Asymptotic symmetries of AdS$_4$ quantum gravity and gauge theory are derived by coupling the dual CFT$_3$ to Chern-Simons gauge theory and 3D gravity in a "probe" large-level limit. The infinite-dimensional symmetries are shown to arise when one is restricted to boundary subspaces with effectively two-dimensional geometry. A canonical example of such a restriction occurs within the 4D subregion described by a Wheeler-DeWitt wavefunctional of AdS$_4$ quantum gravity. An AdS$_4$ analog of Minkowski "super-rotation" asymptotic symmetry is probed by 3D Einstein gravity, yielding CFT$_2$ structure, via AdS$_3$ foliation of AdS$_4$ and the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. The maximal asymptotic symmetry is however probed by 3D conformal gravity. Both 3D gravities have Chern-Simons formulation, manifesting their topological character. Chern-Simons structure is also shown to be emergent in the Poincare patch of AdS$_4$, as soft/boundary limits of 4D gauge theory, rather than "put in by hand", with a finite effective Chern-Simons level. Several of the considerations of asymptotic symmetry structure are found to be simpler for AdS$_4$ than for Mink$_4$, such as non-zero 4D particle masses, 4D non-perturbative "hard" effects, and consistency with unitarity. The last of these, in particular, is greatly simplified, because in some set-ups the time dimension is explicitly shared by each level of description: Lorentzian AdS$_4$, CFT$_3$ and CFT$_2$. The CFT$_2$ structure clarifies the sense in which the infinite asymptotic charges constitute a useful form of "hair" for black holes and other complex 4D states. An AdS$_4$ (holographic) "shadow" analog of Minkowski "memory" effects is derived. Lessons from AdS$_4$ provide hints for better understanding Minkowski asymptotic symmetries, the 3D structure of its soft limits, and Minkowski holography.
We discuss some aspects related to holography of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) dyonic hairy black holes, which break the conformal symetry of the boundary. We use counterterms for the scalar field that satisfies mixed boundary conditions to compute the Euclidean action and dual stress tensor. We apply these results to show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula is not satisfied. However, when the magnetic (or electric) charge vanishes, the conformal symmetry is preserved and the entropy of the black hole can be put in the Cardy-Verlinde form. In our analysis, there is no need of adding extra finite counterter…
We consider the linear stability of $4$-dimensional hairy black holes with mixed boundary conditions in Anti-de Sitter spacetime. We focus on the mass of scalar fields around the maximally supersymmetric vacuum of the gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity in four dimensions, $m^{2}=-2l^{-2}$. It is shown that the Schrödinger operator on the half-line, governing the $S^{2}$, $H^{2}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ invariant mode around the hairy black hole, allows for non-trivial self-adjoint extensions and each of them correspons to a class of mixed boundary conditions in the gravitational theory. Discardin…
We revisit the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories and their supergravity duals in the context of generalized symmetries. This allows us to finally clarify how the $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ and $(SU(N)\times SU(N))/\mathbb{Z}_N$ theories, as well as other quotient theories that have recently been discussed, fit into the holographic framework. It also resolves a long standing puzzle regarding the di-baryon operator in the $U(N)\times U(N)$ theory.
We consider toy models of holography arising from 3d Chern-Simons theory. In this context a duality to an ensemble average over 2d CFTs has been recently proposed. We put forward an alternative approach in which, rather than summing over bulk geometries, one gauges a one-form global symmetry of the bulk theory. This accomplishes two tasks: it ensures that the bulk theory has no global symmetries, as expected for a theory of quantum gravity, and it makes the partition function on spacetimes with boundaries coincide with that of a modular-invariant 2d CFT on the boundary. In particular, on wormh…
The aim of these Lectures is to provide a brief overview of the subject of asymptotic symmetries of gauge and gravity theories in asymptotically flat spacetimes as background material for celestial holography.
