In this note we use the strong maximum principle and integral estimates prove two results on minimal hypersurfaces $F:M^n\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with free boundary on the standard unit sphere. First we show that if $F$ is graphical with respect to any Killing field, then $F(M^n)$ is a flat disk. This result is independent of the topology or number or boundaries. Second, if $M^n = \mathbb{D}^n$ is a disk, we show the supremum of the curvature squared on the interior is bounded below by $n$ times the infimum of the curvature squared on the boundary. These may be combined the give an impression of the curvature of non-flat minimal hyperdisks with free boundary.
In this paper we prove that any immersed stable capillary hypersurfaces in a ball in space forms are totally umbilical. This solves completely a long-standing open problem. In the proof one of crucial ingredients is a new Minkowski type formula. We also prove a Heintze-Karcher-Ros type inequality for hypersurfaces in a ball, which, together with the new Minkowski formula, yields a new proof of Alexandrov's Theorem for embedded CMC hypersurfaces in a ball with free boundary.
In this work, we prove that any two free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in the unit Euclidean ball have an intersection point in any half-ball. This is a strong version of the Frankel property proved by A. Fraser and M. Li \cite{FRLI}. As a consequence, we obtain the two-piece property for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in the unit ball: every equatorial disk divides any compact minimal hypersurface with free boundary in the unit ball in two connected pieces.
In this paper we introduce a Guan-Li type volume preserving mean curvature flow for free boundary hypersurfaces in a ball. We give a concept of star-shaped free boundary hypersurfaces in a ball and show that the Guan-Li type mean curvature flow has long time existence and converges to a free boundary spherical cap, provided the initial data is star-shaped.
We study the stability of capillary hypersurfaces in a unit Euclidean ball. It is proved that if the mass center of the generalized body enclosed by the immersed capillary hypersurface and the wetted part of the sphere is located at the origin, then the hypersurface is unstable. An immediate result is that all known examples except the totally geodesic ones and spherical caps are unstable.
In this paper we prove that a flat free-boundary minimal $n$-disk, $n\geq3$, in the unit Euclidean ball $B^{n+1}$ is the unique compact free boundary minimal hypersurface in the unit Euclidean ball which the squared norm of the second fundamental form is less than either $\frac{n^2}{4}$ or $\frac{(n-2)^2}{4|x|^2}$. Moreover, we prove analogous results for compact free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in annular domains with a conformally Euclidean metric.
We use the inverse mean curvature flow with a free boundary perpendicular to the sphere to prove a geometric inequality involving the Willmore energy for convex hypersurfaces of dimension $n\geq 3$ with boundary on the sphere.
In this paper we obtain two classification theorems for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces outside of the unit ball (exterior FBMH for short) in Euclidean space. The first result states that the only exterior stable FBMH with parallel embedded regular ends are the catenoidal hypersurfaces. To achieve this we prove a Bôcher type result for positive Jacobi functions on regular minimal ends in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which, after some calculations, implies the first theorem. The second theorem states that any exterior FBMH $Σ$ with one regular end is a catenoidal hypersurface. Its proof is based on a…
In a round ball $B\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ endowed with an $O(n+1)$-invariant metric we consider a radial function that weights volume and area. We prove that a compact two-sided hypersurface in $B$ which is stable capillary in weighted sense and symmetric about some line containing the center of $B$ is homeomorphic to a closed $n$-dimensional disk. When combined with Hsiang symmetrization and other stability results this allows to deduce that the interior boundary of any isoperimetric region in $B$ for the Gaussian weight is a closed $n$-disk of revolution. For $n=2$ we also show that a compa…
We consider the rate of volume growth of large Carnot-Carathéodory metric balls on a class of unbounded model hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^2$. When the hypersurface has a uniform global structure, we show that a metric ball of radius $δ\gg 1$ either has volume on the order of $δ^3$ or $δ^4$. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions on the hypersurface to display either behavior.
