Interlayer excitons (IXs) formed at the interface of atomically-thin semiconductors possess various novel properties. In a parallel development, nanoscale strain engineering has emerged as an effective means for creating 2D quantum light sources. Exploring the intersection of these two exciting areas, where strain and defects are exploited for the manipulation of IX toward the emergence of new functionalities, is currently at a nascent stage. Here, using MoS2/WSe2 heterostructure as a model system, we demonstrate how strain, defects, and layering can be utilized to create defect-bound IXs capable of bright, robust, and tunable quantum light emission in the technologically important near-infrared spectral range. We were able to achieve ultra-high single-photon purity with g(2)(0) = 0.01. Our strategy of creating site-controlled QEs from the defect-bound IXs represents a paradigm shift in 2D quantum photonics research, from engineering intralayer exciton in monolayer structures towards IXs at the interface of 2D heterostructures.
In this paper, we employ a fully microscopic approach to the study of interlayer excitons in hetero-bilayers. We use Fowler's and Karplus' method to access the dynamical polarizability of non--interacting interlayer excitons in a $\mathrm{WSe}_{2}/\mathrm{WS}_{2}$--based van der Waals heterostructure. Following from the calculation of the linear polarizability, we consider Svendsen's variational method to the calculation of the dynamic third--order polarizability. With this variational method, we study both two--photon absorption and third--harmonic generation processes for interlayer excitons…
We investigate the correction of interlayer exciton binding energy in transition metal dichalcogenides double layers arising from the exciton-optical phonon coupling using the method of Lee-Low-Pines unitary transformation. We find that the binding energy varies in several tens of meV, depending on the polarizability of materials and interlayer distance between double layers. Moreover, the correction of binding energy results in the remarkable increasing of the critical temperature for the condensation of dilute excitonic gas basing on the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless model. These results n…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) heterostructure with a type II alignment hosts unique interlayer excitons with the possibility of spin-triplet and spin-singlet states. However, the associated spectroscopy signatures remain elusive, strongly hindering the understanding of the Moire potential modulation of the interlayer exciton. In this work, we unambiguously identify the spin-singlet and spin-triplet interlayer excitons in the WSe2/MoSe2 hetero-bilayer with a 60-degree twist angle through the gate- and magnetic field-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. Both the singlet and tripl…
Interlayer excitons in layered materials constitute a novel platform to study many-body phenomena arising from long-range interactions between quantum particles. The ability to localise individual interlayer excitons in potential energy traps is a key step towards simulating Hubbard physics in artificial lattices. Here, we demonstrate spatial localisation of long-lived interlayer excitons in a strongly confining trap array using a WS$_{2}$/WSe$_{2}$ heterostructure on a nanopatterned substrate. We detect long-lived interlayer excitons with lifetime approaching 0.2 ms and show that their confin…
Long-lived interlayer excitons with distinct spin-valley physics in van der Waals heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides make them promising for information processing in next-generation devices. While the emission characteristics of interlayer excitons in different types of hetero stacks have been extensively studied, the manipulation of these excitons required to alter the valley-state or tune the emission energy and intensity is still lacking. Here, we demonstrate such control over interlayer excitons in MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures. The encapsulation of our stack with h-…
We show how the excitonic features of biaxial MoS2 flakes are very sensitive to biaxial strain. We find a lower bound for the gauge factors of the A exciton and B exciton of (-41 +- 2) meV/% and (-45 +- 2) meV/% respectively, which are larger than those found for single-layer MoS2. Interestingly, the interlayer exciton feature also shifts upon biaxial strain but with a gauge factor that is systematically larger than that found for the A exciton, (-48 +- 4) meV/%. We attribute this larger gauge factor for the interlayer exciton to the strain tunable van der Waals interaction due to the Poisson …
