A correlation between the change in magnetic susceptibility (Δ\c{hi}exp) upon crystallization of Cu-Zr, Hf metallic glasses (MG) with their glass forming ability (GFA) observed recently is found to apply to Cu-Ti and Zr-Ni alloys, too. In particular, a small Δ\c{hi}exp , which reflects similar electronic structures, ES, of glassy and corresponding crystalline alloys, corresponds to high GFA. Here, we studied Δ\c{hi}exp in five Cu-Ti and four Cu-Zr and Ni-Zr MGs. The fully crystalline final state of all alloys was verified from X-ray diffraction patterns. The variation of GFA with composition in Cu-Ti, Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf MGs was established from the variation of the corresponding critical casting thickness, dc. Due to the absence of data for dc in Ni-Zr MGs their GFA was described by using empirical criteria, such as the reduced glass transition temperature. A very good correlation between Δ\c{hi}exp and dc (and/or other criteria for GFA) was observed for all alloys studied. The correlation between the ES and GFA showed up best for Cu-Zr and NiZr2 alloys where direct data for the change in ES (ΔES) upon crystallization are available. The applicability of the Δ\c{hi}exp (ΔES) criterion for high GFA (which provides a simple way to select the compositions with high GFA) to other metal-metal MGs (including ternary and multicomponent bulk MGs) is briefly discussed.
Understanding the formation of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) in metallic systems and finding a reliable criterion for selection of BMG compositions are among the most important issues in condensed matter physics and material science. Using the results of magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on both amorphous and crystallized Cu-Hf alloys (30-70 at% Cu) we find a correlation between the difference in magnetic susceptibilities of corresponding glassy and crystalline alloys and the variation in the glass forming ability (GFA) in these alloys. Since the same correlation can be inferred fro…
Bulk ferromagnetic amorphous Fe-Ni-P-B alloys in rod shape were formed by a rapid solidification technique. The largest amorphous specimen prepared had a diameter of ~2.5 mm and the corresponding cooling rate for the glass formation of this alloy system in our experiment can be estimate to be around 492.4 K/s by the method of finite-difference numerical calculation. This value is on the same order of magnitude as the critical cooling rate Rc of Fe40Ni40P14B6 alloy estimated by the method of constructing the continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) curve. It is indicated that the heterophase imp…
In this paper we compare the composition fluctuations and interaction potentials of a good metallic glass former, Cu$_{50}$Zr$_{50}$, and a poor glass former, Ni$_{50}$Al$_{50}$. The Bhatia-Thornton correlations functions are calculated. Inspired by the observation of chemical ordering at the NiAl surface, we derive a new property, R$_{cn}$( q ), corresponding to linear susceptibility of concentration to a perturbation in density. We present a direct comparison of the potentials for the two model alloys, using a 2nd order density expansion, establish that the one body energy plays a crucial ro…
The non-reversing enthalpy near Tg, DHnr, in bulk GexAsxS1-2x glasses is found to display a global minimum (~0) in the 0.11 < x < 0.15 range, the reversibility window. Furthermore, the DHnr term is found to age for glass compositions both below (x < 0.11) and above (x > 0.15) the window but not in the window. Glass compositions in the window are rigid but stress-free, those below the window are floppy, and those above the window are stressed-rigid. Raman scattering shows floppy and stressed rigid networks to consist in part of monomers. The latter aspect of structure narrows the width of the r…
Bulk metallic glass forms when liquid metal alloys solidify without crystalization. In the search for Iron-based bulk glass-forming alloys of the metal-metalloid type (Fe-B- and Fe-C-based), crystals based on the structural prototype C6Cr23 often preempt the amorphous phase. Destabilizing this competing crystal structure could enhance glass-formability. We carry out first-principles total energy calculations of enthalpy of formation to identify third elements that can effectively destabilize C6Cr23. Yttrium appears optimal among transition metals, and rare earths also are suitable. Atomic size…
The investigation of devitrification in thermally annealed nanodimensional glassy alloy thin films provides a comprehensive understanding of their thermal stability, which can be used to explore potential applications. The amorphous to crystalline polymorphous transformation of cosputtered NiZr alloy (Ni78Zr22 at%) films, with a thickness lower than the reported critical limit of devitrification, was studied through detailed structural characterization and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Devitrification to a nanocrystalline state (Ni7Zr2 structure) was observed at 800 degC, with an increa…
A brief qualitative mapping is given between austenite, tweed and twinned phases of martensite alloys and corresponding paramagnetic, spin glass and periodic phases in spin glass alloys.
