Experimental results are presented on anomalous behavior of absorption currents in PVDF during the stepwise increase of the voltage applied through a corona. These results, supplemented with the dynamics of the time constant of the electret potential decay are consistent with a hypothesis assuming deep trapping of the charge carriers during the polarization buildup in ferroelectric polymers. Model calculations are made on distribution of the potential energy at the surface of the polarized crystallites proving that additional sites for the charge trapping are created there.
Four modifications of the corona triode are described for charging polar polymers with ferroelectric or non-linear optical properties. Advantages of the constant current modification of corona poling are illustrated and discussed.
The effect of interfaces and confinement in polymer ferroelectric structured is discussed. Results on confinement under different geometries are presented and the comparison of all of them allows to evidence that the presence of an interface in particular cases stabilizes a ferroelectric phase that is not spontaneously formed under normal bulk processing conditions
First-principles calculations for pristine neutral ferroelectric domain walls in BiFeO$_3$ reveal that excess electrons are selectively trapped by the domain walls, while holes are only weakly attracted. Such trapped excess electrons may be responsible for the thermally activated electrical conductivity at domain walls observed in experiments. In the case of a periodic array of domain walls, the trapped excess electrons create a zigzag potential, whose amplitude depends on the electron concentration in the material and the domain-wall distance. The potential is asymmetric for 71° and 109° doma…
Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FE-FETs) consisting of tunable dielectric layers are utilized to investigate interfacial transport processes. Large changes in the dielectric constant as a function of temperature are observed in FE-FETs in conjunction with the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition. The devices offer a test bed to evaluate specific effects of polarization on the electrical processes. FE-FETs have dominant contributions from polarization-fluctuation rather than static dipolar disorder prevalent in high k paraelectric dielectric-based FETs. Additionally, photo-excitatio…
The interface between graphene and the ferroelectric superlattice $\mathrm{PbTiO_3/SrTiO_3}$ (PTO/STO) is studied. Tuning the transition temperature through the PTO/STO volume fraction minimizes the adsorbates at the graphene-ferroelectric interface, allowing robust ferroelectric hysteresis to be demonstrated. Intrinsic charge traps from the ferroelectric surface defects can adversely affect the graphene channel hysteresis, and can be controlled by careful sample processing, enabling systematic study of the charge trapping mechanism.
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and scanning probe potentiometry were used to investigate charge trapping in polymer field-effect transistors fabricated on a silicon gate. The hole density in the transistor channel was determined from the reduction in the transmitted terahertz radiation under an applied gate voltage. Prolonged device operation creates an exponential decay in the differential terahertz transmission, compatible with an increase in the density of trapped holes in the polymer channel. Taken in combination with scanning probe potentionmetry measurements, these results indicate t…
A ferroelectric field effect in the bulk heterojunction was found when an external electric field (EEF) was applied on the active layer of polymer solar cells (PSCs) during the annealing process of the active layer spin-coated with poly (3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM). For one direction field, the short circuit current density of PSCs was improved from 7.2 to 8.0 mA/cm2, the power conversion efficiency increased from 2.4 to 2.8%, and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency increased from 42 to 49% corresponding to the different EEF magnitu…
A measurement technique is presented to quantify the polarization loss in ferroelectric thin films as a function of delay time during the first 100s after switching. This technique can be used to investigate charge trapping in ferroelectric thin films by analyzing the magnitude and rate of polarization loss. Exemplary measurements have been performed on Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) and HZO/Al2O3 films, as a function of pulse width and temperature. It is found that the competing effects of the depolarization field, internal bias field and charge trapping lead to a characteristic Gaussian dependence of th…

We report on the fabrication and electrical characterization of few-layer graphene (FLG) devices coated with a ferroelectric polymer layer of poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF/TrFE)]. Highly stable and reliable resistance changes were observed under floating conditions, which were dependent on the back gate voltage applied beforehand. Nonvolatile memory functionality in the hybrid FLG-P(VDF/TrFE) devices is attributed to a remanent electric field induced by the ferroelectric polarization of the P(VDF/TrFE) layer.