In this note, we observe that if $B$ is a ball in a Euclidean space with dimension $n$, $n\geq3$, then a stable CMC hypersurface $Σ$ with free boundary in $B$ satisfies \[ nA\leq L\leq nA\left( \frac{1+\sqrt{1+4(n+1)H^2}}{2} \right)\,, \] where $L$, $A$ and $H$ denote the length of $\partial Σ$, the area of $Σ$ and the mean curvature of $Σ$, respectively. Consequently, if the boundary $\partial Σ$ is embedded then $Σ$ must be totally geodesic or starshaped with respect to the center of the ball. This result is an improvement of a theorem proved by A. Ros and E. Vergasta \cite{R-V} . In particu…
We prove that there are no minimal hypersurfaces properly immersed in any region of the Euclidean space bounded by unstable minimal cones. We also prove the analogous result for $r$-minimal hypersurfaces.
In this article, we establish a relationship between geometric quantities of a hypersurface restricted to its boundary, and the geometric quantities of its boundary as a hypersurface of the boundary of the ball. As a first application, we prove that the quantity of umbilical points of a free boundary surface in the unit ball counted with multiplicities depend only on its topology; moreover, we obtain as consequences that free boundary surfaces are annuli if, and only if, they have no umbilical points, and a new proof of the Nitsche Theorem. Secondly, we prove two geometric integral inequalitie…
In this paper, we show that the catenoids and the Clifford minimal hypersurfaces are the only complete minimal hypersurfaces satisfying the Simons' equation (3.9) in the space forms.
In this paper we first introduce quermassintegrals for free boundary hypersurfaces in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Euclidean unit ball. Then we solve some related isoperimetric type problems for convex free boundary hypersurfaces, which lead to new Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities. In particular, for $n=2$ we obtain a Minkowski-type inequality and for $n=3$ we obtain an optimal Willmore-type inequality. To prove these estimates, we employ a specifically designed locally constrained inverse harmonic mean curvature flow with free boundary.
In this paper, we prove that, up to similarity, there are only two minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ that are asymptotic to a Simons cone, i.e. the minimal cone over the minimal hypersurface $\sqrt{\frac pn}\mathbb{S}^p\times \sqrt{\frac{n-p}n} \mathbb{S}^{n-p}$ of $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$
This is the first in a series of papers where we develop new structural elements on singular area minimizing hypersurfaces, the skin structures. They disclose previously unapproachable and largely unexpected geometric and analytic properties of such hypersurfaces.
We show that the space of min-max minimal hypersurfaces is non-compact when the manifold has an analytic metric of positive Ricci curvature and dimension $3\leq n+1\leq 7$. Furthermore, we show that bumpy metrics with positive Ricci curvature admit minimal hypersurfaces with unbounded index+area. When combined with the recent work fo F.C. Marques and A. Neves, we then deduce some new properties regarding the infinitely many minimal hypersurfaces they found.
In this paper, we study $n$-dimensional complete minimal hypersurfaces in a unit sphere. We prove that an $n$-dimensional complete minimal hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere with $f_3$ constant is isometric to the totally geodesic sphere or the Clifford torus if $S\leq 1.8252 n-0.712898$, where $S$ denotes the squared norm of the second fundamental form of this hypersurface.
In this paper we prove that every smooth complete closed complex hypersurface in the open unit ball $\mathbb{B}_n$ of $\mathbb{C}^n$ $(n\ge 2)$ is a level set of a noncritical holomorphic function on $\mathbb{B}_n$ all of whose level sets are complete. This shows that $\mathbb{B}_n$ admits a nonsingular holomorphic foliation by smooth complete closed complex hypersurfaces and, what is the main point, that every hypersurface in $\mathbb{B}_n$ of this type can be embedded into such a foliation. We establish a more general result in which neither completeness nor smoothness of the given hypersurf…
In this expository paper, we discuss some of the main geometric inequalities for minimal hypersurfaces. These include the classical monotonicity formula, the Alexander-Osserman conjecture, the isoperimetric inequality for minimal surfaces, and the Michael-Simon Sobolev inequality.
