In a description of physical systems with Langevin equations, interacting degrees of freedom are usually coupled through symmetric parameter matrices. This coupling symmetry is a consequence of time-reversal symmetry of the involved conservative forces. If coupling parameters fluctuate randomly, the resulting noise is called multiplicative. For example, mechanical oscillators can be coupled through a fluctuating, symmetric matrix of spring "constants". Such systems exhibit well-studied instabilities. In this note, we study the complementary case of antisymmetric, time-reversal symmetry breaking coupling that can be realized with Lorentz forces or various gyrators. We consider the case that these antisymmetric couplings fluctuate. This type of multiplicative noise does not lead to instabilities in the stationary state but renormalizes the effective non-equilibrium friction. Fluctuating Lorentz-force-like couplings also allow to control and rectify heat transfer. A noteworthy property of this mechanism of producing asymmetric heat flux is that the controlling couplings do not exchange energy with the system..
A generalized Langevin equation with fluctuating diffusivity (GLEFD) is proposed, and it is shown that the GLEFD satisfies a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation. If the memory kernel is a power law, the GLEFD exhibits anomalous subdiffusion, non-Gaussianity, and stretched-exponential relaxation. The case in which the memory kernel is given by a single exponential function is also investigated as an analytically tractable example. In particular, the mean-square displacement and the self-intermediate-scattering function of this system show plateau structures. A numerical scheme to integ…
We demonstrate that a Langevin equation that describes the motion of a Brownian particle under non-equilibrium conditions can be exactly transformed to a special equation that explicitly exhibits the response of the velocity to a time dependent perturbation. This transformation is constructed on the basis of an operator formulation originally used in nonlinear perturbation theory for differential equations by extending it to stochastic analysis. We find that the obtained expression is useful for the calculation of fundamental quantities of the system, and that it provides a physical basis for …
We derive the fluctuating hydrodynamic equation for the number and momentum densities exactly from the underdamped Langevin equation. This derivation is an extension of the Kawasaki-Dean formula in underdamped case. The steady state probability distribution of the number and momentum densities field can be expressed by the kinetic and potential energies. In the massless limit, the obtained fluctuating hydrodynamic equation reduces to the Kawasaki-Dean equation. Moreover, the derived equation corresponds to the field equation derived from the canonical equation when the friction coefficient is …
Recently, anomalous subdiffusion, aging, and scatter of the diffusion coefficient have been reported in many single-particle-tracking experiments, though origins of these behaviors are still elusive. Here, as a model to describe such phenomena, we investigate a Langevin equation with diffusivity fluctuating between a fast and a slow state. We assume that the sojourn time distributions of these two states are given by power laws. It is shown that, for a non-equilibrium ensemble, the ensemble-averaged mean square displacement (MSD) shows transient subdiffusion. In contrast, the time-averaged MSD…
We consider Langevin equation with dichotomously fluctuating diffusivity, where the diffusion coefficient changes dichotomously in time, in order to study fluctuations of time-averaged observables in temporary heterogeneous diffusion process. We find that occupation time statistics is a powerful tool for calculating the time-averaged mean square displacement in the model. We show that the time-averaged diffusion coefficients are intrinsically random when the mean sojourn time for one of the states diverges. Our model provides anomalous fluctuations of time-averaged diffusivity, which have rele…
We study a granular gas heated by a stochastic thermostat in the dilute limit. Starting from the kinetic equations governing the evolution of the correlation functions, a Boltzmann-Langevin equation is constructed. The spectrum of the corresponding linearized Boltzmann-Fokker-Planck operator is analyzed, and the equation for the fluctuating transverse velocity is derived in the hydrodynamic limit. The noise term (Langevin force) is thus known microscopically and contains two terms: one coming from the thermostat and the other from the fluctuating pressure tensor. At variance with the free cool…