The behavior of ferroelectricity at the nanoscale is the focus of increasing research activity because of intense interest in the fundamental nature of spontaneous order in condensed-matter systems and because of the many practical applications of ferroelectric thin films to, for example, electromechanical transducers, infrared imaging sensors, and nonvolatile random-access memories. Ferroelectricity, in analogy with its namesake ferromagnetism, is the property of some crystalline systems to maintain a permanent, but reversible, electrical polarization in the absence of an external electric fi…
We report piezo-response force microscopy studies of the static and dynamic properties of domain walls (DWs) in 11 to 36 nm thick films of crystalline ferroelectric poly(vinylidene-fluoride-trifluorethylene). The DW roughness exponent ζ ranges from 0.39 to 0.48 and the DW creep exponent μ varies from 0.20 to 0.28, revealing an unexpected effective dimensionality of ~1.5 that is independent of film thickness. Our results suggest predominantly 2D ferroelectricity in the layered polymer and we attribute the fractal dimensionality to DW deroughening due to the correlations between the in-plane and…

The possibility of controlling the domain structure in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial and multiaxial ferroelectrics using a shell with tunable dielectric properties is studied in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. Finite element modeling and analytical calculations are performed for Sn2P2S6 and BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered with high-k polymer, temperature dependent isotropic paraelectric strontium titanate, or anisotropic liquid crystal shells with a strongly temperature dependent dielectric permittivity tensor. It appeared that the tunable paraelectric shell with a tempe…
Doped organic semiconductors are critical to emerging device applications, including thermoelectrics, bioelectronics, and neuromorphic computing devices. It is commonly assumed that low conductivities in these materials result primarily from charge trapping by the Coulomb potentials of the dopant counter-ions. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study rebutting this belief. Using a newly developed doping technique, we find the conductivity of several classes of high-mobility conjugated polymers to be strongly correlated with paracrystalline disorder but poorly correlated w…
Polymer-piezoceramic 0-3 composites combine the flexibility of the polymers and the excellent piezoelectric properties of the ferroelectric based ceramic. While grain size of the ceramic powder is one of the important considerations in the fabrication of such composites, a correlation relating poling field induced structural changes and its possible influence on the overall piezoelectric response of the composite is still lacking. In this paper, we examine this issue on a 0-3 piezo-composite comprising of a ceramic powders of a low-lead piezoelectric alloy (x)Bi(Ni1/2Zr1/2O3-(1-x)PbTiO3 in pro…
We present experimental evidence for hexagonal domain faceting in the ferroelectric polymer PVDF-TrFE films having the lower orthorhombic crystallographic symmetry. This effect can arise from purely electrostatic depolarizing forces. We show that in contrast to magnetic bubble shape domains where such type of deformation instability has a predominantly elliptical character, the emergence of more symmetrical circular harmonics is favored in ferroelectrics with high dielectric constant.
A model for Metal-Ferroelectric-Metal structures with Schottky contacts is proposed. The model adapts the general theories of metal-semiconductor rectifying contacts for the particular case of metal-ferroelectric contact by introducing: the ferroelectric polarization as a sheet of surface charge located at a finite distance from the electrode interface; a deep trapping level of high concentration; the static and dynamic values of the dielectric constant. Consequences of the proposed model on relevant quantities of the Schottky contact such as built-in voltage, charge density and depletion widt…
Graphene has exceptional optical, mechanical and electrical properties, making it an emerging material for novel optoelectronics, photonics and for flexible transparent electrode applications. However, the relatively high sheet resistance of graphene is a major constrain for many of these applications. Here we propose a new approach to achieve low sheet resistance in large-scale CVD monolayer graphene using non-volatile ferroelectric polymer gating. In this hybrid structure, large-scale graphene is heavily doped up to 3{\times}1013 cm-2 by non-volatile ferroelectric dipoles, yielding a low she…
Experimental evidence is provided on close relation between polarization and space charge in corona poled PVDF films. It is shown that the depolarizing field is compensated by charges trapped in macroscopic transition zones, by which polarized parts of the volume are separated from non-polarized ones. The compensating charges are either injected in the bulk, or created inside due to the thermal emission and then trapped when the ferroelectric polarization in crystallites is formed.
Advances in complex oxide heteroepitaxy have highlighted the enormous potential of utilizing strain engineering via lattice mismatch to control ferroelectricity in thin-film heterostructures. This approach, however, lacks the ability to produce large and continuously variable strain states, thus limiting the potential for designing and tuning the desired properties of ferroelectric films. Here, we observe and explore dynamic strain-induced ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$ by laminating freestanding oxide films onto a stretchable polymer substrate. Using a combination of scanning probe microscopy,…
We performed temperature dependent transient photovoltage and photocurrent measurements on poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methylester bulk heterojuction solar cells. We found a strongly charge carrier concentration and temperature dependent Langevin recombination prefactor. The observed recombination mechanism is discussed in terms of bimolecular recombination. The experimental results were compared with charge carrier extraction by linearly increasing voltage (photo-CELIV) measurements done on the same blend system. We explain the charge carrier dynamics, following an ap…
We develop a model for charge trapping on conjugated polymer chains using a continuous representation of the polymer. By constraining the motion to along the chain, we find that kinks along the chain serve as points of attraction and can induce localization and spontaneous buckling of the chain. We implement this in a model system of a conjugated polymer donor and fullerene acceptor to mimic a polymer based photovoltaic system. We find that geometric fluctuations of the polymer give rise to deep potential energy traps at kinks which are often stronger than the Coulomb interaction between the e…
Electrocaloric (EC) materials show promise in eco-friendly solid-state refrigeration and integrable on-chip thermal management. While direct measurement of EC thin-films still remains challenging, a generic theoretical framework for quantifying the cooling properties of rich EC materials including normal-, relaxor-, organic- and anti-ferroelectrics is imperative for exploiting new flexible and room-temperature cooling alternatives. Here, we present a versatile theory that combines Master equation with Maxwell relations and analytically relates the macroscopic cooling responses in EC materials …
We present the computation of structural and polarization for a ferroelectric polymer, specifically, the beta-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) or (-CH$_2$-CF$_2$-)$_n$. Two structures have been described in the literature: one containing an undistorted carbon backbone (planar-zigzag) and the other containing alternatively deflected -CF$_2$- groups. Previous studies have indicated that these deflections have no significant effect on calculated elastic properties. We employ density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation to find relaxed atomic positions for the planar-z…