We study the holographic duals of four-dimensional field theories with 1-form global symmetries, both discrete and continuous. Such higher-form global symmetries are associated with antisymmetric tensor gauge fields in the bulk. Various different realizations are possible: we demonstrate that a Maxwell action for the bulk antisymmetric gauge field results in a non-conformal field theory with a marginally running double-trace coupling. We explore its hydrodynamic behavior at finite temperature and make contact with recent symmetry-based formulations of magnetohydrodynamics. We also argue that d…
We argue that the infinitely many gauge symmetries of string theory provide an infinite set of conserved (gauge) quantum numbers (W-hair) which characterise black hole states and maintain quantum coherence, even during exotic processes like black hole evaporation/decay. We study ways of measuring the W-hair of spherically-symmetric four-dimensional objects with event horizons, treated as effectively two-dimensional string black holes. Measurements can be done either through the s-wave scattering of light particles off the string black-hole background, or through interference experiments of Aha…
We study confinement in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ Super-Yang Mills (SYM) from a holographic point of view, focusing on the 1-form symmetry and its relation to chiral symmetry breaking. In the 5d supergravity dual, obtained by truncation of the Klebanov-Strassler solution, we identify the topological couplings that determine the 1-form symmetry and its 't Hooft anomalies. One such coupling is a mixed 0-form/1-form symmetry anomaly closely related to chiral symmetry breaking in gapped confining vacua. From the dual gravity description we also identify the infra-red (IR) 4d topological field the…
Gauge symmetries are known to be respected by gravity because gauge charges carry flux lines, but global charges do not carry flux lines and are not conserved by gravitational interaction. For discrete symmetries, they are spontaneously broken in the Universe, forming domain walls. Since the realization of discrete symmetries in the Universe must involve the vacuum expectation values of Higgs fields, a string-like configuration (hair) at the intersection of domain walls in the Higgs vacua can be realized. Therefore, we argue that discrete charges are also respected by gravity.
We discuss aspects of holography in the AdS_3 \times S^p near string geometry of a collection of straight fundamental heterotic strings. We use anomalies and symmetries to determine general features of the dual CFT. The symmetries suggest the appearance of nonlinear superconformal algebras, and we show how these arise in the framework of holographic renormalization methods. The nonlinear algebras imply intricate formulas for the central charge, and we show that in the bulk these correspond to an infinite series of quantum gravity corrections. We also makes some comments on the worldsheet sigma…
We study the near horizon geometry of both static and stationary extremal Oliva Tempo Troncoso (OTT) black holes. For each of these cases, a set of consistent asymptotic conditions is introduced. The canonical generator for the static configuration is shown to be regular. For the rotating OTT black hole, the asymptotic symmetry is described by the time reparametrization, the chiral Virasoro and centrally extended $u(1)$ Kac-Moody algebras.
Having in mind extensions of 2D holography beyond the Jackiw-Teitelboim model we propose holographic counterterms and asymptotic conditions for a family of asymptotically AdS$_2$ dilaton gravity models leading to a consistent variational problem and a finite on-shell action. We show the presence of asymptotic Virasoro symmetries in all these models. The Schwarzian action generates (a part) of the equations of motion governing the asymptotic degrees of freedom. We also analyse the applicability of various entropy formulae. By a dilaton-dependent conformal transformation our results are extended…
In this paper, we find mechanisms for the generation of Fermi arcs using the gauge/gravity correspondence. The gravity background is taken to be a charged black hole with vector hair in asymptotically AdS4 spacetime. The response function of fermion probes exhibits a p-wave gap in the dual superconductor. We couple the fermions to a charged rank-two antisymmetric field. Assuming that its spatial components condense, a novel type of open Fermi surface is produced. We derive an analytical formula for the Green's function and study its unique properties. The results are confirmed by separate nume…
The fluid-gravity correspondence provides us with explicit spacetime metrics that are holographically dual to (non-)relativistic nonlinear hydrodynamics. The vacuum Einstein equations, in the presence of a Killing vector, possess solution-generating symmetries known as spacetime Ehlers transformations. These form a subgroup of the larger generalized Ehlers group acting on spacetimes with arbitrary matter content. We apply this generalized Ehlers group, in the presence of Killing isometries, to vacuum metrics with hydrodynamic duals to develop a formalism for solution-generating transformations…
