We propose a model with two Higgs doublet where quark and charged-lepton masses in the first and second families are induced at one-loop level, and neutrino masses are induced at the two-loop level. In our model we introduce an extra $U(1)_R$ gauge symmetry that plays a crucial role in achieving desired terms in no conflict with anomaly cancellation. We show the mechanism to generate fermion masses, the resultant mass matrices and Yukawa interactions in mass eigenstates, and discuss several interesting phenomenologies such as muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment and dark matter candidate that are arisen from this model.
Mixing between light and heavy neutrino states has been proposed as an explanation (or partial explanation) for the 3-sigma NuTeV anomaly and the 2-sigma departure of the $Z^0$ invisible width from its expected value. I assume herein that neutrino masses and mixings result from the conventional seesaw mechanism involving six chiral neutrino states, the first three being members of weak doublets, the others weak singlets. A finely-tuned choice of both the (bare) Majorana masses and the (Higgs-induced) Dirac masses can fit solar and atmospheric neutrino data and also result in significant (but n…
We consider a 5D SUSY $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times {\cal U}(1)$ model compactified on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2$ orbifold. To cancel anomalies arising from the presence of ${\cal U}(1)$, we employ a Chern-Simons term and also chiral fields which could reside on the brane or in the bulk depending on the model. The presence of ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry leads to baryon number conservation, gives rise to matter parity, and permits satisfactory neutrino masses and mixings even for a low fundamental scale. The brane Fayet-Iliopoulos D-terms naturally break ${\cal U}(1)$, leaving N=1 SUSY unbroken in…
The dynamical fermion mass generation on the D3-brane in the Randall-Sundrum space-time is discussed in a model with bulk fermions in interaction with fermions on the branes. It is found that the dynamical fermion masses are generated at the natural (R.-S.) radius of the compactified extra space and may be made small compared with masses of the Kaluza-Klein modes which is of order of TeV.
A framework for predicting charged fermion masses in supersymmetric grand unified theories is extended to make predictions in the neutrino sector. Eight new predictions are made, and their relevance to neutrino oscillation experiments and the solar neutrino problem are discussed.
The dynamical fermion mass generation in the 4-dimensional brane is discussed in a model with 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein fermions in interaction with 4-dimensional fermions. It is found that the dynamical fermion masses are generated beyond the critical radius of the compactified extra dimensional space and may be made small compared with masses of the Kaluza-Klein modes.
This paper is based on four lectures given at the Trieste Summer School 1994 on theories of fermion masses. The first two lectures introduce three mechanisms which have been used to construct models of fermion masses. We then discuss some recent applications of these ideas. In the last lecture we briefly review SO(10) and some predictive theories of fermion masses.
We calculate the splitting between fermion and anti-fermion effective masses in high temperature gauge theories in the presence of a non-vanishing chemical potential due to the $CP$-asymmetric fermionic background. In particular we consider the case of left-handed leptons in the $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ theory when the temperature is above $250$ GeV and the gauge symmetry is restored.
A model is presented in which O(10 TeV) stop masses, typically required by the Higgs boson mass in supersymmetric models, do not originate from soft supersymmetry breaking terms that would drive the Higgs mass squared parameter to large negative values but rather from the mixing with vectorlike partners. Their contribution to the Higgs mass squared parameter is reduced to threshold corrections and, thus, it is one loop suppressed compared to usual scenarios. New fermion and scalar partners of the top quark with O(10 TeV) masses are predicted.
We propose an SO(10) grand unified theory which has the simplest Higgs structure discussed so far in the literature. We include only two Higgs scalars, a 210-plet and a 16-plet. In addition to the regular fermions we include one singlet, whose mass term breaks chiral symmetry, so that fermions can get masses. All fermions acquire see-saw masses, since there are no Higgs bi-doublets. Required neutrino masses with large mixing as well as leptogenesis are possible in this model.
I propose the first multiscalar singlet extension of the Standard Model (SM), that generates tree level top quark and exotic fermion masses as well as one and three loop level masses for charged fermions lighter than the top quark and for light active neutrinos, respectively, without invoking electrically charged scalar fields. That model, which is based on the $S_{3}\times Z_{8}$ discrete symmetry, successfully explains the observed SM fermion mass and mixing pattern. The charged exotic fermions induce one loop level masses for charged fermions lighter than the top quark. The $Z_{8}$ charged …
Talks presented at Beyond The Standard Model IV Conference, Lake Tahoe, Dec 94: NEW FERMION FAMILIES AND PRECISION ELECTROWEAK DATA: We highlight a trend in the precision electroweak data towards light new physics and argue that some spectra of strongly interacting technifamilies are plausibly compatible with the data. FERMION MASSES IN EXTENDED TECHNICOLOUR: An ETC model with a minimal number of operators responsible for fermion masses that break the global symmetries in the observed manner postdicts the light quark masses. In a class of multidimensional models, topology of a thick brane provides three chiral fermionic families with hierarchical masses and mixings in the effective four-dimensional theory, while the full model contains a single vector-like generation. We carry out numerical simulations and reproduce all known Standard Model fermion masses and mixings in one of these models.
