We investigate the ensemble and time averaged mean squared displacements for particle diffusion in a simple model for disordered media by assuming that the local diffusivity is both fluctuating in time and has a deterministic average growth or decay in time. In this study we compare computer simulations of the stochastic Langevin equation for this random diffusion process with analytical results. We explore the regimes of normal Brownian motion as well as anomalous diffusion in the sub- and superdiffusive regimes. We also consider effects of the inertial term on the particle motion. The investigation of the resulting diffusion is performed for unconfined and confined motion.
A generalized Langevin equation with fluctuating diffusivity (GLEFD) is proposed, and it is shown that the GLEFD satisfies a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation. If the memory kernel is a power law, the GLEFD exhibits anomalous subdiffusion, non-Gaussianity, and stretched-exponential relaxation. The case in which the memory kernel is given by a single exponential function is also investigated as an analytically tractable example. In particular, the mean-square displacement and the self-intermediate-scattering function of this system show plateau structures. A numerical scheme to integ…
Recently, anomalous subdiffusion, aging, and scatter of the diffusion coefficient have been reported in many single-particle-tracking experiments, though origins of these behaviors are still elusive. Here, as a model to describe such phenomena, we investigate a Langevin equation with diffusivity fluctuating between a fast and a slow state. We assume that the sojourn time distributions of these two states are given by power laws. It is shown that, for a non-equilibrium ensemble, the ensemble-averaged mean square displacement (MSD) shows transient subdiffusion. In contrast, the time-averaged MSD…
We investigate Brownian motion with diffusivity alternately fluctuating between fast and slow states. We assume that sojourn-time distributions of these two states are given by exponential or power-law distributions. We develop a theory of alternating renewal processes to study a relaxation function which is expressed with an integral of the diffusivity over time. This relaxation function can be related to a position correlation function if the particle is in a harmonic potential, and to the self-intermediate scattering function if the potential force is absent. It is theoretically shown that,…
A formal analogy of fluctuating diffusivity to thermodynamics is discussed for messenger RNA molecules fluorescently fused to a protein in living cells. Regarding the average value of the fluctuating diffusivity of such RNA-protein particles as the analog of the internal energy, the analogs of the quantity of heat and work are identified. The Clausius-like inequality is shown to hold for the entropy associated with diffusivity fluctuations, which plays a role analogous to the thermodynamic entropy, and the analog of the quantity of heat. The change of the statistical fluctuation distribution i…
We consider Langevin equation with dichotomously fluctuating diffusivity, where the diffusion coefficient changes dichotomously in time, in order to study fluctuations of time-averaged observables in temporary heterogeneous diffusion process. We find that occupation time statistics is a powerful tool for calculating the time-averaged mean square displacement in the model. We show that the time-averaged diffusion coefficients are intrinsically random when the mean sojourn time for one of the states diverges. Our model provides anomalous fluctuations of time-averaged diffusivity, which have rele…
The mean-square displacement (MSD) is widely utilized to study the dynamical properties of stochastic processes. The time-averaged MSD (TAMSD) provides some information on the dynamics which cannot be extracted from the ensemble-averaged MSD. In particular, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the TAMSD can be utilized to study the long time relaxation behavior. In this work, we consider a class of Langevin equations which are multiplicatively coupled to time-dependent and fluctuating diffusivities. Various interesting dynamics models such as entangled polymers and supercooled liquids can …
There have been increasing reports that the diffusion coefficient of macromolecules depends on time and fluctuates randomly. Here, a novel method to elucidate the fluctuating diffusivity from trajectory data is developed. The time-averaged mean square displacement (MSD), a common tool in single-particle-tracking (SPT) experiments, is generalized into a second order tensor, with which information on both magnitude fluctuations and orientational fluctuations of the diffusivity can be clearly detected. This new method is utilized to analyze the center-of-mass motion of four polymer models, the Ro…
We study a relaxation behavior of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process with a time-dependent and fluctuating diffusivity. In this process, the dynamics of a position vector is modeled by the Langevin equation with a linear restoring force and a fluctuating diffusivity (FD). This process can be interpreted as a simple model of the relaxational dynamics with internal degrees of freedom or in a heterogeneous environment. By utilizing the functional integral expression and the transfer matrix method, we show that the relaxation function can be expressed in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions…
Dynamical random walk of classical particle in thermodynamically equilibrium fluctuating medium, - Gaussian random potential field, - is considered in the framework of explicit stochastic representation of deterministic interactions. We discuss corresponding formally exact Langevin equations for the particle's trajectory and show that Marcovian kinetic equation approximation to them is inadequate, - even (and especially) in case of spatially-temporally short-correlated field, - since ignores such actual effects of exponential instability of the trajectory (in respect to small perturbations) as…
We demonstrate that the Einstein relation for the diffusion of a particle in the random energy landscape with the Gaussian density of states is an exclusive 1D property and does not hold in higher dimensions. We also consider the analytical properties of the particle velocity and diffusivity for the limit of weak driving force and establish connection between these properties and dimensionality and spatial correlation of the random energy landscape.

