The fundamental principles underlying the arrangement of elements into solid compounds with an enormous variety of crystal structures are still largely unknown. This study presents a general overview of the structure types appearing in an important subset of the solid compounds, i.e., binary and ternary compounds of the 6A column oxides, sulfides and selenides. It contains an analysis of these compounds, including the prevalence of various structure types, their symmetry properties, compositions, stoichiometries and unit cell sizes. It is found that these compound families include preferred stoichiometries and structure types that may reflect both their specific chemistry and research bias in the available empirical data. Identification of non-overlapping gaps and missing stoichiometries in these structure populations may be used as guidance in the search for new materials.
The optical properties of focused ion beam-engraved perfectly aligned and spatially controlled multi-quantum-well InGaN-GaN nanopillars were investigated. Crystalline MQW nanopillars with a diameter of 30 to 95 nm and high aspect ratios showed a maximum of three-fold enhancement in emission intensity per unit active area. A light emitting contour map of Taiwan is drawn with a nanopillar structure to demonstrate the site control of the technique adopted in the present study. Raman scattering studies were used to characterize the newly created surfaces. Unknown peaks in GaN and InGaN nanostructu…
The electronic structure of crystalline CdTe, CdO, $α$-TeO$_2$, CdTeO$_3$ and Cd$_3$TeO$_6$ is studied by means of first principles calculations. The band structure, total and partial density of states, and charge densities are presented. For $α$-TeO$_2$ and CdTeO$_3$, Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation (LDA) correctly describes the insulating character of these compounds. In the first four compounds, LDA underestimates the optical bandgap by roughly 1 eV. Based on this trend, we predict an optical bandgap of 1.7 eV for Cd$_3$TeO$_6$. This material shows an isolat…
Using a density functional based electronic structure method, we study the effect of crystalline dielectrics on the metallic surface states of Bismuth- and chalcogen-based binary and ternary three dimensional topological insulator (TI) thin films. Crystalline quartz (SiO2) and boron nitride (BN) dielectrics were considered. Crystalline approximation to the amorphous quartz allows to study the effect of oxygen coverage or environmental effects on the surface states degradation which has gained attention recently in the experimental community. We considered both symmetric and asymmetric dielectr…
In the present work, the aspects of magnetic and structural properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are described in the framework of fist-principles approach and mapped into ternary composition diagrams. The stable atomic arrangement and magnetic alignment for compositions with cubic austenite and tetragonal martensite structures across phase diagrams are predicted. It is shown that Ni- and Ga-rich compositions possess the regular Heusler structure in contrast to Mn-rich compositions with inverse Heusler structure as favorable one. Compositions with unstable austenite structure are concentrated in the …
Ternary C_{x}N_{y}O_{z} compounds are actively researched as novel high energy density and ultrahard materials. Although some synthesis work has been performed at ambient conditions, very little is known about the high pressure chemistry of of C_{x}N_{y}O_{z} compounds. In this work, first principles variable-composition evolutionary structure prediction calculations are performed with the goal of discovering novel mixed C_{x}N_{y}O_{z} materials at ambient and high pressure conditions. By systematically searching ternary variable composition crystalline materials, the full ternary phase diagr…
Comprehensive Mapping of Tracer Diffusivities Across Composition Space in Ternary NiAlTi and Quinary NiCoFeAlTi High-Entropy Alloy Using Diffusion Couple Experiments and Physics Informed Neural Network Inversion
The evolution of solidification microstructures in ternary metallic alloys is investigated by adaptive finite element simulations of a general multicomponent phase-field model. A morphological transition from dendritic to globular growth is found by varying the alloy composition at a fixed undercooling. The dependence of the growth velocity and of the impurity segregation in the solid phase on the composition is analyzed and indicates a smooth type of transition between the dendritic and globular growth structures.
