Starting from the generalized pp waves that are exact vacuum solutions of general relativity with a cosmological constant, we construct a new family of exact vacuum solutions of Poincaré gauge theory, the generalized pp waves with torsion. The ansatz for torsion is chosen in accordance with the wave nature of the solutions. For a subfamily of these solutions, the metric is dynamically determined by the torsion.
We resolve a problem of finding the Poincare symmetries from hamiltonian gauge symmetries constructed through a canonical procedure of handling constrained systems. Through the use of Noether identities corresponding to the symmetries, we motivate a procedure of finding the map between the hamiltonian and Poincare gauge parameters. Using this map, we show that the Poincare and hamiltonian gauge symmetries are equivalent, modulo trivial gauge transformations.
We provide an exact mapping between the Galilian gauge theory, recently advocated by us \cite{BMM1, BMM2, BM}, and the Poincare gauge theory. Applying this correspondence we provide a vielbein approach to the geometric formulation of Newton's gravity where no ansatze or additional conditions are required.
We review the basics and the current status of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. The general dynamical scheme of Poincaré gauge gravity (PG) is formulated, and its physical consequences are outlined. In particular, we discuss exact solutions with and without torsion, highlight the cosmological aspects, and consider the probing of the spacetime geometry.
Foundations of the Poincaré-gauge theory of gravity are developed. It is shown that the Poincaré-gauge field consists of two components: the translational gauge field ($t$-field), which is generated by the energy-momentum current of external fields, and the rotational gauge field ($r$-field), which is generated by the sum of the angular and spin momentum currents of external fields. Therefore, a physical field generated by the angular momentum of a rotating mass should exist.
We discuss in detail how string-inspired lineal gravity can be formulated as a gauge theory based on the centrally extended Poincaré group in $(1+1)$ dimensions. Matter couplings are constructed in a gauge invariant fashion, both for point particles and Fermi fields. A covariant tensor notation is developed in which gauge invariance of the formalism is manifest.
We demonstrate that Einstein's general relativity theory arises as a special case in the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity under the assumption of a suitable nonminimal coupling of matter to the Riemann-Cartan geometry of spacetime.
A class of Siklos waves, representing exact vacuum solutions of general relativity with a cosmological constant, is extended to a new class of Siklos waves with torsion, defined in the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory. Three particular exact vacuum solutions of this type, the generalized Kaigorodov, the homogeneous and the exponential solution, are explicitly constructed.
General criteria for the existence of conformally flat Riemannian solutions in 3D Poincaré gauge theory without matter are formulated. Using these criteria, we show that the Oliva-Tempo-Troncoso black hole, a solution of the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Town\-send gravity, is also an exact vacuum solution of the Poincaré gauge theory. The related conserved charges, calculated from the Hamiltonian boundary term, are shown to satisfy the first law of black hole thermodynamics. The form of the boundary term is verified by using the covariant Hamiltonian approach.
We outline the results of the canonical analysis of the three-dimensional Poincaré gauge theory, defined by the general parity-invariant Lagrangian with eight free parameters [11]. In the scalar sector, containing scalar or pseudoscalar (A)dS modes, the stability of the canonical structure under linearization is used to identify dynamically acceptable values of the parameters.
We give an introductory overview of the classical Poincaré gauge theory of gravity formulated on the spacetime manifold that carries the Riemann-Cartan geometry with nontrivial curvature and torsion. After discussing the basic mathematical structures at an elementary level in the framework of the standard tensor analysis, we formulate the general dynamical scheme of Poincaré gauge gravity for the class of Yang-Mills type models, and consider a selected number of physically interesting consequences of this theory.
We analyze the near horizon symmetry of the extremal Kerr black hole within the framework of Poincaré gauge theory (PG) for two important limiting cases: Riemannian and teleparallel solution. We show that the algebra of canonical generators is realized by Virasoro algebra, with central charge which depends on the black hole horizon radius . The conformal entropy of the black hole is obtained via Cardy formula.
We derive the exact gravitational wave solutions in a general class of quadratic Poincaré gauge gravity models. The Lagrangian includes all possible linear and quadratic invariants constructed from the torsion and the curvature, including the parity odd terms. The ansatz for the gravitational wave configuration and the properties of the wave solutions are patterned following the corresponding ansatz and the properties of the plane-fronted electromagnetic wave.