The first order martensitic transition in the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 is also a magnetic transition and has a large field induced effect. While cooling in the presence of field this first order magnetic martensite transition is kinetically arrested. Depending on the cooling field, a fraction of the arrested ferromagnetic austenite phase persists down to the lowest temperature as a magnetic glassy state, similar to the one observed in various intermetallic alloys and in half doped manganites. A detailed investigation of this first order ferromagnetic austenite (FM-A) to…
In the present investigation the glass forming ability of Ce65Al25Co10 metallic glass has been reported. It was successfully synthesised using melt spinning techniques. The existence of amorphous phase in Ce65Al25Co10 alloy have been proved using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. The thermal analysis of the synthesised sample using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows a glass transition around 371 K, thus confirms existence of glassy phase at room temperature. The hardness of the synthesised sample at different load have been demonstrated…
We demonstrate the use of Langevin spin dynamics for studying dynamical properties of an archetypical spin glass system. Simulations are performed on CuMn (20% Mn) where we study the relaxation that follows a sudden quench of the system to the low temperature phase. The system is modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian where the Heisenberg interaction parameters are calculated by means of first-principles density functional theory. Simulations are performed by numerically solving the Langevin equations of motion for the atomic spins. It is shown that dynamics is governed, to a large degree, by the…
Metallic glasses are excellent candidates for biomedical implant applications due to their inherent strength and corrosion resistance. Use of metallic glasses in structural applications is limited, however, because bulk dimensions are challenging to achieve. Glass-forming ability (GFA) varies strongly with alloy composition and becomes more difficult to predict as the number of chemical species in a system increases. Here we present a theoretical model - implemented in the AFLOW framework - for predicting GFA based on the competition between crystalline phases, and apply it to biologically rel…
The boson peak appears in all amorphous solids and is an excess of vibrational states at low frequencies compared to the phonon spectrum of the corresponding crystal. Until recently, the consensus was that it originated from "defects" in the glass. The nature of these defects is still under discussion, but the picture of regions with locally disturbed short-range order and/or decreased elastic constants has gained some traction. Recently, a different theory was proposed: The boson peak was attributed to the first van Hove singularity of crystal lattices which is only smeared out by the disorde…
Minor alloying is widely used to control mechanical properties of metallic glasses (MGs). The present understanding of how a small amount of alloying element changes strength is that the additions lead to more efficient packing of atoms and increased local topological order, which then increases the barrier for shear transformations and the resistance to plastic deformation. Here, we discover that minor alloying can improve the strength of MGs by increasing the chemical bond strength alone and show that this strengthening is distinct from changes in topological order. The results were obtained…
A quinary (La0.5Ce0.5)65Al10(Co0.6Cu0.4)25 alloy with superior glass-forming ability (GFA), identified by the formation of fully glassy rod of 32 mm in diameter by tilt-pour casting, was reported. By comparing with the GFA of quarternary (La0.5Ce0.5)65Al10TM25 and ternary Ln65Al10TM25 alloys (Ln = La or Ce; TM = Co or Cu), we suggest that the strong frustration of crystallization by utilizing the coexistence of La-Ce and Co-Cu to complicate competing crystalline phases is helpful to construct BMG component with superior GFA.
