The phenomenology of exchange bias effects observed in structurally single-phase alloys and compounds but composed of a variety of coexisting magnetic phases such as ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, spin-glass, cluster-glass and disordered magnetic states are reviewed. The investigations on exchange bias effects are discussed in diverse types of alloys and compounds where qualitative and quantitative aspects of magnetism are focused based on macroscopic experimental tools such as magnetization and magnetoresistance measurements. Here, we focus on improvement of fundamental issues of the exchange bias effects rather than on their technological importance.
The ground state structures of the A$_x$B$_{1-x}$C wurtzite (WZ) alloys with $x=$0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 are revealed by a ground state search using the valence-force field model and density-functional theory total energy calculations. It is shown that the ground state WZ alloy always has a lower strain energy and formation enthalpy than the corresponding zinc-blende (ZB) alloy. Therefore, we propose that the WZ phase can be stabilized through alloying. This novel idea is supported by the fact that the WZ AlP$_{0.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$, AlP$_{0.75}$Sb$_{0.25}$, ZnS$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, and ZnS$_{0.75}$Te$_{0…
Atomistic simulations of liquid alloys face the challenge of correctly modeling basic thermodynamic properties. In this work we present an interatomic potential for the Li-Pb system, as well as a study of physical properties of Li-Pb alloys. Despite the complexity due to Li-Pb being a compound forming system where charge transfer is expected, we show here how the empirical EAM formalism is able to satisfactorily describe several physical properties in a wide range of Li concentration. Application of our potential to Li-Pb eutectic allows us to correctly predict many physical properties observe…
The bonding and stability of MgSi and AlMgSi compounds relevant to AlMgSi alloys is investigated with the use of (L)APW+(lo) DFT calculations. We show that the $β$ and $β''$ phases found in the precipitation sequence are characterised by the presence of covalent bonds between Si-Si nearest neighbour pairs and covalent/ionic bonds between Mg-Si nearest neighbour pairs. We then investigate the stability of two recently discovered precipitate phases, U1 and U2, both containing Al in addition to Mg and Si. We show that both phases are characterised by tightly bound Al-Si networks, made possible by…
Half-metallic ferromagnets and especially the full-Heusler alloys containing Co are at the center of scientific research due to their potential applications in spintronics. For realistic devices it is important to control accurately the creation of defects in these alloys. We review some of our late results on the role of defects and impurities in these compounds. More precisely we present results for the following cases (i) doping and disorder in Co$_2$Cr(Mn)Al(Si) alloys, (ii) half-metallic ferrimagnetism appeared due to the creation of Cr(Mn) antisites in these alloys, (iii) Co-doping in Mn…
We report a comprehensive study of the binary systems of the platinum group metals with the transition metals, using high-throughput first-principles calculations. These computations predict stability of new compounds in 38 binary systems where no compounds have been reported in the literature experimentally, and a few dozen of as yet unreported compounds in additional systems. Our calculations also identify stable structures at compound compositions that have been previously reported without detailed structural data and indicate that some experimentally reported compounds may actually be unst…
Many mixed ionic/electronic conductors (MIECs) applied in fuel cell electrodes can be considered as alloys between perovskite oxides and ordered oxygen vacancy compounds. For example, in the model MIEC (STF), low oxygen diffusion barrier exist in SrTiO3 lattice, when it has been mixed with SrFeO2.5 with intrinsic oxygen deficiency, the ionic conductivity can be greatly improved. Meanwhile, the electronic conductivity can be optimized by controlling the defect chemistry of the alloy. However, the configurational space is too large in such alloys so that it is difficult for direct atomic modelin…
In this work, we performed tight binding calculations of the electronic structure of III-V semiconductors compounds and their alloys based on the Extended Hückel Theory (EHT), where the Hückel parameters for the binary compounds were generated following a simulated annealing procedure. In particular, this article is focused on the dependency between band gap and the applied pressure and also the alloy composition.
