Refocalization sequences in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) can in principle reverse the coherent evolution under the secular dipolar Hamiltonian of a closed system. We use this experimental strategy to study the effect of irreversible decoherence on the signal amplitude attenuation in a single crystal hydrated salt where the nuclear spin system consists in the set of hydration water proton spins having a strong coupling within each pair and a much weaker coupling with other pairs. We study the experimental response of attenuation times with temperature, crystal orientation with respect to the external magnetic field and rf pulse amplitudes. We find that the observed attenuation of the refocalized signals can be explained by two independent mechanisms: (a) evolution under the non-secular terms of the reversion Hamiltonian, and (b) an intrinsic mechanism having the attributes of irreversible decoherence induced by the coupling with a quantum environment. To characterize (a) we compare the experimental data with the numerical calculation of the refocalized NMR signal of an artificial, closed spin system. To describe (b) we use a model for the irreversible adiabatic decoherence of spin-pairs coupled with a phonon bath which allows evaluating an upper bound for the decoherence times. This model accounts for both the observed dependence of the decoherence times on the eigenvalues of the spin-environment Hamiltonian, and the independence on the sample temperature. This result, then, supports the adiabatic decoherence induced by the dipole-phonon coupling as the explanation for the observed irreversible decay of reverted NMR signals in solids.
A wide-ranging theory of decoherence is derived from the quantum theory of irreversible processes, with specific results having for their main limitation the assumption of an exact pointer basis.
Remarks regarding a novel decoherence mechanism [arXiv:1311.1095]. According to this model by itself, "real" (that is, irreversible) decoherence would require some initially present entanglement with the environment.
We study the dynamics of a spin coupled to an oscillating magnetic field, in the presence of decoherence and dissipation. In this context we solve the master equation for the Landau-Zener problem, both in the unitary and in the irreversible case. We show that a single spin can be "magnetized" in the direction parallel to the oscillating bias. When decay from upper to lower level is taken into account, hysteretic behavior is obtained.
In this paper we study the decoherence and purity of a driven solid-state qubit in the Ohmic bath by using the method based on the master equation. At first, instead of solving the master equation we investigate the coefficients of the equation which describe the shift in frequency, diffusive, decoherence, and so on. It is shown that one of the coefficients (we called it decoherence coefficient) is crucial to the decoherence of the qubit in the model. Then we investigate the evolution of the purity of the state in the model. From the analysis of the purity we see that the decoherence time of t…
A low temperature model system consisting of a central spin coupled to a spin-bath is studied to determine whether interaction among bath spins has an effect on central spin dynamics. In the absence of intra-environmental coupling, decoherence of the central spin is fast and irreversible. Strong intra-environmental interaction results in an effective decoupling of the central spin from the bath and suppression of decoherence. Weaker intra-environmental coupling reduces but does not eliminate decoherence. We believe that similar behaviour will be observed in any system with a self-interacting e…
We report on the application of a dynamic decoherence control pulse sequence on a nuclear quadrupole transition in $Pr^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5$ . Process tomography is used to analyse the effect of the pulse sequence. The pulse sequence was found to increase the decoherence time of the transition to over 30 seconds. Although the decoherence time was significantly increased, the population terms were found to rapidly decay on the application of the pulse sequence. The increase of this decay rate is attributed to inhomogeneity in the ensemble. Methods to circumvent this limit are discussed.
We propose a decoherence-free subspaces (DFS) scheme to realize scalable quantum computation with trapped ions. The spin-dependent Coulomb interaction is exploited, and the universal set of unconventional geometric quantum gates is achieved in encoded subspaces that are immune from decoherence by collective dephasing. The scalability of the scheme for the ion array system is demonstrated, either by an adiabatic way of switching on and off the interactions, or by a fast gate scheme with comprehensive DFS encoding and noise decoupling techniques.
It is discussed the decoherence problems in ensemble large-scale solid state NMR quantum computer based on the array of P donor atoms having nuclear spin I = 1/2. It is considered here, as main mechanisms of decoherence for low temperature (< 0.1 K), the adiabatic processes of random modulation of qubit resonance frequency determined by secular part of nuclear spin interaction with electron spin of the basic atoms, with impurity paramagnetic atoms and also with nuclear spins of impurity diamagnetic atoms. It was made estimations of allowed concentrations of magnetic impurities and of spin temp…
We examine a stochastic noise process that has a decohering effect on the average evolution of qubits in the quantum register of the solid state quantum computer proposed by Kane. We consider the effects of this process on the single qubit operations necessary to perform quantum logical gates and derive an expression for the fidelity of these gates in this system. We then calculate an upper bound on the level of this stochastic noise tolerable in a workable quantum computer.
