We propose a generalized Sparse Representation- based Classification (SRC) algorithm for open set recognition where not all classes presented during testing are known during training. The SRC algorithm uses class reconstruction errors for classification. As most of the discriminative information for open set recognition is hidden in the tail part of the matched and sum of non-matched reconstruction error distributions, we model the tail of those two error distributions using the statistical Extreme Value Theory (EVT). Then we simplify the open set recognition problem into a set of hypothesis testing problems. The confidence scores corresponding to the tail distributions of a novel test sample are then fused to determine its identity. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using four publicly available image and object classification datasets and it is shown that this method can perform significantly better than many competitive open set recognition algorithms. Code is public available: https://github.com/hezhangsprinter/SROSR

This report concerns the use of techniques for sparse signal representation and sparse error correction for automatic face recognition. Much of the recent interest in these techniques comes from the paper "Robust Face Recognition via Sparse Representation" by Wright et al. (2009), which showed how, under certain technical conditions, one could cast the face recognition problem as one of seeking a sparse representation of a given input face image in terms of a "dictionary" of training images and images of individual pixels. In this report, we have attempted to clarify some frequently encountere…

To better select the correct training sample and obtain the robust representation of the query sample, this paper proposes a discriminant-based sparse optimization learning model. This learning model integrates discriminant and sparsity together. Based on this model, we then propose a classifier called locality-based discriminant sparse representation (LDSR). Because discriminant can help to increase the difference of samples in different classes and to decrease the difference of samples within the same class, LDSR can obtain better sparse coefficients and constitute a better sparse representa…

Gait recognition is widely used in social security applications due to its advantages in long-distance human identification. Recently, sequence-based methods have achieved high accuracy by learning abundant temporal and spatial information. However, their robustness under adversarial attacks has not been clearly explored. In this paper, we demonstrate that the state-of-the-art gait recognition model is vulnerable to such attacks. To this end, we propose a novel temporal sparse adversarial attack method. Different from previous additive noise models which add perturbations on original samples, …

Sparse representation-based classification (SRC) has attracted much attention by casting the recognition problem as simple linear regression problem. SRC methods, however, still is limited to enough labeled samples per category, insufficient use of unlabeled samples, and instability of representation. For tackling these problems, an unlabeled data driven inverse projection pseudo-full-space representation-based classification model is proposed with low-rank sparse constraints. The proposed model aims to mine the hidden semantic information and intrinsic structure information of all available d…
Facial expression is the most natural means for human beings to communicate their emotions. Most facial expression analysis studies consider the case of acted expressions. Spontaneous facial expression recognition is significantly more challenging since each person has a different way to react to a given emotion. We consider the problem of recognizing spontaneous facial expression by learning discriminative dictionaries for sparse representation. Facial images are represented as a sparse linear combination of prototype atoms via Orthogonal Matching Pursuit algorithm. Sparse codes are then used…

Previous works have shown that face recognition with high accurate 3D data is more reliable and insensitive to pose and illumination variations. Recently, low-cost and portable 3D acquisition techniques like ToF(Time of Flight) and DoE based structured light systems enable us to access 3D data easily, e.g., via a mobile phone. However, such devices only provide sparse(limited speckles in structured light system) and noisy 3D data which can not support face recognition directly. In this paper, we aim at achieving high-performance face recognition for devices equipped with such modules which is …

Point cloud-based large scale place recognition is fundamental for many applications like Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Although many models have been proposed and have achieved good performance by learning short-range local features, long-range contextual properties have often been neglected. Moreover, the model size has also become a bottleneck for their wide applications. To overcome these challenges, we propose a super light-weight network model termed SVT-Net for large scale place recognition. Specifically, on top of the highly efficient 3D Sparse Convolution (SP-Conv), an…

