In five-dimensional minimal supergravity, there are spherical black holes with nontrivial topology outside the horizon which have the same conserved charges at infinity as the BMPV solution. We show that some of these black holes have greater entropy than the BMPV solution. These spacetimes are all asymptotically flat, stationary, and supersymmetric. We also show that there is a limit in which the black hole shrinks to zero size and the solution becomes a nonsingular "bubbling" geometry. Thus, these solutions provide explicit analytic examples of placing black holes inside solitons.
We prove that any asymptotically flat static spacetime in higher dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory must have no magnetic field. This implies that there are no static soliton spacetimes and completes the classification of static non-extremal black holes in this theory. In particular, these results establish that there are no asymptotically flat static spacetimes with non-trivial topology, with or without a black hole, in Einstein-Maxwell theory.
The Riemann-Hilbert approach to studying solutions of supergravity theories allows us to associate spacetime independent monodromy matrices (matrices in the Geroch group) with solutions that effectively only depend on two spacetime coordinates. This offers insights into symmetries of supergravity theories, and in the classification of their solutions. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of monodromy matrices for multi-center solutions of five-dimensional U(1)$^3$ supergravity. We obtain monodromy matrices for a class of collinear Bena-Warner bubbling geometries. We show that for this…
In this note we construct families of asymptotically flat, smooth, horizonless solutions with a large number of non-trivial two-cycles (bubbles) of N=1 five-dimensional supergravity with an arbitrary number of vector multiplets, which may or may not have the charges of a macroscopic black hole and which contain the known bubbling solutions as a sub-family. We do this by lifting various multi-center BPS states of type IIA compactified on Calabi-Yau three-folds and taking the decompactification (M-theory) limit. We also analyse various properties of these solutions, including the conserved charg…
We study the supersymmetric solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity with a factor of $AdS_2$ made of M2-branes. Such solutions can provide gravity duals of superconformal quantum mechanics, or through double Wick rotation, the generic bubbling geometry of M-theory which are 1/16-BPS. We show that, when the internal manifold is compact, it should take the form of a warped U(1)-fibration over an 8-dimensional Kahler space.
We perform a systematic study, in eleven dimensional supergravity, of the geometry of wrapped brane configurations admitting $AdS_2$ limits. Membranes wrapping holomorphic curves in Calabi-Yau manifolds are found to exhibit some novel features; in particular, for fourfolds or threefolds, the gravitational effect of the branes on the overall transverse space is only weakly restricted by the kinematics of the Killing spinor equation. We also study the $AdS_2$ limits of the wrapped brane supergravity descriptions. For membranes wrapped in a two-fold, we derive a set of $AdS_2$ supersymmetry condi…
We show in this note that the Padmanabhan expression $E = a/2$ for the energy of the Schwarzschild and de Sitter spacetimes (a - the horizon radius) is also valid for the Rindler horizon, using an analogy with the electrostatic case.
It is argued that the main results of the paper of Gibbons and Volkov (Phys. Rev. D {\bf 96}, 024053 (2017)) come from erroneous interpretations of the surface $r=0$ in the Kerr and Kerr-(anti)de Sitter spacetimes.
In the paper Phys. Lett. B614 (2005), 140-142, F. Nasseri shows that the values of the fine structure constant reduces due to the presence of a cosmic string. In this comment I want to point out that this conclusion is not completely correct in the sense that the result obtained is valid only in a very special situation.
We follow the spirit of a recent proposal to show that previous computations for asymptotically flat spacetimes in four dimensions at null infinity can be re-interpreted in terms of a well-defined holographic current algebra for the time component of the currents. The analysis is completed by the current algebra for the spatial components.
Recently, an axially symmetric spacetime with causality violation is appeared in Ref. [1]. There, author presented a type III metric with vanishing expansion, shear and twist. The matter-energy represents a pure radial field with a negative cosmological constant. The spacetime is asymptotically anti-de Sitter space in the radial direction. Actually, this work with different for the metric was already published in Ref. [4]. Therefore, the current paper Ref. [1] is a duplicate one of the previous work.
We analyze the results of a paper on ``Relativistic quantum dynamics of a charged particle in cosmic string spacetime in the presence of magnetic field and scalar potential''. We show that the authors did not obtain the spectrum of the eigenvalue equation but only one eigenvalue for a specific relationship between model parameters. In particular, the existence of allowed cyclotron frequencies conjectured by the authors is a mere artifact of the truncation condition used to obtain exact solutions to the radial eigenvalue equation.
