There exist diverse no-go theorems, ranging from no-cloning to monogamies of quantum correlations and Bell inequality violations, which restrict the processing of information in the quantum world. In a multipartite scenario, monogamy of Bell inequality violation and exclusion principle of dense coding are such theorems, which impede the ability of the system to have quantum advantage between all its parts. In ordered spin systems, the twin restrictions of translation invariance and monogamy of quantum correlations, in general, enforce the bipartite states to be neither Bell inequality violating nor dense-codeable. We show that these quantum characteristics, viz. Bell inequality violation and dense-codeability, can be resurrected, and thereby the no-go theorems overcome, by having quenched disorder in the system parameters leading to quantum spin glass or quantum random field models. We show that the quantum characteristics are regained even though the quenched averaging keeps the disordered spin chains translationally invariant at the physically relevant level of observables. The results show that it is possible to conquer constraints imposed by quantum mechanics in ordered systems by introducing impurities.
Precision measurement plays a crucial role in all fields of science. The use of entangled sensors in quantum metrology improves the precision limit from the standard quantum limit (SQL) to the Heisenberg limit (HL). To date, most experiments beating the SQL are performed on the sensors which are well isolated under extreme conditions. However, it has not been realized in solid-state spin systems at ambient conditions, owing to its intrinsic complexity for the preparation and survival of pure and entangled quantum states. Here we show a full interferometer sequence beating the SQL by employing …
We propose an experimentally feasible scheme for topological interface engineering and show how it can be used for studies of dynamics of topologically nontrivial interfaces and perforation of defects and textures across such interfaces. The method makes use of the internal spin structure of the atoms together with locally applied control of interaction strengths to create many-particle states with highly complex topological properties. In particular, we consider a constructed coherent interface between topologically distinct phases of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.
Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride offers intriguing opportunities for advanced studies of light-matter interaction at the nanoscale, specifically for realizations in quantum nanophotonics. Here, we demonstrate the engineering of optically-addressable spin defects based on the negatively-charged boron vacancy center. We show that these centers can be created in exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride using a variety of focused ion beams (nitrogen, xenon and argon), with nanoscale precision. Using a combination of laser and resonant microwave excitation, we carry out optically detected magnetic…
Engineering a strongly interacting uniform qubit cluster would be a major step towards realizing a scalable quantum system for quantum sensing, and a node-based qubit register. For a solid-state system that uses a defect as a qubit, various methods to precisely position defects have been developed, yet the large-scale fabrication of qubits within the strong coupling regime at room temperature continues to be a challenge. In this work, we generate nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond with sub-10 nm scale precision by using a combination of nanoscale aperture arrays (NAAs) with a high …
We explore the edge defects induced by spin-spin interaction in a finite paradigmatic Heisenberg spin chain. By introducing a gradient magnetic field and a periodically-modulated spin-exchange strength, the resonance between modulation frequency and magnetic field gradient can also induce asymmetric defects at the edges, dubbed as Floquet-Wannier-Zeeman edge defects. The interplay between these two types of edge defects allows us to manipulate the magnon edge states from an isolated band into a continuum one. In the high-frequency regime, we analytically derive effective models to interpret th…
Photonic entangled states lie at the heart of quantum science for the demonstrations of quantum mechanics foundations and supply as a key resource for approaching various quantum technologies. An integrated realization of such states will certainly guarantee a high-degree of entanglement and improve the performance like portability, stability and miniaturization, hence becomes an inevitable tendency towards the integrated quantum optics. Here, we report the compact realization of steerable photonic path-entangled states from a monolithic quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal. The crystal acts a…
Diamond-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) enable direct coupling between the quantum states of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers and the phonon modes of a mechanical resonator. One example, diamond high-overtone bulk acoustic resonators (HBARs), feature an integrated piezoelectric transducer and support high-quality factor resonance modes into the GHz frequency range. The acoustic modes allow mechanical manipulation of deeply embedded NV centers with long spin and orbital coherence times. Unfortunately, the spin-phonon coupling rate is limited by the large resonator size, $>100~μ$m, and …
Engineering single atomic defects into wide bandgap materials has become an attractive field in recent years due to emerging applications such as solid-state quantum bits and sensors. The simplest atomic-scale defect is the lattice vacancy which is often a constituent part of more complex defects such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond, therefore an understanding of the formation mechanisms and precision engineering of vacancies is desirable. We present a theoretical and experimental study into the ultra-fast laser generation of vacancy-interstitial pairs (Frenkel defects) in diamo…
We present an experiment where the quantum coherence in the edge states of the integer quantum Hall regime is tuned with a decoupling gate. The coherence length is determined by measuring the visibility of quantum interferences in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a function of temperature, in the quantum Hall regime at filling factor two. The temperature dependence of the coherence length can be varied by a factor of two. The strengthening of the phase coherence at finite temperature is shown to arise from a reduction of the coupling between co-propagating edge states. This opens the way for a…

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an emerging two dimensional material for quantum photonics owing to its large bandgap and hyperbolic properties. Here we report a broad range of multicolor room temperature single photon emissions across the visible and the near infrared spectral ranges from point defects in hBN multilayers. We show that the emitters can be categorized into two general groups, but most likely possess similar crystallographic structure. We further show two approaches for engineering of the emitters using either electron beam irradiation or annealing, and characterize their photo…
Large arrays of individually controlled atoms trapped in optical tweezers are a very promising platform for quantum engineering applications. However, to date, only disordered arrays have been demonstrated, due to the non-deterministic loading of the traps. Here, we demonstrate the preparation of fully loaded, two-dimensional arrays of up to 50 microtraps each containing a single atom, and arranged in arbitrary geometries. Starting from initially larger, half-filled matrices of randomly loaded traps, we obtain user-defined target arrays at unit filling. This is achieved with a real-time contro…
Engineering coherent systems is a central goal of quantum science. Color centers in diamond are a promising approach, with the potential to combine the coherence of atoms with the scalability of a solid state platform. However, the solid environment can adversely impact coherence. For example, phonon- mediated spin relaxation can induce spin decoherence, and electric field noise can change the optical transition frequency over time. We report a novel color center with insensitivity to both of these sources of environmental decoherence: the neutral charge state of silicon vacancy (SiV0). Throug…
The van der Waals compound, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator, providing a materials platform for exploring exotic quantum phenomena such as the axion insulator state and the quantum anomalous Hall effect. However, intrinsic structural imperfections lead to bulk conductivity, and the roles of magnetic defects are still unknown. With higher concentrations of same types of magnetic defects, the isostructural compound MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ is a better model system for a systematic investigation of the connections among magnetic, topology and lattice defects. In this w…
Interlayer excitons (IXs) formed at the interface of atomically-thin semiconductors possess various novel properties. In a parallel development, nanoscale strain engineering has emerged as an effective means for creating 2D quantum light sources. Exploring the intersection of these two exciting areas, where strain and defects are exploited for the manipulation of IX toward the emergence of new functionalities, is currently at a nascent stage. Here, using MoS2/WSe2 heterostructure as a model system, we demonstrate how strain, defects, and layering can be utilized to create defect-bound IXs capa…
