A theorem of Ritt states the a linearizer of a holomorphic function at a repelling fixed point is periodic only if the holomorphic map is conjugate to a power of $z$, a Chebyshev polynomial or a Lattès map. The converse, except for some exceptions, is also true. In this paper, we prove the analogous statement in the setting of strongly automorphic quasiregular mappings and uniformly quasiregular mappings in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Along the way, we characterize the possible automorphy groups that can arise via crystallographic orbifolds and a use of the Poincaré conjecture. We further give a classification of the behaviour of uniformly quasiregular mappings on their Julia set when the Julia set is a quasisphere, quasidisk or all of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and the Julia set coincides with the set of conical points. Finally, we prove an analogue of the Denjoy-Wolff Theorem for uniformly quasiregular mappings in $\mathbb{B}^3$, the first such generalization of the Denjoy-Wolff Theorem where there is no guarantee of non-expansiveness with respect to a metric.
Many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to uniformly quasiregular maps in higher dimensions. We obtain results of this type for certain classes of quasiregular maps which are not uniformly quasiregular.
It is well-known that the Julia set J(f) of a rational map is uniformly perfect; that is, every ring domain which separates J(f) has bounded modulus, with the bound depending only on f. In this article we prove that an analogous result is true in higher dimensions; namely, that the Julia set J(f) of a uniformly quasiregular mapping f in R^n is uniformly perfect. In particular, this implies that the Julia set of a uniformly quasiregular mapping has positive Hausdorff dimension.
Sun Daochun and Yang Lo have shown that many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to quasiregular self-maps of the Riemann sphere for which the degree exceeds the dilatation. We show that in this context, in contrast to the case of rational functions, the Julia set may have Hausdorff dimension zero. On the other hand, we exhibit a gauge function depending on the degree and the dilatation such that the Hausdorff measure with respect to this gauge function is always positive, but may be finite.
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational and transcendental entire functions has recently been extended to quasiregular maps in more than two real dimensions. Our goal in this paper is similar; we extend the iteration theory of analytic self-maps of the punctured plane to quasiregular self-maps of punctured space. We define the Julia set as the set of points for which the complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood of the point is a finite set. We show that the Julia set is non-empty, and shares many properties with the classical Julia set of an analytic function. These properties…
The Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions has been extended to quasiregular mappings in higher dimension by various authors. The purpose of this paper is an analogous extension of the iteration theory of transcendental entire functions. Here the Julia set is defined as the set of all points such that complement of the forward orbit of any neighbourhood has capacity zero. It is shown that for maps which are not of polynomial type the Julia set is non-empty and has many properties of the classical Julia set of transcendental entire functions.
In this article, we investigate the boundary of the escaping set I(f) for quasiregular mappings on R^n, both in the uniformly quasiregular case and in the polynomial type case. The aim is to show that the boundary of I(f) is the Julia set J(f) when the latter is defined, and shares properties with the Julia set when J(f) is not defined.
Let $f$ and $g$ be two quasiregular maps in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that are of transcendental type and also satisfy $f\circ g =g \circ f$. We show that if the fast escaping sets of those functions are contained in their respective Julia sets then those two functions must have the same Julia set. We also obtain the same conclusion about commuting quasimeromorphic functions with infinite backward orbit of infinity. Furthermore we show that permutable quasiregular functions of the form $f$ and $g=ϕ\circ f$, where $ϕ$ is a quasiconformal map, have the same Julia sets and that polynomial type quasiregular …
We consider accumulation of periodic points in local uniformly quasiregular dynamics. Given a local uniformly quasiregular mapping $f$ with a countable and closed set of isolated essential singularities and their accumulation points on a closed Riemannian manifold, we show that points in the Julia set are accumulated by periodic points. If, in addition, the Fatou set is non-empty and connected, the accumulation is by periodic points in the Julia set itself. We also give sufficient conditions for the density of repelling periodic points.
The Fatou-Julia theory for rational functions has been extended both to transcendental meromorphic functions and more recently to several different types of quasiregular mappings in higher dimensions. We extend the iterative theory to quasimeromorphic mappings with an essential singularity at infinity and at least one pole, constructing the Julia set for these maps. We show that this Julia set shares many properties with those for transcendental meromorphic functions and for quasiregular mappings of punctured space.
Rational semigroups were introduced by Hinkkanen and Martin as a generalization of the iteration of a single rational map. There has subsequently been much interest in the study of rational semigroups. Quasiregular semigroups were introduced shortly after rational semigroups as analogues in higher real dimensions, but have received far less attention. Each map in a quasiregular semigroup must necessarily be a uniformly quasiregular map. While there is a completely viable theory for the iteration of uniformly quasiregular maps, it is a highly non-trivial matter to construct them. In this paper,…
Complex dynamics deals with the iteration of holomorphic functions. As is well- known, the first functions to be studied which gave non-trivial dynamics were quadratic polynomials, which produced beautiful computer generated pictures of Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set. In the same spirit, this article aims to study the dynamics of the simplest non-trivial quasiregular mappings. These are mappings in R^2 which are a composition of a quadratic polynomial and an affine stretch.
