The unpivoted and pivoted Householder QR factorizations are ubiquitous in numerical linear algebra. A difficulty with pivoted Householder QR is the communication bottleneck introduced by pivoting. In this paper we propose using random orthogonal systems to quickly mix together the columns of a matrix before computing an unpivoted QR factorization. This method computes a URV factorization which forgoes expensive pivoted QR steps in exchange for mixing in advance, followed by a cheaper, unpivoted QR factorization. The mixing step typically reduces the variability of the column norms, and in certain experiments, allows us to compute an accurate factorization where a plain, unpivoted QR performs poorly. We experiment with linear least-squares, rank-revealing factorizations, and the QLP approximation, and conclude that our randomized URV factorization behaves comparably to a similar randomized rank-revealing URV factorization, but at a fraction of the computational cost. Our experiments provide evidence that our proposed factorization might be rank-revealing with high probability.
In this work, we focus on connections between $K$-means clustering approaches and Orthogonal Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (ONMF) methods. We present a novel framework to extract the distance measure and the centroids of the $K$-means method based on first order conditions of the considered ONMF objective function, which exploits the classical alternating minimization schemes of Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) algorithms. While this technique is characterized by a simple derivation procedure, it can also be applied to non-standard regularized ONMF models. Using this framework, we con…
In this work, we develop a new fast algorithm, spaQR -- sparsified QR, for solving large, sparse linear systems. The key to our approach is using low-rank approximations to sparsify the separators in a Nested Dissection based Householder QR factorization. First, a modified version of Nested Dissection is used to identify interiors/separators and reorder the matrix. Then, classical Householder QR is used to factorize the interiors, going from the leaves to the root to the elimination tree. After every level of interior factorization, we sparsify the remaining separators by using low-rank approx…
We present a class of fast subspace tracking algorithms based on orthogonal iterations for structured matrices/pencils that can be represented as small rank perturbations of unitary matrices. The algorithms rely upon an updated data sparse factorization -- named LFR factorization -- using orthogonal Hessenberg matrices. These new subspace trackers reach a complexity of only $O(nk^2)$ operations per time update, where $n$ and $k$ are the size of the matrix and of the small rank perturbation, respectively.
In this work, we develop a fast hierarchical solver for solving large, sparse least squares problems. We build upon the algorithm, spaQR (sparsified QR), that was developed by the authors to solve large sparse linear systems. Our algorithm is built on top of a Nested Dissection based multifrontal QR approach. We use low-rank approximations on the frontal matrices to sparsify the vertex separators at every level in the elimination tree. Using a two-step sparsification scheme, we reduce the number of columns and maintain the ratio of rows to columns in each front without introducing any addition…
We introduce and analyze BPALM and A-BPALM, two multi-block proximal alternating linearized minimization algorithms using Bregman distances for solving structured nonconvex problems. The objective function is the sum of a multi-block relatively smooth function (i.e., relatively smooth by fixing all the blocks except one) and block separable (nonsmooth) nonconvex functions. It turns out that the sequences generated by our algorithms are subsequentially convergent to critical points of the objective function, while they are globally convergent under KL inequality assumption. Further, the rate of…
A third order real tensor is mapped to a special f-diagonal tensor by going through Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), standard matrix SVD and inverse DFT. We call such an f-diagonal tensor an s-diagonal tensor. An f-diagonal tensor is an s-diagonal tensor if and only if it is mapped to itself in the above process. The third order tensor space is partitioned to orthogonal equivalence classes. Each orthogonal equivalence class has a unique s-diagonal tensor. Two s-diagonal tensors are equal if they are orthogonally equivalent. Third order tensors in an orthogonal equivalence class have the same …

Classical approaches in cluster analysis are typically based on a feature space analysis. However, many applications lead to datasets with additional spatial information and a ground truth with spatially coherent classes, which will not necessarily be reconstructed well by standard clustering methods. Motivated by applications in hyperspectral imaging, we introduce in this work clustering models based on orthogonal nonnegative matrix factorization, which include an additional total variation (TV) regularization procedure on the cluster membership matrix to enforce the needed spatial coherence …
We consider the design of an orthogonal symmetric/antisymmetric multiwavelet from its matrix product filter by matrix spectral factorization (MSF). As a test problem, we construct a simple matrix product filter with desirable properties, and factor it using Bauer's method, which in this case can be done in closed form. The corresponding orthogonal multiwavelet function is derived using algebraic techniques which allow symmetry to be considered. This leads to the known orthogonal multiwavelet SA1, which can also be derived directly. We also give a lifting scheme for SA1, investigate the influen…

In this paper, we investigate Bauer's method for the matrix spectral factorization of an r-channel matrix product filter which is a halfband autocorrelation matrix. We regularize the resulting matrix spectral factors by an averaging approach and by multiplication by a unitary matrix. This leads to the approximate and exact orthogonal SA4 multiscaling functions. We also find the corresponding orthogonal multiwavelet functions, based on the QR decomposition.

We develop an efficient algorithm for sampling the eigenvalues of random matrices distributed according to the Haar measure over the orthogonal or unitary group. Our technique samples directly a factorization of the Hessenberg form of such matrices, and then computes their eigenvalues with a tailored core-chasing algorithm. This approach requires a number of floating-point operations that is quadratic in the order of the matrix being sampled, and can be adapted to other matrix groups. In particular, we explain how it can be used to sample the Haar measure over the special orthogonal and unitar…
