Fast and reliable reset of a qubit is a key prerequisite for any quantum technology. For real world open quantum systems undergoing non-Markovian dynamics, reset implies not only purification, but in particular erasure of initial correlations between qubit and environment. Here, we derive optimal reset protocols using a combination of geometric and numerical control theory. For factorizing initial states, we find a lower limit for the entropy reduction of the qubit as well as a speed limit. The time-optimal solution is determined by the maximum coupling strength. Initial correlations, remarkably, allow for faster reset and smaller errors. Entanglement is not necessary.
Fault-tolerant quantum computing requires initializing the quantum register in a well-defined fiducial state. In solid-state systems, this is typically achieved through thermalization to a cold reservoir, such that the initialization fidelity is fundamentally limited by temperature. Here, we present a method of preparing a fiducial quantum state with a confidence beyond the thermal limit. It is based on real time monitoring of the qubit through a negative-result measurement -- the equivalent of a `Maxwell's demon' that triggers the experiment only upon the appearance of a qubit in the lowest-e…
We report a metrology scheme which measures magnetic susceptibility of an atomic spin ensemble along the $x$ and $z$ direction and produces parameter estimation with precision beating the standard quantum limit. The atomic ensemble is initialized via one-axis spin squeezing with optimized squeezing time and parameter $ϕ$ to be estimated is assumed as uniformly distributed between 0 and $2π$. One estimation of $ϕ$ can be produced with every two magnetic susceptibility data measured along the two axis respectively, which has imprecision scaling $(1.43\pm{}0.02)/N^{0.687\pm0.003}$ with respect to…
Precision measurement plays a crucial role in all fields of science. The use of entangled sensors in quantum metrology improves the precision limit from the standard quantum limit (SQL) to the Heisenberg limit (HL). To date, most experiments beating the SQL are performed on the sensors which are well isolated under extreme conditions. However, it has not been realized in solid-state spin systems at ambient conditions, owing to its intrinsic complexity for the preparation and survival of pure and entangled quantum states. Here we show a full interferometer sequence beating the SQL by employing …
The shot-noise limited peak sensitivity of cavity-enhanced interferometric measurement devices, such as gravitational-wave detectors, can be improved by increasing the cavity finesse, even when comparing fixed intra-cavity light powers. For a fixed light power inside the detector, this comes at the price of a proportional reduction in the detection bandwidth. High sensitivity over a large span of signal frequencies, however, is essential for astronomical observations. It is possible to overcome this standard sensitivity-bandwidth limit using non-classical correlations in the light field. Here,…
Quantum entanglement is known as a unique feature of quantum mechanics, which cannot be obtained from classical physics. Recently, a coherence interpretation has been conducted for the delayed-choice quantum eraser using coherent photon pairs, where phase-locked symmetric frequency detuning between paired photons plays an essential role for selective measurement-caused nonlocal correlation. Here, a macroscopic version of the nonlocal correlation is presented using orthogonally polarized optical fields in a continuous wave quantum eraser scheme in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The result…
Quantum correlations become formidable tools for beating classical capacities of measurement. Preserving these advantages in practical systems, where experimental imperfections are unavoidable, is a challenge of the utmost importance. Here we propose and realize a quantum ghost imaging protocol able to compensate for the detrimental effect of detection noise and losses. This represents an important improvement as quantum correlations allow low brightness imaging, desirable for reducing the absorption dose. In particular, we develop a comprehensive model starting from a ghost imaging scheme ela…
We show that the exact master equation incorporating initial correlations for open quantum systems, within the Nakajima-Zwanzig operator-projection method, is a homegenous master equation for the reduced density matrix. We also derive explicitly the exact master equation for a large class of bosonic and fermionic open quantum systems incorporating initial correlations, the resulting master equation is homogenous. We find that the effects of the initial correlations can be fully embedded into the fluctuation dynamics through the exact homogenous master equation. Also a generalized nonequilibriu…
Transient phenomena of phase modulated cut-off wavepackets are explored by deriving an exact general solution to Schrödinger's equation for finite range potentials involving arbitrary initial quantum states. We show that the dynamical features of the probability density are governed by a virtual \textit{self-induced two-level system} with energies $E_{+}$, and $E_{-}$, due to the phase modulation of the initial state. The asymptotic probability density exhibits Rabi-oscillations characterized by a frequency $Ω=(E_{+}-E_{-})/\hbar$, which are independent of the potential profile. It is also fou…
We study the coherence trapping of a qubit correlated initially with a non-Markovian bath in a pure dephasing channel. By considering the initial qubit-bath correlation and the bath spectral density, we find that the initial qubit-bath correlation can lead to a more efficient coherence trapping than that of the initially separable qubit-bath state. The stationary coherence in the long time limit can be maximized by optimizing the parameters of the initially correlated qubit-bath state and the bath spectral density. In addition, the effects of this initial correlation on the maximal evolution s…