Given a closed complex hypersurface $Z\subset \mathbb{C}^{N+1}$ $(N\in\mathbb{N})$ and a compact subset $K\subset Z$, we prove the existence of a pseudoconvex Runge domain $D$ in $Z$ such that $K\subset D$ and there is a complete proper holomorphic embedding from $D$ into the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^{N+1}$. For $N=1$, we derive the existence of complete properly embedded complex curves in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^2$, with arbitrarily prescribed finite topology. In particular, there exist complete proper holomorphic embeddings of the unit disc $\mathbb{D}\subset \mathbb{C}$ into the unit b…
We prove that the index is bounded from below by a linear function of its first Betti number for any compact free boundary $f$-minimal hypersurface in certain positively curved weighted manifolds.
In this paper, we study closed embedded minimal hypersurfaces in a Riemannian $(n+1)$-manifold ($2\le n\le 6$) that minimize area among such hypersurfaces. We show they exist and arise either by minimization techniques or by min-max methods: they have index at most $1$. We apply this to obtain a lower area bound for such minimal surfaces in some hyperbolic $3$-manifolds.
For 3 $\leq$ n $\leq$ 7, we prove that a bumpy closed Riemannian n-manifold contains a sequence of connected embedded closed minimal surfaces with unbounded area.
In this work, we investigate the existence of compact free-boundary minimal hypersurfaces immersed in several domains. Using an original integral identity for compact free-boundary minimal hypersurfaces that are immersed in a domain whose boundary is a regular level set, we study the case where this domain is a quadric or, more generally, a rotational domain. This existence study is done without topological restrictions. We also obtain a new gap theorem for free boundary hypersurfaces immersed in an Euclidean ball and in a rotational ellipsoid.
We prove that if $M$ is a strictly stable complete minimal hypersurface in Euclidean space with finite density at infinity and which lies on one side of a minimal cylinder with cross-section a strictly stable area minimizing hypercone, then $M$ must be cylindrical. Applications will be given in the references [Sim20a], [Sim20b].
The purpose of this paper is to study a complete orientable minimal hypersurface with finite index in an $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $N$. We generalize Theorems 1.5-1.6 (\cite{Seo14}). In 1976, Schoen and Yau proved the Liouville type theorem on stable minimal hypersurface, i.e., Theorem 1.7 (\cite{SchoenYau1976}). Recently, Seo (\cite{Seo14}) generalized Theorem 1.7 (\cite{SchoenYau1976}). Finally, we generalize Theorems 1.7 (\cite{SchoenYau1976}) and 1.8 (\cite{Seo14})
We prove that every complete non-compact manifold of finite volume contains a (possibly non-compact) minimal hypersurface of finite volume. The main tool is the following result of independent interest: if a region $U$ can be swept out by a family of hypersurfaces of volume at most $V$, then it can be swept out by a family of mutually disjoint hypersurfaces of volume at most $V + \varepsilon$.
We study the behavior of minimal hypersurfaces in the Schwarzschild $n$-manifolds that intersect the horizon orthogonally along the boundary. We show that a free boundary minimal hypersurface and a totally geodesic hyperplane must intersect when the distance between them is achieved in a bounded region. We also discuss when the Schwarzschild metric is perturbed in a way that its scalar curvature is no longer positive.
Using a new estimate for the Peng-Terng invariant and the multiple-parameter method, we verify a rigidity theorem on the stronger version of Chern Conjecture for minimal hypersurfaces in spheres. More precisely, we prove that if $M$ is a compact minimal hypersurface in $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ whose squared length of the second fundamental form satisfies $0\leq S-n\leq\frac{n}{18}$, then $S\equiv n$ and $M$ is a Clifford torus.
Generalizing earlier work by Ros in ambient dimension three, we prove an affine lower bound for the Morse index of closed minimal hypersurfaces inside a flat torus in terms of their first Betti number (with purely dimensional coefficients).