The mean-square displacement (MSD) is widely utilized to study the dynamical properties of stochastic processes. The time-averaged MSD (TAMSD) provides some information on the dynamics which cannot be extracted from the ensemble-averaged MSD. In particular, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the TAMSD can be utilized to study the long time relaxation behavior. In this work, we consider a class of Langevin equations which are multiplicatively coupled to time-dependent and fluctuating diffusivities. Various interesting dynamics models such as entangled polymers and supercooled liquids can …
Systems in which the heat flux depends on the direction of the flow are said to present thermal rectification. This effect has attracted much theoretical and experimental interest in recent years. However, in most theoretical models the effect is found to vanish in the thermodynamic limit, in disagreement with experiment. The purpose of this paper is to show that the rectification may be restored by including an energy-conserving noise which randomly flips the velocity of the particles with a certain rate $λ$. It is shown that as long as $λ$ is non-zero, the rectification remains finite in the…
Starting from the kinetic equations for the fluctuations and correlations of a dilute gas of inelastic hard spheres or disks, a Boltzmann-Langevin equation for the one-particle distribution function of the homogeneous cooling state is constructed. This equation is the linear Boltzmann equation with a fluctuating white noise term. Balance equations for the fluctuating hydrodynamic fields are derived. New fluctuating forces appear as compared with the elastic limit. The particular case of the transverse velocity field is investigated in detail. Its fluctuations can be described by means of a Lan…
We study heat rectification in a minimalistic model composed of two masses subjected to on-site and coupling linear forces in contact with effective Langevin baths induced by laser interactions. Analytic expressions of the heat currents in the steady state are spelled out. Asymmetric heat transport is found in this linear system if both the bath temperatures and the temperature dependent bath-system couplings are also exchanged.
We present a novel hybrid but thermodynamic approach to provide an alternative to the Langevin equation by using system-intrinsic (SI) microwork done by the Brownian particle in the kth microstate (realization). The corresponding SI-microforce is unique to the microstate and determines the microscopic equation of motion for it. Being a thermodynamic approach, the equipartition theorem is always satisfied and no additional stochastic Langevin force is needed. We determine instantaneous and long-time averages of useful quantities and thus provide a new unified approach to the fluctuating motion …
Dynamical random walk of classical particle in thermodynamically equilibrium fluctuating medium, - Gaussian random potential field, - is considered in the framework of explicit stochastic representation of deterministic interactions. We discuss corresponding formally exact Langevin equations for the particle's trajectory and show that Marcovian kinetic equation approximation to them is inadequate, - even (and especially) in case of spatially-temporally short-correlated field, - since ignores such actual effects of exponential instability of the trajectory (in respect to small perturbations) as…
We study fluctuating tilt Brownian ratchets based on fractional subdiffusion in sticky viscoelastic media characterized by a power law memory kernel. Unlike the normal diffusion case the rectification effect vanishes in the adiabatically slow modulation limit and optimizes in a driving frequency range. It is shown also that anomalous rectification effect is maximal (stochastic resonance effect) at optimal temperature and can exhibit a surprisingly good quality. Moreover, subdiffusive current can flow in the counter-intuitive direction upon a change of temperature or driving frequency. The depe…
We show that in driven systems the Gaussian nature of the fluctuating force and time-reversibility are equivalent properties. This result together with the potential condition of the external force drastically restricts the form of the probability distribution function, which can be shown to satisfy time-independent relations. We have corroborated this feature by explicitly analyzing a model for the stretching of a polymer and a model for a suspension of non-interacting Brownian particles in steady flow.