We consider models that generate hierarchies via the separation of fermion wavefunctions in higher-dimensional spaces. We calculate the effects of gauge interactions between fermions and show that these are important and could help to explain (i) why the heaviest known fermion is a charge 2/3 quark, rather than a charge -1/3 quark or a lepton, (ii) why this fermion has a mass $m_t$ comparable to the electroweak symmetry breaking scale $M_{ew}$, (iii) the patterns $m_t >> m_b > m_τ$ and $m_c >> m_s > m_μ$, and (iv) the smallness of neutrino masses.
Four-fermion operators with large anomalous dimension may feed down mass to quarks and leptons from a heavy fourth family. No technicolor sector is required. A model illustrates the origin of the large top mass along with quark mass hierarchies and mass mixings.
Masses of fermions in the SO(10) 16-plet are constructed using only the 10, 120 and 126 scalar multiplets. The mass matrices are restricted to be hermitian and the theory is constructed to have certain assumed quark masses, charged lepton masses and CKM matrix in accord with data. The remaining free parameters are found by fitting to light neutrino masses and MSN matrices result as predictions.
Dynamical equations for fermion masses are derived using high scale universal mass generation and consequent mass evolution due to $SU(3), SU(2)$, and U(1$ gauge interaction. Assuming mass generation at the GUT scale $M=10^{14}$ GeV, one obtains hierarchy and a large spread in fermion masses with roughly correct values of $m_ν, m_τ, m_t, m_b$ in the third generation. The smallness of neutrino mass, $ν_3\sim 10^{-12} m_{t}$, naturally arises in the solution.
Two topics are covered in this paper. In the first part the relation between quark mass matrices and observable quantities in gauge theories. In the second part neutrino masses and mixings in a seesaw framework.
We describe a geometric picture for the pattern of fermion masses of the three generations which is invariant with respect to the renormalization group below the electroweak scale. Moreover, we predict the upper limit for the ratio between the Dirac masses of the $μ$ and $τ$ neutrinos, $m_{ν_μ}/ m_{ν_τ} < (9.6 \pm 0.6) 10^{-3}$.
We propose a systematic and renormalizable sequential loop suppression mechanism to generate the hierarchy of the Standard Model fermion masses from one discrete symmetry. The discrete symmetry is sequentially softly broken in order to generate one-loop level masses for the bottom, charm, tau and muon leptons and two-loop level masses for the lightest Standard Model charged fermions. The tiny masses for the light active neutrinos are produced from radiative type-I seesaw mechanism, where the Dirac mass terms are effectively generated at two-loop level.
Radiatively generated fermion masses without tree level Yukawa couplings are re-analyzed within supersymmetric models. Special emphasis is given to the possible appearance of color and charge breaking vacua. Several scenarios in which the radiative mechanism can be accomodated for the first, second, and third generation fermion masses are presented. Some of these require a low scale of supersymmetry breaking.
The origin of the fermion generations is discussed. A strong interactions spin $I_{S}$ is introduced which unifies the quarks and leptons as two multiplets of this spin. The electroweak vector bosons and gluons emerge as the fused states of these fermion multiplets.
The possibility of adding an SU(2) horizontal symmetry to the 331 model is studied. It is found that simple, anomaly-free fermion assignments can be made which lead to plausible results for fermion masses and mixings. In particular, all particles of the first generation are massless at tree-level, and the CKM matrix acquires a realistic form.
The origin of quark and lepton masses is one of the outstanding problems of physics. As the experimental data becomes more and more accurate, testing theories of fermion masses requires greater care. In this talk we discuss a theoretical framework for testing those theories with a high energy desert. It is only with precision tests that we can hope to narrow the set of viable, beyond the standard model theories.
We discuss a test of the Standard Model fermion mass origin in models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. The couplings of composite pseudoscalar resonances to top quarks allow to distinguish high-scale Extended-Technicolor-type fermion mass generation from fermion partial compositeness and low-scale mass generation via an induced vacuum expectation value of a doublet coupled to the composite sector. These different possible origins of fermion masses are thus accessible via weak-scale physics searched for at the LHC.
