Most of solid-state spin physics arising from spin-orbit coupling, from fundamental phenomena to industrial applications, relies on symmetry-protected degeneracies. So does the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling, expected to manifest itself in a wide range of antiferromagnetic conductors. Yet, experimental proof of this phenomenon has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate that the Néel state of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeBr$_4$ shows no spin modulation of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, contrary to its paramagnetic state. This is unambiguous evidence for the spin degeneracy of Landau levels, a direct manifestation of the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling. Likewise, we show that spin modulation is absent in electron-doped Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$, which evidences the presence of Néel order in this cuprate superconductor even at optimal doping. Obtained on two very different materials, our results demonstrate the generic character of the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling.
This article is a brief review of Zeeman spin-orbit coupling, arising in a low-carrier commensurate Néel antiferromagnet subject to magnetic field. The field tends to lift the degeneracy of the electron spectrum. However, a hidden symmetry protects double degeneracy of Bloch eigenstates at special momenta in the Brillouin zone. The effective transverse $g$-factor vanishes at such points, thus acquiring a substantial momentum dependence, which turns a textbook Zeeman term into a spin-orbit coupling. After describing the symmetry underpinnings of the Zeeman spin-orbit coupling, I compare it with…
In this article, I study magnetic response of electron wavefunctions in a commensurate collinear antiferromagnet. I show that, at a special set of momenta, hidden anti-unitary symmetry protects Kramers degeneracy of Bloch eigenstates against a magnetic field, pointing transversely to staggered magnetization. Hence a substantial momentum dependence of the transverse g-factor in the Zeeman term, turning the latter into a spin-orbit coupling, that may be present in materials from chromium to borocarbides, cuprates, pnictides, as well as organic and heavy fermion conductors.
In this paper we study theoretically how the local geometry of the Fermi surface (FS) of a layered conductor can affect quantum oscillations in the thermodynamic observables. We introduce a concrete model of the FS of a layered conductor. The model permits us to analyze the characteristic features of quantum oscillatory phenomena in these materials which occure due to local anomalies of the Gaussian curvature of the FS. Our analysis takes into account strong interaction among quasiparticles and we study the effect of this interaction within the framework of Fermi-liquid theory. We show that th…
In the framework of the weak coupling renormalization group technique we examine the possible instabilities of the extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model with both intrachain and interchain electron-electron interactions, including the influence of umklapp scattering and the coupling of spins to a magnetic field. In the limit of purely repulsive intrachain interactions, we confirm the passage from singlet d-wave like superconductivity to an inhomogeneous FFLO state under magnetic field. The passage is accompanied by an anomalous increase of the upper critical field that scales with …
We study the Mott transition, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in layered organic conductors using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory for the frustrated Hubbard model. A d-wave superconducting phase appears between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t=0.3-0.7 $, or between a nonmagnetic Mott insulator (spin liquid) and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t\geq 0.8$, in agreement with experiments on layered organic conductors including $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$. These phases are separated by a strong first order transition. The phase diagram gives much insight into …
We show that electron wave functions in a quasi-two-dimensional conductor in a parallel magnetic field are always localized on conducting layers. Wave functions and electron spectrum in a quantum limit, where the "sizes" of quasi-classical electron orbits are of the order of nano-scale distances between the layers, are determined. AC infrared measurements to investigate Fermi surfaces and to test Fermi liquid theory in Q2D organic and high-Tc materials in high magnetic fields, H = 10-45 T, are suggested.
