In the framework of the weak coupling renormalization group technique we examine the possible instabilities of the extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model with both intrachain and interchain electron-electron interactions, including the influence of umklapp scattering and the coupling of spins to a magnetic field. In the limit of purely repulsive intrachain interactions, we confirm the passage from singlet d-wave like superconductivity to an inhomogeneous FFLO state under magnetic field. The passage is accompanied by an anomalous increase of the upper critical field that scales with the antinesting distance from the quantum critical point joining superconductivity to antiferromagnetism in the phase diagram, as well as the strength of interactions. Adding weak repulsive interchain interactions promotes the passage from singlet to triplet $f$-wave superconductivity which is expanded under field by the development of a triplet FFLO state with zero angular momentum projection for the Cooper pairs. The connection between theory and experiments on the anomalous upper critical field in the Bechgaard salts is discussed.
Most of solid-state spin physics arising from spin-orbit coupling, from fundamental phenomena to industrial applications, relies on symmetry-protected degeneracies. So does the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling, expected to manifest itself in a wide range of antiferromagnetic conductors. Yet, experimental proof of this phenomenon has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate that the Néel state of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeBr$_4$ shows no spin modulation of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, contrary to its paramagnetic state. This is unambiguous evidence for the spin degeneracy of…
This article is a brief review of Zeeman spin-orbit coupling, arising in a low-carrier commensurate Néel antiferromagnet subject to magnetic field. The field tends to lift the degeneracy of the electron spectrum. However, a hidden symmetry protects double degeneracy of Bloch eigenstates at special momenta in the Brillouin zone. The effective transverse $g$-factor vanishes at such points, thus acquiring a substantial momentum dependence, which turns a textbook Zeeman term into a spin-orbit coupling. After describing the symmetry underpinnings of the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling, I compare it with…
In this article, I study magnetic response of electron wavefunctions in a commensurate collinear antiferromagnet. I show that, at a special set of momenta, hidden anti-unitary symmetry protects Kramers degeneracy of Bloch eigenstates against a magnetic field, pointing transversely to staggered magnetization. Hence a substantial momentum dependence of the transverse g-factor in the Zeeman term, turning the latter into a spin-orbit coupling, that may be present in materials from chromium to borocarbides, cuprates, pnictides, as well as organic and heavy fermion conductors.
We study the spin-density-wave instabilities in the quasi-one-dimensional conductor (TMTSF)_2ClO_4. The orientational order of the anions ClO_4 doubles the unit cell and leads to the presence of two electrnic bands at the Fermi level. From the Ginzburg-Landau expansion of the free energy, we determine the low-temperature phase diagram as a function of the strength of the Coulomb potential due to the anions. Upon increasing the anion potential, we first find a SDW phase corresponding to an interband pairing. This SDW phase is rapidly supressed, the metallic phase being then stable down to zero …
Using a renormalization group approach, we determine the phase diagram of an extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model that includes interchain hopping, nesting deviations and both intrachain and interchain repulsive interactions. We find a close proximity of spin-density- and charge-density-wave phases, singlet d-wave and triplet f-wave superconducting phases. There is a striking correspondence between our results and recent puzzling experimental findings in the Bechgaard salts, including the coexistence of spin-density-wave and charge-density-wave phases and the possibility of a trip…
The thermoelectric effect in a two-dimensional (2D) massless Dirac fermion (DF) system at the quantum limit is discussed to verify the prediction of high-performance thermopower in an organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3. Because of relatively large Zeeman splitting in α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, the boundless increase of thermopower at high magnetic fields, predicted without the Zeeman effect, is hardly expected, whereas there appears to be a broad local maximum. This is characteristic of 2D DF systems with Zeeman splitting and is recognized in the previous experiment. In contrast to 3D Dirac/Weyl semimeta…
Using a renormalization group approach, we determine the phase diagram of an extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model that includes interchain hopping, nesting deviations and both intrachain and interchain repulsive interactions. d-wave superconductivity, which dominates over the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase at large nesting deviations, becomes unstable to the benefit of a triplet $f$-wave phase for a weak repulsive interchain backscattering term $g_1^\perp>0$, despite the persistence of dominant SDW correlations in the normal state. Antiferromagnetism becomes unstable against the fo…