Any recipe to grow black hole hair has to circumvent no-hair theorems by violating some of their assumptions. Recently discovered hairy black hole solutions exist due to the fact that their scalar fields don't inherit the symmetries of the spacetime metric. We present here a general analysis of the constraints which limit the possible forms of such a hair, for both the real and the complex scalar fields. These results can be taken as a novel piece of the black hole uniqueness theorems or simply as a symmetry noninheriting Ansätze guide. In addition we introduce new classification of the gravit…
We investigate whether supertranslation symmetry may appear in a scenario that involves black holes in AdS space. The framework we consider is massive 3D gravity, which admits a rich black hole phase space, including stationary AdS black holes with softly decaying hair. We consider a set of asymptotic conditions that permits such decaying near the boundary, and which, in addition to the local conformal symmetry, is preserved by an extra local current. The corresponding algebra of diffeomorphisms consists of two copies of Virasoro algebra in semi-direct sum with an infinite-dimensional Abelian …
The space of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories exhibits an intricate structure of global one-form symmetries and $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality orbits. In this paper we study this structure from the point of view of the holographic dual Type IIB string theory. Generalizing work by Witten, we map the different theories based on the gauge algebras $su(N)$, $so(N)$, and $sp(N)$ to a choice of boundary conditions on bulk gauge fields. We show how the one-form symmetries and their anomalies, as well as the duality properties of the gauge theories, arise in the holographic picture. Along t…
We use holography to study $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$, SU($N_{\rm \tiny{c}}$) super Yang-Mills coupled to $N_{\rm \tiny{F}} \ll N_{\rm \tiny{c}}$ quark flavors. We place the theory at finite isospin density $n_{\rm \tiny{I}}$ by turning on an isospin chemical potential $μ_{\rm \tiny{I}}=M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$, with $M_{\rm \tiny{q}}$ the quark mass. We also turn on two R-symmetry charge densities $n_1=n_2$. We show that the ground state is a supersymmetric, superfluid, color superconductor, namely a finite-density state that preserves a fraction of supersymmetry in which part of the global symmetries a…
Assuming the existence of a field theory in D dimensions dual to (D+1)-dimensional flat space, governed by the asymptotic symmetries of flat space, we make some preliminary remarks about the properties of this field theory. We review briefly some successes of the 3d bulk - 2d boundary case and then focus on the 4d bulk - 3d boundary example, where the symmetry in question is the infinite dimensional BMS4 algebra. We look at the constraints imposed by this symmetry on a 3d field theory by constructing highest weight representations of this algebra. We construct two and three point functions of …
We consider a free topological model in 5D euclidean flat spacetime, built from two rank-2 tensor fields. Despite the fact that the bulk of the model does not have any particular physical interpretation, on its 4D planar edge nontrivial gauge field theories are recovered, whose features are entirely determined by the gauge and discrete symmetries of the bulk. In particular no 4D dynamics can be obtained without imposing a Time Reversal invariance in the bulk. Remarkably, one of the two possible edge models selected by the Time Reversal symmetries displays a true electromagnetic duality, which …
This is a short review on selected theory developments on Tensor Network (TN) states for strongly correlated systems. Specifically, we briefly review the effect of symmetries in TN states, fermionic TNs, the calculation of entanglement Hamiltonians from Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), and the relation between the Multi-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA) and the AdS/CFT or gauge/gravity duality. We stress the role played by entanglement in the emergence of several physical properties and objects through the TN language. Some recent results along these lines are also discus…
We study the recently proposed AdS$_7$/CFT$_6$ dualities for a class of 6d $\mathcal{N} = (1,0)$ theories that flow on the tensor branch to long linear quiver gauge theories. We find a precise agreement in the symmetries and in the spectrum of charged states between the 6d SCFTs and their conjectured AdS$_7$ duals. We also confirm a recent conjecture that a discrete $S_N$ symmetry relating the baryons in the quiver theories is in fact gauged.
