Let $ψ:\mathbb R_+\to\mathbb R_+$ be a non-increasing function. A real number $x$ is said to be $ψ$-Dirichlet improvable if it admits an improvement to Dirichlet's theorem in the following sense: the system $$|qx-p|< \, ψ(t) \ \ {\text{and}} \ \ |q|<t$$ has a non-trivial integer solution for all large enough $t$. Denote the collection of such points by $D(ψ)$. In this paper, we prove that the Hausdorff measure of the complement $D(ψ)^c$ (the set of $ψ$-Dirichlet non-improvable numbers) obeys a zero-infinity law for a large class of dimension functions. Together with the Lebesgue measure-theoretic results established by Kleinbock \& Wadleigh (2016), our results contribute to building a complete metric theory for the set of Dirichlet non-improvable numbers.
Let $ψ:\mathbb R_{+}\to \mathbb R_{+}$ be a nonincreasing function. A pair $(A,\mathbf b),$ where $A$ is a real $m\times n$ matrix and $\mathbf b\in\mathbb R^{m},$ is said to be $ψ$-Dirichlet improvable, if the system $$\|A\mathbf q +\mathbf b-\mathbf p\|^m<ψ(T), \quad \|\mathbf q\|^n<T$$ is solvable in $\mathbf p\in\mathbb Z^{m},$ $\mathbf q\in\mathbb Z^{n}$ for all sufficiently large $T$ where $\|\cdot\|$ denotes the supremum norm. For $ψ$-Dirichlet non-improvable sets, Kleinbock--Wadleigh (2019) proved the Lebesgue measure criterion whereas Kim--Kim (2021) established the Hausdorff measure …
It is well known that in dimension one the set of Dirichlet improvable real numbers consists precisely of badly approximable and singular numbers. We show that in higher dimensions this is not the case by proving that there exist continuum many Dirichlet improvable vectors that are neither badly approximable nor singular. This is a consequence of a stronger statement that involves very well approximable points. In the last section we formulate the notion of intermediate Dirichlet improvable sets concerning approximations by rational planes of every intermediate dimension and show that they coi…
In a recent paper of Akhunzhanov and Shatskov the two-dimensional Dirichlet spectrum with respect to Euclidean norm was defined. We consider an analogous definition for arbitrary norms on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and prove that, for each such norm, the set of Dirichlet improvable pairs contains the set of badly approximable pairs, hence is hyperplane absolute winning. To prove this we make a careful study of some classical results in the geometry of numbers due to Chalk--Rogers and Mahler to establish a Hajós--Minkowski type result for the critical locus of a cylinder. As a corollary, using a recent res…
For a decreasing real valued function $ψ$, a pair $(A,\mathbf{b})$ of a real $m\times n$ matrix $A$ and $\mathbf{b}\in\mathbb{R}^m$ is said to be $ψ$-Dirichlet improvable if the system $$\|A\mathbf{q}+\mathbf{b}-\mathbf{p}\|^m < ψ(T)\quad\text{and}\quad\|\mathbf{q}\|^n < T$$ has a solution $\mathbf{p}\in\mathbb{Z}^m$, $\mathbf{q}\in\mathbb{Z}^n$ for all sufficiently large $T$, where $\|\cdot\|$ denotes the supremum norm. Kleinbock and Wadleigh (2019) established an integrability criterion for the Lebesgue measure of the $ψ$-Dirichlet non-improvable set. In this paper, we prove a similar criter…
Let $ψ:\mathbb R_+\to\mathbb R_+$ be a non-increasing function. A real number $x$ is said to be $ψ$-Dirichlet improvable if the system $$|qx-p|< \, ψ(t) \ \ {\text{and}} \ \ |q|<t$$ has a non-trivial integer solution for all large enough $t$. Denote the collection of such points by $D(ψ)$. In this paper, we prove a zero-infinity law valid for all dimension functions under natural non-restrictive conditions. Some of the consequences are zero-infinity laws, for all essentially sub-linear dimension functions proved by Hussain-Kleinbock-Wadleigh-Wang (2018), for some non-essentially sub-linear dim…
Let $X=\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})/\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$, and $g_t=\text{diag}(e^{2t}, e^{-t}, e^{-t})$. Let $ν$ denote the push-forward of the normalized Lebesgue measure on a segment of a straight line in the expanding horosphere of $\{g_t\}_{t>0}$, under the map $h\mapsto h\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ from $\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ to $X$. We give explicit necessary and sufficient Diophantine conditions on the line for equidistribution of each of the following families of measures on $X$: (1) $g_t$-translates of $ν$ as $t\to\infty$. (2) averages of $g_t$-translates of $ν$ over $t\in[0,T]$ as $T\…
Let $Ψ:[1,\infty )\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{+}$ be a non-decreasing function, $a_{n}(x)$ the $n$'{th} partial quotient of $x$ and $q_{n}(x)$ the denominator of the $n$'{th} convergent. The set of $Ψ$-Dirichlet non-improvable numbers \begin{equation*} G(Ψ):=\Big\{x\in \lbrack 0,1):a_{n}(x)a_{n+1}(x)\,>\,Ψ\big(q_{n}(x) \big)\ \mathrm{for\ infinitely\ many}\ n\in \mathbb{N}\Big\}, \end{equation*} is related with the classical set of $1/q^{2}Ψ(q)$-approximable numbers $ \mathcal{K}(Ψ)$ in the sense that $\mathcal{K}(3Ψ)\subset G(Ψ)$. Both of these sets enjoy the same $s$-dimensional Hausdorff measur…
This note pushes further the discussion about relations between Dirichlet improvable, badly approximable and singular points held in recent joint work with Beresnevich, Guan, Velani and Ramirez, by considering Diophantine sets extending the notion of badly approximability.