In the organic charge transfer salt k-(BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3 the metallic conductivity is provided by itinerant pi-electrons in the layers of BETS molecules, whereas magnetization is largely dominated by the localized d-electrons of the Mn2+ ions in the insulating anionic layers. We study magnetic properties of the compound in its low-temperature, Mott-insulating state by means of magnetic torque technique. The complex behavior of the torque can be qualitatively explained by the coexistence of two weakly interacting magnetic subsystems associated with paramagnetic d-electron spins and antiferromag…
The $κ$-(ET)$_2$X layered conductors (where ET stands for BEDT-TTF) are studied within the dimer model as a function of the diagonal hopping $t^\prime$ and Hubbard repulsion $U$. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity are investigated at zero temperature using variational cluster perturbation theory (V-CPT). For large $U$, Néel antiferromagnetism exists for $t' < t'_{c2}$, with $t'_{c2}\sim 0.9$. For fixed $t'$, as $U$ is decreased (or pressure increased), a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting phase appears. When $U$ is decreased further, the a $d_{xy}$ order takes over. There is a critical…
While the optical properties of the superconducting salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$NH$_4$Hg(SCN)$_4$ remain metallic down to 2 K, in the non-superconducting K-analog a pseudogap develops at frequencies of about 200 cm$^{-1}$ for temperatures T < 200 K. Based on exact diagonalisation calculations on an extended Hubbard model at quarter-filling we argue that fluctuations associated with short range charge ordering are responsible for the observed low-frequency feature. The different ground states, including superconductivity, are a consequence of the proximity of these compounds to a quantum phase charg…
Two-dimensional magnetic materials have recently attracted great interest due to their unique functions as the electric field control of a magnetic phase and the anomalous spin Hall effect. For such remarkable functions, a spin-orbit coupling (SOC) serves as an essential ingredient. Here we report a giant positive magnetoresistance in a layered magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe2, which is a manifestation of the subtle combination of the SOC and Zeeman-type spin splitting. When the carrier concentration approaches the critical value of 2.5\times10^18 cm^-3, a sizable positive magnetoresistance of ~…
Characteristic features of transverse transport along the $a^*$ axis in the NbSe$_3$ charge-density-wave conductor are studied. At low temperatures, the $I$-$V$ characteristics of both layered structures and NbSe$_3$-NbSe$_3$ point contacts exhibit a strong peak of dynamic conductivity at zero bias voltage. In addition, the $I$-$V$ characteristics of layered structures exhibit a series of peaks that occur at voltages equal to multiples of the double Peierls gap. The conductivity behavior observed in the experiment resembles that reported for the interlayer tunneling in Bi-2212 high-$T_c$ super…
We investigate the influence of Landau quantization on the superconducting instability for a pure layered superconductor in the magnetic field directed perpendicular to the layers. We demonstrate that the quantization corrections to the Cooper-pairing kernel with finite Zeeman spin splitting promote the formation of the nonuniform state in which the order parameter is periodically modulated along the magnetic field, i.e., between the layers (Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov [FFLO] state). The conventional uniform state experiences such a quantization-induced FFLO instability at low temperature…
The specific character of longitudinal collective electromagnetic oscillations in a layered conductor with the quasi-two-dimensional electron energy spectrum has been analyzed.