Semiconductor heterostructures are backbones for solid state based optoelectronic devices. Recent advances in assembly techniques for van der Waals heterostructures has enabled the band engineering of semiconductor heterojunctions for atomically thin optoelectronic devices. In two-dimensional heterostructures with type II band alignment, interlayer excitons, where Coulomb-bound electrons and holes are confined to opposite layers, have shown promising properties for novel excitonic devices, including a large binding energy, micron-scale in-plane drift-diffusion, and long population and valley p…
Exciton binding energies of hundreds of meV and strong light absorption in the optical frequency range make transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) promising for novel optoelectronic nanodevices. In particular, atomically thin TMDs can be stacked to heterostructures enabling the design of new materials with tailored properties. The strong Coulomb interaction gives rise to interlayer excitons, where electrons and holes are spatially separated in different layers. In this work, we reveal the microscopic processes behind the formation, thermalization and decay of these fundamentally interesting a…
Moiré superlattices provide a powerful way to engineer properties of electrons and excitons in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. The moiré effect can be especially strong for interlayer excitons, where electrons and holes reside in different layers and can be addressed separately. In particular, it was recently proposed that the moiré superlattice potential not only localizes interlayer exciton states at different superlattice positions, but also hosts an emerging moiré quasi-angular momentum (QAM) that periodically switches the optical selection rules for interlayer excitons at …
Van der Waals heterostructures constitute a platform for investigating intriguing many-body quantum phenomena. In particular, transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero-bilayers host long-lived interlayer excitons which exhibit permanent out-of-plane dipole moments. Here, we develop a microscopic theory for interlayer exciton-exciton interactions including both the dipolar nature of interlayer excitons as well as their fermionic substructure, which gives rise to an attractive fermionic exchange. We find that these interactions contribute to a drift force resulting in highly non-linear excito…
In heterostructures consisting of different transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers, a staggered band alignment can occur, leading to rapid charge separation of optically generated electron-hole pairs into opposite monolayers. These spatially separated electron-hole pairs are Coulomb-coupled and form interlayer excitons. Here, we study these interlayer excitons in a heterostructure consisting of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers using photoluminescence spectroscopy. We observe a non-trivial temperature dependence of the linewidth and the peak energy of the interlayer exciton, including an unu…
Excitons in semiconductors, bound pairs of excited electrons and holes, can form the basis for new classes of quantum optoelectronic devices. A van der Waals heterostructure built from atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) enables the formation of excitons from electrons and holes in distinct layers, producing interlayer excitons with large binding energy and a long lifetime. Employing heterostructures of monolayer TMDs, we realize optical and electrical generation of long-lived neutral and charged interlayer excitons. We demonstrate the transport of neutral in…
Controlling the flow of charge neutral interlayer exciton (IX) quasiparticles can potentially lead to low loss excitonic circuits. Here, we report unidirectional transport of IXs along nanoscale electrostatically defined channels in an MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterostructure. These results are enabled by a lithographically defined triangular etch in a graphene gate to create a potential energy ''slide''. By performing spatially and temporally resolved photoluminescence measurements, we measure smoothly varying IX energy along the structure and high-speed exciton flow with a drift velocity up to 2 * 1…
Two-dimensional semiconductors have emerged as a new class of materials for nanophotonics for their strong exciton-photon interaction and flexibility for engineering and integration. Taking advantage of these properties, we engineer an efficient lasing medium based on dipolar interlayer excitons, in rotationally aligned atomically thin heterostructures. Lasing is measured from a transition metal dichalcogenide hetero-bilayer integrated in a silicon nitride grating resonator. A sharp increase in the spatial coherence of the emission was observed across the lasing threshold. The work establishes…