We compute the transition rate of an Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled both to a ground state and to a KMS state of a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on a static BTZ black hole with Robin boundary conditions. We observe that, although the anti-Hawking effect is manifest for the ground state, this is not the case for the KMS state. In addition, we show that our analysis applies with minor modifications also to the anti-Unruh effect on Rindler-AdS$_3$ spacetime.
Balasubramanian, Czech, Chowdhury and de Boer \cite{BCCdB} studied a "spherical Rindler space" and found that accelerating observers are causally disconnected from a spherical region located at the origin of Minkowski space. We show that there is no any horizon of size $R_{0}$ (which is related to the chosen initial conditions) and the event horizon at $r = 0$ is obtained only from the two-dimensional ($r, t$) static restriction. Their near-horizon geometry cancels the time dependence of the original metric and therefore the approximation used is doubtful.
In a recent paper (Phys. Rev. D 94, 125016 (2016)), the authors argued that the singularities of the two-point functions on the Poincaré domain of the $n$-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime ($\text{PAdS}_n$) have the Hadamard form, regardless of which (Robin) boundary condition is chosen at the conformal boundary. However, the argument used to prove this statement was based on an incorrect expression for the two-point function $G^{+}(x,x')$, which was obtained by demanding $\text{AdS}$ invariance for the vacuum state. In this comment I show that their argument works only for Dirichlet and Ne…
We investigate the hidden symmetries of the Kerr-Newman, of the D=5 minimal gauged supergravity which admits a Killing-Maxwell system in the sense of Carter and of higher dimensional spacetimes in the presence of Killing-Yano torsion. We note that when an electromagnetic tensor is present and an associated Killing-Maxwell system can be constructed in the sense of Carter, the Killing- Maxwell field becomes a PCKY (primary conformal Killing-Yano) tensor or a PGCKY (primary generalized conformal Killing-Yano) tensor, the latter in the presence of torsion. We point out the structure of the Dirac-t…
In this Reply, using E.R. Bezerra de Mello's comment, I correct calculations and results presented in Phys. Lett. B 614 (2005) 140-142 about fine structure constant in the spacetime of a cosmic string.
The "conformal mass prescriptions" were used recently to calculate the mass of spacetimes in higher dimensional and higher curvature theories of gravity. These definitions are closely related to Komar integrals for spacetimes that are conformally flat at great distances from the sources. We derive these relations without using the conformal infinity formalism.
The Comment by Amore {\it et al.} [gr-qc/0611029] contains a valid criticism of the numerical precision of the results reported in a recent paper of ours [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 73}, 044022 (2006)], as well as fresh ideas on how to characterize a quantum cosmological singularity. However, we argue that, contrary to what is suggested in the Comment, the quantum cosmological models we studied show hardly any sign of singular behavior.
In this Reply, using G.de.A.Marques' comment, we correct calculations and results presented in [Phys.Lett.B 632(2006) 151-154] about corrections to the fine structure constant in the spacetime of a cosmic string from the generalized uncertainty principle.
In this Letter we make a critique of, and comparison between, the anomaly method and WKB/tunneling method for obtaining radiation from non-trivial spacetime backgrounds. We focus on Rindler spacetime (the spacetime of an accelerating observer) and the associated Unruh radiation since this is the prototype of the phenomena of radiation from a spacetime, and it is the simplest model for making clear subtle points in the tunneling and anomaly methods. Our analysis leads to the following conclusions: (i) neither the consistent and covariant anomaly methods gives the correct Unruh temperature for R…
We study the Regge limit of string amplitudes within the model of Polchinski-Strassler for string scattering in warped spacetimes. We also present some numerical estimations of the Regge slopes. It is quite remarkable that the real values of the slopes are inside a range of ours.
We determine all asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric soliton and black hole solutions to five dimensional minimal supergravity. In particular, we show that the solution must be a multi-centred solution with a Gibbons-Hawking base. The proof involves combining local constraints from supersymmetry with global constraints for stationary and biaxisymmetric spacetimes. This reveals that the horizon topology must be one of S^3, S^1 x S^2 or a lens space L(p,1), thereby providing a refinement of the allowed horizon topologies. We construct the general smooth solution for each possi…
In this note, we attempt to provide some insights into the structure of non-perturbative descriptions of quantum gravity using known examples of gauge-theory / gravity duality. We argue that in familiar examples, a quantum description of spacetime can be associated with a manifold-like structure in which particular patches of spacetime are associated with states or density matrices in specific quantum systems. We argue that quantum entanglement between microscopic degrees of freedom plays an essential role in the emergence of a dual spacetime from the nonperturbative degrees of freedom. In par…
We argue that the recent result of da Rocha and Rodrigues that in two dimensional spacetime the Lagrangian of tetrad gravity is an exact differential [1], despite the claim of the authors, neither proves the Jackiw conjecture [2], nor contradicts to the conclusion of [3]. This demonstrates that the tetrad formulation is different from the metric formulation of the Einstein-Hilbert action.