We report the calculated fundamental band gaps of \emph{wurtzite} ternary alloys Zn$_{1-x}$M$_x$O (M=Mg, Cd) and the band offsets of the ZnO/Zn$_{1-x}$M$_x$O heterojunctions, these II-VI materials are important for electronics and optoelectronics. Our calculation is based on density functional theory within the linear muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) approach where the modified Becke-Johnson (MBJ) semi-local exchange is used to accurately produce the band gaps, and the coherent potential approximation (CPA) is applied to deal with configurational average for the ternary alloys. The combined LMTO-MBJ-…
A pseudo ternary diffusion couple technique in a multicomponent system by simplifying the mathematical complications of Onsager formalism is proposed for the estimation of composition dependent values of the interdiffusion coefficients. This is otherwise impossible following the conventional method in a system with more than three components. Other alternative methods estimate the average diffusion coefficients over a composition range of random choice and lack physical significance. This method can be followed in a multicomponent system with any number of components on the condition that only…
Mixing heterogeneous Li-ion conductive materials is one of potential ways to enhance the Li-ion conductivity more than that of the parent materials. However, the development of the mixtures had not exhibited significant progress because it is a formidable task to cover the vast possible composition of the parent materials using traditional ways. Here, we introduce a fashion based on machine learning to optimize the composition ratio of ternary Li3PO4-Li3BO3-Li2SO4 mixture for its Li-ion conductivity. According to our results, the optimum composition of the ternary mixture system is 25:14:61 (L…
We present a data-centric deep learning (DL) approach using neural networks (NNs) to predict the thermodynamics of ternary solid solutions. We explore how NNs can be trained with a dataset of Gibbs free energies computed from a CALPHAD database to predict ternary systems as a function of composition and temperature. We have chosen the energetics of the FCC solid solution phase in 226 binaries consisting of 23 elements at 11 different temperatures to demonstrate the feasibility. The number of binary data points included in the present study is 102,000. We select six ternaries to augment the bin…

We measured the local composition and thickness of SiO2-based glass material from diffraction. By using four dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM), we obtained diffraction at each scanning point. Comparing the obtained diffraction with simulated diffraction patterns, we try to measure the local composition and thickness. Although this method requires some constraints, this method measured local composition and thickness with 1/10 or less electron dose of EELS.
Ternary nitride materials hold promise for many optical, electronic, and refractory applications yet their preparation via solid-state synthesis remains challenging. Often, high pressures or reactive gasses are used to manipulate the effective chemical potential of nitrogen, yet these strategies require specialized equipment. Here we report on a simple two-step synthesis using ion-exchange reactions that yield rocksalt-derived MgZrN$_2$ and Mg$_2$NbN$_3$, as well as layered MgMoN$_2$. All three compounds show nearly temperature-independent and weak paramagnetic responses to an applied magnetic…
Window glass is a ternary mixture, while pyrex (after window glass, the most common form of commercial glass) is a quaternary. Building on our previous success in deriving the composition of window glass (sodium calcium silicate) without adjustable parameters, and borrowing from known reconstructed crystalline surfaces, we model pyrex as silica clusters with a specific ternary interface. Our global model explains the thermal expansivity contours of ternary sodium borosilicates, and it is consistent with the optimized resistance of pyrex to mechanical and thermal shocks. It suggests new directi…
Investigation of ideal shear strength of dilute binary and ternary Ni-based alloys using first-principles calculations, CALPHAD modeling and correlation analysis
Using first-principles calculations, we show that the conduction and valence band energies and their deformation potentials exhibit a non-negligible compositional bowing in strained ternary semiconductor alloys such as InGaAs. The electronic structure of these compounds has been calculated within the framework of local density approximation and hybrid functional approach for large cubic supercells and special quasi-random structures, which represent two kinds of model structures for random alloys. We find that the predicted bowing effect for the band energy deformation potentials is rather ins…