Superconductivity of quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors with a quarter-filled band is investigated using the two-loop renormalization group approach to the extended Hubbard model for which both the single electron hopping t_{\perp} and the repulsive interaction V_{\perp} perpendicular to the chains are included. For a four-patches Fermi surface with deviations to perfect nesting, we calculate the response functions for the dominant fluctuations and possible superconducting states. By increasing V_{\perp}, it is shown that a d-wave (singlet) to f-wave (triplet) superconducting state cross…
We present a scenario for the peculiar coexistence of charge fluctuations observed in quasi-2D 1/4-filled organic conductors $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$ in the quantum critical regime where the charge ordering is suppressed down to zero temperature. The scenario is explored in the extended Hubbard model including electron-phonon couplings on an anisotropic triangular lattice. We find that the coexisting fluctuations emerge from two different instabilities, the ``Wigner crystallization on lattice'' driven by the off-site Coulomb repulsion and the charge-density-wave formation due to the nesting of the …
The interference between spin-density-wave and superconducting instabilities in quasi-one-dimensional correlated metals is analyzed using the renormalization group method. At the one-loop level, we show how the interference leads to a continuous crossover from a spin-density-wave state to unconventional superconductivity when deviations from perfect nesting of the Fermi surface exceed a critical value. Singlet pairing between electrons on neighboring stacks is found to be the most favorable symmetry for superconductivity. The consequences of non uniform spin-density-wave pairing on the structu…
Recent experiments on bismuth have uncovered remarkably rich magnetization structure at fields well beyond the regime in which all carriers are expected to reside in the lowest Landau level. Motivated by these findings, we start from a microscopic tight-binding model and derive a low-energy Hamiltonian for the holes and three Dirac electrons pockets in bismuth. We find that an unconventional electron Zeeman effect, overlooked previously, suppresses the quantum limit for the electrons dramatically, giving rise to the observed anomalous magnetization structure. We further study interaction effec…
We consider Zeeman field effects on a Spin Bose-Metal (SBM) phase on a two-leg triangular ladder. This phase was found in a spin-1/2 model with ring exchanges [D. N. Sheng et. al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 79}, 205112 (2009)], and was also proposed to appear in an interacting electronic model with longer-ranged repulsion [Lai et. al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 81}, 045105 (2010)]. Using bosonization of a spinon-gauge theory, we study the stability of the SBM phase and its properties under the field. We also explore phases arising from potential instabilities of the SBM; in all cases, we find a gap to spin-1 …
In this work we use an effective field theory model to investigate doped $\rm (CH)_x$ chains under the influence of an external constant Zeeman magnetic field $B_0$, at zero and finite temperature, in the mean-field approximation and beyond. We consider both homogeneous and inhomogeneous $Δ(x)$ condensates and briefly discuss the possibility of using these materials as partially polarized 1D organic conductors.
In this paper we study theoretically how the local geometry of the Fermi surface (FS) of a layered conductor can affect quantum oscillations in the thermodynamic observables. We introduce a concrete model of the FS of a layered conductor. The model permits us to analyze the characteristic features of quantum oscillatory phenomena in these materials which occure due to local anomalies of the Gaussian curvature of the FS. Our analysis takes into account strong interaction among quasiparticles and we study the effect of this interaction within the framework of Fermi-liquid theory. We show that th…
Superconductivity in the Bechgaard salts series of quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors occurs on the verge of spin-density-wave ordering when hydrostatic pressure is applied. The sequence of instabilities is intimately connected to normal state anomalies in various quantities like the temperature dependence of electrical transport and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We discuss how such a connection takes its origin in the interference between the different pairing mechanisms responsible for antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, a duo that can be comprehended in terms of a weak c…
In this article, I analyze the symmetries and degeneracies of electron eigenstates in a commensurate collinear antiferromagnet. In a magnetic field transverse to the staggered magnetization, a hidden anti-unitary symmetry protects double degeneracy of the Bloch eigenstates at a special set of momenta. In addition to this `Kramers degeneracy' subset, the manifold of momenta, labeling the doubly degenerate Bloch states in the Brillouin zone, may also contain an `accidental degeneracy' subset, that is not protected by symmetry and that may change its shape under perturbation. These degeneracies g…
We briefly review the physics of electronic phases in low dimensional conductors. We begin by introducing the properties of the one-dimensional electron gas model using bosonization and renormalization group methods. We then tackle the influence of interchain coupling and go through the different instabilities of the electron system to the formation of higher dimensional states. The connection with observations made in quasi-one-dimensional organic and inorganic conductors is discussed.