We show that the six-dimensional uplift of the five-dimensional Near-Horizon-Extremal-Kerr (NHEK) spacetime can be obtained from an AdS_3 X S^3 solution by a sequence of supergravity - but not string theory - dualities. We present three ways of viewing these pseudo-dualities: as a series of transformations in the STU model, as a combination of Melvin twists and T-dualities and, finally, as a sequence of two generalized spectral flows and a coordinate transformation. We then use these to find an infinite family of asymptotically flat embeddings of NHEK spacetimes in string theory, parameterized…
We discuss two ways in which one can study two-charge supertubes as components of generic three-charge, three-dipole charge supergravity solutions. The first is using the Born-Infeld action of the supertubes, and the second is via the complete supergravity solution. Even though the Born-Infeld description is only a probe approximation, we find that it gives exactly the same essential physics as the complete supergravity solution. Since supertubes can depend on arbitrary functions, our analysis strengthens the evidence for the existence of three-charge black-hole microstate geometries that depe…
In this technical note we introduce a manifestly gauge-invariant and supersymmetric procedure to regularize and renormalize one-loop divergences of chiral multiplets in two-dimensional N=(2,2) theories in curved spacetime. We apply the method, a version of Pauli-Villars regularization, to known examples of supersymmetric localization and demonstrate that the partition functions are renormalized. An accompanying ancillary file, a Mathematica notebook, implements the relevant supergravity transformations.
We offer a clarification of the significance of the indicated paper of H. Cheng. Cheng's conclusions about the attractive nature of Casimir forces between parallel plates are valid beyond the particular model in which he derived them; they are likely to be relevant to other recent literature on the effects of hidden dimensions on Casimir forces.
We provide the first example of a geometric transition that resolves the Schwarzschild black hole into a smooth microstructure in eleven-dimensional supergravity on a seven-torus. The geometry is indistinguishable from a Schwarzschild black hole dressed with a scalar field in four dimensions, referred to as a Schwarzschild scalarwall. In eleven dimensions, the scalar field arises as moduli of the torus. The resolution occurs at an infinitesimal scale above the horizon, where it transitions to a smooth bubbling spacetime supported by M2-brane flux.
We summarize our proof that the "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity in Four-Dimensional Spacetime" introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020) does not have consistent field equations, as such the theory does not exist. The proof is given in both the metric and the first order formalisms.
We analyse the power counting renormalizability of scalar theory in Lifshitz spacetime in D+2 dimensions. We show the spectral dimension becomes 2+(D/z) (z is the critical exponent) after integrating out the radion field. We comment on the AdS/CFT correspondence, and on how to avoid the Lifshitz singularity by flowing into AdS spacetime in the infrared. We also comment on the quantum gravity in Lifshitz spacetime.
Certain closed-universe big-bang/big-crunch cosmological spacetimes may be obtained by analytic continuation from asymptotically AdS Euclidean wormholes, as emphasized by Maldacena and Maoz. We investigate how these Euclidean wormhole spacetimes and their associated cosmological physics might be described within the context of AdS/CFT. We point out that a holographic model for cosmology proposed recently in arXiv:1810.10601 can be understood as a specific example of this picture. Based on this example, we suggest key features that should be present in more general examples of this approach to …
We consider the entanglement entropy in the dS/CFT correspondence. In Einstein gravity on de Sitter spacetime we propose the holographic entanglement entropy as the analytic continuation of the extremal surface in Euclidean anti-de Sitter spacetime.Even though dual conformal field theories for Einstein gravity on de Sitter spacetime have not been known yet,we analyzed the free $Sp(N)$ model dual to Vasiliev's higher spin gauge theory as a toy model. In this model we confirmed the behaviour similar to our holographic result from Einstein gravity.
Observables in gravitational systems must be non-local so as to be invariant under diffeomorphism gauge transformations. But at the classical level some such observables can nevertheless satisfy an exact form of microcausality. This property is conjectured to remain true at all orders in the semiclassical expansion, though with limitations at finite $\hbar$ or $\ell_{Planck}$. We also discuss related issues concerning observables in black hole spacetimes and comment on the senses in which they do and do not experience the form of chaos identified by Shenker and Stanford. In particular, in cont…
Saravani, Afshordi and Mann \cite{SAM} considered a surface fluid with vanishing energy density on the stretched horizon of a black hole, taken as the new boundary of spacetime. We show that their entropy per unit area of the fluid does not correspond to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, both for a Schwarzschild black hole and for a Kerr-Newman black hole. Due to the lack of a horizon, we argue that the Unruh effect could not be taken into account and the concept of local thermodynamic equilibrium is not sustained because of the $θ$-dependence of the temperature.