The ground state properties of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy of nominal composition Ni2Mn1.36Sn0.64 have been studied by dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. Like few other Ni-Mn based alloys, this sample exhibits exchange bias phenomenon. The observed exchange bias pinning was found to originate right from the temperature where a step-like anomaly is present in the zero-field-cooled magnetization data. The ac susceptibility study indicates the onset of spin glass freezing near this step-like anomaly with clear frequency shift. The sample can be identified as a reentrant…
The glass-formation range of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) based on lanthanum and cerium was pinpointed in La-Al-Co, Ce-Al-Co and pseudo-ternary (La-Ce)-Al-Co system respectively by copper mold casting. Through the stepwise substitution of La for solvent Ce in (LaxCe1-x)65Al10Co25 alloys (0<x<1), the fully glassy rods of the (La0.7Ce0.3)65Al10Co25 alloy can be successfully produced up to 25 mm in diameter by tilt-pour casting. Comparing with the glass-forming ability (GFA) of single-lanthanide based alloys, La65Al10Co25 and Ce65Al10Co25, the coexistence of La and Ce with similar atomic size and…
Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are amorphous alloys with desirable mechanical properties and processing capabilities. To date, the design of new BMGs has largely employed empirical rules and trial-and-error experimental approaches. Ab initio computational methods are currently prohibitively slow to be practically used in searching the vast space of possible atomic combinations for bulk glass formers. Here, we perform molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained, anisotropic potential, which mimics interatomic covalent bonding, to measure the critical cooling rates for metal-metalloid alloy…
We calculate the cohesive energies of Fe-based glass-forming alloys in the B-Fe-Y-Zr quaternary system. Our {\it ab-initio} calculations fully relax atomic positions and lattice parameters yielding enthalpies of mixing at T=0K. We examine both the known equilibrium and metastable phases as well as a selection of plausible structures drawn from related alloy systems. This method, generally reproduces experimentally determined phase diagrams while providing additional information about energetics of metastable and unstable structures. In particular we can identify crystalline structures whose fo…
The phenomenology of exchange bias effects observed in structurally single-phase alloys and compounds but composed of a variety of coexisting magnetic phases such as ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, spin-glass, cluster-glass and disordered magnetic states are reviewed. The investigations on exchange bias effects are discussed in diverse types of alloys and compounds where qualitative and quantitative aspects of magnetism are focused based on macroscopic experimental tools such as magnetization and magnetoresistance measurements. Here, we focus on improvement of fundamental issu…
We report a detailed study of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility performed on the zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) state of polycrystalline AuFe(11%) alloy. The temperature variation of ZFC and FC dc magnetization at low fields show a distinct peak around Tf = 33 K, which indicates the cooperative freezing of the finite size spin clusters. A weak thermomagnetic irreversibility between ZFC and FC magnetization appears at a temperature Tir, which is slightly below Tf. The ZFC ac susceptibility shows a sharp cusp at Tf, which shifts towards higher temperatures with an increase in…
The effect of dopants on the metallic glass forming ability is usually considered based on analysis of changes in the liquid structure or thermodynamics. What is missing in such considerations is an analysis of how a dopant changes the properties of the crystal phases which can form instead of the glass. In order to illuminate this aspect we performed molecular dynamics simulations to study the effects of Mg and Sm dopants on the crystal nucleation in Al. The simulation data were found to be consistent with the experimental observations that addition of Mg to Al does not lead to vitrification …
We present a detailed study of structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a series of Heusler alloys Fe2-xMnxCrAl (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1). Structural investigation of this series is carried out using high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Results suggest that with increasing Mn concentration, the L21 structure of Fe2CrAl is destabilized. The DC magnetization results show a decrement in paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition temperature (TC) with increasing Mn concentration. From the systematic analysis of magnetic memory effect, heat capacity, time depe…