In this article we calculate the Hausdorff dimension of the set \begin{equation*} \mathcal{F}(Φ)=\left\{ x\in \lbrack 0,1):\begin{aligned}a_{n+1}(x)a_n(x) \geq Φ(n) \ {\rm for \ infinitely \ many \ } n\in \mathbb N \ {\rm and } \\ a_{n+1}(x)< Φ(n) \ {\rm for \ all \ sufficiently \ large \ } n\in \mathbb N \end{aligned}\right\} \end{equation*} where $Φ:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow (1,\infty)$ is any function with $\lim_{n\to \infty} Φ(n)=\infty.$ This in turn contributes to the metrical theory of continued fractions as well as gives insights about the set of Dirichlet non-improvable numbers.

Let $ψ$ be a continuous decreasing function defined on all large positive real numbers. We say that a real $m\times n$ matrix $A$ is $ψ$-Dirichlet if for every sufficiently large real number $t$ one can find $\boldsymbol{p} \in \mathbb{Z}^m$, $\boldsymbol{q} \in \mathbb{Z}^n\smallsetminus\{\boldsymbol{0}\}$ satisfying $\|A\boldsymbol{q}-\boldsymbol{p}\|^m< ψ({t})$ and $\|\boldsymbol{q}\|^n<{t}$. This property was introduced by Kleinbock and Wadleigh in 2018, generalizing the property of $A$ being Dirichlet improvable which dates back to Davenport and Schmidt (1969). In the present paper, we gi…
By introducing a ubiquity property for rectangles, we prove the mass transference principle from rectangles to rectangles, i.e., if a sequence of rectangles forms a ubiquity system (a full measure property), then the limsup set defined by shrinking these rectangles to smaller rectangles has full Hausdorff measure or to say transfer a full measure property to a full Hausdorff measure property for brevity. The limsup sets generated by balls or generated by rectangles appear at the most fundamental level in Diophantine approximation: one follows from Dirichlet's theorem, the other follows from Mi…
The classical Khintchine and Jarník theorems, generalizations of a consequence of Dirichlet's theorem, are fundamental results in the theory of Diophantine approximation. These theorems are concerned with the size of the set of real numbers for which the partial quotients in their continued fraction expansions grows with a certain rate. Recently it was observed that the growth of product of pairs of consecutive partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion of a real number is associated with improvements to Dirichlet's theorem. In this paper we consider the products of several consecut…
Singular vectors are those for which the quality of rational approximations provided by Dirichlet's Theorem can be improved by arbitrarily small multiplicative constants. We provide an upper bound on the Hausdorff dimension of singular vectors lying on self-similar fractals in $\mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying the open set condition. The bound is in terms of quantities which are closely tied to Frostman exponents of projections of the Hausdorff measure supported on the fractal. Our bound is optimal in the sense that it agrees with the exact dimension of singular vectors obtained by Cheung and Chevalli…
Let $X = G/Γ$, where $G$ is a Lie group and $Γ$ is a lattice in $G$, let $U$ be an open subset of $X$, and let $\{g_t\}$ be a one-parameter subgroup of $G$. Consider the set of points in $X$ whose $g_t$-orbit misses $U$; it has measure zero if the flow is ergodic. It has been conjectured that this set has Hausdorff dimension strictly smaller than the dimension of $X$. This conjecture has been proved when $X$ is compact or when $G$ is a simple Lie group of real rank $1$. In this paper we prove this conjecture for the case $G=\textrm{SL}_{m+n}(\mathbb{R})$, $Γ=\textrm{SL}_{m+n}(\mathbb{Z})$ and …
