In this paper, we answer two questions on local $h$-vectors, which were asked by Athanasiadis. First, we characterize all possible local $h$-vectors of quasi-geometric subdivisions of a simplex. Second, we prove that the local $γ$-vector of the barycentric subdivision of any CW-regular subdivision of a simplex is nonnegative. Along the way, we derive a new recurrence formula for the derangement polynomials.
The lth partial barycentric subdivision is defined for a (d-1)-dimensional simplicial complex Δand studied along with its combinatorial, geometric and algebraic aspects. We analyze the behavior of the f- and h-vector under the lth partial barycentric subdivision extending previous work of Brenti and Welker on the standard barycentric subdivision -- the case l = 1. We discuss and provide properties of the transformation matrices sending the f- and h-vector of Δto the f- and h-vector of its lth partial barycentric subdivision. We conclude with open problems.
The $h$-polynomial of the barycentric subdivision of any $n$-dimensional cubical complex with nonnegative cubical $h$-vector is shown to have only real roots and to be interlaced by the Eulerian polynomial of type $B_n$. This result applies to barycentric subdivisions of shellable cubical complexes and, in particular, to barycentric subdivisions of cubical convex polytopes and answers affirmatively a question of Brenti, Mohammadi and Welker.
The cubical barycentric subdivision sd_c(K) of a cubical complex K is introduced as an analogue of the barycentric subdivision of a simplicial complex. Explicit formulas for the short and long cubical h-vector of sd_c(K) are given, in terms of those of K. It is deduced that symmetry and nonnegativity of these h-vectors, as well as real rootedness of the short cubical h-polynomial, are preserved under cubical barycentric subdivision. The asymptotic behavior of the short and long cubical h-vectors of successive cubical barycentric subdivisions of K is also determined.
A classical question in PL topology, asked among others by Hudson, Lickorish, and Kirby, is whether every linear subdivision of the d-simplex is simplicially collapsible. The answer is known to be positive for d<4. We solve the problem up to one subdivision, by proving that any linear subdivision of any polytope is simplicially collapsible after at most one barycentric subdivision. Furthermore, we prove that any linear subdivision of any star-shaped polyhedron in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is simplicially collapsible after d-2 derived subdivisions at most. This presents progress on an old question by Good…
We study the limiting behavior of the zeros of the zeta series of a finite poset under iterated barycentric subdivision, and we indicate the possibility of its application to number theory.
We prove that the $γ$-vector of the barycentric subdivision of a simplicial sphere is the $f$-vector of a balanced simplicial complex. The combinatorial basis for this work is the study of certain refinements of Eulerian numbers used by Brenti and Welker to describe the $h$-vector of the barycentric subdivision of a boolean complex.
The derangement polynomial for the symmetric group enumerates derangements by the number of excedances. It can be interpreted as the local $h$-polynomial, in the sense of Stanley, of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex. Motivated by this interpretation, we define a derangement polynomial for the even-signed permutation group. The coefficients of this polynomial are nonnegative, symmetric and unimodal. We show that they enumerate derangements in the even-signed permutation group according to a notion of excedance, which is analogous to the one introduced by Brenti for signed permutations…
Let $F$ be a discrete Morse function on a simplicial complex $L$. We construct a discrete Morse function $Δ(F)$ on the barycentric subdivision $Δ(L)$. The constructed function $Δ(F)$ "behaves the same way" as $F$, i. e. has the same number of critical simplexes and the same gradient path structure.
We show that an 'almost strong Lefschetz' property holds for the barycentric subdivision of a shellable complex. From this we conclude that for the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen-Macaulay complex, the $h$-vector is unimodal, peaks in its middle degree (one of them if the dimension of the complex is even), and that its $g$-vector is an $M$-sequence. In particular, the (combinatorial) $g$-conjecture is verified for barycentric subdivisions of homology spheres. In addition, using the above algebraic result, we derive new inequalities on a refinement of the Eulerian statistics on permutations,…
For a simplicial complex $Δ$ we study the effect of barycentric subdivision on ring theoretic invariants of its Stanley-Reisner ring. In particular, for Stanley-Reisner rings of barycentric subdivisions we verify a conjecture by Huneke and Herzog & Srinivasan, that relates the multiplicity of a standard graded $k$-algebra to the product of the maximal and minimal shifts in its minimal free resolution up to the height. On the way to proving the conjecture we develop new and list well known results on behavior of dimension, Hilbert series, multiplicity, local cohomology, depth and regularity whe…

For a simplicial complex or more generally Boolean cell complex $Δ$ we study the behavior of the $f$- and $h$-vector under barycentric subdivision. We show that if $Δ$ has a non-negative $h$-vector then the $h$-polynomial of its barycentric subdivision has only simple and real zeros. As a consequence this implies a strong version of the Charney-Davis conjecture for spheres that are the subdivision of a Boolean cell complex. For a general $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ the $h$-polynomial of its $n$-th iterated subdivision shows convergent behavior. More precisely, we show that among…

The coefficients of the local $h$-polynomial of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex with $n$ vertices are known to count derangements in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ by the number of excedances. A generalization of this interpretation is given for the local $h$-polynomial of the $r$th edgewise subdivision of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex. This polynomial is shown to be $γ$-nonnegative and a combinatorial interpretation to the corresponding $γ$-coefficients is provided. The new combinatorial interpretations involve the notions of flag excedance and descent in the wre…
Brenti and Welker have shown that for any simplicial complex X, the face vectors of successive barycentric subdivisions of X have roots which converge to fixed values depending only on the dimension of X. We improve and generalize this result here. We begin with an alternative proof based on geometric intuition. We then prove an interesting symmetry of these roots about the real number -2. This symmetry can be seen via a nice algebraic realization of barycentric subdivision as a simple map on formal power series in two variables. Finally, we use this algebraic machinery with some geometric mot…
Inspired by recent results of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Erman and Zhou on the non-vanishing of Betti numbers of high Veronese subrings, we describe the behaviour of the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with iterated barycentric or edgewise subdivisions of a given simplicial complex. Our results show that for a simplicial complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ and for $1\leq j\leq d-1$ the number of $0$'s the j-th linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the r-th barycentric or edgewise subdivision is bounded above only in terms of $d$ and $j$ (and independently of $r$).
The cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$ is an abstract simplicial complex, introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky for a finite root system $Φ$. The positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ naturally defines a simplicial subdivision of the simplex on the vertex set of simple roots of $Φ$. The local $h$-vector of this subdivision, in the sense of Stanley, is computed and the corresponding $γ$-vector is shown to be nonnegative. Combinatorial interpretations to the entries of the local $h$-vector and the corresponding $γ$-vector are provided for the classical root systems, in terms of noncrossing partitions of types $A$ and $B$. A…
For a poset $P$ and an integer $r\geq 1$, let $P_r$ be a collection of all $r$-multichains in $P$. Corresponding to each strictly increasing map $ı:[r]\rightarrow [2r]$, there is an order $\preceq_ı$ on $P_r$. Let $\D(G_ı(P_r))$ be the clique complex of the graph $G_ı$ associated to $P_r$ and $ı$. In a recent paper \cite{NW}, it is shown that $\D(G_ı(P_r))$ is a subdivision of $P$ for a class of strictly increasing maps. In this paper, we show that all these subdivisions have the same $f$-vector. We give an explicit description of the transformation matrices from the $f$- and $h$-vectors of $Δ…
We introduce canonical measures on a locally finite simplicial complex $K$ and study their asymptotic behavior under infinitely many barycentric subdivisions. We also compute the face polynomial of the asymptotic link and dual block of a simplex in the $d^{th}$ barycentric subdivision $Sd^d(K)$ of $K$, $d\gg0$. It is almost everywhere constant. When $K$ is finite, we study the limit face polynomial of $Sd^d(K)$ after F.Brenti-V.Welker and E.Delucchi-A.Pixton-L.Sabalka.
In geometric, algebraic, and topological combinatorics, the unimodality of combinatorial generating polynomials is frequently studied. Unimodality follows when the polynomial is (real) stable, a property often deduced via the theory of interlacing polynomials. Many of the open questions on stability and unimodality of polynomials pertain to the enumeration of faces of cell complexes. In this paper, we relate the theory of interlacing polynomials to the shellability of cell complexes. We first derive a sufficient condition for stability of the $h$-polynomial of a subdivision of a shellable comp…
Let $K$ be a finite simplicial complex. We prove that the normalized expected Betti numbers of a random subcomplex in its $d$-th barycentric subdivision $\text{Sd}^d (K)$ converge to universal limits as $d$ grows to $+ \infty$. In codimension one, we use canonical filtrations of $\text{Sd}^d (K)$ to upper estimate these limits and get a monotony theorem which makes it possible to improve these estimates given any packing of disjoint simplices in $\text{Sd}^d (K)$. We then introduce a notion of tiling of simplicial complexes having the property that skeletons and barycentric subdivisions of til…
In this paper, we define a ternary graph operation which generalizes the construction of subdivision graph, $R-$graph, central graph. Also, it generalizes the construction of overlay graph (Marius Somodi \emph{et al.}, 2017), and consequently, $Q-$graph, total graph, and quasitotal graph. We denote this new graph by $[S(G)]^{H_1}_{H_2}$, where $G$ is a graph and, $H_1$ and $H_2$ are suitable graphs corresponding to $G$. Further, we define several new unary graph operations which becomes particular cases of this construction. We determine the Adjacency and Laplacian spectra of $[S(G)]^{H_1}_{H_…
We show that any two geometric triangulations of a closed hyperbolic, spherical or Euclidean manifold are related by a sequence of Pachner moves and barycentric subdivisions of bounded length. This bound is in terms of the dimension of the manifold, the number of top dimensional simplexes and bound on the lengths of edges of the triangulation. This leads to an algorithm to check from the combinatorics of the triangulation and bounds on lengths of edges, if two geometrically triangulated closed hyperbolic or low dimensional spherical manifolds are isometric or not.