In the framework of the gauge theory based on the Poincaré symmetry group, the gravitational field is described in terms of the coframe and the local Lorentz connection. Considered as gauge field potentials, they give rise to the corresponding field strength which are naturally identified with the torsion and the curvature on the Riemann--Cartan spacetime. We study the class of quadratic Poincaré gauge gravity models with the most general Yang--Mills type Lagrangian which contains all possible parity-even and parity-odd invariants built from the torsion and the curvature. Exact vacuum solution…
It is shown that gravity on the line can be described by the two dimensional (2D) Hilbert-Einstein Lagrangian supplemented by a kinetic term for the coframe and a translational {\it boundary} term. The resulting model is equivalent to a Yang-Mills theory of local {\it translations} and frozen Lorentz gauge degrees. We will show that this restricted Poincaré gauge model in 2 dimensions is completely integrable. {\it Exact} wave, charged black hole, and `dilaton' solutions are then readily found. In vacuum, the integrability of the {\it general} 2D Poincaré gauge theory is formally proved along …
Basic aspects of the Hamiltonian structure of the parity-violating Poincaré gauge theory are studied. We found all possible primary constraints, identified the corresponding critical parameters, and constructed the generic form of the canonical Hamiltonian. In addition to being important in their own right, these results offer dynamical information that is essential for a proper understanding of the particle spectrum of the theory, calculated in the weak field approximation around the Minkowski background.
We analyse the parity violation issue in the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity for the two classes of models which are built as natural extensions of the Einstein-Cartan theory. The conservation laws of the matter currents are revisited and we clarify the derivation of the effective Einstein field equation and the structure of the effective energy-momentum current for arbitrary matter sources.
A family of exact vacuum solutions, representing generalized plane waves propagating on the (anti-)de Sitter background, is constructed in the framework of Poincaré gauge theory. The wave dynamics is defined by the general Lagrangian that includes all parity even and parity odd invariants up to the second order in the gauge field strength. The structure of the solution shows that the wave metric significantly depends on the spacetime torsion.
The Poincaré (inhomogeneous Lorentz) group underlies special relativity. In these lectures a consistent formalism is developed allowing an appropriate gauging of the Poincaré group. The physical laws are formulated in terms of points, orthonormal tetrad frames, and components of the matter fields with respect to these frames. The laws are postulated to be gauge invariant under local Poincaré transformations. This implies the existence of 4 translational gauge potentials ${e}^α$ (``gravitons") and 6 Lorentz gauge potentials $Γ^{αβ}$ (``rotons") and the coupling of the momentum current and the s…
The canonical generator $G$ of local symmetries in Poincaré gauge theory is constructed as an integral over a spatial section $Σ$ of spacetime. Its regularity (differentiability) on the phase space is ensured by adding a suitable surface term, an integral over the boundary of $Σ$ at infinity, which represents the asymptotic canonical charge. For black hole solutions, $Σ$ has two boundaries, one at infinity and the other at horizon. It is shown that the canonical charge at horizon defines entropy, whereas the regularity of $G$ implies the first law of black hole thermodynamics.
We develop a Hamiltonian formalism suitable to be applied to gauge theories in the presence of Gravitation, and to Gravity itself when considered as a gauge theory. It is based on a nonlinear realization of the Poincaré group, taken as the local spacetime group of the gravitational gauge theory, with $SO(3)$ as the classification subgroup. The Wigner--like rotation induced by the nonlinear approach singularizes out the role of time and allows to deal with ordinary $SO(3)$ vectors. We apply the general results to the Einstein--Cartan action. We study the constraints and we obtain Einstein's cla…
Using a Hamiltonian approach, we introduce black hole entropy for Kerr-AdS spacetimes with torsion as the canonical charge on horizon. In spite of a completely different geometric setting with respect to GR, the resulting thermodynamic variables, energy, angular momentum and entropy, are shown to be proportional to the corresponding GR expressions. The validity of the first law is confirmed.
The analysis of the validity of Birkhoff's theorem about the uniqueness of the spherically symmetric solution of the gravitational field equations is extended to the framework of the Poincaré gauge gravity theory. The class of models with the most general Lagrangians of the Yang-Mills type constructed from all possible quadratic invariants of the curvature and the torsion is considered, including both parity-even and parity-odd sectors. We find the models in which the weak and strong versions of the generalized Birkhoff theorem are valid, by making use of the double duality technique.