We prove that higher dimensional Einstein spacetimes which possess a geodesic, non-degenerate double Weyl aligned null direction (WAND) $\ell$ must additionally possess a second double WAND (thus being of type D) if either: (a) the Weyl tensor obeys $C_{abc[d}\ell_{e]}\ell^c=0$ ($\LeftrightarrowΦ_{ij}=0$, i.e., the Weyl type is II(abd)); (b) $\ell$ is twistfree. Some comments about an extension of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem to six dimensions are also made.
Recently, we have provided an analytical treatment of the phenomena known as the 'black-hole bomb' (arXiv:0910.0734). In particular, we have determined analytically the unstable growing resonances of a massive scalar field in the rotating Kerr black hole spacetime. It was later claimed by J. G. Rosa (arXiv:0912.1780) that the analytic procedure may fail for some values of the field's mass. This claim was based on the concern that some of the Gamma functions that are involved in the analysis may develop poles. In this comment we show by explicit calculations that the Gamma functions which are u…
We develop the analysis of the asymptotic properties of gravity in higher spacetime dimensions $D$, with a particular emphasis on the case $D=5$. Our approach deals with spatial infinity and is Hamiltonian throughout. It is shown that the asymptotic symmetry algebra BMS$_5$, which is realized non linearly, contains a four-fold family of angle-dependent supertranslations. The structure of this non-linear algebra is investigated and a presentation in which the Poincaré subalgebra is linearly realized is constructed. Invariance of the energy is studied. Concluding comments on higher dimensions $D…
We study chronology protection in stationary, rotationally symmetric spacetimes in 2+1 dimensional gravity, focusing especially on the case of negative cosmological constant. We show that in such spacetimes closed timelike curves must either exist all the way to the boundary or, alternatively, the matter stress tensor must violate the null energy condition in the bulk. We also show that the matter in the closed timelike curve region gives a negative contribution to the conformal weight from the point of view of the dual conformal field theory. We illustrate these properties in a class of examp…
Trying to quantize the string in a de Sitter spacetime, Miao Li, Wei Song and Yushu Song presents a solution for the string equation of motion (JHEP04(2007)042) that is not correct. This reopens the problem by them addressed.
Explicit tests are presented of the conjectured entropic origin of the gravitational force. The gravitational force on a test particle in the vicinity of the horizon of a large Schwarzschild black hole in arbitrary spacetime dimensions is obtained as entropic force. The same conclusion can be reached for the cases of a large electrically charged black hole and a large slowly rotating Kerr black hole. The generalization along the same lines to a test mass in the field of an arbitrary spherical star is also studied and found not to be possible. Our results thus reinforce the argument that the en…
We study the effect of extra dimensions on the process of massive Dirac fermion emission in the spacetime of (4+n)-dimensional black hole, by examining the Dirac operator in arbitrary spacetime dimension. We comment on both bulk and brane emission and find absorption cross section and luminosity of Hawking radiation in the low-energy approximation.
It was recently pointed out that if an absorbing boundary condition is imposed at infinity, an asymptotically anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild black hole with a spherical horizon takes only a finite amount of time to evaporate away even if its initial mass is arbitrarily large. We show that this is a rather generic property in AdS spacetimes: regardless of their horizon topologies, neutral AdS black holes in general relativity take about the same amount of time to evaporate down to the same size of order L, the AdS length scale. Our discussion focuses on the case in which the black hole has toral …
We show how the traversable wormhole induced by a double-trace deformation of the thermofield double state can be understood as a modular inclusion of the algebras of exterior operators. The effect of this deformation is the creation of a new region of spacetime deep in the bulk, corresponding to a non-trivial center between the left and right algebras. This set-up provides a precise framework for investigating how black hole interiors are encoded in the CFT. In particular, we use modular theory to demonstrate that state dependence is an inevitable feature of any attempt to represent operators…
We reply to the comments by P.Midodashvili about our previous paper [1]. We argue that, contrary to the conclusions in Refs. [2,3], the Generalized Uncertainty Principle proposed by Ng and van Dam in Ref. [4] is compatible with the Holographic Principle in spacetimes with extra dimensions only for a very special (and somehow unrealistic) choice of the relation between the size and mass of the clock.