High-entropy intermetallic compounds (HEICs) were fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering to fill a knowledge gap between the traditional high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and emerging high-entropy ceramics (HECs). Notably, several four- or five-component equimolar aluminides, such as the B2-phase (Fe1/5Co1/5Ni1/5Mn1/5Cu1/5)Al, have been made into single-phase HEICs for the first time. Thermodynamic modeling and a reversible, temperature-dependent, phase-stability experiment suggest that such B2-phase HEICs are entropy-stabilized phases. The structure of these HEICs resembles tha…
Based on experimental data it is shown, for some chosen alloys and compounds of iron, that there is no one unique relationship between the 57Fe-site magnetic hyperfine field, Bhf, and the magnetic moment per Fe atom, m. Instead, the Bhf-m plot consists of several branches, each of them being characteristic of a given alloy or compound. Consequently, the effective proportionality constant (hyperfine coupling constant) depends on the alloy system or compound, and for a given alloy system or compound it depends on the composition or even on the lattice site. Consequently, the scaling of Bhf into …
Technetium, element 43, is the only radioactive transition metal. It occurs naturally on earth in only trace amounts. Experimental investigation of its possible compounds is thus inherently difficult and limited. Half of the Tc-transition-metal systems (14 out of 28) are reported to be phase separating or lack experimental data. Using high-throughput first-principles calculations, we present a comprehensive investigation of the binary alloys of technetium with the transition metals. The calculations predict stable, ordered structures in nine of these 14 binary systems. They also predict additi…
The influence of a c(2x2) ordered interface alloy of 3d transition metals at the ferromagnet/nonmagnet interface on interlayer exchange coupling (IXC), the formation of quantum well states (QWS) and the phenomenon of Giant MagnetoResistance is investigated. We obtained a strong dependence of IXC on interface alloy formation. The GMR ratio is also strongly influenced. We found that Fe, Ni and Cu alloys at the interface enhance the GMR ratio for in-plane geometry by nearly a factor of 2.
This paper presents a detailed investigation of FeCr-based quaternary Heusler alloys. By using ultrasoft pseudopotential, electronic and magnetic properties of the compounds are studied within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT) by using the Quantum Espresso package. The thermodynamic, mechanical, and dynamical stability of the compounds is established through the comprehensive study of different mechanical parameters and phonon dispersion curves. The meticulous study of elastic parameters such as bulk, Young's, shear moduli, etc. is done to understand different mechanical propert…
Half-metallic antiferromagnets are the ideal materials for spintronic applications since their zero magnetization leads to lower stray fields and thus tiny energy losses. Starting from the Mn$_2$VAl and Mn$_2$VSi alloys we substitute Co or Fe for Mn and we show by means of first-principle electronic structure calculations that the resulting compounds are ferrimagnets. When the total number of valence electrons reaches the magic number of 24 the Fe-doped compounds are semi-metals and thus non-magnetic while the Co-doped ones show the desirable half-metallic antiferromagnetic character. The comp…
The flexibility of common generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation energy is investigated by monitoring the equilibrium volume of transition metals. It is shown that no universal gradient-level approximation yielding consistent errors for all metals exists. Based on an element-specific optimization, the concept of quasi-non-local gradient-level approximation is introduced. The strength of the scheme is demonstrated on several transition metal alloys.
Density-functional studies of the electronic structures and exchange interaction parameters have been performed for a series of ferromagnetic full Heusler alloys of general formula Co$_2$MnZ (Z = Ga, Si, Ge, Sn), Rh$_2$MnZ (Z = Ge, Sn, Pb), Ni$_2$MnSn, Cu$_2$MnSn and Pd$_2$MnSn, and the connection between the electronic spectra and the magnetic interactions have been studied. Different mechanisms contributing to the exchange coupling are revealed. The band dependence of the exchange parameters, their dependence on volume and valence electron concentration have been thoroughly analyzed within t…
We report on an atomic-scale X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy study on Fe-rich FeAl in the B2-ordered regime revealing effective <111>-exchanges of atoms on the Al-sublattice. The diffusion mechanism responsible for these exchanges is the dominating process for chemical diffusion and therefore controls long-range material transport in the system. Comparison with previous atomistic results shows that the dominance of further exchanges can be characteristic at moderate temperatures where the system is highly ordered.
