects in d-wave pairing and associate the corresponding energy scales with short-range spin fluctuations. We find which frequencies are relevant for pairing as a function of interaction strength and doping and show that the disappearance of superconductivity on the overdope…
A new organic superconductor, possibly with formula $K_3$ p-terphenyl, has been discovered by Wang, Gao, Huang and Chen, reaching a very high $T_c$ of about 120~K. Besides a clear diamagnetic signal, most other details such as stoichiometry and structure are yet unknown. However, pristine p-terphenyl has a familiar $P2_1/a$ staggered bimolecular structure, and it can be reasonably assumed that a similar bimolecular structure could be retained by hypothetical $K_3$ p-terphenyl. We point out that the resulting 2-narrow band metal would support the same $s_{\pm}$ superconductivity recently propos…

We use a Luttinger-Ward functional approach to study the problem of phonon-mediated superconductivity in electron systems with strong electron-electron interactions (EEIs). Our derivation does not rely on an expansion in skeleton diagrams for the EEI and the resulting theory is therefore nonperturbative in the strength of the latter. We show that one of the building blocks of the theory is the irreducible six-leg vertex related to EEIs. Diagrammatically, this implies five contributions (one of the Fock and four of the Hartree type) to the electronic self-energy, which, to the best of our knowl…
Near a Mott transition, strong electron correlations may enhance Cooper pairing. This is demonstrated in the Dynamical Mean Field Theory solution of a twofold-orbital degenerate Hubbard model with inverted Hund's rules on-site exchange, which favors local spin-singlet configurations. Close to the Mott insulator, which is a local version of a valence bond insulator, a pseudogap non-Fermi-liquid metal, a superconductor, and a normal metal appear, in striking similarity with the physics of the cuprates. The strongly correlated superconducting state has a larger Drude weight than the corresponding…
In this paper we investigate the role of the electronic correlation on the hole doping dependence of electron-phonon and superconducting properties of cuprates. We introduce a simple analytical expression for the one-particle Green's function in the presence of electronic correlation and we evaluate the reduction of the screening properties as the electronic correlation increases by approaching half-filling. The poor screening properties play an important role within the context of the nonadiabatic theory of superconductivity. We show that a consistent inclusion of the reduced screening proper…
The electronic properties of correlated metals with a strong electron-phonon coupling may be understood in terms of a combination of Landau's Fermi-liquid theory and the strong-coupling theory of Migdal and Eliashberg. In these lecture notes we discuss the microscopic foundations of this phenomenological Fermi-liquid model of correlated, strong-coupling metals. We formulate the basic equations of the model, which are quasiclassical transport equations that describe both equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena for the normal and superconducting states of a metal. Our emphasis is on supercondu…
Correlated ad-atom systems on the Si(111) surface have recently attracted an increased attention as strongly correlated systems with a rich phase diagram. We study these materials by a single band model on the triangular lattice including 1/r long-range interaction. Employing the recently proposed TRILEX method we find an unconventional superconducting phase of chiral d-wave symmetry in hole-doped systems. The superconductivity is driven simultaneously by both charge and spin fluctuations and is strongly enhanced by the long-range tail of the interaction. We provide an analysis of the relevant…
We study a Hubbard hamiltonian, including a quite general nearest-neighbor interaction, parametrized by repulsion V, exchange interactions Jz, Jperp, bond-charge interaction X and hopping of pairs W. The case of correlated hopping, in which the hopping between nearest neighbors depends upon the occupation of the two sites involved, is also described by the model for sufficiently weak interactions. We study the model in one dimension with usual continuum-limit field theory techniques, and determine the phase diagram. For arbitrary filling, we find a very simple necessary condition for the exist…
MgB$(p^{n_σ}p^{n_π})_{2}$ is classified as a system with strongly interacting $σ$-electrons and non-correlated $π$-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interaction V between the orbitally degenerated $σ$-electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of s*-wave symmetry. The critical temperature $T_c$ has a non-monotonic dependence on the distance r between the centers of gravity of $σ$- and $π$-bands. MgB$_2$ corresponds to r=0.085 eV and V=0.45 eV in our model with flat bands. The derived superconducting density of electronic states is in good agreement wit…
We investigate the phase diagram of two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model by employing the optimization variational Monte Carlo method. The 2D Hubbard model is the most simple electronic model for cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The phase diagram consists of three regions; they are antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) region, superconducting (SC) region and the coexistent region of superconductivity and antiferromgantism. The phase diagram obtained by numerical calculations well agrees with the experimental phase diagram for high-temperature cuprates. We mainly focused on the effect of $t'…
A theoretical analysis of the superconductivity observed recently in Carbon nanotubes is proposed. We argue that ultra-small (diameter $ \sim 0.4 nm$) single wall carbon nanotubes (with transition temperature $T_c\sim 15 ^{o}K$) and entirely end-bonded multi-walled ones ($T_c\sim 12 ^{o}K$) can superconduct by an electronic mechanism, basically the same in both cases. By a Luttinger liquid -like approach, one finds enhanced superconducting correlations due to the strong screening of the long-range part of the Coulomb repulsion. Based on this finding, we perform a detailed analysis on the resul…

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are self-assemblies of metal ions and organic ligands, provide a tunable platform to search a new state of matter. A two-dimensional (2D) perfect kagome lattice, whose geometrical frustration is a key to realizing quantum spin liquids, has been formed in the $π$-${d}$ conjugated 2D MOF [Cu$_{3}$(C$_{6}$S$_{6}$)]$_{n}$ (Cu-BHT). The recent discovery of its superconductivity with a critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of 0.25\,kelvin raises fundamental questions about the nature of electron pairing. Here, we show that Cu-BHT is a strongly correlated unconventio…
We report neutron scattering measurements, which reveal spin-liquid polymorphism in a '11' iron chalcogenide superconductor, a poorly-metallic magnetic FeTe tuned towards superconductivity by substitution of a small amount of Tellurium with iso-electronic Sulphur. We observe liquid-like magnetic dynamics, which is described by a competition of two phases with different local structure, whose relative abundance depends on temperature. One is the ferromagnetic (FM) plaquette phase observed in the non-superconducting FeTe, which preserves the C$_4$ symmetry of the underlying square lattice and is…
We propose a mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in two-dimensional strongly-correlated electron systems. We consider a two-dimensional Kondo lattice system or double-exchange system with spin-orbit coupling arising from buckling of the plane. We show that a Chern-Simons term is induced for a gauge field describing the phase fluctuations of the localized spins. Through the induced Chern-Simons term, carriers behave like skyrmion excitations that lead to a destruction mechanism of magnetic long-range order by carrier doping. After magnetic long-range order is destroyed by carrier dopi…
An orbitally degenerate two-band Hubbard model is analyzed with inclusion of the Hund's rule induced spin-triplet paired states and their coexistence with magnetic ordering. The so-called statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation (SGA) has been applied to the case of a square lattice. The superconducting gaps, the magnetic moment, and the free energy are analyzed as a function of the Hund's rule coupling strength and the band filling. Also, the influence of the intersite hybridization on the stability of paired phases is discussed. In order to examine the effect of correlations the res…
Based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have investigated the mechanism of high $T_c$ superconductivity in stoichiometric LiFeAs. The calculated spectrum is in excellent agreement with the observed ARPES measurement. The Fermi surface (FS) nesting, which is predicted in the conventional density functional theory method, is suppressed due to the orbital-dependent correlation effect with the DMFT method. We have shown that such marginal breakdown of the FS nesting is an essential condition to the spin-fluctuation mediated supercon…