We consider the question of the amorphization of metallic alloys by melt quenching, as predicted by molecular dynamics simulations with semi-empirical potentials. The parametrization of the potentials is discussed on the example of the ternary Cu-Ti-Zr transition metals alloy, using as reference the ab-initio simulation. The pair structure in the amorphous state is computed from a potential of the Stillinger Weber form. The transferability of the parameters during the quench is investigated using two parametrizations: from solid state data, as usual, and from a new parametrization on the liqui…
The magnetic ground state of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy of nominal composition Cu$_{2.84}$Mn$_{0.44}$Al$_{0.72}$ was investigated. The sample shows reentry of a glassy magnetic phase below the martensitic transition temperature, which is found to have complex character with two distinct anomalies in the temperature dependent ac susceptibility data. The sample retains its glassy phase even below the second transition as evident from the magnetic memory measurements in different protocols. Existence of two transitions along with their observed nature suggest that the system can be desc…
An archetypical spin-glass metallic alloy, Cu0.83Mn0.17, is studied by means of an ab-initio based approach. First-principles calculations are employed to obtain effective chemical, strain-induced and magnetic exchange interactions, as well as static atomic displacements, and the interactions are subsequently used in thermodynamic simulations. It is shown that the calculated atomic and magnetic short-range order accurately reproduces the results of neutron-scattering experiments. In particular, it is confirmed that the alloy exhibits a tendency toward ordering and the corresponding ordered pha…
The origin of the spin-glass state in (Fe,Sn)4N alloys is studied on the basis of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with parameters derived from first principles within the magnetic force theorem applied in the framework of the disordered local moments method and local spin-density approximation. We show that in the alloy concentration range where the spin-glass state is stable only one Fe sublattice is intrinsically magnetic and the interatomic exchange magnetic interactions are essentially short ranged due to effects of chemical and magnetic disorder. The magnetic Fe atoms with well-localized spin mo…
Using molecular simulations, we shed light on the mechanism underlying crystal nucleation in metal alloys and unravel the interplay between crystal nucleation and glass transition, as the conditions of crystallization lie close to this transition. While decreasing the temperature of crystallization usually results in a lower free energy barrier, we find an unexpected reversal of behavior for glass-forming alloys as the temperature of crystallization approaches the glass transition. For this purpose, we simulate the crystallization process in two glass-forming Copper alloys, $Ag_6Cu_4$, which h…
This review deals with the kinetic and thermodynamic fragility of bulk metallic glass forming liquids. The experimental methods to determine the kinetic fragility, relaxation behavior and thermodynamic functions of undercooled metallic liquids are introduced. Existing data are assessed and discussed using the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation and in the frameworks of the Adam-Gibbs as well as the Cohen-Turnbull free volume approach. In contrast to pure metals and most non glass forming alloys, bulk glass formers are moderately strong liquids. In general the fragility parameter $D^{*} $ increases …
Binary Cu-Zr system is a representative bulk glassformer demonstrating high glass forming ability due to pronounced icosahedral local ordering. From the first glance, Ni-Zr system is the most natural object to expect the same behavior because nickel and copper are neighbours in the periodic table and have similar physicochemical properties. However, doing molecular dynamics simulations of $\rm Ni_αZr_{1-α}$ alloys described by embedded atom model potential, we observe different behaviour. We conclude that the Ni-Zr system has the same glass-forming ability as an additive binary Lennard-Jones m…
Binary Ni$_{62}$Nb$_{38}$ alloy belongs to the unique class of binary off-eutectic systems, which are able to form a bulk glassy state [L. Xia et al., J. Appl. Phys. 99 (2006) 026103]. In the present work, the ($p$, $T$) phase diagram of Ni$_{62}$Nb$_{38}$ alloy was first determined for a wide thermodynamic range with temperatures from $300$\,K to $6000$\,K and with pressures from $1$\,atm to $1.2\times10^7$\,atm. For this thermodynamic range, elements of the phase diagram such as the liquid-crystal coexistence line and the glass transition line are defined. Our results reveal good agreement b…