A systematic method is presented for determining the conditions on the parameters in the action of a parity-preserving gauge theory of gravity for it to contain no ghost or tachyon particles. The technique naturally accommodates critical cases in which the parameter values lead to additional gauge invariances. The method is implemented as a computer program, and is used here to investigate the particle content of parity-conserving Poincaré gauge theory, which we compare with previous results in the literature. We find 450 critical cases that are free of ghosts and tachyons, and we further iden…
We present 48 further examples, in addition to the 10 identified in [1], of ghost-and-tachyon-free critical cases of parity-conserving Poincaré gauge theories of gravity (PGT$^+$) that are also power-counting renormalizable (PCR). This is achieved by extending the range of critical cases considered. Of the new PCR theories, seven have 2 massless degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) in propagating modes and a massive $0^-$ or $2^-$ mode, eight have only 2 massless d.o.f., and 33 have only massive mode(s). We also clarify the treatment of nonpropagating modes in determining whether a theory is PCR.
We discuss the choice of the Lagrangian in the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. Drawing analogies to earlier de Sitter gauge models, we point out the possibility of deriving the Einstein-Cartan Lagrangian {\it without} cosmological term from a {\it modified} quadratic curvature invariant of {\it topological} type.
We take a Dirac field non-minimally coupled to the gravitational field within the framework of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity with torsion and curvature. We study the subcase of "weak" gravity, that is, the gravitational Lagrangian depends only linearly on the curvature and quadratically on the torsion. We include all pieces in curvature and torsion that are of odd parity. The second field equation of gravity is derived by varying the Lorentz connection. We solve it with respect to the torsion and decompose the first field equation of gravity and the Dirac equation into Einsteinian piece…
Starting from matter lagrangean containing higher order derivative than the first, we construct the Poincare gauge theory by localising the Poincare symmetry of the matter theory. The construction is shown to follow the usual geometric procedure of gravitational coupling, thereby buttressing the geometric interpretation of the Poincare gauge theory.

We explore Sakharov's seminal idea that gravitational dynamics is induced by the quantum corrections from the matter sector. This was the starting point of the view that gravity has an emergent origin, which soon gained impetus due to the advent of black hole thermodynamics. In the generalized framework of Riemann--Cartan spacetime with both curvature and torsion, the induced gravitational action is obtained for free nonminimally coupled scalar and Dirac fields. For a realistic matter content, the induced Newton constant is obtained to be of the magnitude of the ultraviolet cutoff, which impli…
A Hamiltonian variational approach is used to study asymptotic charges and entropy of Kerr-AdS black holes in the general Poincaré gauge theory, with both even and odd parity modes. The results turn out to be the same as those found earlier in the sector of parity invariant Lagrangians.
In (1+2)-dimensional Poincaré gauge gravity, we start from a Lagrangian depending on torsion and curvature which includes additionally {\em translational} and {\em Lorentzian} Chern-Simons terms. Limiting ourselves to to a specific subcase, the Mielke-Baekler (MB) model, we derive the corresponding field equations (of Einstein-Cartan-Chern-Simons type) and find the general vacuum solution. We determine the properties of this solution, in particular its mass and its angular momentum. For vanishing torsion, we recover the BTZ-solution. We also derive the general conformally flat vacuum solution …
In the gauge theory of gravity based on the Poincare group (the semidirect product of the Lorentz group and the spacetime translations) the mass (energy-momentum) and the spin are treated on an equal footing as the sources of the gravitational field. The corresponding spacetime manifold carries the Riemann-Cartan geometric structure with the nontrivial curvature and torsion. We describe some aspects of the classical Poincare gauge theory of gravity. Namely, the Lagrange-Noether formalism is presented in full generality, and the family of quadratic (in the curvature and the torsion) models is a…
A Hamiltonian approach to black hole entropy is used to study Riemannian Kerr-AdS solutions in the general, parity-violating Poincaré gauge theory. Entropy and the asymptotic charges are entirely determined by the parity-even sector of the theory, whereas the parity-odd contributions vanish. Entropy is found to be proportional to the horizon area, and the first law of black hole thermodynamics is confirmed.
The minimal coupling procedure, which is employed in standard Yang-Mills theories, appears to be ambiguous in the case of gravity. We propose a slight modification of this procedure, which removes the ambiguity. Our modification justifies some earlier results concerning the consequences of the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. In particular, the predictions of the Einstein-Cartan theory with fermionic matter are rendered unique.