The fermion masses and mixing angles are fitted using only 3 free parameters in a non-supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, with new approximately conserved chiral gauge quantum numbers broken by a set of Higgs fields. The fundamental mass scale of this anti-grand unification model is given by the Planck mass. We also calculate neutrino mixing angles and masses, as well as CP violation from the CKM matrix. A good fit is obtained to the observed fermion masses but our predictions of the neutrino masses are too small to lead to any observable neutrino oscillation effects claimed today,…
We accomplish our efforts to obtain predictions for all four-fermion final states of e+ e- annihilation and the corresponding bremsstrahlung reactions which are possible in the framework of the Standard Model. For this purpose we have developed a program EE4FGAMMA. Our predictions are valid for fermions of arbitrary masses and we can obtain results for total cross sections without any collinear cut. Keeping exact fermion masses is of course required for top quark production. We give a detailed phenomenological analysis of fermion mass effects and real photon radiation for all channels of four-…
As a minimal theory of fermion masses we extend the SM by heavy vectorlike fermions, with flavor-anarchical Yukawa couplings, that mix with chiral fermions such that small SM Yukawa couplings arise from small mixing angles. This model can be regarded as an effective description of the fermionic sector of a large class of existing flavor models and thus might serve as a useful reference frame for a further understanding of flavor hierarchies in the SM. Already such a minimal framework gives rise to FCNC effects through exchange of massive SM bosons whose couplings to the light fermions get modi…
We discuss fermion masses and mixings in models derived from orbifold GUTs such that gauge coupling unification is achieved without low energy supersymmetry by utilizing a non-canonical U(1)_Y. A gauged U(1)_X flavor symmetry plays an essential role, and the Green-Schwarz mechanism is invoked in anomaly cancellations. Models containing vector-like particles with masses close to M_{GUT} are also discussed.
We consider the problem of the ordinary charged fermion mass patterns in the framework of a version of the 3-3-1 electroweak gauge model, which includes charged heavy leptons. The masses of the top and the bottom quarks are given at the tree level. All the other charged fermions get their masses at the one loop level. The Yukawa coupling strength can be universal. The model is compatible with a mechanism for neutrino mass generation proposed by other authors.
The effective potential for the Wilson loop in the SU(2) gauge theory with N_f massive fundamental and N_a massive adjoint fermions on S^1 x M^4 is computed at the one-loop level, assuming periodic boundary conditions for the gauge field and general boundary conditions for fermions. It is shown that there are critical values for the bare mass, and the boundary condition parameter for the adjoint fermions, beyond which the symmetry pattern changes. However, neither bare mass, nor the boundary condition parameter for the fundamental fermion play any role on the vacuum structure, thus the symmetr…
We propose a predictive inert 2 Higgs doublet model, where the Standard Model (SM) symmetry is extended by $S_{3}\otimes Z_{2}\otimes Z_{12}$ and the field content is enlarged by extra scalar fields, charged exotic fermions and two heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos. The charged exotic fermions generate a nontrivial quark mixing and provide one-loop-level masses for the first- and second-generation charged fermions. The masses of the light active neutrinos are generated from a one loop-level radiative seesaw mechanism. Our model successfully explains the observed SM fermion mass and mixing …
Supersymmetric theories involving a spontaneously broken flavor symmetry can lead to fermion masses which vanish at tree level but are generated by radiative corrections. In the context of supersymmetric theories with minimal low energy field content we discuss which fermion masses and mixings may be obtained radiatively, and find that constraints from flavor changing phenomenology imply that only the first generation fermion masses and some (but not all) CKM mixings can naturally come from radiative corrections. We also consider general conditions on theories of flavor which guarantee the exi…
In a previous work we have showed that the ${\cal Z}_{2}^{\prime}$ Symmetry, imply that the light fermions, the electron and the quarks, $u,d$ and $s$, get their masses only at one loop level. Here, we considere the more general hypothesis for flavour mixing in the sfermion sector in the MSSM. Then, we present our results to the masses of these light fermions and as a final result we can explain why the $s$ quark is heavier than the $u,d$ quarks. This mechanism is in agrement with the experimental constraint on the sfermion's masses values.
SO(10) grand unified theory seems to have all the ingredients to be a complete unified theory of quarks and leptons. I review here its minimal, possibly realistic versions, both supersymmetric and not.
