The effect of interfaces and confinement in polymer ferroelectric structured is discussed. Results on confinement under different geometries are presented and the comparison of all of them allows to evidence that the presence of an interface in particular cases stabilizes a ferroelectric phase that is not spontaneously formed under normal bulk processing conditions
Four modifications of the corona triode are described for charging polar polymers with ferroelectric or non-linear optical properties. Advantages of the constant current modification of corona poling are illustrated and discussed.
Experimental results are presented on anomalous behavior of absorption currents in PVDF during the stepwise increase of the voltage applied through a corona. These results, supplemented with the dynamics of the time constant of the electret potential decay are consistent with a hypothesis assuming deep trapping of the charge carriers during the polarization buildup in ferroelectric polymers. Model calculations are made on distribution of the potential energy at the surface of the polarized crystallites proving that additional sites for the charge trapping are created there.
Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FE-FETs) consisting of tunable dielectric layers are utilized to investigate interfacial transport processes. Large changes in the dielectric constant as a function of temperature are observed in FE-FETs in conjunction with the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition. The devices offer a test bed to evaluate specific effects of polarization on the electrical processes. FE-FETs have dominant contributions from polarization-fluctuation rather than static dipolar disorder prevalent in high k paraelectric dielectric-based FETs. Additionally, photo-excitatio…
A ferroelectric field effect in the bulk heterojunction was found when an external electric field (EEF) was applied on the active layer of polymer solar cells (PSCs) during the annealing process of the active layer spin-coated with poly (3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM). For one direction field, the short circuit current density of PSCs was improved from 7.2 to 8.0 mA/cm2, the power conversion efficiency increased from 2.4 to 2.8%, and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency increased from 42 to 49% corresponding to the different EEF magnitu…
We report on the fabrication and electrical characterization of few-layer graphene (FLG) devices coated with a ferroelectric polymer layer of poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF/TrFE)]. Highly stable and reliable resistance changes were observed under floating conditions, which were dependent on the back gate voltage applied beforehand. Nonvolatile memory functionality in the hybrid FLG-P(VDF/TrFE) devices is attributed to a remanent electric field induced by the ferroelectric polarization of the P(VDF/TrFE) layer.
Phase field modeling of domain structures in ferroelectrics nanorods of different shape and sizes is presented. The vortex domain configurations in confined ferroelectrics have been explored by varying the ratio of the energies of electrostatic and elastic interactions. It is shown that a strong effect of the electrostatic interactions can cause the formation of 90o domain walls that do not satisfy the condition of strain compatibility. A good agreement between the results of phase field modeling and the results of atomistic calculations for nano ferroelectrics demonstrates that the phase fiel…
The behavior of ferroelectricity at the nanoscale is the focus of increasing research activity because of intense interest in the fundamental nature of spontaneous order in condensed-matter systems and because of the many practical applications of ferroelectric thin films to, for example, electromechanical transducers, infrared imaging sensors, and nonvolatile random-access memories. Ferroelectricity, in analogy with its namesake ferromagnetism, is the property of some crystalline systems to maintain a permanent, but reversible, electrical polarization in the absence of an external electric fi…
We report piezo-response force microscopy studies of the static and dynamic properties of domain walls (DWs) in 11 to 36 nm thick films of crystalline ferroelectric poly(vinylidene-fluoride-trifluorethylene). The DW roughness exponent ζ ranges from 0.39 to 0.48 and the DW creep exponent μ varies from 0.20 to 0.28, revealing an unexpected effective dimensionality of ~1.5 that is independent of film thickness. Our results suggest predominantly 2D ferroelectricity in the layered polymer and we attribute the fractal dimensionality to DW deroughening due to the correlations between the in-plane and…

The possibility of controlling the domain structure in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial and multiaxial ferroelectrics using a shell with tunable dielectric properties is studied in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. Finite element modeling and analytical calculations are performed for Sn2P2S6 and BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered with high-k polymer, temperature dependent isotropic paraelectric strontium titanate, or anisotropic liquid crystal shells with a strongly temperature dependent dielectric permittivity tensor. It appeared that the tunable paraelectric shell with a tempe…