We present a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation that describes also the dissipative dynamics of a trapped partially Bose condensed gas. It takes the form of a complex nonlinear Schrödinger equation with noise. We consider an approximation to this Langevin field equation that preserves the correct equilibrium for both the condensed and the noncondensed parts of the gas. We then use this formalism to describe the reversible formation of a one-dimensional Bose condensate, and compare with recent experiments. In addition, we determine the frequencies and the damping of collective modes in this …
We study fluctuating dynamics of a freely movable piston that separates an infinite cylinder into two regions filled with ideal gas particles at the same pressure but different temperatures. To investigate statistical properties of the time-averaged velocity of the piston in the long-time limit, we perturbatively calculate the large deviation function of the time-averaged velocity. Then, we derive an infinite number of effective Langevin equations yielding the same large deviation function as in the original model. Finally, we provide two possibilities for uniquely determining the form of the …

We investigate the ensemble and time averaged mean squared displacements for particle diffusion in a simple model for disordered media by assuming that the local diffusivity is both fluctuating in time and has a deterministic average growth or decay in time. In this study we compare computer simulations of the stochastic Langevin equation for this random diffusion process with analytical results. We explore the regimes of normal Brownian motion as well as anomalous diffusion in the sub- and superdiffusive regimes. We also consider effects of the inertial term on the particle motion. The invest…
Energy transport equations are derived directly from full molecular dynamics models as coarse-grained description. With the local energy chosen as the coarse-grained variables, we apply the Mori-Zwanzig formalism to derive a reduced model, in the form of a generalized Langevin equation. A Markovian embedding technique is then introduced to eliminate the history dependence. In sharp contrast to conventional energy transport models, this derivation yields {\it stochastic} dynamics models for the spatially averaged energy. We discuss the approximation of the random force using both additive and m…
The persistence behavior for fluctuating steps on the $Si(111)$ $(\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3)R30^{0} - Al$ surface was determined by analyzing time-dependent STM images for temperatures between 770 and 970K. The measured persistence probability follows a power law decay with an exponent of $θ=0.77 \pm 0.03$. This is consistent with the value of $θ= 3/4$ predicted for attachment/detachment limited step kinetics. If the persistence analysis is carried out in terms of return to a fixed reference position, the measured persistence probability decays exponentially. Numerical studies of the Langevin equat…
Thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs) are the inequalities which give lower bounds on the entropy production rate using only the mean and the variance of fluctuating currents. Since the TURs do not refer to the full details of the stochastic dynamics, it would be promising to apply the TURs for estimating the entropy production rate from a limited set of trajectory data corresponding to the dynamics. Here we investigate a theoretical framework for estimation of the entropy production rate using the TURs along with machine learning techniques without prior knowledge of the parameters of th…
We recently showed that the dynamics of coarse-grained observables in systems out of thermal equilibrium are governed by the non-stationary generalized Langevin equation [J. Chem. Phys. 147, 214110 (2017), J. Chem. Phys. 150, 174118 (2019)]. The derivation we presented in these two articles was based on the assumption that the dynamics of the microscopic degrees of freedom was deterministic. Here we extend the discussion to stochastic microscopic dynamics. The fact that the non-stationary Generalized Langevin Equation also holds for stochastic processes implies that methods designed to estimat…
Active colloidal particles that are propelled by a self-diffusiophoretic mechanism are often described by Langevin equations that are either postulated on physical grounds or derived using the methods of fluctuating hydrodynamics. While these descriptions are appropriate for colloids of micrometric and larger size, they will break down for very small active particles. A fully microscopic derivation of Langevin equations for self-diffusiophoretic particles powered by chemical reactions catalyzed asymmetrically by the colloid is given in this paper. The derivation provides microscopic expression…
We study a relaxation behavior of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process with a time-dependent and fluctuating diffusivity. In this process, the dynamics of a position vector is modeled by the Langevin equation with a linear restoring force and a fluctuating diffusivity (FD). This process can be interpreted as a simple model of the relaxational dynamics with internal degrees of freedom or in a heterogeneous environment. By utilizing the functional integral expression and the transfer matrix method, we show that the relaxation function can be expressed in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions…
