We consider the (barotropic) Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid driven by a stochastic forcing. Adapting the method of convex integration we show that the initial value problem is ill-posed in the class of weak (distributional) solutions. Specifically, we find a sequence $τ_M \to \infty$ of positive stopping times for which the Euler system admits infinitely many solutions originating from the same initial data. The solutions are weak in the PDE sense but strong in the probabilistic sense, meaning, they are defined on an {\it a priori} given stochastic basis and adapted to the driving stochastic process.
We consider the model of viscous compressible multi-fluids with multiple velocities. We review different formulations of the model and the existence results for boundary value problems. We analyze crucial mathematical difficulties which arise during the proof of the global existence theorems in 1D case.
We consider the equations which describe polytropic one-dimensional flows of viscous compressible multifluids. We prove global existence and uniqueness of a solution to the initial-boundary value problem which corresponds to the flow in a bounded space domain.
We consider the equations of a multi-velocity model of a binary mixture of viscous compressible fluids (two-fluid medium) in the case of one-dimensional barotropic motions. We prove the global (in time) existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to the initial-boundary value problem describing the motion in a bounded spatial domain.
We consider the initial boundary value problem for a model system of one-dimensional equations which describe unsteady polytropic motions of a mixture of viscous compressible fluids. We prove the global existence and uniqueness theorem for the strong solution without restrictions on the structure of the viscosity matrix except standard properties of symmetry and positiveness.
The present paper deals with the Cauchy problem of a compressible generic two-fluid model with capillarity effects in any dimension $N\geq2$. We first study the unique global solvability of the model in spaces with critical regularity indices with respect to the scaling of the associated equations. Due to the presence of the capillary terms, we exploit the parabolic properties of the linearized system for all frequencies which enables us to apply contraction mapping principle to show the unique global solvability of strong solutions close to a stable equilibrium state. Furthermore, under a mil…
We consider a boundary-value problem describing the steady motion of a two-component mixture of viscous compressible heat-conducting fluids in a bounded domain. We make no simplifying assumptions except for postulating the coincidence of phase temperatures (which is physically justified in certain situations), that is, we retain all summands in equations that are a natural generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier model of the motion of a one-component medium. We prove the existence of weak generalized solutions of the problem.
Consider a free boundary problem of compressible-incompressible two-phase flows with surface tension and phase transition in bounded domains $Ω_{t +}, Ω_{t -} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 2$, where the domains are separated by a sharp compact interface $Γ_t \subset \mathbb{R}^{N - 1}$. We prove a global in time unique existence theorem for such free boundary problem under the assumption that the initial data are sufficiently small and the initial domain of the incompressible fluid is close to a ball. In particular, we obtain the solution in the maximal $L_p - L_q$-regularity class with $2 < p…
In general, the resistivity is inversely proportional to the electrical conductivity, and is usually taken to be zero when the conducting fluid is of extremely high conductivity (e.g., ideal conductors). In this paper, we first establish the global well-posedness of strong solution to an initial-boundary value problem of the one-dimensional compressible, viscous, heat-conductive, non-resistive MHD equations with general heat-conductivity coefficient and large data. Then, the non-resistive limit is justified and the convergence rates are obtained, provided the heat-conductivity satisfies some g…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the compressible Euler system with strongly singular velocity alignment. We prove the existence and uniqueness of global solutions in critical Besov spaces to the considered system with small initial data. The local-in-time solvability is also addressed. Moreover, we show the large-time asymptotic behavior and optimal decay estimates of the solutions as $t\to \infty$.