We experimentally demonstrate room-temperature storage of quantum entanglement using two nuclear spins weakly coupled to the electronic spin carried by a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. We realize universal quantum gate control over the three-qubit spin system and produce entangled states encoded within the decoherence-free subspace of the two nuclear spins. By injecting arbitrary collective noise, we demonstrate that the decoherence-free entangled state has coherence time longer than that of other entangled states by an order of magnitude in our experiment.
We discuss the operational definition of decoherence in various solid state systems. In particular, we review, in the context of spin-based solid state quantum computation, the introduction of $T_1$ and $T_2$ to describe decoherence in a two level system. We provide a perspective on recent experiments involving the manipulation of spin coherence in semiconductors, and discuss specific decoherence and dephasing issues in electron spin-based quantum dot quantum computer architectures.
We present and discuss a general density-matrix description of energy-dissipation and decoherence phenomena in open quantum systems, able to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the conventional Markov approximation. In particular, the proposed alternative adiabatic scheme does not threaten positivity at any time. The key idea of our approach rests in the temporal symmetrization and coarse graining of the scattering term in the Liouville-von Neumann equation, before applying the reduction procedure over the environment degrees of freedom. The resulting dynamics is genuinely Lindblad-like and …
Canonical coupling between classical and quantum systems cannot result in reversible equations, rather it leads to irreversible master equations. Coupling of quantized non-relativistic matter to gravity is illustrated by a simplistic example. The heuristic derivation yields the theory of gravity-related decoherence proposed longtime ago by Penrose and the author.
We considered the interaction of semiconductor quantum register with noisy environment leading to various types of qubit errors. We analysed both phase and amplitude decays during the process of electron-phonon interaction. The performance of quantum error correction codes (QECC) which will be inevitably used in full scale quantum information processors was studied in realistic conditions in semiconductor nanostructures. As a hardware basis for quantum bit we chose the quantum spatial states of single electron in semiconductor coupled double quantum dot system. The modified 5- and 9-qubit quan…
We employ spherical $t$-designs for the systematic construction of solids whose rotational degrees of freedom can be made robust to decoherence due to external fluctuating fields while simultaneously retaining their sensitivity to signals of interest. Specifically, the ratio of signal phase accumulation rate from a nearby source to the decoherence rate caused by fluctuating fields from more distant sources can be incremented to any desired level by using increasingly complex shapes. This allows for the generation of long-lived macroscopic quantum superpositions of rotational degrees of freedom…

Proposals for scalable quantum computing devices suffer not only from decoherence due to the interaction with their environment, but also from severe engineering constraints. Here we introduce a practical solution to these major concerns, addressing solid state proposals in particular. Decoherence is first reduced by encoding a logical qubit into two qubits, then completely eliminated by an efficient set of decoupling pulse sequences. The same encoding removes the need for single-qubit operations, that pose a difficult design constraint. We further show how the dominant decoherence processes c…
The interaction between solid-state qubits and their environmental degrees of freedom produces non-unitary effects like decoherence and dissipation. Uncontrolled decoherence is one of the main obstacles that must be overcome in quantum information processing. We study the dynamically decay of coherences in a solid-state qubit by means of the use of a master equation. We analyse the effects induced by thermal Ohmic environments and low-frequency 1/f noise. We focus on the effect of longitudinal and transversal noise on the superconducting qubit's dynamics. Our results can be used to design expe…
We give a pedagogical introduction to the process of decoherence - the irreversible emergence of classical properties through interaction with the environment. After discussing the general concepts, we present the following examples: Localisation of objects, quantum Zeno effect, classicality of fields and charges in QED, and decoherence in gravity theory. We finally emphasise the important interpretational features of decoherence.