Prediction of the glass forming ability (GFA) of alloys remains a major challenge. We are not able to predict the composition dependence of the GFA of even binary alloys. To investigate the effect of each element's propensity to form particular crystal structures on glass formation, we focus on binary alloys composed of elements with the same size, but different atomic symmetries using the patchy-particle model. For mixtures with atomic symmetries that promote different crystal structures, the minimum critical cooling rate $R_c$ is only a factor of $5$ lower than that for the pure substances. …
We study the influence of the liquid-vapor surface on the crystallization kinetics of supercooled metal alloys. While a good glass former, $\rm{Cu}_{50}\rm{Zr}_{50}$, shows no evidence of surface enhancement of crystallization, $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ exhibits an increased rate of crystallization due to heterogeneous nucleation at the free liquid surface. The difference in the compositional fluctuations at the interface is proposed as the explanation of the distinction between the two alloys. Specifically, we observe compositional ordering at the surface of $\rm{Ni}_{50}\rm{Al}_{50}$ while …
The first report of phase separation in metallic glass has attracted significant attention due to their unique micro-structural variations of amorphous phases at different domain size. In the continuation of this the view is to understanding the genesis of phase separation in Ce based metallic glass. In this paper, we present extensive investigations with particular reference to low concentration of Ga in Ce-Al-Ga metallic glass. Micro-structural characteristics and indentation behavior of melt spun Ce75Al25-xGax metallic glass has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission …
We have measured spin Hall effects in spin glass metals, CuMnBi alloys, with the spin absorption method in the lateral spin valve structure. Far above the spin glass temperature Tg where the magnetic moments of Mn impurities are randomly frozen, the spin Hall angle of CuMnBi ternary alloy is as large as that of CuBi binary alloy. Surprisingly, however, it starts to decrease at about 4Tg and becomes as little as 7 times smaller at 0.5Tg. A similar tendency was also observed in anomalous Hall effects in the ternary alloys. We propose an explanation in terms of a simple model considering the rela…
The critical cooling rate $\mathcal{R}_c$, below which liquids crystallize upon cooling, characterizes the glass-forming ability (GFA) of the system. While pure metals are typically poor glass formers with $\mathcal {R}_c>10^{12}\, {\rm K/s}$, specific multi-component alloys can form bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) even at cooling rates below $\mathcal {R}\sim 1\, {\rm K/s}$. Conventional wisdom asserts that metal alloys with three or more components are better glass formers (with smaller ${\cal R}_c$) than binary alloys. However, there is currently no theoretical framework that provides quantita…
A new amorphous alloy system $(TiZrNbCu)_{1-x}Co_x$ covering a broad composition range from the high-entropy (HEA) to Co rich alloys (x$\leqslant$ 0.43) has been fabricated, characterized and investigated. A comprehensive study of the chemical compositions, homogeneity, thermal stability, electronic structure and magnetic and mechanical properties has been performed. All properties change their variations with x within the HEA range. In particular, the average atomic volume deviates from the Vegard's law for x$\ge 0.2$, where also the average atomic packing fraction suddenly changes. The valen…
Glass transition temperatures (Tg) and liquid fragilities are measured along a line of constant Ge content in the system Ge-As-Te, and contrasted with the lack of glass-forming ability in the twin system Ge-Sb-Te at the same Ge content. The one composition established as free of crystal contamination in the latter system shows a behavior opposite to that of more covalent system. Comparison of Tg vs bond density in the three systems Ge-As-chalcogen differing in chalcogen i.e. S, Se, or Te, shows that as the chalcogen becomes more metallic, i.e. in the order S<Se<Te the bond density effect on Tg…
Semiconductor glasses exhibit many unique optical and electronic anomalies. We have put forth a semi-phenomenological scenario (J. Chem. Phys. 132, 044508 (2010)) in which several of these anomalies arise from deep midgap electronic states residing on high-strain regions intrinsic to the activated transport above the glass transition. Here we demonstrate at the molecular level how this scenario is realized in an important class of semiconductor glasses, namely chalcogen and pnictogen containing alloys. Both the glass itself and the intrinsic electronic midgap states emerge as a result of the f…