Herein, we elucidate the impact of tubular confinement on the structure and relaxation behaviour of poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) and how these affect the para-/ferroelectric behavior of this polymer. We use PVDF nanotubes that were solidified in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements evidence a bimodal relaxation process for PVDF nanotubes: besides the bulk-like -relaxation, we detect a notably slower relaxation that is associated with the PVDF regions of restricted dynamics at the interface with the AAO pore. Strickingly, both the bulk-like and the i…
Polymer-piezoceramic 0-3 composites combine the flexibility of the polymers and the excellent piezoelectric properties of the ferroelectric based ceramic. While grain size of the ceramic powder is one of the important considerations in the fabrication of such composites, a correlation relating poling field induced structural changes and its possible influence on the overall piezoelectric response of the composite is still lacking. In this paper, we examine this issue on a 0-3 piezo-composite comprising of a ceramic powders of a low-lead piezoelectric alloy (x)Bi(Ni1/2Zr1/2O3-(1-x)PbTiO3 in pro…
We present experimental evidence for hexagonal domain faceting in the ferroelectric polymer PVDF-TrFE films having the lower orthorhombic crystallographic symmetry. This effect can arise from purely electrostatic depolarizing forces. We show that in contrast to magnetic bubble shape domains where such type of deformation instability has a predominantly elliptical character, the emergence of more symmetrical circular harmonics is favored in ferroelectrics with high dielectric constant.
We show that the electric polarization at the interface with ultrathin superconducting (S) films sandwiched between ferroelectric (FE) layers allows achievement of substantially stronger modulation of inner carrier density and superconducting transition temperature as compared to FE-S bilayers typically used in superconducting FETs. We find that not only the larger penetration depths but also the pairing symmetry should be responsible for the fact that the electric field effect in high temperature superconductors is much stronger than in conventional systems. Discussing the advantages of multi…
Employing Molecular Dynamics simulations of a chemically realistic model of 1,4-polybutadiene between graphite walls we show that the mass exchange between layers close to the walls is a slow process already in the melt state. For the glass transition of confined polymers this process competes with the slowing down due to packing effects and intramolecular rotation barriers.
Graphene has exceptional optical, mechanical and electrical properties, making it an emerging material for novel optoelectronics, photonics and for flexible transparent electrode applications. However, the relatively high sheet resistance of graphene is a major constrain for many of these applications. Here we propose a new approach to achieve low sheet resistance in large-scale CVD monolayer graphene using non-volatile ferroelectric polymer gating. In this hybrid structure, large-scale graphene is heavily doped up to 3{\times}1013 cm-2 by non-volatile ferroelectric dipoles, yielding a low she…
Ferroelectric materials can switch their polarization in response to an applied electric field. In this work, ferroelectricity at the single molecule level is proposed and investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Several bowl-shaped molecules, both synthetically reported and hypothetically proposed, are shown to invert polarization in response to external applied electric fields. Such a polarization inversion relies on the conformational change of a single molecule, unlike its traditional counterparts of which ferroelectricity originates from the switch of an asymmetric…
Topological spin and polar textures have fascinated people in different areas of physics and technologies. However, the observations are limited in magnetic and solid-state ferroelectric systems. Ferroelectric nematic is the first liquid-state ferroelectric that would carry many possibilities of spatially distributed polarization fields. Contrary to traditional magnetic or crystalline systems, anisotropic liquid crystal interactions can compete with the polarization counterparts, thereby setting a challenge in understating their interplays and the resultant topologies. Here, we discover chiral…
Because final properties of nanoscale polymeric structures are largely determined by the solid-state microstructure of the confined polymer, it is imperative not only to understand how the microstructure of polymers develops under nanoscale confinement but also to establish means to manipulate it. Here we present a series of processing strategies, adapted from methods used in bulk polymer processing, that allow to control the solidification of polymer nanostructures. Firstly, we show that supramolecular nucleating agents can be readily used to modify the crystallization kinetics of confined po…