In this paper, we consider a two-dimensional non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic model, taking the fluctuation of absolute temperature into account. Combining the method of weak convergence developed by Lions [20], Feireisl et al. [7, 8] from compressible Navier-Stokes(- Fourier) system and the new technique of variable reduction proposed by Vasseur et al. [26] and refined by Novotny et al. [22] from compressible two-fluid models, weak solutions are shown to exist globally in time with finite energy initial data. The result is the first one on global solvability to full compressible, viscous, no…
We address the structural stability of 3-D axisymmetric subsonic flows with nonzero swirl for the steady compressible Euler-Poisson system in a cylinder supplemented with non small boundary data. A special Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field is introduced for 3-D axisymmetric flow with a nonzero swirl(=angular momentum density) component. With the newly introduced decomposition, a quasilinear elliptic system of second order is derived from the elliptic modes in Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flows. Due to the nonzero swirl, the main difficulties lie in the solvability of a singula…
The heat conducting compressible viscous flows are governed by the Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) system. In this paper, we study the NSF system accomplished by the Newton law of cooling for the heat transfer at the boundary. On one part of the boundary, we consider the Navier slip boundary condition, while in the remaining part the inlet and outlet occur. The existence of a weak solution is proved via a new fixed point argument. With this new approach, the weak solvability is possible in Lipschitz domains, by making recourse to \(L^q\)-Neumann problems with \(q>n\).Thus, standard existence resul…
We prove the ill-posedness of the 3-D baratropic Navier-Stokes equation for the initial density and velocity belonging to the critical Besov space $(\dot{B}^{\f 3p}_{p,1}+\barρ,\,\dot{B}^{\f 3p-1}_{p,1})$ for $p>6$ in the sense that a ``norm inflation" happens in finite time, here $\barρ$ is a positive constant. Our argument also shows that the compressible viscous heat-conductive flows is ill-posed for the initial density, velocity and temperature belonging to the critical Besov space $(\dot{B}^{\f 3p}_{p,1}+\barρ,\,\dot{B}^{\f 3p-1}_{p,1},\,\dot{B}^{\f 3p-2}_{p,1})$ for $p>3$. These results …
We consider the Cauchy problem for compressible Navier--Stokes equations of the ideal gas in the three-dimensional spaces. It is known that the Cauchy problem in the scaling critical spaces of the homogeneous Besov spaces $\dot B^{\frac{3}{p}}_{p,1}\times\dot B^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}_{p,1}\times\dot B^{-2+\frac{3}{p}}_{p,1}$ is uniquely solvable for all $1 < p<3$ and is ill-posed for all $p>3$. However, it is an open problem whether or not it is well-posed in the case when $p=3$. In this paper, we prove that for the case $p=3$ the Cauchy problem is ill-posed by constructing a sequence of initial dat…
The work addresses a singular limit for a rotating compressible Euler system in the low Mach number and low Rossby number regime. Based on the concept of dissipative measure-valued solution, the quasi-geostrophic system is identified as the limit problem in case of ill-prepared initial data. The ill-prepared initial data will cause rapidly oscillating acoustic waves. Using dispersive estimates of Strichartz type, the effect of the acoustic waves in the asymptotic limit is eliminated.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for multidimensional elliptic equations in a cylindrical domain. The method of spectral expansion in eigenfunctions of the Cauchy problem for equations with deviating argument establishes a criterion of the strong solvability of the considered elliptic Cauchy problem. It is shown that the ill-posedness of the elliptic Cauchy problem is equivalent to the existence of an isolated point of the continuous spectrum for a self-adjoint operator with deviating argument.
We establish uniform with respect to the Mach number regularity estimates for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system in smooth domains with Navier-slip condition on the boundary in the general case of ill-prepared initial data. To match the boundary layer effects due to the fast oscillations and the ill-prepared initial data assumption, we prove uniform estimates in an anisotropic functional framework with only one normal derivative close to the boundary. This allows to prove the local existence of a strong solution on a time interval independent of the Mach number and to justify the…
We consider the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid under the mutual interactions with magnetic field. We show that the initial value problem is ill--posed in the class of weak solutions for a large class of physically admissible data. We also consider the same problem for inviscid heat--conductive fluid and show the same result under certain restrictions imposed on the magnetic field. The main tool is the method of convex integration adapted to the Euler system with `variable coefficients'.
In this paper, we propose a new approach to singular limits of inviscid fluid flows based on the concept of dissipative measure-valued solutions. We show that dissipative measure-valued solutions of the compressible Euler equations converge to the smooth solution of the incompressible Euler system when the Mach number tends to zero. This holds both for well-prepared and ill-prepared initial data, where in the latter case the presence of acoustic waves causes difficulties. However this effect is eliminated on unbounded domains thanks to dispersion.
In the work, we consider the zero Mach number limit of compressible primitive equations in the domain $\mathbb{R}^2 \times 2\mathbb{T}$ or $\mathbb{T}^2 \times 2\mathbb{T}$. We identify the limit equations to be the primitive equations with the incompressible condition. The convergence behaviors are studied in both $\mathbb{R}^2 \times 2\mathbb{T}$ and $\mathbb{T}^2 \times 2\mathbb{T}$, respectively. This paper takes into account the high oscillating acoustic waves and is an extension of our previous work by X. Liu and E.S. Titi, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal., 238, 705-747, 2020.