Molecular dynamics simulations and instantaneous normal mode (INM) analysis of a fluid with core-softened pair interactions and water-like liquid-state anomalies are performed to obtain an understanding of the relationship between thermodynamics, transport properties and the poten- tial energy landscape. Rosenfeld-scaling of diffusivities with the thermodynamic excess and pair correlation entropy is demonstrated for this model. The INM spectra are shown to carry infor- mation about the dynamical consequences of the interplay between length scales characteristic of anomalous fluids, such as bim…
In heterogeneous environments, the diffusivity is not constant but changes with time. It is important to detect changes in the diffusivity from single-particle-tracking trajectories in experiments. Here, we devise a novel method for detecting the transition times of the diffusivity from trajectory data. A key idea of this method is the introduction of a characteristic time scale of the diffusive states, which is obtained by a fluctuation analysis of the time-averaged mean square displacements. We test our method in silico by using the Langevin equation with a fluctuating diffusivity. We show t…
The recently developed formalism of nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics (NLFH) has been instrumental in unraveling many new dynamical universality classes in coupled driven systems with multiple conserved quantities. In principle, this formalism requires knowledge of the exact expression of locally conserved current in terms of local density of the conserved components. However, for most nonequilibrium systems an exact expression is not available and it is important to know what happens to the predictions of NLFH in these cases. We address this question for the first time here in a system with…
A considerable number of systems have recently been reported in which Brownian yet non-Gaussian dynamics was observed. These are processes characterised by a linear growth in time of the mean squared displacement, yet the probability density function of the particle displacement is distinctly non-Gaussian, and often of exponential (Laplace) shape. This apparently ubiquitous behaviour observed in very different physical systems has been interpreted as resulting from diffusion in inhomogeneous environments and mathematically represented through a variable, stochastic diffusion coefficient. Indee…

We study the clustering properties of particles sliding downwards on a fluctuating surface evolving through the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, a problem equivalent to passive scalars driven by a Burgers fluid. Monte Carlo simulations on a discrete version of the problem in one dimension reveal that particles cluster very strongly: the two point density correlation function scales with the system size with a scaling function which diverges at small argument. Analytic results are obtained for the Sinai problem of random walkers in a quenched random landscape. This equilibrium system too has a sin…
A growing number of biological, soft, and active matter systems are observed to exhibit normal diffusive dynamics with a linear growth of the mean squared displacement, yet with a non-Gaussian distribution of increments. Based on the Chubinsky-Slater idea of a diffusing diffusivity we here establish and analyze a minimal model framework of diffusion processes with fluctuating diffusivity. In particular, we demonstrate the equivalence of the diffusing diffusivity process with a superstatistical approach with a distribution of diffusivities, at times shorter than the diffusivity correlation time…
We study the clustering properties of advected, non-interacting,passive scalar particles in a Burgers fluid with noise, a problem which maps to that of passive sliding particles moving under gravity on a surface evolving through the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. Numerical simulations show that both the density-density correlation function and the single-site mass distribution scale with system size. The scaling functions diverge at small argument, indicating strong clustering of particles. We analytically evaluate the scaling functions for the two-point correlation and mass distribution of non…