Inspired by the recent proposal of soft hair on black holes in Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 231301 (2016), we have shown that an isolated horizon carries soft hairs implanted by electromagnetic fields. The solution space and the asymptotic symmetries of Einstein-Maxwell theory have been worked out explicitly near isolated horizon. The conserved current has been computed and an infinite number of near horizon charges have been introduced from the electromagnetic fields associated to the asymptotic $U(1)$ symmetry near the horizon, which indicates the fact that isolated horizon carries a large amount o…
In this paper, we suggest that there are two different individual 2D CFTs holographically dual to the Kerr-Newman black hole, coming from the corresponding two possible limits --- the Kerr/CFT and Reissner-Nordström/CFT correspondences, namely there exist the Kerr-Newman/CFTs dualities. A probe scalar field at low frequencies turns out can exhibit two different 2D conformal symmetries (named by $J$- and $Q$-pictures, respectively) in its equation of motion when the associated parameters are suitably specified. These twofold dualities are supported by the matchings of entropies, absorption cros…
We analyse vortex hair for charged rotating asymptotically AdS black holes in the abelian Higgs model. We give analytical and numerical arguments to show how the vortex interacts with the horizon of the black hole, and how the solution extends to the boundary. The solution is very close to the corresponding asymptotically flat vortex, once one transforms to a frame that is non-rotating at the boundary. We show that there is a Meissner effect for extremal black holes, with the vortex flux being expelled from sufficiently small black holes. The phase transition is shown to be first order in the …

In this letter we use the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence to establish a set of old conjectures about symmetries in quantum gravity. These are that no global symmetries are possible, that internal gauge symmetries must come with dynamical objects that transform in all irreducible representations, and that internal gauge groups must be compact. These conjectures are not obviously true from a bulk perspective, they are nontrivial consequences of the non-perturbative consistency of the correspondence. More details of and background for these arguments are presented …
General covariance is the cornerstone of Einstein's General Relativity (GR) and implies that any two metrics related by diffeomorphisms are physically equivalent. There are, however, many examples pointing to the fact that this strict statement of general covariance needs refinement. There are a very special (measure-zero) subset of diffeomorphisms, the residual diffeomrphisms, to which one can associate well-defined conserved charges. This would hence render these diffeomorphic geometries physically distinct. We discuss that these symmetries may be appropriately called "symplectic symmetries"…
We present a revisitation of the Almheiri-Polchinski dilaton gravity model from a two-dimensional (2D) bulk perspective. We describe a peculiar feature of the model, namely the pattern of conformal symmetry breaking using bulk Killing vectors, a covariant definition of mass and the flow between different vacua of the theory. We show that the effect of the symmetry breaking is both the generation of an infrared scale (a mass gap) and to make local the Goldstone modes associated with the asymptotic symmetries of the 2D spacetime. In this way a non vanishing central charge is generated in the dua…
The asymptotic group of symmetries at null infinity of flat spacetimes in three and four dimensions is the infinite dimensional Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group. This has recently been shown to be isomorphic to non-relativistic conformal algebras in one lower dimension, the Galilean Conformal Algebra (GCA) in 2d and a closely related non-relativistic algebra in 3d [1]. We provide a better understanding of this surprising connection by providing a spacetime interpretation in terms of a novel contraction. The 2d GCA, obtained from a linear combination of two copies of the Virasoro algebra, is gen…
A new topological conformal field theory in four Euclidean dimensions is constructed from N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by twisting the whole of the conformal group with the whole of the R-symmetry group, resulting in a theory that is conformally invariant and has two conformally invariant BRST operators. A curved space generalisation is found on any Riemannian 4-fold. This formulation has local Weyl invariance and two Weyl-invariant BRST symmetries, with an action and energy-momentum tensor that are BRST-exact. This theory is expected to have a holographic dual in 5-dimensional de Sitter space.
We study a three-dimensional N=3 U(N)_k x U(N)_{-k} Chern-Simons matter theory with flavour, corresponding to the N=6 Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena CSM theory coupled to 2N_f fundamental fields. The dual holographic description is given by the near-horizon geometry of N M2-branes at a particular hypertoric geometry M_8. We explicitly construct the space M_8 and match its isometries to the global symmetries of the field theory. We also discuss the model in the quenched approximation by embedding probe D6-branes in AdS_4 x CP^3.