Despite the increasing importance of hafnium in numerous technological applications, experimental and computational data on its binary alloys is sparse. In particular, data is scant on those binary systems believed to be phase separating. We performed a comprehensive study of 44 hafnium binary systems with alkali metals, alkaline earths, transition metals and metals, using high-throughput first principles calculations. These computations predict novel unsuspected compounds in six binary systems previously believed to be phase separating They also predict a few unreported compounds in additiona…
We have synthesized Cr1.4Fe0.6O3 compound through mechanical alloying of Cr2O3 and Fe2O3 powders and subsequent thermal annealing. The XRD spectrum, SEM picture and microanalysis of EDAX spectrum have been used to understand the structural evolution in the alloyed compound. The alloyed samples are matching to rhombohedral structure with R3C space group. The observation of a modulated magnetic order confirmed a systematic diffusion of Fe atoms into the Cr sites of lattice structure. A field induced magnetic behaviour is seen in the field dependence of magnetization data of the annealed samples.…
Half-Heusler (HH) alloys have attracted considerable interest as promising thermoelectric (TE) materials in the temperature range around 700 K and above, which is close to the temperature range of most industrial waste heat sources. The past few years have seen nanostructuing play an important role in significantly enhancing the TE performance of several HH alloys. In this article, we briefly review the recent progress and advances in these HH nanocomposites. We begin by presenting the structure of HH alloys and the different strategies that have been utilized for improving the TE properties o…
Intermetallic Heusler alloys are amongst the most attractive half-metallic systems due to the high Curie temperatures and the structural similarity to the binary semiconductors. In this review we present an overview of the basic electronic and magnetic properties of the half-metallic full-Heusler alloys like Co$_2$MnGe. Ab-initio results suggest that the electronic and magnetic properties in these compounds are intrinsically related to the appearance of the minority-spin gap. The total spin magnetic moment in the unit cell, $M_t$, scales linearly with the number of the valence electrons, $Z_t$…
We have identified the pieces of the Fermi surface responsible for the long period oscillations of magnetic coupling across Cr and Cr$_{(1-x)}$V$_x$ alloy spacers in metallic multilayers. Analysing experiments and results of KKR-CPA calculations we find that the periods are determined by the extremal wave~vectors of the hole pockets centered on the N-point in the Brillouin zone.
The interatomic exchange interactions and Curie temperatures in Ni-based full Heusler alloys Ni2MnX with X=Ga, In, Sn and Sb are studied within the framework of the density-functional theory. The calculation of the exchange parameters is based on the frozen-magnon approach. Despite closeness of the experimental Curie temperatures for all four systems their magnetism appeared to differ strongly. This difference involves both the Mn-Mn and Mn-Ni exchange interactions. The Curie temperatures, Tc, are calculated within the mean-field approximation by solving a matrix equation for a multi-sublattic…
By using ab initio electronic structure calculations here we report the three new full Heusler alloys which are possessing very good thermoelectric behavior and expected to be synthesized in the laboratories. These are Fe2 ScP, Fe2 ScAs and Fe2 ScSb compound. First two compounds are indirect band gap semiconductors and the last one shows semimetallic ground state. The value of band gap of Fe2 ScP and Fe2 ScAs is 0.3 and 0.09 eV, respectively. These compounds show the presence of flat conduction bands along Γ - X-direction suggesting for the large electron like effective mass and promising for …
Using the full-potential local orbital minimum-basis method, the Ti2-based full-Heusler alloys are studied. The results show that these compounds exhibit a half-metallic behavior, however, in contrast to the conventional full-Heusler alloys, the full-Heusler alloys show a Slater-Pauling behavior and the total spin magnetic moment per unit cell(Mt) following the rule Mt=Zt-18. The origin of the gap in these half-metallic alloys are well understood. It is found that the half-metallic properties of Ti2-based compounds are insensitive to the lattice distortion and a fully spin polarization can be ob…