We study phase separation in a system of hard-core particles driven by a fluctuating two-dimensional self-affine potential landscape which evolves through Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) dynamics. We find that particles tend to cluster together on a length scale which grows in time. The final phase-separated steady state is characterized by an unusual cusp singularity in the scaled correlation function and a broad distribution for the order parameter. Unlike the one-dimensional case studied earlier, the cluster-size distribution is asymmetric between particles and holes, reflecting the broken reflec…
We demonstrate particle clustering on macroscopic scales in a coupled nonequilibrium system where two species of particles are advected by a fluctuating landscape and modify the landscape in the process. The phase diagram generated by varying the particle-landscape coupling, valid for all particle density and in both one and two dimensions, shows novel nonequilibrium phases. While particle species are completely phase separated, the landscape develops macroscopically ordered regions coexisting with a disordered region, resulting in coarsening and steady state dynamics on time scales which grow…
Bias plays an important role in the enhancement of diffusion in periodic potentials. Using the continuous-time random walk in the presence of a bias, we provide a novel mechanism for the enhancement of diffusion in a random energy landscape. When the variance of the waiting time diverges, in contrast to the bias-free case the dynamics with bias becomes superdiffusive. In the superdiffusive regime, we find a distinct initial ensemble dependence of the diffusivity. We show that the time-averaged variance converges to the corresponding ensemble-averaged variance, i.e., ergodicity is preserved. Ho…
The active Brownian particle (ABP) model describes a swimmer, synthetic or living, whose direction of swimming is a Brownian motion. The swimming is due to a propulsion force, and the fluctuations are typically thermal in origin. We present a 2D model where the fluctuations arise from nonthermal noise in a propelling force acting at a single point, such as that due to a flagellum. We take the overdamped limit and find several modifications to the traditional ABP model. Since the fluctuating force causes a fluctuating torque, the diffusion tensor describing the process has a coupling between tr…
We study a coupled driven system in which two species of particles are advected by a fluctuating potential energy landscape. While the particles follow the potential gradient, each species affects the local shape of the landscape in different ways. As a result of this two-way coupling between the landscape and the particles, the system shows interesting new phases, characterized by different sorts of long ranged order in the particles and in the landscape. In all these ordered phases the two particle species phase separate completely from each other, but the underlying landscape may either sho…
The "double diffusivity" model was proposed in the late 1970s, and reworked in the early 1980s, as a continuum counterpart to existing discrete models of diffusion corresponding to high diffusivity paths, such as grain boundaries and dislocation lines. Technically, the model pans out as a system of coupled {\it Fick type} diffusion equations to represent "regular" and "high" diffusivity paths with "source terms" accounting for the mass exchange between the two paths. The model remit was extended by analogy to describe flow in porous media with double porosity, as well as to model heat conducti…
We use fluctuating hydrodynamics to analyze the dynamical properties in the non-equilibrium steady state of a diffusive system coupled with reservoirs. We derive the two-time correlations of the density and of the current in the hydrodynamic limit in terms of the diffusivity and the mobility. Within this hydrodynamic framework we discuss a generalization of the fluctuation dissipation relation in a non-equilibrium steady state where the response function is expressed in terms of the two-time correlations. We compare our results to an exact solution of the symmetric exclusion process. This exac…
We study the asymptotic scaling properties of a massively parallel algorithm for discrete-event simulations where the discrete events are Poisson arrivals. The evolution of the simulated time horizon is analogous to a non-equilibrium surface. Monte Carlo simulations and a coarse-grained approximation indicate that the macroscopic landscape in the steady state is governed by the Edwards-Wilkinson Hamiltonian. Since the efficiency of the algorithm corresponds to the density of local minima in the associated surface, our results imply that the algorithm is asymptotically scalable.