In 2+1 dimensions at finite temperature, spontaneous symmetry breaking of global symmetries is precluded by large thermal fluctuations of the order parameter. The holographic correspondence implies that analogous effects must also occur in 3+1 dimensional theories with gauged symmetries in certain curved spacetimes with horizon. By performing a one loop computation in the background of a holographic superconductor, we show that bulk quantum fluctuations wash out the classical order parameter at sufficiently large distance scales. The low temperature phase is seen to exhibit algebraic long rang…
We consider N=8 gauged supergravity in D=4 and D=5. We show one can weaken the boundary conditions on the metric and on all scalars with $m^2 <-{(D-1)^2 \over 4}+1$, while preserving the asymptotic anti-de Sitter (AdS) symmetries. Each scalar admits a one-parameter family of AdS-invariant boundary conditions for which the metric falls off slower than usual. The generators of the asymptotic symmetries are finite, but generically acquire a contribution from the scalars. For a large class of boundary conditions we numerically find a one-parameter family of black holes with scalar hair. These solu…
We formulate four-dimensional conformal gravity with (Anti-)de Sitter boundary conditions that are weaker than Starobinsky boundary conditions, allowing for an asymptotically subleading Rindler term concurrent with a recent model for gravity at large distances. We prove the consistency of the variational principle and derive the holographic response functions. One of them is the conformal gravity version of the Brown-York stress tensor, the other is a `partially massless response'. The on-shell action and response functions are finite and do not require holographic renormalization. Finally, we…
We define and study asymptotic Killing and conformal Killing vectors in $d$-dimensional Minkowski, (A)dS, $\mathbb{R}\times S^{d-1}$ and ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^{d-2}$. We construct the associated quantum charges for an arbitrary CFT and show they satisfy a closed algebra that includes the BMS as a sub-algebra (i.e. supertranslations and superrotations) plus a novel transformation we call `superdilations'. We study representations of this algebra in the Hilbert space of the CFT, as well as the action of the finite transformations obtained by exponentiating the charges. In the context of the AdS/C…
Hydrodynamics is a theory of long-range excitations controlled by equations of motion that encode the conservation of a set of currents (energy, momentum, charge, etc.) associated with explicitly realized global symmetries. If a system possesses additional weakly broken symmetries, the low-energy hydrodynamic degrees of freedom also couple to a few other "approximately conserved" quantities with parametrically long relaxation times. It is often useful to consider such approximately conserved operators and corresponding new massive modes within the low-energy effective theory, which we refer to…
We consider holography of two pp-wave metrics in conformal gravity, their one point functions, and asymptotic symmetries. One of the metrics is a generalization of the standard pp-waves in Einstein gravity to conformal gravity. The holography of this metric shows that within conformal gravity one can have realised solution which has non-vanishing partially massless response (PMR) tensor even for vanishing subleading term in the Fefferman-Graham expansion (i.e. Neumann boundary conditions), and vice-versa.
Holography relates the quasinormal modes frequencies of AdS black holes to the pole structure of the dual field theory propagator. These modes thus provide the timescale for the approach to thermal equilibrium in the CFT. Here, we study how such pole structure and, in particular, the time to equilibrium can get modified in the presence of a black hole hair. More precisely, we consider in AdS a set of relaxed boundary conditions that allow for a low decaying graviton mode near the boundary, which triggers an additional degree of freedom. We solve the scalar field response on such background ana…
Many non-relativistic Quantum Field Theories with conserved particle number share a common set of symmetries: time dependent spatial diffeomorphisms acting on the background metric and U(1) invariance acting on the background fields which couple to particle number. Here we use these symmetries to deduce a gravity dual for any such theory in terms of a non-relativistic theory of gravity, a variant of Horava gravity. This duality allows the extension of holography to generic non-relativistic field theories. As Horava gravity is presumed to be a consistent quantum theory, this duality also allows…
We investigate a dilaton gravity model in AdS$_2$ proposed by Almheiri and Polchinski and develop a 1d effective description in terms of a dynamical boundary time with a Schwarzian derivative action. We show that the effective model is equivalent to a 1d version of Liouville theory, and investigate its dynamics and symmetries via a standard canonical framework. We include the coupling to arbitrary conformal matter and analyze the effective action in the presence of possible sources. We compute commutators of local operators at large time separation, and match the result with the time shift due…