The generalized Langevin equation describes anomalous dynamics. Noise is not only the origin of uncertainty but also plays a positive role in helping to detect signal with information, termed stochastic resonance (SR). This paper analyzes the anomalous resonant behaviors of the generalized Langevin system with a multiplicative dichotomous noise and an internal tempered Mittag-Leffler noise. For the system with fluctuating harmonic potential, we obtain the exact expressions of several SR, such as, the first moment, the amplitude and the autocorrelation function for the output signal as well as …
We report a hybrid numerical method for the solution of the model H fluctuating hydrodynamic equations for binary mixtures. The momentum conservation equations with Landau-Lifshitz stresses are solved using the fluctuating lattice Boltzmann equation while the order parameter conservation equation with Langevin fluxes are solved using the stochastic method of lines. Two methods, based on finite difference and finite volume, are proposed for spatial discretisation of the order parameter equation. Special care is taken to ensure that the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is maintained at the lattic…
In molecular dynamics simulations and single molecule experiments, observables are usually measured along dynamic trajectories and then averaged over an ensemble ("bundle") of trajectories. Under stationary conditions, the time-evolution of such averages is described by the generalized Langevin equation. In contrast, if the dynamics is not stationary, it is not a priori clear which form the equation of motion for an averaged observable has. We employ the formalism of time-dependent projection operator techniques to derive the equation of motion for a non-equilibrium trajectory-averaged observa…
We construct Langevin equations describing the fluctuations of the tensor order parameter $Q_{αβ}$ in nematic liquid crystals by adding noise terms to time-dependent variational equations that follow from the Ginzburg-Landau-de Gennes free energy. The noise is required to preserve the symmetry and tracelessness of the tensor order parameter and must satisfy a fluctuation-dissipation relation at thermal equilibrium. We construct a noise with these properties in a basis of symmetric traceless matrices and show that the Langevin equations can be solved numerically in this basis using a stochastic…
We present an insightful ``derivation'' of the Langevin equation and the fluctuation dissipation theorem in the specific context of a heavier particle moving through an ideal gas of much lighter particles. The Newton's Law of motion ($m{\ddot x}=F$) for the heavy particle reduces to a Langevin equation (valid on a coarser time scale) with the assumption that the lighter gas particles follow a Boltzmann velocity distribution. Starting from the kinematics of the random collisions we show that (1) the average force $<F> \propto -{\dot x}$ and (2) the correlation function of the fluctuating force …
We present a numerical method to produce stochastic dynamics according to the generalized Langevin equation with a non-stationary memory kernel. This type of dynamics occurs when a microscopic system with an explicitly time-dependent Liouvillian is coarse-grained by means of a projection operator formalism. We show how to replace the deterministic fluctuating force in the generalized Langevin equation by a stochastic process, such that the distributions of the observables are reproduced up to moments of a given order. Thus, in combination with a method to extract the memory kernel from simulat…
The propulsion of active particles by self-diffusiophoresis is driven by asymmetric catalytic reactions on the particle surface that generate a mechanochemical coupling between the fluid velocity and the concentration fields of fuel and product in the surrounding solution. Because of thermal and molecular fluctuations in the solution, the motion of micrometric or submicrometric active particles is stochastic. Coupled Langevin equations describing the translation, rotation, and reaction of such active particles are deduced from fluctuating chemohydrodynamics and fluctuating boundary conditions …
Starting from a generalized elastic model which accounts for the stochastic motion of several physical systems such as membranes, (semi)flexible polymers and fluctuating interfaces among others, we derive the fractional Langevin equation (FLE) for a probe particle in such systems, in the case of thermal initial conditions. We show that this FLE is the only one fulfilling the fluctuation-dissipation (FD) relation within a new family of fractional Brownian motion (FBM) equations. The FLE for the time-dependent fluctuations of the donor-acceptor distance in a protein, is shown to be recovered. Wh…
We consider the motion of a Brownian particle moving in a potential field and driven by dichotomous noise with exponential correlation. Traditionally, the analytic as well as the numerical treatments of the problem, in general, rely on Fokker-Planck description. We present a method for direct numerical simulation of dichotomous noise to solve the Langevin equation. The method is applied to calculate nonequilibrium fluctuation induced current in a symmetric periodic potential using asymmetric dichotomous noise and compared to Fokker-Planck-Master equation based algorithm for a range of paramete…
This paper studies Langevin equation with random damping due to multiplicative noise and its solution. Two types of multiplicative noise, namely the dichotomous noise and fractional Gaussian noise are considered. Their solutions are obtained explicitly, with the expressions of the mean and covariance determined explicitly. Properties of the mean and covariance of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with random damping, in particular the asymptotic behavior, are studied. The effect of the multiplicative noise on the stability property of the resulting processes is investigated.