Recently it has been pointed out that no limits can be put on the scale of fermion mass generation $(M)$ in technicolor models, because the relation between the fermion masses $(m_f)$ and $M$ depends on the dimensionality of the interaction responsible for generating the fermion mass. Depending on this dimensionality it may happens that $m_f$ does not depend on $M$ at all. We show that exactly in this case $m_f$ may reach its largest value, which is almost saturated by the top quark mass. We make few comments on the question of how large can be a dynamically generated fermion mass.
We present a SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R * U(1) left-right symmetric model for elementary particles and their connection with the fermion mass spectrum. New mirror fermions and a minimal set of Higgs particles are proposed. The model can accommodate a consistent pattern for charged and neutral fermion masses as well as neutrino oscillations. The connection between the left and right sectors can be done by the neutral vector gauge boson Z and a new heavy Z'.
It is usually considered that the SO(10) model with one 10 and one 126 Higgs scalars cannot reproduce the observed quark and charged lepton masses. Against this conventional conjecture, we find solutions of the parameters which can give the observed fermion mass spectra. The SO(10) model with one 10 and one 120 Higgs scalars is also discussed.
The discrete flavor symmetry A4 explains very well neutrino data at low energy, but it seems difficult to extend it to grand unified models since in general left-handed and right-handed fields belong to different A4 representations. Recently it has been proposed a model where all the fermions equally transform under A4. We study here a concrete SO(10) realization of such a model providing small neutrino masses through the seesaw mechanism. We fit at tree level the charged fermion masses run up to the unification scale. Some fermion masses properties come from the SO(10) symmetry while lepton m…
The problem of fermion masses and mixings is discussed in the context of supersymmetric grand unification theories. Some predictive frameworks based on the $SU(5)$, $SO(10)$ and $SU(6)$ models are reviewed. [Based on lectures delivered at the ICTP Summer School on `High Energy Physics and Cosmology', Trieste, Italy, 3-28 July 1995 (to appear on Proceedings), and XIX Int. Conference on {\em Particle Physics and Astrophysics in the Standard Model and Beyond}, Bystra, Poland, 19-26 September 1995]
The paper suggests a left-right mirror symmetric model with the flavor symmetries $Z_{3L}\otimes Z_{3R}$. It can simultaneously accommodate the standard model, neutrino physics and the baryon asymmetry. The fermion masses and $CP$ violation originate from vacuum spontaneous breaking of the flavor field. The baryon asymmetry is implemented through the leptogenesis which is related to the lepton $CP$ violation. The model can naturally and correctly reproduce all kinds of experimental data, in particular, all of the values of the fermion masses and mixings are accurately fitted by the fewer param…
Massive neutrinos are a generic prediction of SO(10), and models of unification cry for supersymmetry. Since we have a rather detailed information on neutrino and charged fermion masses, the real question is: how/whether it is possible to build a SO(10) supersymmetric model, that correctly incorporates fermion masses. We show that a simple construction is possible in the context of a minimal theory. We concentrate on the two heaviest generations, discuss the predictions of the model, and briefly comment on open questions.
An $SO(10)$ model where the $10_H$ and $120_H$ representations are used for generating fermion masses is quite predictive, though due to the absence of $SU(2)_{L,R}$ triplet/singlet fields it cannot give rise to neutrino masses through the usual type-I or type-II seesaw mechanisms. In this paper for neutrino masses we propose an extension of such an $SO(10)$ model by adding fermions in the adjoint representation (${45}_F$) and a symmetry breaking scalar $\bar{16}_H$. The $\bar{16}_H$ couples the adjoint fermions to the standard fermions in ${16}_F$ and induces neutrino masses through the `doub…
We consider a flavor model based on A4 modular group to account for both lepton and quark parameters (masses and mixing). The inverse seesaw mechanism is considered to produce the light neutrino masses. Lepton masses and mixing are obtained in terms of Yukawa coupling ratios and values of the modulus τ nearby some fixed points for inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. The quark masses and mixing are arisen at the same τ values used in inverted neutrino mass hierarchy and are in agreements with the recent data.
We propose a multiscalar singlet extension of the singlet-triplet Higgs model capable of explaining the SM fermion mass spectrum and mixing parameters. Our model is based on the $Δ\left( 27\right) $ family symmetry, supplemented by cyclic symmetries, which are spontaneously broken thus yielding the observed hierarchy of the SM charged fermion masses and quark mixing angles. The masses of the light active neutrinos are produced by type-II seesaw mechanism mediated by the neutral component of the $SU(2)_{L}$ scalar triplet. The model symmetries lead to the extended Gatto-Sartori-Tonin relations …
We find an intriguing relation between neutrino and charged fermion masses, $|m_{ν_3^{}}^2- m_{ν_1^{}}^2| : (m_{ν_2^{}}^2- m_{ν_1^{}}^2):: V_{tb}^4 m_τ^2 m_b^2/m_t^2 : V_{cs}^4 m_μ^2 m_s^2/m_c^2$. We further indicate this relation can be predicted by a left-right symmetric model.