Building on the recent discovery of tough nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys with amorphous intergranular films, this paper investigates ternary nanocrystalline Cu-Zr-Hf alloys with a focus on understanding how alloy composition affects the formation of disordered complexions. Binary Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf alloys with similar initial grain sizes were also fabricated for comparison. The thermal stability of the nanocrystalline alloys was evaluated by annealing at 950 °C (>95% of the solidus temperatures), followed by detailed characterization of the grain boundary structure. All of the ternary alloys exhibi…
A ternary type-I Si clathrate, K8AlxSi46-x, which is a candidate functional material composed of abundant non-toxic elements, was synthesized and its transport properties were investigated at temperatures ranging from 10 to 320 K. The synthesized compound is confirmed to be the ternary type-I Si clathrate K8Al7Si39 with a lattice parameter of a = 10.442 A using neutron powder diffractometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient measurements revealed that K8Al7Si39 is a metal with electrons as the dominant carriers at a density…
We report a detailed first-principles study of the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of the superconducting C$_{32}$ phase of the ternary alloy CaAl$_{2-x}$Si$_x$, both in the experimental range $0.6 \leq x \leq 1.2$, for which the alloy has been synthesised, and in the theoretical limits of high aluminium and high silicon concentration. Our results indicate that, in the experimental range, the dependence of the electronic bands on composition is well described by a rigid-band model, which breaks down outside this range. Such a breakdown, in the (theoretical) limit of high alum…
As an aid to the development of hydrogen separation membranes, we predict the temperature dependent phase diagrams using first principles calculations combined with thermodynamic principles. Our method models the phase diagram without empirical fitting parameters. By applying thermodynamic principles and solid solution models, temperature-dependent features of the Cu-Pd-S system can be explained, specifically solubility ranges for substitutions in select crystalline phases. Electronic densities of states calculations explain the relative favorability of certain chemical substitutions. In addit…
We use ab initio global structural prediction, and specifically the minima hopping method, to explore the periodic table in search of novel oxide phases. In total, we study 183 different compositions of the form MXO2, where M=(Cu, Ag, Au) and X is an element of the periodic table. This set includes the well-known Cu delafossite compounds that are, up to now, the best p-type transparent conductive oxides known to mankind. Our calculations discover 81 stable compositions, out of which only 36 are included in available databases. Some of these new phases are potentially good candidates for transp…
We have synthesized and investigated the magnetic and transport properties of a series of compounds, R2CoIn8 (R = rare earth). Compounds form in single phase with a tetragonal structure (space group P4/mmm, no. 162). The Ce compound shows heavy fermion behavior. The magnetic susceptibility of Pr2CoIn8 shows a marked deviation from the Curie-Weiss behavior at low temperatures, which is attributed to the crystalline electric field effects. Heat capacity and magnetization measurements show that Dy2CoIn8 undergoes a magnetic transition at 17 K and a second transition near 5 K, the latter of which …
In order to clarify thermodynamic stability of Mg-based long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure, we systematically study energetic preference for alloys on multiple stacking with different composition for random mixing of constituent elements, Mg, Y, and Zn based on special quasirandom structure (SQS). Through calculation of formation free energy of SQS, Mg-Y-Zn alloy exhibits phase separation into Mg- and Y-Zn rich phase, which is consistent with previous theoretical studies. Bulk modulus of SQSs for multiple compositions, stacking sequences, and atomic configuratons ranges around 35 GP…
The datasets presented in this article are related to materials research on hard ferromagnet in TM-Fe-Si (TM=Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, and Ta) ternary systems. The motivation for data collection is based on the research paper entitled "Novel hard magnetic phase with Zr$_{11.5}$Fe$_{53}$Si$_{35.5}$ composition". The datasets are composed of scanning electron microscope images, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and magnetization data for TM$_{7}$Fe$_{52}$Si$_{41}$ annealed at 1050 $^{\circ}$C. The chemical compositions of constituent phases were determined by an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (ED…
In the present work, ternary Special Quasirandom Structures (SQSs) for a fcc solid solution phase are generated at different compositions, $x_A=x_B=x_C=\tfrac{1}{3}$ and $x_A=\tfrac{1}{2}$, $x_B=x_C=\tfrac{1}{4}$, whose correlation functions are satisfactorily close to those of a random fcc solution. The generated SQSs are used to calculate the mixing enthalpy of the fcc phase in the Ca-Sr-Yb system. It is observed that first-principles calculations of all the binary and ternary SQSs in the Ca-Sr-Yb system exhibit very small local relaxation. It is concluded that the fcc ternary SQSs can provi…