Three-dimensional (3D) object recognition is crucial for intelligent autonomous agents such as autonomous vehicles and robots alike to operate effectively in unstructured environments. Most state-of-art approaches rely on relatively dense point clouds and performance drops significantly for sparse point clouds. Unsupervised domain adaption allows to minimise the discrepancy between dense and sparse point clouds with minimal unlabelled sparse point clouds, thereby saving additional sparse data collection, annotation and retraining costs. In this work, we propose a novel method for point cloud b…
Hyperspectral imaging systems collect and process information from specific wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum. The fusion of multi-spectral bands in the visible spectrum has been exploited to improve face recognition performance over all the conventional broad band face images. In this book chapter, we propose a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) framework which adopts a structural sparsity learning technique to select the optimal spectral bands to obtain the best face recognition performance over all of the spectral bands. Specifically, in this method, images from all bands …
Face recognition is the very significant field in pattern recognition area. It has multiple applications in military and finance, to name a few. In this paper, the combination of the sparse PCA with the nearest-neighbor method (and with the kernel ridge regression method) will be proposed and will be applied to solve the face recognition problem. Experimental results illustrate that the accuracy of the combination of the sparse PCA method (using the proximal gradient method and the FISTA method) and one specific classification system may be lower than the accuracy of the combination of the PCA…

The detection and tracking of human landmarks in video streams has gained in reliability partly due to the availability of affordable RGB-D sensors. The analysis of such time-varying geometric data is playing an important role in the automatic human behavior understanding. However, suitable shape representations as well as their temporal evolution, termed trajectories, often lie to nonlinear manifolds. This puts an additional constraint (i.e., nonlinearity) in using conventional Machine Learning techniques. As a solution, this paper accommodates the well-known Sparse Coding and Dictionary Lear…

Fine-grained action segmentation and recognition is an important yet challenging task. Given a long, untrimmed sequence of kinematic data, the task is to classify the action at each time frame and segment the time series into the correct sequence of actions. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that combines a temporal Conditional Random Field (CRF) model with a powerful frame-level representation based on discriminative sparse coding. We introduce an end-to-end algorithm for jointly learning the weights of the CRF model, which include action classification and action transition costs, …
Transformers have sprung up in the field of computer vision. In this work, we explore whether the core self-attention module in Transformer is the key to achieving excellent performance in image recognition. To this end, we build an attention-free network called sMLPNet based on the existing MLP-based vision models. Specifically, we replace the MLP module in the token-mixing step with a novel sparse MLP (sMLP) module. For 2D image tokens, sMLP applies 1D MLP along the axial directions and the parameters are shared among rows or columns. By sparse connection and weight sharing, sMLP module sign…

Despite strong empirical performance for image classification, deep neural networks are often regarded as ``black boxes'' and they are difficult to interpret. On the other hand, sparse convolutional models, which assume that a signal can be expressed by a linear combination of a few elements from a convolutional dictionary, are powerful tools for analyzing natural images with good theoretical interpretability and biological plausibility. However, such principled models have not demonstrated competitive performance when compared with empirically designed deep networks. This paper revisits the s…

Sparse coding has been proposed as a theory of visual cortex and as an unsupervised algorithm for learning representations. We show empirically with the MNIST dataset that sparse codes can be very sensitive to image distortions, a behavior that may hinder invariant object recognition. A locally linear analysis suggests that the sensitivity is due to the existence of linear combinations of active dictionary elements with high cancellation. A nearest neighbor classifier is shown to perform worse on sparse codes than original images. For a linear classifier with a sufficiently large number of lab…

Feature representation in the form of spatio-spectral decomposition is one of the robust techniques adopted in automatic handwritten character recognition systems. In this regard, we propose a new image representation approach for unconstrained handwritten alphanumeric characters using sparse concept coded Tetrolets. Tetrolets, which does not use fixed dyadic square blocks for spectral decomposition like conventional wavelets, preserve the localized variations in handwritings by adopting tetrominoes those capture the shape geometry. Sparse representation-based classification (SRC) has been shown to achieve a high level of accuracy in face recognition (FR). However, matching faces captured in unconstrained video against a gallery with a single reference facial still per individual typically yields low accuracy. For improved robustness to intra-class variations, SRC techniques for FR have recently been extended to incorporate variational information from an external generic set into an auxiliary dictionary. Despite their success in handling linear variations, non-linear variations (e.g., pose and expressions) between probe …

Current state-of-the-art methods for skeleton-based action recognition are supervised and rely on labels. The reliance is limiting the performance due to the challenges involved in annotation and mislabeled data. Unsupervised methods have been introduced, however, they organize sequences into clusters and still require labels to associate clusters with actions. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for skeleton-based action recognition, called SESAR, that connects these approaches. SESAR leverages the information from both unlabeled data and a handful of sequences actively selected for la…