We study a class of models for tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing in SO(10) grand unified SUSY framework. Neutrino masses arise from both type-I and type-II seesaw mechanisms. We use dimension five operators in order to not spoil tri-bimaximal mixing by means of type-I contribution in the neutrino sector. We show that it is possible to fit all fermion masses and mixings including also the recent T2K result as deviation from the tri-bimaximal.
In the conventional left-right gauge model, if the Higgs scalar sector consists only of an $SU(2)_L$ doublet and an $SU(2)_R$ doublet, fermion masses are zero at tree level. There have been many studies on how they would become massive. With the help of a dark sector with $U(1)_D$ gauge symmetry, it is shown how all standard-model fermions may acquire realistic masses radiatively, including that of the top quark. In this context, the particle content of the model also implies the automatic conservation of baryon number $B$ and lepton number $L$ as in the standard model. Observable anomalous Hi…
We make a detailed analysis on the proton decay in a supersymmetric SO(10) model proposed by K.Babu, I.Gogoladze, P.Nath, and R. Syed. We introduce quark mixing, and find that this model can generate fermion mass without breaking the experimental bound on proton decay. We also predict large CKM unitarity violations.
Fermion masses and mixing, both in the quark and leptonic sector, are discussed within the approach to the Yukawa puzzle proposed by Arkani-Hamed and Schmaltz. In the quark sector we have shown that at least two extra dimensions are necessary in order to obtain sufficient CP violation, while reproducing the correct quark mass spectrum and mixing angles. We have also studied the consequences of suppressing lepton number violating charged lepton decays within this scenario for lepton masses and mixing angles.
Custodial $SU(2)$ breaking due to dynamical fermion masses is studied in a rather general context and it is shown how some well known limiting cases are correctly described. The type of ``gap equation'' which can systematically lead to extra negative contributions to the so--called $ρ$--parameter is emphasized. Furthermore general model independent features are discussed and it is shown how electro--weak precision measurements can be sensitive to the fermion content and/or dynamical features of a given theory.
We point out that if quark and lepton masses arise dynamically, then in a wide class of theories the corresponding running masses $m_{f_j}(p)$ exhibit the power-law decay $m_{f_j}(p) \propto Λ_j^2/p^2$ for Euclidean momenta $p >> Λ_j$, where $f_j$ is a fermion of generation $j$, and $Λ_j$ is the maximal scale relevant for the origin of $m_{f_j}$. We estimate resultant changes in precision electroweak quantities and compare with current data. It is found that this data allows the presence of such corrections. We also note that this power-law decay renders primitively divergent fermion mass corr…
A SUSY SO(10) $\times A_4$ GUT model is constructed for fermion masses and mixing by introducing a minimal set of low dimensional Higgs representations needed to break the guage symmetry down to $SU(3)_c \times U(1)_{em}$. The hierarchy of fermion masses can be understood in the framework of $A_4$ symmetry. From the $A_4$-invariant superpotential, the "double lopsided" mass matrices for the charged leptons and the down quarks are obtained. It is shown that this structure leads to bi-large neutrino mixings simultaneously with small CKM mixing angles. An excellent fit to the masses and mixings o…
We show how a specific sequential breaking pattern of a U(2) flavour symmetry occurs automatically in a broad framework. The relative orientation in U(2) space of the spurion fields that breaks the U(2) symmetry is uniquely fixed, thus determining the form of the fermion mass matrices in a predictive way.
We show that the main features of the pattern of fermion masses and mixing can be expressed in terms of simple relations among weak-basis invariants. In the quark sector, we identify the weak-basis invariants which signal the observed alignment of the up and down quark mass matrices in flavour space. In the lepton sector, we indicate how a set of conditions on weak-basis invariants can lead to an approximate tribimaximal lepton mixing matrix. We also show the usefulness of these invariants in the study of specific ansätze for the flavour structure of fermion mass matrices.
In a model with a gauge group $SU(3)_H\otimes G_{SM}$, where $SU(3)_H$ is a horizontal symmetry and $G_{SM}=SU(3)_C\otimes SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$ is the standard model, we propose a radiative mechanism of mass generation mediated by the $SU(3)_H$ gauge bosons for the light fermions, meanwhile the masses of the heaviest family are generated by the implementation of see-saw mechanisms with the introduction of vectorial fermions.