Interaction of solid state qubits with environmental degrees of freedom strongly affects the qubit dynamics, and leads to decoherence. In quantum information processing with solid state qubits, decoherence significantly limits the performances of such devices. Therefore, it is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms that lead to decoherence. In this review we discuss how decoherence affects two of the most successful realizations of solid state qubits, namely, spin-qubits and superconducting qubits. In the former, the qubit is encoded in the spin 1/2 of the electron, and it is implemented…
We investigate the decoherence process for a quantum register composed of N qubits coupled to an environment. We consider an environment composed of one common phonon bath and several electronic baths. This environment is relevant to the implementation of a charge based solid-state quantum computer. We explicitly compute the time evolution of all off-diagonal terms of the register's reduced density matrix. We find that in realistic configurations, "superdecoherence" and "decoherence free subspaces" do not exist for an N-qubit system. This means that all off-diagonal terms decay like exp(-q(t)N…
Dressed spin states, a spin coupling to continuous radiation fields, can fundamentally change how a spin responds to magnetic fluctuations. Using dressed spin states, we were able to protect an electron spin in diamond from decoherence. Dressing a spin with resonant microwaves at a coupling rate near 1 MHz leads to a 50 times reduction in the linewidth of the spin transition, limited by transit-time broadening. The spin decoherence and the energy level structure of the dressed states were probed with optical coherent-population-trapping processes. Compared with dynamical decoupling, where effe…
Paramagnetic defects in diamond and hexagonal boron nitride possess a unique combination of spin and optical properties that make them prototypical solid-state qubits. Despite the coherence of these spin qubits being critically limited by spin-phonon relaxation, a full understanding of this process is not yet available. Here we apply ab initio spin dynamics simulations to this problem and quantitatively reproduce the experimental temperature dependence of spin relaxation time and spin coherence time. We demonstrate that low-frequency two-phonon modulations of the zero-field splitting are respo…
As an ensemble scheme of solid-state NMR quantum computers the extension of Kane's many-qubits silicon scheme based on the array of 31 P donor atoms are spaced lengthwise of the strip gates is considered. The possible planar topology of such ensemble quantum computer is suggested. The estimation of the output NMR signal was performed and it was shown that for the number N>=10^5 of ensemble elements involving L~10^3 qubits each, the standard NMR methods are usable. As main mechanisms of decoherence for low temperature (<0.1K), the adiabatic processes of random modulation of qubit resonance freq…
In this work we experimentally study the efficiency of various dynamical decoupling sequences for suppressing decoherence of single as well as multiple quantum coherences on large spin-clusters. The system involves crystallites of a powdered sample containing a large number of molecular protons interacting via long-range dipole-dipole interaction. The multiple quantum coherences are prepared by progressively creating correlations in the spin lattice using standard pulse sequences implementing two-quantum average Hamiltonian. The spin system is then subjected to various dynamical decoupling seq…
Solid state quantum bits are promising candidates for the realization of a {\em scalable} quantum computer. However, they are usually strongly limited by decoherence due to the many extra degrees of freedom of a solid state system. We investigate a system of two solid state qubits that are coupled via $σ_z^{(i)} \otimes σ_z^{(j)}$ type of coupling. This kind of setup is typical for {\em pseudospin} solid-state quantum bits such as charge or flux systems. We evaluate decoherence properties and gate quality factors in the presence of a common and two uncorrelated baths coupling to $σ_z$, respect…
Broadband noise represents a severe limitation towards the implementation of a solid-state quantum information processor. Considering common spectral forms, we propose a classification of noise sources based on the effects produced instead of on their microscopic origin. We illustrate a multi-stage approach to broadband noise which systematically includes only the relevant information on the environment, out of the huge parametrization needed for a microscopic description. We apply this technique to a solid-state two-qubit gate in a fixed coupling implementation scheme.
Solid-state emitters are excellent candidates for developing integrated sources of single photons. Yet, phonons degrade the photon indistinguishability both through pure dephasing of the zero-phonon line and through phonon-assisted emission. Here, we study theoretically and experimentally the indistinguishability of photons emitted by a semiconductor quantum dot in a microcavity as a function of temperature. We show that a large coupling to a high quality factor cavity can simultaneously reduce the effect of both phonon-induced sources of decoherence. It first limits the effect of pure dephasi…
We consider the decoherence of a single localized electron spin due to its coupling to the lattice nuclear spin bath in a semiconductor quantum computer architecture. In the presence of an external magnetic field and at low temperatures, the dominant decoherence mechanism is the spectral diffusion of the electron spin resonance frequency due to the temporally fluctuating random magnetic field associated with the dipolar interaction induced flip-flops of nuclear spin pairs. The electron spin dephasing due to this random magnetic field depends intricately on the quantum dynamics of the nuclear s…
Decoherence of a solid state based qubit can be caused by coupling to microscopic degrees of freedom in the solid. We lay out a simple theory and use it to estimate decoherence for a recently proposed superconducting persistent current design. All considered sources of decoherence are found to be quite weak, leading to a high quality factor for this qubit.