Inorganic nitrides with wurtzite crystal structures are well-known semiconductors used in optoelectronic devices. In contrast, rocksalt-based nitrides are known for their metallic and refractory properties. Breaking this dichotomy, here we report on ternary nitride semiconductors with rocksalt crystal structures, remarkable optoelectronic properties, and the general chemical formula Mg$_{x}$TM$_{1-x}$N (TM=Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb). These compounds form over a broad metal composition range and our experiments show that Mg-rich compositions are nondegenerate semiconductors with visible-range optical abso…
Composition-tunable ternary Cd1-xPbxS nanocrystals (NCs) are very important materials for remote sensing and detecting in the infrared (IR) wavelength region. They are, however, almost exclusively prepared by wet chemical routes which leads to surface-capped nanoparticles. The surface capping molecules could move their absorption peak from mid-IR to near IR wavelength region. However, surface clean Cd1-xPbxS nanocrystals (NCs) would demonstrate intrinsic optical spectrum in the mid-IR region. Herein, we present a physical mechanical alloying process being applied to prepare tens of grams of su…
Exploratory synthesis in novel chemical spaces is the essence of solid-state chemistry. However, uncharted chemical spaces can be difficult to navigate, especially when materials synthesis is challenging. Nitrides represent one such space, where stringent synthesis constraints have limited the exploration of this important class of functional materials. Here, we employ a suite of computational materials discovery and informatics tools to construct a large stability map of the inorganic ternary metal nitrides. Our map clusters the ternary nitrides into chemical families with distinct stability …
The phase stability of fcc and bcc magnetic binary Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni, Cr-Ni alloys and ternary Fe-Cr-Ni alloys is investigated using a combination of density functional theory (DFT), Cluster Expansion (CE) and Magnetic Cluster Expansion (MCE). Energies, magnetic moments, and volumes of more than 500 alloy structures are evaluated using DFT, and the most stable magnetic configurations are compared with experimental data. Deviations from the Vegard law in fcc Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, associated with non-linear variation of atomic magnetic moments as functions of alloy composition, are observed. Accuracy of t…
Since their discovery around a century ago, the structure and chemistry of the multi-functional half-Heusler semiconductors have been studied extensively as three component systems. The elemental groups constituting these ternary compounds with the nominal formula XYZ are well established. From the very same set of well-known elements we explore a phase space of quaternary double ($X'X''Y_2Z_2$, $X_2Y'Y''Z_2$, and $X_2Y_2Z'Z''$), triple ($X_2'X''Y_3Z_3$) and quadruple ($X_3'X''Y_4Z_4$) half-Heusler compositions which 10 times larger in size. Using a reliable, first-principles thermodynamics me…
The ordered structure of MgO-ZnO alloy system is a versatile tunable optical material promising for diverse optoelectronic applications. However, isovalent and isostructural alloy compositions of MgO-ZnO are generally unstable at ambient conditions. Using state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} evolutionary simulations, we predict and study the properties of stable phases of MgO-ZnO. We establish the dynamical stability of the predicted crystal structures through the phonon and Raman spectroscopy. Detailed analyses of two of the most stable structures reveal highly tunable properties that could be…
Growing energy storage demands on lithium-ion batteries necessitate exploration of new electrochemical materials as next-generation battery electrode materials. In this work, we investigate the previously unexplored electrochemical properties of earth-abundant and tunable Zn1-xSn1+xN2 (x = -0.4 to x = 0.4) thin films, which show high electrical conductivity and high gravimetric capacity for Li insertion. Enhanced cycling performance is achieved compared to previously published end-members Zn3N2 and Sn3N4, showing decreased irreversible loss and increased total capacity and cycle stability. The…
The study of the Cu-Sn-In ternary system has become of great importance in recent years, due to new environmental regulations forcing to eliminate the use of Pb in bonding technologies for electronic devices. A key relevant issue concerns the intermetallic phases which grow in the bonding zone and are determining in their quality and performance. In this work, we focus in the η-phase (Cu2In or Cu6Sn5) that exists in both end binaries and as a ternary phase. We present a neutron diffraction study of the constitution and crystallography of a series of alloys around the 60 at.% Cu composition, an…