Our topic concerns a long standing puzzle: the energy of gravitating systems. More precisely we want to consider, for gravitating systems, how to best describe energy-momentum and angular momentum/center-of-mass momentum (CoMM). It is known that these quantities cannot be given by a local density. The modern understanding is that (i) they are quasi-local (associated with a closed 2-surface), (ii) they have no unique formula, (iii) they have no reference frame independent description. In the first part of this work we review some early history, much of it not so well known, on the subject of gr…
We describe a framework for a generalized nonlocal gravity theory inspired by Poincaré gauge theory. Our theory provides a unified description of previous nonlocal extensions of Einstein's theory of gravitation, in particular it allows for a clear geometrical foundation. Furthermore, it incorporates recent simplifications for the ansatz of the nonlocality, which should allow for a systematic study of the impact of nonlocal concepts on observations.
We present a simple proof of the Poincaré gauge invariance of general relativity and Einstein-Cartan theory, in the context of the corresponding bundle of affine frames.
We have shown that two of the most studied models of lineal gravities - Liouville gravity and a ``string-inspired'' model exhibiting the main characteristic features of a black-hole solution - can be formulated as gauge invariant theories of the Poincaré group. The gauge invariant couplings to matter (particles, scalar and spinor fields) and explicit solutions for some matter field configurations, are provided. It is shown that both the models, as well as the couplings to matter, can be obtained as suitable dimensional reductions of a 2+1-dimensional ISO(2,1) gauge invariant theory.
Gauge theories of gravity provide an elegant and promising extension of general relativity. In this paper we show that the Poincaré gauge theory exhibits gravity-induced birefringence under the assumption of a specific gauge invariant nonminimal coupling between torsion and Maxwell's field. Furthermore we give for the first time an explicit expression for the induced phaseshift between two orthogonal polarization modes within the Poincaré framework. Since such a phaseshift can lead to a depolarization of light emitted from an extended source this effect is, in principle, observable. We use whi…

In previous work, starting from the Moyal plane, we formulated interacting theories of matter and gauge fields with only the former fields twisted. In this approach, gauge theories, including the standard model, can be formulated without new gauge degrees of freedom. We show their underlying symmetry algebra to be Poincaré quasi-Hopf . The associated spacetime algebra is hence non-associative.
We study the cosmological effect of the simple scalar-torsion ($0^+$) mode in Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. We find that for the non-constant (affine) curvature case, the early evolution of the torsion density $ρ_T$ has a radiation-like asymptotic behavior of $a^{-4}$ with $a$ representing the scale factor, along with the stable point of the torsion pressure ($P_T$) and density ratio $P_T/ρ_T\rightarrow 1/3$ in the high redshift regime $(z \gg 0)$, which is different from the previous result in the literature. We use the Laurent expansion to resolve the solution. We also illustrate our res…
In this work we review the study of singularities in Poincaré gauge theories of gravity. Since one of the most recent studies uses the appearance of black hole regions of arbitrary dimension as an indicator of singular behaviour, we also give some explicit examples of these structures and study how particles behave around them.