The discovery and precise manipulation of atomic-size conductive ferroelectric domain defects, such as geometrically confined walls, offer new opportunities for a wide range of prospective electronic devices, and the so-called walltronics is emerging consequently. Here we demonstrate the highly stable and fatigue-resistant nonvolatile ferroelectric memory device based on deterministic creation and erasure of conductive domain wall geometrically confined inside a topological domain structure. By introducing a pair of delicately designed co-axial electrodes onto the epitaxial BiFeO3 film, one ca…
The present work refers to a simulation study on nanoconfined polymers in polymer-MoS 2 nanocomposites as a function of MoS 2 -MoS 2 interlayer separation. We indeed apply reverse nonequlibrium molecular dynamics simulations (RNEMD) to investigate thermal conductivity of polyamide oligomers which is confined by MoS 2 bilayers. The polymer thermal conductivity can be considerably enhanced when polymer chains are confined by MoS 2 sheets, in particular such behavior is more obvious for charged surfaces. The presence of the MoS 2 surfaces leads to well- ordering of polymer chains as well as dense…
The orientational and translational order of a thermotropic ferroelectric liquid crystal (2MBOCBC) imbibed in self-organized, parallel, cylindrical pores with radii of 10, 15, or 20 nm in anodic aluminium oxide monoliths (AAO) are explored by high-resolution linear and circular optical birefringence as well as neutron diffraction texture analysis. The results are compared to experiments on the bulk system. The native oxidic pore walls do not provide a stable smectogen wall anchoring. By contrast, a polymeric wall grafting enforcing planar molecular anchoring results in a thermal-history indepe…
Monte Carlo simulations of the Asakura-Oosawa (AO) model for colloid-polymer mixtures confined between two parallel repulsive structureless walls are presented and analyzed in the light of current theories on capillary condensation and interface localization transitions. Choosing a polymer to colloid size ratio of q=0.8 and studying ultrathin films in the range of D=3 to D=10 colloid diameters thickness, grand canonical Monte Carlo methods are used; phase transitions are analyzed via finite size scaling, as in previous work on bulk systems and under confinement between identical types of walls…
Despite their considerable practical and biological applications, the link between molecular properties, assembly conditions and self-organized structure in confined polymer solutions remains elusive. Here, we explore the lyotropic nematic ordering of semi-flexible chains in spherical confinement for multiple contour lengths across a wide regime of concentrations. We uncover an original crossover from two distinct quadrupolar states, both characterized by regular tetrahedral patterns of surface topological defects, to either longitudinal, latitudinal or spontaneously-twisted bipolar structures…

We propose a concept for superconducting electric field-effect devices based on superconducting films sandwiched between ferroelectric layers. We provide theoretical calculations that indicate how the field effect in these devices could be amplified, which can be experimentally probed even at the current stage of film fabrication techniques.
We investigate the pseudo-Casimir force acting between two charged surfaces confining a single polyelectrolyte chain with opposite charge. We expand the exact free energy to the second order in the local electrostatic field as well as the replicated polymer density field around the mean-field (saddle-point) solution. The quadratic terms lead to a fluctuation interaction that is partly due to the (thermal) Casimir effect for the confined electrostatic field and partly due to the pseudo-Casimir effect due to the confined replicated polymer density field. We study the intersurface separation depe…
Online training of deep neural networks (DNN) can be significantly accelerated by performing in-situ vector matrix multiplication in a crossbar array of analog memories. However, training accuracies often suffer due to device non-idealities such as nonlinearity, asymmetry, limited bit precision and dynamic weight update range within constrained power budget. Here, we report a three-terminal Ferroelectric-Field-Effect-Transistor based on low thermal budget processes that can work efficiently as an analog synaptic transistor. Ferroelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE) as the gate insulator and 2D semicon…
Confined geometries offer useful and experimentally amenable mechanical testing arrangements in which to study the molecular and micro-structural processes which govern plastic yield in stress environments dominated by hydrostatic pressure over shear. However, the changes to macroscopic stress strain behaviour that result from switching from an unconfined mode such as uniaxial compression to a confined one are often overlooked and display a surprising level of complexity, even for simple elastic plastic constitutive models. Here we report a confinement induced strain hardening effect in polyst…