Spontaneous persistent motions driven by active processes play a central role to maintain the living cells far from equilibrium. In the majority of the research works, the steady state dynamics of an active system has been described in terms of an effective temperature. In the majority of the research works, the steady state dynamics of an active system has been described in terms of an effective temperature. By contrast, we have examined a prototype model for diffusion in an activity-induced rugged energy landscape to describe the slow dynamics of a tagged particle in a dense active environme…
Non-Gaussian diffusion is commonly considered as a result of fluctuating diffusivity, which is correlated in time or in space or both. In this work, we investigate the non-Gaussian diffusion in static disordered media via a quenched trap model, where the diffusivity is spatially correlated. Several unique effects due to quenched disorder are reported. We analytically estimate the diffusion coefficient $D_{\text{dis}}$ and its fluctuation over samples of finite size. We show a mechanism of population splitting in the non-Gaussian diffusion. It results in a sharp peak in the distribution of disp…
The time evolution of random variables with Lévy statistics has the ability to develop jumps, displaying very different behaviors from continuously fluctuating cases. Such patterns appear in an ever broadening range of examples including random lasers, non-Gaussian kinetics or foraging strategies. The penalizing or reinforcing effect of the environment, however, has been little explored so far. We report a new phenomenon which manifests as a qualitative transition in the spatial decay behavior of the stationary measure of a jump process under an external potential, occurring on a combined chan…
We study the dynamics of a tracer in a dense mixture of particles connected to different thermostats. Starting from the overdamped Langevin equations that describe the evolution of the system, we derive the expression of the self-diffusion coefficient of a tagged particle in the suspension, in the limit of soft interactions between the particles. Our derivation, which relies on the linearization of the Dean-Kawasaki equations obeyed by the density fields and on a path-integral representation of the dynamics of the tracer, extends previous derivations that held for tracers in contact with a sin…
We investigate a population-genetic model with a temporally-fluctuating sawtooth fitness landscape. We numerically show that a counter-intuitive behavior occurs where the rate of evolution of the system decreases as selection pressure increases from zero. This phenomenon is understood by analogy with absolute negative mobility in particle flow. A phenomenological explanation about the direction of evolution is also provided.
We discuss the situations under which Brownian yet non-Gaussian (BnG) diffusion can be observed in the model of a particle's motion in a random landscape of diffusion coefficients slowly varying in space. Our conclusion is that such behavior is extremely unlikely in the situations when the particles, introduced into the system at random at $t=0$, are observed from the preparation of the system on. However, it indeed may arise in the case when the diffusion (as described in Ito interpretation) is observed under equilibrated conditions. This paradigmatic situation can be translated into the mode…
We present a position Langevin equation for overdamped particle motion on rough two-dimensional surfaces. A Brownian Dynamics algorithm is suggested to evolve this equation numerically, allowing for the prediction of effective (projected) diffusion coefficients over corrugated surfaces. In the case of static surface roughness, we find that a simple area-scaling prediction for the projected diffusion coefficient leads to seemingly quantitative agreement with numerical results. To study the effect of dynamic surface evolution on the diffusive process, we consider particle diffusion over a therma…
We introduce a general class of stochastic lattice gas models, and derive their fluctuating hydrodynamics description in the large size limit under a local equilibrium hypothesis. The model consists in energetic particles on a lattice subject to exclusion interactions, which move and collide stochastically with energy-dependent rates. The resulting fluctuating hydrodynamics equations exhibit nonlinear coupled particle and energy transport, including particle currents due to temperature gradients (Soret effect) and energy flow due to concentration gradients (Dufour effect). The microscopic dyna…
Brownian particles suspended in disordered crowded environments often exhibit non-Gaussian normal diffusion (NGND), whereby their displacements grow with mean square proportional to the observation time and non-Gaussian statistics. Their distributions appear to decay almost exponentially according to "universal" laws largely insensitive to the observation time. This effect is generically attributed to slow environmental fluctuations, which perturb the local configuration of the suspension medium. To investigate the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the NGND phenomenon, we study Brownian d…
We study the clustering of passive, non-interacting particles moving under the influence of a fluctuating field and random noise, in one dimension. The fluctuating field in our case is provided by a surface governed by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and the sliding particles follow the local surface slope. As the KPZ equation can be mapped to the noisy Burgers equation, the problem translates to that of passive scalars in a Burgers fluid. We study the case of particles moving in the same direction as the surface, equivalent to advection in fluid language. Monte-Carlo simulations on a d…