We investigate the exchange coupling constant $J_{ij}$ in Nd$_x$Fe$_{1-x}$ amorphous alloys with different compositions within the framework of first-principles calculation. We observed a strong atomic-dependence of $J_{ij}$ and its fluctuations. We show that the composition strongly affects the distance dependence of $J_{ij}$. Composition dependence of calculated Curie temperatures is modest for $x<0.5$. To examine the effect of the local environment on the exchange couplings, we demonstrate combined analyses of the coordination structure and exchange coupling constants using the Gabriel grap…
Heusler alloys with Mn and Co have been found to exhibit interesting electronic and magnetic properties. Mn$_2$CoAl is well known SGS compound while Mn$_2$CoGa has weak half metallic character. By using plane wave pseudo-potential method, we studied the effect of Fe and Cr doping on half-metalicity and magnetism of these compounds. The doping destroys the SGS nature of Mn$_2$CoAl while the small-scale doping enhance the half-metallicity of Mn$_2$CoGa making it perfect half-metal. In case of Mn$_2$CoAl, the doping decrease the band gap while increase in band width is noticed for Mn$_2$CoGa. The…
Half-metallic ferromagnetic full-Heusler alloys containing Co and Mn, having the formula Co$_2$MnZ where Z a sp element, are among the most studied Heusler alloys due to their stable ferromagnetism and the high Curie temperatures which they present. Using state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations we show that when Mn atoms migrate to sites occupied in the perfect alloys by Co, these Mn atoms have spin moments antiparallel to the other transition metal atoms. The ferrimagnetic compounds, which result from this procedure, keep the half-metallic character of the parent compounds and the …
Electronic structure calculations from first-principles are employed to design some new half-metallic fully-compensated ferrimagnets (or as they are widely known half-metallic antiferromagnets) susceptible of finding applications in spintronics. Cr$_2$MnZ (Z= P, As, Sb, Bi) compounds have 24 valence electrons per unit cell and calculations show that their total spin moment is approximately zero for a wide range of lattice constants in agreement with the Slater-Pauling behavior for ideal half-metals. Simultaneously, the spin magnetic moments of Cr and Mn atoms are antiparallel and the compounds…
We study the exchange interactions in half-metallic Heusler alloys using first-principles calculations in conjunction with the frozen-magnon approximation. The Curie temperature is estimated within both mean-field (MF) and random-phase-approximation (RPA) approaches. For the half-Heusler alloys NiMnSb and CoMnSb the dominant interaction is between the nearest Mn atoms. In this case the MF and RPA estimations differ strongly. The RPA approach provides better agreement with experiment. The exchange interactions are more complex in the case of full-Heusler alloys Co$_2$MnSi and Co$_2$CrAl where t…
By means of density functional calculations the magnetic and electronic properties and phase stabilities of the Heusler compounds Co$_2$MSi (with M=Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) were investigated. Based on the calculated results we predict the ferromagnetic phases of the compounds Co$_2$TiSi, Co$_2$VSi and Co$_2$CrSi to be half-metals. Of particular interest is Co$_2$CrSi because of its high density of majority spin states at Fermi energy in combination with a reasonably high estimated Curie temperature of 747K. The compounds Co$_2$TiSi and Co$_2$VSi are thermodynamically stable, whereas Co$_2$Cr…
In this paper we report the existence of a giant magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a intermetallic compound non-containing rare-earth. This effect is associated with the concomitant occurrence of a structural and a magnetic transition. The result has been compared with that obtained in a parent compound in which magnetic and structural transition occur separately.