When a semiconductor absorbs light, the resulting electron-hole superposition amounts to a uncontrolled quantum ripple that eventually degenerates into diffusion. If the conformation of these excitonic superpositions could be engineered, though, they would constitute a new means of transporting information and energy. We show that properly designed laser pulses can be used to create such excitonic wave packets. They can be formed with a prescribed speed, direction and spectral make-up that allows them to be selectively passed, rejected or even dissociated using superlattices. Their coherence a…
Charge separated interlayer excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterobilayers are being explored for moiré exciton lattices and exciton condensates. The presence of permanent dipole moments and the poorly screened Coulomb interaction make many body interactions particularly strong for interlayer excitons. Here we reveal two distinct phase transitions for interlayer excitons in the MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayer using time and spatially resolved photoluminescence imaging: from trapped excitons in the moiré-potential to the modestly mobile exciton gas as exciton density increases to ne…
Engineering the coupling between fundamental quantum excitations is at the heart of quantum science and technologies. A significant case is the creation of quantum light sources in which coupling between single photons and phonons can be controlled and harnessed to enable quantum information transduction. Here, we report the deterministic creation of quantum emitters featuring highly tunable coupling between excitons and phonons. The quantum emitters are formed in strain-induced quantum dots created in homobilayer semiconductor WSe2. The colocalization of quantum confined interlayer excitons a…
Interlayer excitons in van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides have recently emerged as a fascinating platform for quantum many-body effects, long-range interactions, and opto-valleytronic applications. The practical implementation of such phenomena and applications requires further development of the long-lived character of interlayer excitons. Whereas material developments have successfully enhanced the nonradiative lifetime, the out-of-plane polarization nature of the interlayer excitons has made it challenging to improve the radiative lifetime wit…
Using resonant 2-photon excitation of interlayer electrons in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG), we resolve photoluminescence (PL) that tunes spectrally with stacking angle, θ. This weak signal is 4- 5$\times$ larger than the non-resonant background and is emitted from the interlayer band anti-crossing regions traditionally associated with van Hove singularity resonances. However, our observation of resonant PL emission with delayed ~1 ps electronic thermalization suggests interlayer carriers may instead form bound-excitons. Using both the 2-photon PL and intraband transient absorption spectra, …
We present a theory of optical absorption by interlayer excitons in a heterobilayer formed from transition metal dichalcogenides. The theory accounts for the presence of small relative rotations that produce a momentum shift between electron and hole bands located in different layers, and a moiré pattern in real space. Because of the momentum shift, the optically active interlayer excitons are located at the moiré Brillouin zone's corners, instead of at its center, and would have elliptical optical selection rules if the individual layers were translationally invariant. We show that the excito…
We reveal stacking-induced strong coupling between atomic motion and interlayer excitons through photocurrent measurements of WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ heterojunction photodiodes. Strong coupling manifests as pronounced periodic sidebands in the photocurrent spectrum in frequency windows close to the interlayer exciton resonances. The sidebands, which repeat over large swathes of the interlayer exciton photocurrent spectrum, occur in energy increments corresponding directly to a prominent vibrational mode of the heterojunction. Such periodic patterns, together with interlayer photoconductance oscillati…
Cascade transition between energy levels has important applications, such as in quantum information protocols and quantum cascade lasers. In two-dimensional heterostructure, the moiré superlattice potential can result in multiple interlayer exciton (IX) energy levels. We demonstrate the cascade transitions between such moiré IXs by performing time- and energy-resolved photoluminescence measurements. We show that the lower-energy moiré IX can be excited to higher-energy ones, facilitating IX population inversion.