We study the interplay of confining potential, electron-electron interaction, and Zeeman splitting at the edges of fractional quantum Hall liquids, using numerical diagonalization of finite-size systems. The filling factors studied include 1/3, 5/2, 2/5, and 2/3. In the absence of Zeeman splitting and an edge, the first two have spin fully polarized ground states, while the latter two have singlet ground states. We find that with few exceptions, edge instabilities of these systems are triggered by softening of edge spin waves for Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids (1/3, 2/5 and 2/3 liquid…
The hope to realize Majorana fermions at the vortex core of a two dimensional topological superconductor has led to a variety of proposals for devices which exhibit topological superconductivity. Many of these include superconductivity through the proximity effect and therefore require a layer of a conventional superconductor deposited on top of another system, which lends its topological properties\cite{Fu,Sau,Alicea}. The necessity of the superconducting layer poses some technical complications and, in particular, makes it harder to probe the Majorana state. In this work we propose to replac…
We introduce a spinful variant of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with an effective time reversal symmetry, which can be solved exactly in the limit of a large number $N$ of degrees of freedom. At low temperature, its phase diagram includes a compressible non-Fermi liquid and a strongly-correlated spin singlet superconductor that shows a tunable enhancement of the gap ratio predicted by BCS theory. These two phases are separated by a first-order transition, in the vicinity of which a gapless superconducting phase, characterized by a non-zero magnetization, is stabilized upon applying a Zeeman fiel…
We study effects of an external magnetic field on charge ordering in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at quarter filling by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. We find that the Zeeman coupling enhances the charge order correlation, which is prominent when the system is located in the critical regime near the charge ordering transition at zero magnetic field. This behavior is interpreted in terms of the crossover to the fully spin-polarized limit where the model is exactly solvable. Furthermore, by incorporating the interchain Coulomb repulsion, we show that the charge-ordering t…
We summarize the present status of the theories of spin fluctuations in dealing with the anomalous or non-Fermi liquid behavior and unconventional superconductivity in strongly correlated electron systems around their magnetic instabilities or quantum critical points. Arguments are given to indicate that the spin fluctuation mechanisms is the common origin of superconductivity in heavy electron systems, 2-dimensional organic conductors and high-T_c cuprates.
In this review, we attempt to present the most notable aspects of the story of the two chain, highly one-dimensional, organic conductors of the perylene metal-dithiolate series, which have been under investigation since the end of the 1960's until the present time, with the recent discovery of a superconducting phase. We will start with an overview of the developments of the research on this materials and then, after a brief introduction and a survey of the theoretical background, we will describe and discuss the structure, transport and magnetic properties, as well as the low temperature inst…
The Josephson current through a 1D quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions is calculated. We show that the interplay of Rashba and Zeeman interactions gives rise to a supercurrent through the 1D conductor that is anomalous in the sense that it persists in the absence of any phase difference between the two superconducting leads to which it is attached. The electron dispersion asymmetry induced by the Rashba interaction in a Luttinger-liquid wire plays a significant role for poorly transmitting junctions. It is shown that for a weak or moderate electron-electron i…

We performed the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) experiments of the low carrier heavy fermion compound URu2Si2 at high fields up to 34T and at low temperatures down to 30mK. All main SdH branches named alpha, beta and gamma were observed for all the measured field-directions (H // [001] -> [100], [100] -> [110] and [001] -> [110]), indicating that these are attributed to the closed Fermi surfaces with nearly spherical shapes. Anomalous split of branch alpha was detected for the field along the basal plane, and the split immediately disappears by tilting the field to [001] direction, implying a fingerp…

We theoretically study the competition among different electronic phases in molecular conductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X. The ground-state properties of a 3/4-filled extended Hubbard model with the $κ$-type geometry are investigated by a variational Monte Carlo method. We find various competing phases: dimer-Mott insulator, polar charge-ordered insulator, 3-fold charge-ordered metal, and superconductivity, whose pairing symmetry is an "extended-$s$+$d_{x^2-y^2}$"-wave type. Our results show that the superconducting phase is stabilized not on the verge of the Mott metal-insulator transition but nea…
We use the renormalization group method to examine the effect of phonon mediated interaction on d-wave superconductivity, as driven by spin fluctuations in a quasi-one-dimensional electron system. The influence of a tight-binding electron-phonon interaction on the spin-density-wave and d-wave superconducting instability lines is calculated for arbitrary temperature, phonon frequency and antinesting of the Fermi surface. The domain of electron-phonon coupling strength where spin-density-wave order becomes unstable against the formation of a bond-order-wave or Peierls state is determined at weak …
When a 2D superconductor is subjected to a strong in-plane magnetic field, Zeeman polarization of the Fermi surface can give rise to inhomogeneous FFLO order with a spatially modulated gap. Further increase of the magnetic field eventually drives the system into a normal metal state. Here, we perform a renormalization group analysis of this quantum phase transition, starting from an appropriate low-energy theory recently introduced by Piazza et al. (Ref.1). We compute one-loop flow equations within the controlled dimensional regularization scheme with fixed dimension of Fermi surface, expandin…
When an electronic system is subjected to a sufficiently strong magnetic field that the cyclotron energy is much larger than the Fermi energy, the system enters the "extreme quantum limit" (EQL) and becomes susceptible to a number of instabilities. Bringing a three-dimensional electronic system deeply into the EQL can be difficult, however, since it requires a small Fermi energy, large magnetic field, and low disorder. Here we present an experimental study of the EQL in lightly-doped single crystals of strontium titanate, which remain good bulk conductors down to very low temperatures and high…