We show that if a compact, connected, and oriented $n$-manifold $M$ without boundary admits a non-constant non-injective uniformly quasiregular self-map, then the dimension of the real singular cohomology ring $H^*(M; \mathbb{R})$ of $M$ is bounded from above by $2^n$. This is a positive answer to a dynamical counterpart of the Bonk-Heinonen conjecture on the cohomology bound for quasiregularly elliptic manifolds. The proof is based on an intermediary result that, if $M$ is not a rational homology sphere, then each such uniformly quasiregular self-map on $M$ has a Julia set of positive Lebesgu…
Linearization is a well-known concept in complex dynamics. If $p$ is a polynomial and $z_0$ is a repelling fixed point, then there is an entire function $L$ which conjugates $p$ to the linear map $z\mapsto p'(z_0)z$. This notion of linearization carries over into the quasiregular setting, in the context of repelling fixed points of uniformly quasiregular mappings. In this article, we investigate how linearizers arising from the same uqr mapping and the same repelling fixed point are related. In particular, any linearizer arising from a uqr solution to a Schröder equation is shown to be automor…
This article studies the iterative behaviour of a quasiregular mapping S:\R^d\to\R^d that is an analogue of a sine function. We prove that the periodic points of S form a dense subset of \R^d. We also show that the Julia set of this map is \R^d in the sense that the forward orbit under S of any non-empty open set is the whole space \R^d. The map S was constructed by Bergweiler and Eremenko who proved that the escaping set I(S) is also dense in \R^d.
This article concerns the iteration of quasiregular mappings on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and entire functions on $\mathbb{C}$. It is shown that there are always points at which the iterates of a quasiregular map tend to infinity at a controlled rate. Moreover, an asymptotic rate of escape result is proved that is new even for transcendental entire functions. Let $f:\mathbb{R}^d\to\mathbb{R}^d$ be quasiregular of transcendental type. Using novel methods of proof, we generalise results of Rippon and Stallard in complex dynamics to show that the Julia set of $f$ contains points at which the iterates $f^n$ …
We establish the existence and fundamental properties of the equilibrium measure in uniformly quasiregular dynamics. We show that a uniformly quasiregular endomorphism $f$ of degree at least 2 on a closed Riemannian manifold admits an equilibrium measure $μ_f$, which is balanced and invariant under $f$ and non-atomic, and whose support agrees with the Julia set of $f$. Furthermore we show that $f$ is strongly mixing with respect to the measure $μ_f$. We also characterize the measure $μ_f$ using an approximation property by iterated pullbacks of points under $f$ up to a set of exceptional initi…
We define a quasi-Fatou component of a quasiregular map as a connected component of the complement of the Julia set. A domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called hollow if it has a bounded complementary component. We show that for each $d \geq 2$ there exists a quasiregular map of transcendental type $f: \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}^d$ with a quasi-Fatou component which is hollow. Suppose that $U$ is a hollow quasi-Fatou component of a quasiregular map of transcendental type. We show that if $U$ is bounded, then $U$ has many properties in common with a multiply connected Fatou component of a transcende…
We consider the iteration of quasiregular maps of transcendental type from $\mathbb{R}^d$ to $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular we study quasi-Fatou components, which are defined as the connected components of the complement of the Julia set. Many authors have studied the components of the Fatou set of a transcendental entire function, and our goal in this paper is to generalise some of these results to quasi-Fatou components. First, we study the number of complementary components of quasi-Fatou components, generalising, and slightly strengthening, a result of Kisaka and Shishikura. Second, we stud…
In this paper we study, for the first time, Julia limiting directions of quasiregular mappings in $\mathbb{R}^n$ of transcendental-type. First, we give conditions under which every direction is a Julia limiting direction. Along the way, our methods show that if a quasi-Fatou component contains a sectorial domain, then there is a polynomial bound on the growth in the sector. Second, we give a contribution to the inverse problem in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of determining which compact subsets of $S^2$ can give rise to Julia limiting directions. The methods here will require showing that certain sectorial …
We extend results about the dimension of the radial Julia set of certain exponential functions to quasiregular Zorich maps in higher dimensions. Our results improve on previous estimates of the dimension also in the special case of exponential functions.
For 0 < c < 1/e the Julia set of f(z) = c exp(z) is an uncountable union of pairwise disjoint simple curves tending to infinity [Devaney and Krych 1984], the Hausdorff dimension of this set is two [McMullen 1987], but the set of curves without endpoints has Hausdorff dimension one [Karpinska 1999]. We show that these results have three-dimensional analogues when the exponential function is replaced by a quasiregular self-map of three-space introduced by Zorich.
If $f:\mathbb{R}^3 \to \mathbb{R}^3$ is a uniformly quasiregular mapping with Julia set $J(f)$ a genus $g$ Cantor set, for $g\geq 1$, then for any linearizer $L$ at any repelling periodic point of $f$, the fast escaping set $A(L)$ consists of a spiders' web structure containing embedded genus $g$ tori on any sufficiently large scale. In other words, $A(L)$ contains a spiders' web of doughnuts. This type of structure is specific to higher dimensions, and cannot happen for the fast escaping set of a transcendental entire function in the plane. We also show that if $f:\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^…