The quasineutral limit of compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system with heat conductivity and general (ill-prepared) initial data is rigorously proved in this paper. It is proved that, as the Debye length tends to zero, the solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system converges strongly to the strong solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations plus a term of fast singular oscillating gradient vector fields. Moreover, if the Debye length, the viscosity coefficients and the heat conductivity coefficient independently go to zero, we obtain the incompressible Euler equatio…
In dimension $n=2$ and $3$, we show that for any initial datum belonging to a dense subset of the energy space, there exist infinitely many global-in-time admissible weak solutions to the isentropic Euler system whenever $1<γ\leq 1+\frac2n$. This result can be regarded as a compressible counterpart of the one obtained by Szekelyhidi--Wiedemann (ARMA, 2012) for incompressible flows. Similarly to the incompressible result, the admissibility condition is defined in its integral form. Our result is based on a generalization of a key step of the convex integration procedure. This generalization all…
In this paper, we study the relaxation limit of the relaxing Cauchy problem for non-isentropic compressible Euler equations with damping in multi-dimensions. We prove that the velocity of the relaxing equations converges weakly to that of the relaxed equations, while other variables of the relaxing equations converges strongly to the corresponding variables of the relaxed equations. We show that as relaxation time approaches 0, there exists an initial layer for the ill-prepared data, the convergence of the velocity is strong outside the layer; while there is no initial layer for the well-prepa…
The Cauchy problem for the compressible flow of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of critical spaces is considered. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of global solutions provided that the initial data are close to some equilibrium states. This result improves the work by Hu and Wu [SIAM J. Math. Anal., 45 (2013), pp. 2678-2699] through relaxing the regularity requirement of the initial data in terms of the director field. We then consider the incompressible limit problem for ill prepared initial data. We prove that as the Mach number tends to zero, the global solution to t…
We consider the Euler system describing the motion of a compressible fluid driven by a multiplicative white noise. We identify a large class of initial data for which the problem is ill posed - there exist infinitely many global in time weak solutions. The solutions are adapted to the noise and satisfy the entropy admissibility criterion.
We consider the impingement of a droplet onto a wall with high impact speed. To model this process we favour a diffuse-interface concept. Precisely, we suggest a compressible Navier--Stokes--Allen--Cahn model. Basic properties of the model are discussed. To cope with the fluid-wall interaction, we derive thermodynamically consistent boundary conditions that account for dynamic contact angles. We briefly discuss an discontinuous Galerkin scheme which approximates the energy dissipation of the system exactly and illustrate the results with a series of numerical simulations. Currently, these simu…
In this paper, we study the low Mach and Froude number limit for the all-time classical solution of a fluid-vacuum free boundary problem of one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. No smallness of initial data for the existence of all-time solutions are supposed. The uniform estimates of solutions with respect to the Mach number and the Froude number are established for all the time, in particular for high order derivatives of the pressure, which is a novelty in contrast to previous results. The cases of "ill-prepared" initial data and "well-prepared" initial data are both discuss…
We study a general convergence theory for the numerical solutions of compressible viscous and electrically conducting fluids with a focus on numerical schemes that preserve the divergence free property of magnetic field exactly. Our strategy utilizes the recent concepts of dissipative weak solutions and consistent approximations. First, we show the dissipative weak--strong uniqueness principle, meaning a dissipative weak solution coincides with a classical solution as long as they emanate from the same initial data. Next, we show the convergence of consistent approximation towards the dissipat…
We prove the local-in-time well-posedness for the solution of the compressible Euler equations in $3$-D, for the Cauchy data of the velocity, density and vorticity $(v,\varrho, \fw) \in H^s\times H^s\times H^{s'}$, $2<s'<s$. The classical local well-posedness result for the compressible Euler equations in $3$-D holds for the initial data $v, \varrho \in H^{s+\f12},\, s>2$. Due to the works of Smith-Tataru and Wang for the irrotational isentropic case, the local well-posedness can be achieved if the data satisfy $v, \varrho \in H^{s}$, with $s>2$. In the incompressible case the solution is prov…