First-principles simulations have been performed for [001]-ordered Mn/Ge and Mn/GaAs "digital alloys", focusing on the effects of i) a larger band-gap and ii) a different semiconducting host on the electronic structure of the magnetic semiconductors of interest. Our results for the exchange constants in Mn/Ge, evaluated using a frozen-magnon scheme, show that a larger band-gap tends to give a stronger nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic coupling and an overall enhanced in-plane ferromagnetic coupling even for longer-ranged coupling constants. As for the chemical effects on the exchange constants, w…
Half Heusler (HH) thermoelectric alloys provide a wide platform to choose materials with non-toxic and earth abundant elements. This article presents an ab-initio theoretical evaluation of electrical and thermal transport properties of three Bismuth-based most promising thermoelectric alloys, selected out of 54 stable HH compounds. These are brand new compounds which are recently proposed to be stable (Nature Chem. 7, 308 (2015)) and may have interesting properties. The calculated band structure of the three compounds, namely HfRhBi, ZrIrBi and ZrRhBi, served as a hint for their promising ther…
First-principles calculations are used in order to investigate phonon anomalies in non-magnetic and magnetic Heusler alloys. Phonon dispersions for several systems in their cubic L2$\mathrm{_1}$ structure were obtained along the [110] direction. We consider compounds which exhibit phonon instabilities and compare them with their stable counterparts. The analysis of the electronic structure allows us to identify the characteristic features leading to structural instabilities. The phonon dispersions of the unstable compounds show that, while the acoustic modes tend to soften, the optical modes d…
The effect of ball milling on the structural, magnetic and exchange bias properties of Ni50Mn36Fe2Sb12 Heusler alloys was studied. The ball milled samples exhibited coexisting austenite and martensite phases at room temperature, while annealing supresses the austenite phase completely. Ball milling was found to reduce the grain size, which resulted in the weakening of the ferromagnetic properties. An exchange bias field of 111 Oe and coercivity of 826 Oe were observed at 5 K in the as-milled sample, in contrast to the bulk alloy values of 288 Oe and 292 Oe, respectively. Annealing causes an in…
We resolve issues that have plagued reliable prediction of relative phase stability for solid-solutions and compounds. Due to its commercially important phase diagram, we showcase Al-Li system because historically density-functional theory (DFT) results show large scatter and limited success in predicting the structural properties and stability of solid-solutions relative to ordered compounds. Using recent advances in an optimal basis-set representation of the topology of electronic charge density (and, hence, atomic size), we present DFT results that agree reasonably well with all known exper…
We propose an explanation of anomalies observed in the behavior of deformation hardening of Invars. An extremely strong volume magnetostriction, typical of Invars, results in an enhancement of the exchange contribution to the energy of the dislocation system by about three orders of magnitude with respect to its value in conventional ferromagnetics. Both the self energy of individual dislocations and the interaction between them, determined usually only by the elastic deformation, in Invars is strongly diminished by the contribution of the exchange energy. This fact explains a strong suppressi…
We report a study on the electronic and magnetic properties of a novel Rb$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$C alloy. We find that the variation of the lattice parameter as function of Rb composition exhibits a deviation from the Vegard's law of about 0.4 Å. The total energy results predict a ferromagnetic ordering for Sr-rich alloy, and antiferromagnetic ordering for RbC-rich alloy with a total magnetic moment ranging from 2 to 3$μ_\text{B}$ per cation. As for the parent compounds, RbC and SrC, the origin of magnetism arises from the polarization of the carbon $p$-orbitals. From the spin-polarized calculations, …
Exchange coupling between two magnetic layers through an interlayer is of broad interest for numerous recent applications of nano-magnetic systems. In this Letter we study ferromagnetic exchange coupling through amorphous paramagnetic Fe-Ta alloys. We show that the exchange coupling depends exponentially on spacer thickness and scales with the Fe-Ta susceptibility, which can be tuned via the alloy composition and/or temperature. Such materials are of high interest for the engineering of perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB-MgO based tunnel junctions as it enables ferromagnetic coupling of magnetic…