We study the scaling of decoherence of decoupled electron spin qubits due to hyperfine interaction. For a superposed state consisting of product states from a single Zeeman manifold, both $T_2^*(n)$ and $T_2(n)$ are scale-free with respect to $n$ and the number of basis states, $m$. For a superposed state made up of states from different Zeeman manifolds, both $T_2(n)$ and $T_2^*(n)$ are roughly inversely proportional to $\sqrt{n}$. Our results can be extended to other decoherence mechanisms, including in the presence of dynamical decoupling, which allow meaningful discussions on the scalabili…
The efficient single photon emission capabilities of quantum dot molecules position them as promising platforms for quantum information processing. Furthermore, quantum dot molecules feature a "decoherence-free" subspace that enables spin qubits with long coherence time. To efficiently read out the spin state within this subspace requires optically cycling isolated transitions that originate from a triplet manifold within the quantum dot molecule. We propose and theoretically study a two-stage spin readout protocol within this decoherence-free subspace that allows single-shot readout performan…
Protecting the dynamics of coupled quantum systems from decoherence by the environment is a key challenge for solid-state quantum information processing. An idle qubit can be efficiently insulated from the outside world via dynamical decoupling, as has recently been demonstrated for individual solid-state qubits. However, protection of qubit coherence during a multi-qubit gate poses a non-trivial problem: in general the decoupling disrupts the inter-qubit dynamics, and hence conflicts with gate operation. This problem is particularly salient for hybrid systems, wherein different types of qubit…
We examine the effects of intra-environmental coupling on decoherence by constructing a low temperature spin--spin-bath model of an atomic impurity in a Debye crystal. The impurity interacts with phonons of the crystal through anti-ferromagnetic spin-spin interactions. The reduced density matrix of the central spin representing the impurity is calculated by dynamically integrating the full Schroedinger equation for the spin--spin-bath model for different thermally weighted eigenstates of the spin-bath. Exact numerical results show that increasing the intra-environmental coupling results in sup…
We develop and implement a method for modeling decoherence processes on an N-dimensional quantum system that requires only an $N^2$-dimensional quantum environment and random classical fields. This model offers the advantage that it may be implemented on small quantum information processors in order to explore the intermediate regime between semiclassical and fully quantum models. We consider in particular $σ_zσ_z$ system-environment couplings which induce coherence (phase) damping, though the model is directly extendable to other coupling Hamiltonians. Effective, irreversible phase-damping of…
Entanglement, as a key resource for modern quantum technologies, is extremely fragile due to the decoherence. Here, we show that a quantum autoencoder, which is trained to compress a particular set of quantum entangled states into a subspace that is robust to decoherence, can be employed to preserve entanglement. The training process is based on a hybrid quantum-classical approach to improve the efficiency in building the autoencoder and reduce the experimental errors during the optimization. Using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, we demonstrate that the entangled states between the electr…
Decoherence largely limits the physical realization of qubits and its mitigation is critical to quantum science. Here, we construct a robust qubit embedded in a decoherence-protected subspace, obtained by hybridizing an applied microwave drive with the ground-state electron spin of a silicon carbide divacancy defect. The qubit is protected from magnetic, electric, and temperature fluctuations, which account for nearly all relevant decoherence channels in the solid state. This culminates in an increase of the qubit's inhomogeneous dephasing time by over four orders of magnitude (to > 22 millise…
We investigate the time evolution of entanglement under various models of decoherence: A general heuristic model based on local relaxation and dephasing times, and two microscopic models describing decoherence of electron spin qubits in quantum dots due to the hyperfine interaction with the nuclei. For each of the decoherence models, we investigate and compare how long the entanglement can be detected. We also introduce filtered witness operators, which extend the available detection time, and investigate this detection time for various multipartite entangled states. By comparing the time requ…
We present a study of the prospects for coherence preservation in solid-state spin qubits using dynamical decoupling protocols. Recent experiments have provided the first demonstrations of multipulse dynamical decoupling sequences in this qubit system, but quantitative analyses of potential coherence improvements have been hampered by a lack of concrete knowledge of the relevant noise processes. We present simulations of qubit coherence under the application of arbitrary dynamical decoupling pulse sequences based on an experimentally validated semiclassical model. This phenomenological approac…
Solid-state electronic spin systems such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond are promising for applications of quantum information, sensing, and metrology. However, a key challenge for such solid-state systems is to realize a spin coherence time that is much longer than the time for quantum spin manipulation protocols. Here we demonstrate an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude in the spin coherence time ($T_2$) of NV centers compared to previous measurements: $T_2 \approx 0.5$ s at 77 K, which enables $\sim 10^7$ coherent NV spin manipulations before decoherence. We …
A phenomenological theory of spin-lattice relaxation of multiple-quantum coherences in systems of two dipolar coupled spins at low temperatures is developed. Intensities of multiple-quantum NMR coherences depending on the spin-lattice relaxation time are obtained. It is shown that the theory is also applicable to finite spin chains when the approximation of nearest neighbour interaction is used. An application of this theory to an estimation of the influence of decoherence processes on quantum entanglement and its fluctuations is briefly discussed.