The identification of alternatives to the Lithium-ion battery architecture remains a crucial priority in the diversification of energy storage technologies. Accompanied by the low reduction potential of $\mathrm{Ca^{2+}/Ca}$, -2.87 V vs. SHE, metal-anode-based rechargeable Calcium (Ca) batteries appear competitive in terms of energy densities. However, the development of Ca-batteries lacks high-energy density intercalation cathode materials. Using first-principles methodologies, we screen a large chemical space for potential Ca-based cathode chemistries, with composition of $\mathrm{Ca_iTM_jZ_…
Using the hybrid exchange-correlation functional within the density-functional theory, we have systematically investigated the structural and electronic properties of MO (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd) in binary rocksalt (B1), zincblende (B3) and wurtzite (B4) phases, including the structural parameters, bulk moduli, band gaps and deformation potentials. Our results agree well with the experimental data and other theoretical results, and give a better understanding of the relationship between the geometric and electronic structure. After calculating the band alignment, we find that in both th…
The crystalline garnet Mn3Fe2Si3O12 and an amorphous phase of the same nominal composition are synthesized at high pressure. The magnetic properties of the two forms are reported. Both phases order antiferromagnetically. The crystalline phase exhibits a Curie-Weiss theta of -47.2 K, with a sharp ordering transition at 12 K. The glassy phase exhibits a larger antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss theta, of -83.0 K, with a broad ordering transition observed at 2.5 K. Both phases can be classified as magnetically frustrated, although the amorphous phase shows a much higher degree of frustration. The amor…
A systematic theoretical study of two PbTe-based ternary alloys, Pb1-xCdxTe and Pb1-xMnxTe, is reported. First, using ab initio methods we study the stability of the crystal structure of CdTe - PbTe solid solutions, to predict the composition for which rock-salt structure of PbTe changes into zinc-blende structure of CdTe. The dependence of the lattice parameter on Cd (Mn) content x in the mixed crystals is studied by the same methods. The obtained decrease of the lattice constant with x agrees with what is observed in both alloys. The band structures of PbTe-based ternary compounds are calcul…
Application of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) in photonic, optoelectronic or valleytronic devices requires the growth of continuous monolayers, heterostructures and alloys of different materials in a single process. We present a facile pulsed thermal deposition method which provides precise control over layer thickness and stoichiometry of two-dimensional systems. The versatility of the method is demonstrated on ternary monolayers of Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$S$_{2}$ and on heterostructures combining metallic TaS$_{2}$ and semiconducting MoS$_{2}$ layers. The fabricated ternary monolayers cove…
Device applications involving topological insulators (TIs) will require the development of scalable methods for fabricating TI samples with sub-micron dimensions, high quality surfaces, and controlled compositions. Here we use Bi-, Se-, and Te-bearing metalorganic precursors to synthesize TIs in the form of nanowires. Single crystal nanowires can be grown with compositions ranging from Bi2Se3 to Bi2Te3, including the ternary compound Bi2Te2Se. These high quality nanostructured TI compounds are suitable platforms for on-going searches for Majorana Fermions.
The requirement for large bulk resistivity in topological insulators has led to the design of complex ternary and quaternary phases with balanced donor and acceptor levels. A common feature of the optimized phases is that they lie close to the p to n transition. The tetradymite Bi2Te3_xSex system exhibits minimum bulk conductance at the ordered composition Bi2Te2Se. By combining local and integral measurements of the density of states, we find that the point of minimum electrical conductivity at x=1.0 where carriers change from hole-like to electron-like is characterized by conductivity of the…
8K superconductivity was observed in the metal rich Li-Pd-B ternary system. Structural, microstructural, electrical and magnetic investigations for various compositions proved that Li2Pd3B compound, which has a cubic structure composed of distorted Pd6B octahedrons, is responsible for the superconductivity. This is the first observation of superconductivity in metal rich ternary borides containing alkaline metal and Pd as a late transition metal. The compound prepared by arc melting has high density, is stable in the air and has an upper critical field, Hc2(0), of 6T.
We investigate segregation behavior of additive elements M (= Ni, Cr) at the C11b/D8m interface for MoSi2- Mo5Si3 alloys, based on first-principles calculation. We first find energetically stable interface structure with interface energy of 0.08 eV/A^2. Based on the stable interface, segregation energy for additive elements is calcu- lated for individual atomic layer, which is applied to Monte Carlo statistical simulation under grand-canonical ensemble to quantitatively predict interface segregation profile. We find that our simulation successfully capture the characteristics in measured segre…