We propose a novel approach based on a Langevin equation for fluctuating motion of the center of mass of granular media fluidized by energy injection from a bottom plate. In this framework, the analytical solution of the Langevin equation is used to derive analytic expressions for several macroscopic quantities and the power spectrum for the center of mass. In order to test our theory, we performed event-driven molecular dynamics simulations for one- and two-dimensional systems. Energy is injected from a vibrating bottom plate in the one-dimensional case and from a thermal wall at the bottom i…
We study the transport properties of dilute electrolyte solutions on the basis of the fluctuating hydrodynamic equation, which is a set of nonlinear Langevin equations for the ion densities and flow velocity. The nonlinearity of the Langevin equations generally leads to effective kinetic coefficients for the deterministic dynamics of the average ion densities and flow velocity; the effective coefficients generally differ from the counterparts in the Langevin equations and are frequency-dependent. Using the path-integral formalism involving auxiliary fields, we perform systematic perturbation c…
Following on our previous work [S. Delong and B. E. Griffith and E. Vanden-Eijnden and A. Donev, Phys. Rev. E, 87(3):033302, 2013], we develop temporal integrators for solving Langevin stochastic differential equations that arise in fluctuating hydrodynamics. Our simple predictor-corrector schemes add fluctuations to standard second-order deterministic solvers in a way that maintains second-order weak accuracy for linearized fluctuating hydrodynamics. We construct a general class of schemes and recommend two specific schemes: an explicit midpoint method, and an implicit trapezoidal method. We …
The fluctuation-dissipation theorem, in the Kubo original formulation, is based on the decomposition of the thermal agitation forces into a dissipative contribution and a stochastically fluctuating term. This decomposition can be avoided by introducing a stochastic velocity field, with correlation properties deriving from linear response theory. Here, we adopt this field as the comprehensive hydrodynamic/fluctuational driver of the kinematic equations of motion. With this description, we show that the Langevin equations for a Brownian particle interacting with a solvent fluid become particular…
The dynamics of a single fluid bilayer membrane in an external hydrodynamic flow field is considered. The deterministic equation of motion for the configuration is derived taking into account both viscous dissipation in the surrounding liquid and local incompressibility of the membrane. For quasi-spherical vesicles in shear flow, thermal fluctuations can be incorporated in a Langevin-type equation of motion for the deformation amplitudes. The solution to this equation shows an overdamped oscillatory approach to a stationary tanktreading shape. Inclination angle and ellipiticity of the contour …
The Macroscopic Fluctuating Theory is presented from a practical and self consistent point of view. We take as starting point the assumption that a system at a mesoscopic scale is described by a field $ϕ(x,t)$ that evolves by a Langevin equation that locally either conserves or not the field. Its dynamic behavior may also depend on the action of external agents on the bulk or/and at the system's boundaries. We derive the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation and the probability of a path and we use them to study general properties of the system's stationary state. In particular we focus on the …
We consider stochastic energy balance and entropy production (EP) in a generalized Langevin dynamics of macrospins, allowing for both amplitude and direction fluctuations, under external magnetic field. EP is calculated using Fokker-Planck equation, distinguishing between reversible and irreversible parts of probability currents. The system entropy increases due to irreversible non-equilibrium processes, and reduces as heat dissipates to surrounding environment. Using path probability distributions of time-forward trajectories and conjugate trajectories under time reversal, we obtain fluctuati…
For thermally fluctuating 2-d systems, like solid surfaces, time and space correlation of the local surface height diverge logarithmically in the rough phase, whereas saturation is obtained below the roughening transition. A 2-d Langevin formalism, allowing to recover for long times and/or large distances these asymptotic behaviors, is presented. An overall expression for correlation functions that are related to atom hopping rates and surface stiffnesses is given. Considering anisotropic systems allows describing vicinal surfaces. At finite times, time correlations cross over to power laws al…