Based on \emph{ab initio} theoretical calculations of the optical spectra of vertical heterostructures of MoSe$_2$ (or MoS$_2$) and WSe$_2$ sheets, we reveal two spin-orbit-split Rydberg series of excitonic states below the \textsl{A} excitons of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ with a significant binding energy on the order of 250\,meV for the first excitons in the series. At the same time, we predict crystalographically aligned MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures to exhibit an indirect fundamental band gap. Due to the type-II nature of the MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructure, the indirect transition and the …
For monolayer transition metal chalcogenides (TMDs), electrons and excitons in different valleys can be driven to opposite directions by the Berry curvature, serving as a valley-dependent effective magnetic field. In addition to monolayer TMDs, Van der Waals heterostructures provide an attractive platform for emerging valley physics and devices with superior physics properties. Interlayer excitons in TMD heterostructures have a long valley lifetime as compared to monolayer intralayer excitons. Here we report an interlayer exciton valley polarization and valley Hall effect in MoS2/WSe2 in room …
Interlayer valley excitons in bilayer MoS2 feature concurrently large oscillator strength and long lifetime, and hence represent an advantageous scenario for valleytronic applications. However, control of valley pseudospin of interlayer excitons in pristine bilayer MoS2, which lies at the heart of valleytronics, has remained elusive. Here we report the observation of highly circularly polarized photoluminescence from interlayer excitons of bilayer MoS2 with both optical and magnetic addressability. Under excitation of circularly polarized light near exciton resonance, interlayer excitons of bi…
Excitonic insulators conduct neither electrons nor holes but bound electron-hole pairs, excitons. Unfortunately, it is not possible to inject and detect the electron and hole currents independently within a single semiconducting layer. However, interlayer excitonic insulators provide a spatial separation of electrons and holes enabling exciton current measurements. The problem is that the spatial separation weakens electron-hole pairing and may lead to interlayer exciton disassociation. Here we develop an explicitly solvable model to determine an interlayer separation that is strong enough to …

We investigate the optical properties of spin-triplet interlayer excitons in heterobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides in comparison with the spin-singlet ones. Surprisingly, the optical transition dipole of the spin-triplet exciton is found to be in the same order of magnitude to that of the spin-singlet exciton, in sharp contrast to the monolayer excitons where the spin triplet species is considered as dark compared to the singlet. Unlike the monolayer excitons whose spin-conserved (spin-flip) transition dipole can only couple to light of in-plane (out-of-plane) polarization, such restr…
Throughout the years, strongly correlated coherent states of excitons have been the subject of intense theoretical and experimental studies. This topic has recently boomed due to new emerging quantum materials such as van der Waals (vdW) bound atomically thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We analyze the collective properties of charged interlayer excitons observed recently in bilayer TMD heterostructures. We predict new strongly correlated phases - crystal and Wigner crystal - that can be selectively realized with TMD bilayers of properly chosen electron-hole effective mas…
Moiré superlattices in atomically thin van-der-Waals heterostructures hold great promise for an extended control of electronic and valleytronic lifetimes, the confinement of excitons in artificial moiré lattices, and the formation of novel exotic quantum phases. Such moiré-induced emergent phenomena are particularly strong for interlayer excitons, where the hole and the electron are localized in different layers of the heterostructure. In order to exploit the full potential of correlated moiré and exciton physics, a thorough understanding of the ultrafast interlayer exciton formation process a…
Monolayer (ML) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) integrated in optical microcavities host exciton-polaritons as a hallmark of the strong light-matter coupling regime. Analogous concepts for hybrid light-matter systems employing spatially indirect excitons with a permanent electric dipole moment in heterobilayer (HBL) crystals promise realizations of exciton-polariton gases and condensates with immanent dipolar interactions. Here, we identify optical signatures of spatially indirect momentum-bright and momentum-dark interlayer excitons in vertical MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterostructures and imp…
Atomically thin layered two dimensional (2D) material has provided a rich library for both fundamental research and device applications. One of the special advantages is that, bandgap engineering and controlled material response can be achieved by stacking different 2D materials. Recently several types of excitonic lasers have been reported based on Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers, however, the emission is still the intrinsic energy bandgap of the monolayers and lasers harnessing the flexibility of Van der Waals heterostructures have not been demonstrated yet. Here, we report…
The recent proposal of using an anisotropic vacuum for generating valley coherence in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers has expanded the potential of such valley degrees of freedom for applications in valleytronics. In this work, we open up a completely new regime, inaccessible with monolayer TMDCs, of spontaneously generated valley coherence in interlayer excitons in commensurate TMDC bilayer heterostructures. Using the peculiar out of plane polarization of interlayer excitons in conjunction with an in-plane anisotropic electromagnetic vacuum, we show that a much larger region…
The vertical stacking of two-dimensional materials into heterostructures gives rise to a plethora of intriguing optoelectronic properties and presents an unprecedented potential for technological development. While much progress has been made combining different monolayers of transition metal dichalgonenides (TMDs), little is known about TMD-based heterostructures including organic layers of molecules. Here, we present a joint theory-experiment study on a TMD/tetracene heterostructure demonstrating clear signatures of spatially separated interlayer excitons in low temperature photoluminescence…
The optical spectra of vertically stacked MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures contain additional 'interlayer' excitonic peaks that are absent in the individual monolayer materials and exhibit a significant spatial charge separation in out-of-plane direction. Extending on a previous study, we used a many-body perturbation theory approach to simulate and analyse the excitonic spectra of MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayers with three stacking orders, considering both momentum-direct and momentum-indirect excitons. We find that the small oscillator strengths and corresponding optical responses of the in…
This tutorial paper reviews some of the physics of quantum Hall bilayers with a focus on the case where there is low or zero tunnelling between the two layers. We describe the interlayer coherent states at filling factors nu=1 and nu=2 as exciton condensates and discuss some of the theory associated with these states.