The controlled generation of entangled states of two quantum bits is a fundamental step toward the implementation of a quantum information processor. In nano-devices this operation is counteracted by the solid-state environment, characterized by a broadband and non-monotonic power spectrum, often 1/f at low frequencies. For single-qubit gates, incoherent processes due to fluctuations acting on different time scales result in peculiar short- and long-time behavior. Markovian noise gives rise to exponential decay with relaxation and decoherence times, T1 and T2, simply related to the symmetry of…
Nuclear spins are promising candidates for quantum information processing because their good isolation from the environment precludes the rapid loss of quantum coherence. Many strategies have been developed to further extend their decoherence times. Some of them make use of decoupling techniques based on the Carr-Purcell and Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill pulse sequences. In many cases, when applied to inhomogeneous samples, they yield a magnetization decay much slower than the Hahn echo. However, we have proved that these decays cannot be associated with longer decoherence times as coherences rema…
Engineering coherent systems is a central goal of quantum science. Color centers in diamond are a promising approach, with the potential to combine the coherence of atoms with the scalability of a solid state platform. However, the solid environment can adversely impact coherence. For example, phonon- mediated spin relaxation can induce spin decoherence, and electric field noise can change the optical transition frequency over time. We report a novel color center with insensitivity to both of these sources of environmental decoherence: the neutral charge state of silicon vacancy (SiV0). Throug…
We investigate decoherence due to pure dephasing of a localized spin qubit interacting with a nuclear spin bath. Although in the limit of a very large magnetic field the only decoherence mechanism is spectral diffusion due to dipolar flip-flops of nuclear spins, with decreasing field the hyperfine-mediated interactions between the nuclear spins become important. We take advantage of their long-range nature, and resum the leading terms in an 1/N expansion of the decoherence time-evolution function (N, being the number of nuclear spins interacting appreciably with the electron spin, is large). F…
We examine an exactly solvable model of decoherence -- a spin-system interacting with a collection of environment spins. We show that in this simple model (introduced some time ago to illustrate environment--induced superselection) generic assumptions about the coupling strengths lead to a universal (Gaussian) suppression of coherence between pointer states. We explore the regime of validity of this result and discuss its relation to spectral features of the environment. We also consider its relevance to the experiments on the so-called Loschmidt echo (which measures, in effect, the fidelity b…
We examine the time evolution of cold atoms (impurities) interacting with an environment consisting of a degenerate bosonic quantum gas. The impurity atoms differ from the environment atoms, being of a different species. This allows one to superimpose two independent trapping potentials, each being effective only on one atomic kind, while transparent to the other. When the environment is homogeneous and the impurities are confined in a potential consisting of a set of double wells, the system can be described in terms of an effective spin-boson model, where the occupation of the left or right …
Many solid-state qubit systems are afflicted by low frequency noise mechanisms that operate along two perpendicular axes of the Bloch sphere. Depending on the qubit's control fields, either noise can be longitudinal or transverse to the qubit's quantization axis, thus affecting its dynamics in distinct ways, generally contributing to decoherence that goes beyond pure dephasing. Here we present a theory that provides a unified platform to study dynamics of a qubit subjected to two perpendicular low-frequency noises (assumed to be Gaussian and uncorrelated) under dynamical decoupling pulse seque…