This work puts forward a generalization of the well-known rocking Markovian Brownian ratchets to the realm of antipersistent non-Markovian subdiffusion in viscoelastic media. A periodically forced subdiffusion in a parity-broken ratchet potential is considered within the non-Markovian generalized Langevin equation (GLE) description with a power-law memory kernel $η(t)\propto t^{-α}$ ($0<α<1$). It is shown that subdiffusive rectification currents, defined through the mean displacement and subvelocity $v_α$, $<δx(t)>\sim v_α t^α/ Γ(1+α)$, emerge asymptotically due to the breaking of the detailed…
We study stochastic dynamics of a point and extended inclusion within a one dimensional confined active viscoelastic gel. We show that the dynamics of a point inclusion can be described by a Langevin equation with a confining potential and multiplicative noise. Using a systematic adiabatic elimination over the fast variables, we arrive at an overdamped equation with a proper definition of the multiplicative noise. To highlight various features and to appeal to different biological contexts, we treat the inclusion in turn as a rigid extended element, an elastic element and a viscoelastic (Kelvi…
Brownian motion of single particles with various masses M and diameters D is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Besides the momentum auto-correlation function of the Brownian particle the memory function and the fluctuating force which enter the generalized Langevin equation of the Brownian particle are determined and their dependence on mass and diameter are investigated for two different fluid densities. Deviations of the fluctuating force distribution from a Gaussian form are observed for small particle diameters. For heavy particles the deviations of the fluctuating force from the …
We consider a stochastic version of the Wilson-Cowan model which accommodates for discrete populations of excitatory and inhibitory neurons. The model assumes a finite carrying capacity with the two populations being constant in size. The master equation that governs the dynamics of the stochastic model is analyzed by an expansion in powers of the inverse population size, yielding a coupled pair of non-linear Langevin equations with multiplicative noise. Gillespie simulations show the validity of the obtained approximation, for the parameter region where the system exhibits dynamical bistabili…
The stochastic motion of a two-dimensional vesicle in linear shear flow is studied at finite temperature. In the limit of small deformations from a circle, Langevin-type equations of motion are derived, which are highly nonlinear due to the constraint of constant perimeter length. These equations are solved in the low temperature limit and using a mean field approach, in which the length constraint is satisfied only on average. The constraint imposes non-trivial correlations between the lowest deformation modes at low temperature. We also simulate a vesicle in a hydrodynamic solvent by using t…
We propose a mathematical model to describe the athermal fluctuations of thin sheets driven by the type of random driving that might be experienced prior to weak crumpling. The model is obtained by merging the Föppl-von Kármán equations from elasticity theory with techniques from out-of-equilibrium statistical physics to obtain a nonlinear strongly coupled $ϕ^{4}$-Langevin field equation with spatially varying kernel. With the aid of the self-consistent expansion (SCE), this equation is analytically solved for the structure factor of a fluctuating sheet. In contrast to previous research which …
We derive generalized Langevin equations for the translational and rotational motion of a heated Brownian particle from the fluctuating hydrodynamics of its non-isothermal solvent. The temperature gradient around the particle couples to the hydrodynamic modes excited by the particle itself so that the resulting noise spectrum is governed by a frequency-dependent temperature. We show how the effective temperatures at which the article coordinates and (angular) velocities appear to be thermalized emerge from this central quantity.
Numerical and analytic results for the exponent θdescribing the decay of the first return probability of an interface to its initial height are obtained for a large class of linear Langevin equations. The models are parametrized by the dynamic roughness exponent β, with 0 < β< 1; for β= 1/2 the time evolution is Markovian. Using simulations of solid-on-solid models, of the discretized continuum equations as well as of the associated zero-dimensional stationary Gaussian process, we address two problems: The return of an initially flat interface, and the return to an initial state with fully dev…