We show that an interlayer exciton condensate doped into a strongly correlated Mott insulator exhibits a remarkable enhancement of the bandwidth of the magnetic excitations (triplons). This triplon is visible in the dynamical magnetic susceptibility and can be measured using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. The bandwidth of the triplon scales with the exciton superfluid density, but only in the limit of strong correlations. As such the triplon bandwidth acts as a probe of exciton-spin interactions in the condensate.
Coulomb bound electron-hole pairs, excitons, govern the optical properties of semi-conducting transition metal dichalcogenides like MoS$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We study optical transitions at the K-point for 2H homobilayer MoS$_2$ in Density Functional Theory (DFT) including excitonic effects and compare with reflectivity measurements in high quality samples encapsulated in hexagonal BN. In both calculated and measured spectra we find a strong interlayer exciton transition in energy between A and B intralayer excitons, observable for T$=4 -300$ K, whereas no such transition is observed for the monola…
The nanoscale periodic potentials introduced by moiré patterns in semiconducting van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide a new platform for designing exciton superlattices. To realize these applications, a thorough understanding of the localization and delocalization of interlayer excitons in the moiré potentials is necessary. Here, we investigated interlayer exciton dynamics and transport modulated by the moiré potentials in WS$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterobilayers in time, space, and momentum domains using transient absorption microscopy combined with first-principles calculations. Experimental re…
Starting from the single-particle Dirac Hamiltonian for charge carriers in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), we construct a four-band Hamiltonian describing interlayer excitons consisting of an electron in one TMD layer and a hole in the other TMD layer. An expression for the electron-hole interaction potential is derived, taking into account the effect of the dielectric environment above, below, and between the two TMD layers as well as polarization effects in the transition metal layer and in the chalcogen layers of the TMD layers. We calculate the interlayer exciton binding…
We show that, because of the inevitable twist and lattice mismatch in heterobilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, interlayer excitons have six-fold degenerate light cones anomalously located at finite velocities on the parabolic energy dispersion. The photon emissions at each light cone are elliptically polarized, with major axis locked to the direction of exciton velocity, and helicity specified by the valley indices of the electron and the hole. These finite-velocity light cones allow unprecedented possibilities to optically inject valley polarization and valley current, and the obse…
Geometrical moiré patterns, generic for almost aligned bilayers of two-dimensional (2D) crystals with similar lattice structure but slightly different lattice constants, lead to zone folding and miniband formation for electronic states. Here, we show that moiré superlattice (mSL) effects in $\mathrm{MoSe}_2/\mathrm{WS}_2$ and $\mathrm{MoTe}_2/\mathrm{MoSe}_2$ heterobilayers that feature alignment of the band edges are enhanced by resonant interlayer hybridization, and anticipate similar features in twisted homobilayers of TMDs, including examples of narrow minibands close to the actual band ed…
Twisted van der Waals heterostructures and the corresponding superlattices, moire superlattices, are remarkable new material platforms, in which electron interactions and excited-state properties can be engineered. Particularly, the band offsets between adjacent layers can separate excited electrons and holes, forming interlayer excitons that exhibit unique optical properties. In this work, we employ the first-principles GW-Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) method to calculate quasiparticle band gaps, interlayer excitons, and their modulated excited-state properties in twisted MoSe2/WSe2 bilayers …
