We address the superconducting singlet state of anisotropic Dirac fermions that disperse linearly in one direction and parabolically in the other. For systems that have uniaxial anisotropy, we show that the electromagnetic response to an external magnetic flux is extremely anisotropic near the quantum critical point of the superconducting order. In the quantum critical regime and above a critical magnetic field, we show that the superconductor may form a novel exotic smectic state, with a stripe pattern of flux domains.
In the presence of certain symmetries, three-dimensional Dirac semimetals can harbor not only surface Fermi arcs, but also surface Dirac cones. Motivated by the experimental observation of rotation-symmetry-protected Dirac semimetal states in iron-based superconductors, we investigate the potential intrinsic topological phases in a $C_{4z}$-rotational invariant superconducting Dirac semimetal with $s_{\pm}$-wave pairing. When the normal state harbors only surface Fermi arcs on the side surfaces, we find that an interesting gapped superconducting state with a quartet of Bogoliubov-Dirac cones o…
Dirac electrons in solids show characteristic physical properties due to their linear dispersion relation and two-band nature. Although the transport phenomena of Dirac electrons in a normal state have intensively been studied, the transport phenomena in a superconducting state have not been fully understood. In particular, it is not clear whether Dirac electrons in a superconducting state show Meissner effect (ME), since a diamagnetic term of a current operator is absent as a result of the linear dispersion. We investigate the ME of three dimensional massive Dirac electrons in a superconducti…
We investigate Dirac fermions in the antifferomagnetic metallic state of iron-based superconduc- tors. Deriving an effective Hamiltonian for Dirac fermions, we reveal that there exist two Dirac cones carrying the same chirality, contrary to graphene, compensated by a Fermi surface with a quadratic energy dispersion as a consequence of a non-trivial topological property inherent in the band structure. We also find that the presence of the Dirac fermions gives the difference of sign- change temperatures between the Hall coefficient and the thermopower. This is consistent with available experimen…
Semi-Dirac fermions are known to exist at the critical points of topological phase transitions requiring fine-tuning of the parameters. We show that robust semi-Dirac points can appear in a heterostructure consisting of superconducting Sr2IrO4 and a t2g electron system (t2g-ES) without fine-tuning. They are topologically stable in the presence of the symmetries of the model, metallic t2g-ES and a single active band in Sr2IrO4. If the t2g metal is coupled to two different layers of Sr2IrO4 (effectively a multiband superconductor) in a three-layer-structure the semi-Dirac points can split into t…
We study the vortex bound states in three dimensional (3D) superconducting Dirac semimetals with time reversal symmetry. Assuming two Dirac points on the kz-axis and bulk s-wave superconductivity, with a quantum vortex line parallel to the z-direction, we find that the superconducting vortex line has a robust quasi-1D nodal phase. The nodal phase stems from the symmetry protected Dirac points in the normal state bands, and it can be characterized by a topological index (ν; n) at kz = 0 and kz = π, where νis the Z2 topological invariant for a 0D class-D system and n is the Z topological invaria…
The Dirac semimetal PdTe${}_2$ becomes superconducting at a temperature $T_{c}=1.6$~K. Thermodynamic and muon spin rotation experiments support type-I superconductivity, which is unusual for a binary compound. A key property of a type-I superconductor is the intermediate state which presents a coexistence of superconducting and normal domains (flux structures) at magnetic fields lower than the thermodynamic critical field $H_{c}$. By means of scanning SQUID microscopy (SSM) we observe flux structures in the superconducting state of PdTe${}_2$. The flux structures are strongly history dependent…
We find that singlet superconducting pairing can lead to Majorana fermions in three dimensional Dirac superconductors (3DDS) if the pairing order parameter is a pseudo-scalar, i.e. it changes sign under mirror reflection. The pseudo-scalar superconducting order parameter, $Δ_5$ can close and reopen the spectral gap caused by the scalar Dirac mass $m$ in a three-dimensional Dirac material (3DDM), giving rise to a two-dimensional Majorana sea (2DMS) at the plane of the gap kink. By bringing the Hamiltonian into a canonical form which then gives the winding number, we show that this system belong…
The signatures of topological superconductivity (TSC) in the superconducting materials with topological nontrivial states prompt intensive researches recently. Utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate multiple Dirac fermions and surface states in superconductor BaSn$_3$ with a critical transition temperature of about 4.4 K. We predict and then unveil the existence of two pairs of type-\uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral1} topological Dirac fermions residing on the rotational axis. Type-\uppercase\expandafter{\romannu…
We study theoretically a strongly type-II s-wave superconducting state of two-dimensional Dirac fermions in proximity to a ferromagnet having in-plane magnetization. It is shown that a magnetic domain wall can host a chain of equally spaced vortices in the superconducting order parameter, each of which binds a Majorana fermion state. The overlap integral of neighboring Majorana states is sensitive to the position of the chemical potential of the Dirac fermions. This leads to a characteristic V-shaped dependence of thermal conductivity of Majorana fermions on the chemical potential.