We report the parameter-free, density functional theory calculations of interatomic exchange interactions and Curie temperatures of half-metallic ferrimagnetic full Heusler alloys Mn2VZ (Z=Al, Ge). To calculate the interatomic exchange interactions we employ the frozen-magnon approach. The Curie temperatures are calculated within the mean-field approximation to the classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian by solving a matrix equation for a multi-sublattice system. Our calculations show that, although a large magnetic moment is carried by Mn atoms, competing ferromagnetic (inter sublattice) and antifer…
High entropy alloys (HEAs) are multicomponent compounds whose high configurational entropy allows them to solidify into a single phase, with a simple crystal lattice structure. Some HEA's exhibit desirable properties, such as high specific strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance, while challenging the scientist to make confident predictions in the face of multiple competing phases. We demonstrate phase stability in the multicomponent alloy system of Cr-Mo-Nb-V, for which some of its binary subsystems are subject to phase separation and complex intermetallic-phase formation. Our first-pri…

We expand our study on the full-Heusler compounds [I. Galanakis \textit{et al.}, Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{89}, 042502 (2006)] to cover also the case of doping and disorder in the case of Co$_2$MnAl and Co$_2$MnGa half-metallic Heusler alloys. These alloys present a region of very small minority density of states instead of a real gap. Electronic structure calculations reveal that doping with Fe and Cr in the case of Co$_2$MnAl retains the half-metallicity contrary to the Co$_2$MnGa compound. Cr impurities present an unusual behavior and the spin moment of the Cr impurity scales almost linearl…
Heusler alloys have been intensively studied due to the wide variety of properties that they exhibit. One of these properties is of particular interest for technological applications, i.e. the fact that some Heusler alloys are half-metallic. In the following, a systematic study of the magnetic properties of three different Heusler families $\textrm{Co}_2\textrm{Mn}\textrm{Z}$, $\text{Co}_2\text{Fe}\text{Z}$ and $\textrm{Mn}_2\textrm{V}\textrm{Z}$ with $\text{Z}=\left(\text{Al, Si, Ga, Ge}\right)$ is performed. A key aspect is the determination of the Gilbert damping from first principles calcu…
The mechanism of spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) and the dominant factor of its blocking temperature are still unclear in Heusler alloys. Here, the related investigations are performed in Mn2Ni1.5Al0.5 Heusler alloys with SEB. The results of both magnetic measurements and first-principles calculations confirmed that spin frustrated and unfrustrated antiferromagnetic (AFM) states coexist there and they have different magnetic anisotropies, which are essential for SEB. Based on a series of measurement strategies, we demonstrate that the frustrated AFM state undergoes a first-order magnetic trans…
We report here sign reversal and tunability of exchange bias in AuFe cosputtered films of thickness about 63 nm. As deposited film exhibits exchange bias effect at room temperature without external triggering field and its magnitude increases gradually with decrease in temperature down to 5 K. Upon irradiation with 100 MeV Au9+ ions at a fluence of 5*1013 ions/cm2, hysteresis loop shifts completely from origin towards positive field side at room temperature and reverses sign when temperature is reduced to 5 K as studied by SQUID magnetometry. A well defined uniaxial magnetic anisotropy has bee…
Heusler alloys are promising for several applications, including magnetic refrigeration, due to high magnetocaloric and magnetovolume effects. One way to optimize this potential is by increasing the magnetovolume effect. Using density functional theory with the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method, we calculate the effective exchange interaction energies and corresponding mean field Curie temperature as a function of the volume (hydrostatic pressure) in several L2 1 -type Co 2 YZ Heusler alloys. Different qualitative trends and signs of the pressure derivatives of the Curie temperature and moments ar…
We demonstrate how exchange hardening can arise in a chemically-disordered solid solution from a first-principles statistical mechanics approach. A general mixed-basis chemical and magnetic cluster expansion has been developed, and applied to the Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ru$_2$Sn Heusler alloy system; single-phase solid solutions between antiferromagnetic \ch{MnRu2Sn} and ferromagnetic \ch{FeRu2Sn} with disorder on the Mn/Fe sublattice that exhibit unexpected exchange hardening. Monte Carlo simulations applied to the cluster expansion are able to reproduce the experimentally measured magnetic transitio…