(withdrawn) A combined study of magnetic susceptibility and AC resistance was performed on melt-spun Cu-Co granular magnetic ribbons. The AC resistance as a function of temperature has a sharp maximum. We associate it with a diverging correlation length at the temperature of collective freezing of magnetic moments via increasing magnetic losses in the induced non-uniform field. Application of this model to the experimental data allows a direct determination of the critical exponent of correlation length on both sides of the transition. Giant AC magnetoresistance is observed at the freezing tem…
The effect of tensile stress applied during cooling of binary glasses on the potential energy states and mechanical properties is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We study the three-dimensional binary mixture that was first annealed near the glass transition temperature and then rapidly cooled under tension into the glass phase. It is found that at larger values of the applied stress, the liquid glass former freezes under higher strain and its potential energy is enhanced. For a fixed cooling rate, the maximum tensile stress that can be applied during cooling is reduced upon …
The elastic properties of the Zr$_{50}$Cu$_{40}$Ag$_{10}$ metallic alloy, such as the bulk modulus $B$, the shear modulus $G$, the Young's modulus $E$ and the Poisson's ratio $σ$, are investigated by molecular dynamics simulation in the temperature range $T=250-2000$ K and at an external pressure of $p = 1.0$ bar. It is shown that the liquid-glass transition is accompanied by a considerable increase in the shear modulus $G$ and the Young's modulus $E$ (by more than $50\%$). The temperature dependence of the Poisson's ratio exhibits a sharp fall from typical values for metals of approximately $…
We explore the use of characteristic temperatures derived from molecular dynamics to predict aspects of metallic Glass Forming Ability (GFA). Temperatures derived from cooling curves of self-diffusion, viscosity, and energy were used as features for machine learning models of GFA. Multiple target and model combinations with these features were explored. First, we use the logarithm of critical casting thickness, $log_{10}(D_{max})$, as the target and trained regression models on 21 compositions. Application of 3-fold cross-validation on the 21 $log_{10}(D_{max})$ alloys showed only weak correla…

The influence of thermal processing on the potential energy, atomic structure, and mechanical properties of metallic glasses is examined using molecular dynamics simulations. We study the three-dimensional binary mixture, which was first relaxed near the glass transition temperature, and then rapidly cooled deep into the glass phase. It was found that glasses prepared at higher annealing temperatures are relocated to higher energy states and their average glass structure remains more disordered, as reflected in the shape of the pair correlation function. The results of mechanical testing demon…
The influence of cyclic loading and glass stability on structural relaxation and yielding transition in amorphous alloys was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. We considered a binary mixture cooled deep into the glass phase and subjected to cyclic shear deformation where strain varies periodically but remains positive. We found that rapidly cooled glasses under asymmetric cyclic shear gradually evolve towards states with lower potential energy and finite stress at zero strain. At the strain amplitude just below a critical value, the rescaled distributions of nonaffine displacem…
Using an effective genetic algorithm, we uncover the structure of a metastable Al41Sm5 phase that supplements its family sharing similar short-range orders. The phase evolves upon heating an amorphous Al-9.7at.%Sm ribbon, produced by melt-spinning. The dynamical phase selection is discussed with respect to the structural connections between the short-range packing motifs in the amorphous precursor and those observed in the selected phases. The phase elucidated here is one of several newly discovered large-unit-cell phases found to form during devitrification from the glass in this binary syste…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the effect of uniaxial elastostatic compression on the potential energy, structural relaxation, and mechanical properties of binary glasses. We consider the three-dimensional Kob-Andersen binary mixture, which was initially cooled from the liquid state to the glass phase with a slow rate at zero pressure. The glass was then loaded with a static stress at the annealing temperature during extended time intervals. It is found that the static stress below the yielding point induces large-scale plastic deformation and significant rejuvenation whe…