Topological superconductors are an intriguing and elusive quantum phase, characterized by topologically protected gapless surface/edge states residing in a bulk superconducting gap, which hosts Majorana fermions. Unfortunately, all currently known topological superconductors have a very low transition temperature, limiting experimental measurements of Majorana fermions. Here we discover the existence of a topological Dirac-nodal-line state in a well-known conventional high-temperature superconductor, MgB2. First-principles calculations show that the Dirac-nodal-line structure exhibits a unique…
Physics of topological materials have attracted much attention from both physicists and mathematicians recently. The index and the fermion number of Dirac fermions play an important role in topological insulators and topological superconductors. A zero-energy mode exists when Dirac fermions couple to objects with soliton-like structure such as kinks, vortices, monopoles, strings and branes. We discuss a system of Dirac fermions interacting with a vortex and a kink. This kind of systems will be realized on the surface of topological insulators where Dirac fermions exist. The fermion number is f…
Dirac semimetals host bulk band-touching Dirac points and a surface Fermi loop. We develop a theory of superconducting Dirac semimetals. Establishing a relation between the Dirac points and the surface Fermi loop, we clarify how the nontrivial topology of Dirac semimetals affects their superconducting state. We note that the unique orbital texture of Dirac points and a structural phase transition of the crystal favor symmetry-protected topological superconductivity with a quartet of surface Majorana fermions. We suggest possible application of our theory to recently discovered superconducting …
Topological superconductors classified as type D admit zero-energy Majorana fermions inside vortex cores, and consequently the exchange statistics of vortices becomes non-Abelian, giving a promising example of non-Abelian anyons. On the other hand, types C and DIII admit zero-energy Dirac fermions inside vortex cores. It has been long believed that an essential condition for the realization of non-Abelian statistics is non-locality of Dirac fermions made of two Majorana fermions trapped inside two well-separated vortices as in the case of type D. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, however, …
The interplay between topological electronic structure and superconductivity has attracted tremendous research interests recently as they could induce topological superconductivity (TSCs) which may be used to realize topological qubits for quantum computation. Among various TSC candidates, superconducting BaSn3 (Tc ~ 4.4 K) has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) hosting two pairs of Dirac points along the G - A direction. Here, by combining the use of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we identified the predicted topological Dirac fermio…
We investigate the vortex bound states both Schrodinger and Dirac Hamiltonian with the s-wave superconducting pairing gap by solving the mean-field Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations. The exact vortex bound states spectrum is numerically determined by the integration method, and also accompanied by the quasi-classical analysis. It is found that the bound state energies is proportional to the vortex angular momentum when the chemical potential is large enough. By applying the external magnetic field, the vortex bound state energies of the Dirac Hamiltonian are almost unchanged; whereas the energy s…
We investigate the competition between the superconducting and the excitonic phases on Dirac electrons on a bipartite planar lattice. The conditions for the appearance of superconductivity or excitonic condensate are given by the minima of the free energy and our results are explained.
We extend our previous analysis on the exchange statistics of vortices having a single Dirac fermion trapped in each core, to the case where vortices trap two Dirac fermions with U(2) symmetry. Such a system of vortices with non-Abelian Dirac fermions appears in color superconductors at extremely high densities, and in supersymmetric QCD. We show that the exchange of two vortices having doublet Dirac fermions in each core is expressed by non-Abelian representations of a braid group, which is explicitly verified in the matrix representation of the exchange operators when the number of vortices …
Supersymmetry plays a crucial role in superstring theory and high-energy physics, but has never been observed in experiments. Recently, an effective space-time supersymmetry was argued to emerge in the low-energy region by tuning Dirac or Weyl semimetal to approach a superconducting quantum critical point, at which the Dirac or Weyl fermion and the bosonic order parameter are both massless. Here, we study under what circumstances can space-time supersymmetry be realized at a quantum critical point. We demonstrate that the Yukawa-type coupling between the massless fermion and massless boson can…
Time-reversal invariant (TRI) Dirac and Weyl semimetals in three dimensions (3D) can host open Fermi arcs and spin-momentum locking Fermi loops on the surfaces. We find that when they become superconducting with $s$-wave pairing and the doping is lower than a critical level, straight $π$-flux vortex lines terminating at surfaces with Fermi arcs or spin-momentum locking Fermi loops can realize 1D topological superconductivity and harbor Majorana zero modes at their ends. Remarkably, we find that the vortex-generation-associated Zeeman field can open (when the surfaces have only Fermi arcs) or e…
The low energy quasiparticle dispersion of various narrow gap and gapless semiconductors are respectively described by three dimensional massive and massless Dirac fermions. The three dimensional Dirac spinor structure admits a time-reversal invariant, odd parity and Lorentz pseudoscalar topological superconducting state. Here we derive the effective field theory of this topological paired state for massless Dirac fermions in the presence of a fluctuating Zeeman term, which appears as a chiral gauge field. The effective theory consists of a mixed electromagnetic and chiral anomaly term in the …