In this article, I analyze the symmetries and degeneracies of electron eigenstates in a commensurate collinear antiferromagnet. In a magnetic field transverse to the staggered magnetization, a hidden anti-unitary symmetry protects double degeneracy of the Bloch eigenstates at a special set of momenta. In addition to this `Kramers degeneracy' subset, the manifold of momenta, labeling the doubly degenerate Bloch states in the Brillouin zone, may also contain an `accidental degeneracy' subset, that is not protected by symmetry and that may change its shape under perturbation. These degeneracies g…
The layered organic compounds, kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2X (X=Cl, Br) are metals at ambient temperatures. At low temperatures, the Cl compound is a weakly ferromagnetic Mott insulator while the isostructural Br compound is a superconductor. We find by conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) and antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) an extreme anisotropy of spin transport and magnetic interactions in these materials. In the metallic state spin diffusion is confined to single molecular layers within the spin lifetime of 10^-9 s. Electrons diffuse several hundreds of nm without hopping to the ne…
We present magnetoresistance studies of the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $κ$-(BETS)$_2$Mn[N(CN)$_2$]$_3$, where BETS stands for bis\-(ethylene\-dithio)\-tetra\-selena\-fulvalene. Under a moderate pressure of 1.4\,kbar, required for stabilizing the metallic ground state, Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations, associated with a classical and a magnetic-breakdown cyclotron orbits on the cylindrical Fermi surface, have been found at fields above 10\,T. The effective cyclotron masses evaluated from the temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitudes reveal strong renormalization due to m…
A high frequency (111.2-420 GHz) electron spin resonance study of the inter-layer (perpendicular) spin diffusion as a function of pressure and temperature is presented in the conducting phases of the layered organic compounds, κ-(BEDT-TTF)2-Cu[N(CN)2]X (κ-ET2-X), X=Cl or Br. The resolved ESR lines of adjacent layers at high temperatures and high frequencies allows for the determination of the inter-layer cross spin relaxation time, Tx and the intrinsic spin relaxation time, T2 of single layers. In the bad metal phase spin diffusion is two-dimensional, i.e. spins are not hopping to adjacent lay…
Ground state properties of the spin$-1/2$ Falicov-Kimball model on a triangular lattice in the presence of uniform external magnetic field are explored. Both the orbital and the Zeeman field-induced effects are taken into account and in each unit cell only rational flux fractions are considered. Numerical results, obtained with the help of Monte Carlo simulation algorithm, reveal that the ground state properties strongly depend on the onsite Coulomb correlation between itinerant and localized electrons, orbital magnetic field as well as the Zeeman splitting. Strikingly, for the on-site Coulomb…
Several experimental studies have shown the presence of spatially inhomogeneous phase coexistence of superconducting and non superconducting domains in low dimensional organic superconductors. The superconducting properties of these systems are found to be strongly dependent on the amount of disorder introduced in the sample regardless of its origin. The suppression of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ shows clear discrepancy with the result expected from the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law giving the behavior of $T_c$ with impurities. Based on the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, w…
We explore superconducting instability for a clean two-band layered superconductor with deep and shallow bands in the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the layers. In the shallow band, the quasiclassical approximation is not applicable, and Landau quantization has to be accounted for exactly. The electronic spectrum of this band in the magnetic field is composed of the one-dimensional Landau-level minibands. With increasing magnetic field the system experiences series of Lifshitz transitions when the chemical potential enters and exits the minibands. These transitions profoundly influenc…
The magnetic field-induced changes in the conductivity of metals are the subject of intense interest, both for revealing new phenomena and as a valuable tool for determining their Fermi surface. Here, we report a hitherto unobserved magnetoresistive effect in ultra-clean layered metals, namely a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance that is capable of overcoming their very pronounced orbital one. This effect is correlated with the inter-layer coupling disappearing for fields applied along the so-called Yamaji angles where the inter-layer coupling vanishes. Therefore, it is intrinsically asso…

We investigate the magnetic response in the quantized spin Hall (SH) phase of layered-honeycomb lattice system with intrinsic spin-orbit coupling lambda_SO and on-site Hubbard U. The response is characterized by a parameter g= 4 U a^2 d / 3, where a and d are the lattice constant and interlayer distance, respectively. When g< (sigma_{xy}^{s2} mu)^{-1}, where sigma_{xy}^{s} is the quantized spin Hall conductivity and mu is the magnetic permeability, the magnetic field inside the sample oscillates spatially. The oscillation vanishes in the non-interacting limit U -> 0. When g > (sigma_{xy}^{s2} …
Muon spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) is a vital technique for probing the superconducting gap structure, pairing symmetry and time reversal symmetry breaking, enabling an understanding of the mechanisms behind the unconventional superconductivity of cuprates and Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, which remain a puzzle. Very recently double layered Fe-based super-conductors having quasi-2D crystal structures and Cr-based superconductors with a quasi-1D structure have drawn considerable attention. Here we present a brief review of the characteristics of a few selected Fe- and Cr-based su…