Generic mesoscopic quantum systems that interact with their environment tend to display appreciable correlations with environment that often play an important role in the physical properties of the system. However, the experimental methods needed to characterize such systems either ignore the role of initial correlations or scale unfavourably with system dimensions. Here, we present a technique that is agnostic to system-environment correlations and can be potentially implemented experimentally. Under a specific set of constraints, we demonstrate the ability to detect and measure specific corr…
Open quantum systems are a subject of immense interest as their understanding is crucial in the implementation of modern quantum technologies. In the study of their dynamics, the role of the initial system-environment correlations is commonly ignored. In this work, to gain insights into the role of these correlations, we solve an exactly solvable model of a single two-level system interacting with a spin environment, with the initial system state prepared by a suitable unitary operation. By solving the dynamics exactly for arbitrary system-environment coupling strength while taking into accoun…
Correlations between a system and its environment lead to errors in an open quantum system. Detecting those correlations would be valuable for avoiding and/or correcting those errors. Here we show that we can detect correlations by only measuring the system itself if we know the cause of the interaction between the two, for example in the case of a dipole-dipole interaction. We investigate the unitary $U$ which is associated with the exchange Hamiltonian and examine the ability to detect initial correlations between a system and its environment for various types of initial states. The states w…
An equation of motion for open quantum systems incorporating memory effects and initial correlations with the environment is presented in terms of an effective Liouville operator that solely acts on states of the system. The environment can induce memory effects via the frequency dependence of the effective Liouville and initial correlations can be mapped to a shifted frequency dependent initial state within the system. The equation of motion generalizes the well known semi-group dynamic equations. In generic systems the effective Liouville has a non-degenerate zero mode. By probability conser…
A quantum system inevitably interacts with its surroundings. In general, one does not have detailed information on an environment. Identifying the environmental features can help us to control the environment and its effects on the dynamics of an open system. Here, we consider a tripartite system and introduce a witness for the initial correlations among environments by means of the concept of the trace distance. Due to the existence of the initial environmental correlations, a tight upper bound is obtained for the growth of the trace distance of open quantum system states. Therefore, the init…
Understanding the dynamics of open quantum systems is a highly important task for the implementation of emerging quantum technologies. To make the problem tractable theoretically, it is common to neglect initial system-environment correlations. However, this assumption is questionable in situations where the system is interacting strongly with the environment. In particular, the system state preparation can then influence the dynamics of the system via the system-environment correlations. To gain insight into the effect of these correlations, we solve an exactly solvable model of a quantum spi…
We find the geometric phase of a two-level system undergoing pure dephasing via interaction with an arbitrary environment, taking into account the effect of the initial system-environment correlations. We use our formalism to calculate the geometric phase for the two-level system in the presence of both harmonic oscillator and spin environments, and we consider the initial state of the two-level system to be prepared by a projective measurement or a unitary operation. The geometric phase is evaluated for a variety of parameters such as the system-environment coupling strength to show that the …
We fully characterize the reduced dynamics of an open quantum system initially correlated with its environment. Using a photonic qubit coupled to a simulated environment we tomographically reconstruct a superchannel---a generalised channel that treats preparation procedures as inputs---from measurement of the system alone, despite its coupling to the environment. We introduce novel quantitative measures for determining the strength of initial correlations, and to allow an experiment to be optimised in regards to its environment.
Dynamics of open quantum systems depends on different types of initial correlations. On the one hand, when system and environment are both inherently multipartite, initial correlations between the parties of the composite environment make the dynamical map non-local, despite of local nature of the interaction between each party of the system and the environment. On the other hand, initial correlations between the open system and its environment prevents one from defining a completely positive dynamical map. Recently, dephasing dynamics of photons has been used in both of these frameworks - the…
We investigate the dynamics of open quantum systems which are initially correlated with their environment. The strategy of our approach is to analyze how given, fixed initial correlations modify the evolution of the open system with respect to the corresponding uncorrelated dynamical behavior with the same fixed initial environmental state, described by a completely positive dynamical map. We show that, for any predetermined initial correlations, one can introduce a linear dynamical map on the space of operators of the open system which acts like the proper dynamical map on the set of physical…