In this work, we construct the logical framework of the Poincaré gauge gravity cosmology based on five postulations, and introduce the modified redshift relation within this framework. Then we solve a system with quadratic action and some other assumptions to get an analytic solution on background level. The evolution of the Universe on background can be reproduced from this solution without hypothesizing dark energy. Further, we use the type Ia supernova data set JLA to test the effect of the modified redshift relation under the constraints of system parameters. The results show that the cons…
We construct Kaluza--Klein-type models with a de Sitter or Minkowski bundle in the de Sitter or Poincaré gauge theory of gravity, respectively. A manifestly gauge-invariant formalism has been given. The gravitational dynamics is constructed by the geometry of the de Sitter or Minkowski bundle and a global section which plays an important role in the gauge-invariant formalism. Unlike the old Kaluza--Klein-type models of gauge theory of gravity, a suitable cosmological term can be obtained in the Lagrangian of our models and the models in the spin-current-free and torsion-free limit will come ba…
For the quadratic Poincaré gauge theory of gravity (PG) we consider the FLRW cosmologies using an isotropic Bianchi representation. Here the considered cosmologies are for the general case: all the even and odd parity terms of the quadratic PG with their respective scalar and pseudoscalar parameters are allowed with no \emph{a priori} restrictions on their values. With the aid of a manifestly homogeneous and isotropic representation, an effective Lagrangian gives the second order dynamical equations for the gauge potentials. An equivalent set of first order equations for the observables is pre…
In Poincare gauge theory of gravity, in addition to mass-energy content, spin is also a source for gravitational interactions. Although the effects of spin are negligible at low energies, they can play a crucial role at very early universe when the spin density was very high. In this paper by choosing a suitable Lagrangian for Poincare gauge theory of gravity, and suitable energy-momentum and spin density tensors, we show that the effects of spin and torsion can lead to a inflationary phase without the need for any additional fields. No fine tuning of parameters is required in this setup. We a…
The Hamiltonian constraint formalism is used to obtain the first explicit complete analysis of non-trivial viable dynamic modes for the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. Two modes with propagating spin-zero torsion are analyzed. The explicit form of the Hamiltonian is presented. All constraints are obtained and classified. The Lagrange multipliers are derived. It is shown that a massive spin-$0^-$ mode has normal dynamical propagation but the associated massless $0^-$ is pure gauge. The spin-$0^+$ mode investigated here is also viable in general. Both modes exhibit a simple type of ``constrain…
We study the coupling of the gravitational action, which is a linear combination of the Hilbert-Palatini term and the quadratic torsion term, to the action of Dirac fermions. The system possesses local Poincare invariance and hence belongs to Poincare gauge theory with matter. The complete Hamiltonian analysis of the theory is carried out without gauge fixing but under certain ansatz on the coupling parameters, which leads to a consistent connection dynamics with second-class constraints and torsion. After performing a partial gauge fixing, all second-class constraints can be solved, and a SU(…
We investigate the equation of state (EoS) of the scalar-torsion mode in Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. We concentrate on two cases with the constant curvature solution and positive kinetic energy, respectively. In the former, we find that the torsion EoS has different values in the various stages of the universe. In particular, it behaves like the radiation (matter) EoS of $w_r=1/3$ ($w_m=0$) in the radiation (matter) dominant epoch, while in the late time the torsion density is supportive for the accelerating universe. In the latter, our numerical analysis shows that in general the EoS ha…
We derive a new exact static and spherically symmetric vacuum solution in the framework of the Poincaré gauge field theory with dynamical massless torsion. This theory is built in such a form that allows to recover General Relativity when the first Bianchi identity of the model is fulfilled by the total curvature. The solution shows a Reissner-Nordström type geometry with a Coulomb-like curvature provided by the torsion field. It is also shown the existence of a generalized Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solution when additional electromagnetic fields and/or a cosmological constant are coupled t…
Within the framework of the minimum quadratic Poincare gauge theory of gravity in the Riemann-Cartan spacetime the dynamics of homogeneous anisotropic Bianchi types I-IX spinning-fluid cosmological models is investigated. A basic equation set for these models is obtained and analyzed. In particular, exact solutions for the Bianchi type-I spinning-fluid and Bianchi type-V perfect-fluid models are found in analytic form.
The general Poincaré gauge cosmology given by a nine-parameter gravitational Lagrangian with ghost- and tachyon-free conditions is studied from the perspective of field theory. By introducing new variables for replacing two (pseudo-) scalar torsions, the Poincaré gauge cosmological system can be recast into a gravitational system coupled to two-scalar fields with a potential up to quartic-order. We discussed the possibility of this system producing two types of inflation without any extra inflatons. The hybrid inflation with a first-order phase transition can be ruled out, while the slow rollo…
The class of accelerated and rotating reference frames has been studied on the basis of generalized Fermi-Walker coordinates. We obtain the infinitesimal transformations connecting any two of these frames and also their commutation relations. We thus have an infinite dimensional extension of the Poincaré algebra and, although it turns out to be Abelian extension, and hence trivial, it is noteworthy that, contrarily to Lorentz boosts, acceleration and rotational boost generators commute with each other and with the generators of Poincaré group as well.
Using a recently found black hole solution in the framework of the Poincar{é} gauge theory of gravity, we study gravitational lensing for a system where the lens is a static spherically symmetric black hole. By analyzing the equations of motion for light rays in a space-time with torsion, we derive the deflection angle as the light emitted from a source pass through near the black hole and numerically solve the resulting integral. We also study the effects of torsion on the position of images. The results show that the presence of torsion slightly alters both the deflection angle and position …
