We revisit the blazar sequence exploiting the complete, flux limited sample of blazars with known redshift detected by the Fermi satellite after 4 years of operations (the 3LAC sample). We divide the sources into gamma-ray luminosity bins, collect all the archival data for all blazars, and construct their spectral energy distribution (SED). We describe the average SED of blazars in the same luminosity bin through a very simple, completely phenomenological function consisting of two broken power laws connecting with a power law of fixed slope describing the radio emission. We do that separately for BL Lacs and for flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and also for all blazars together. The main results are: i) FSRQs display approximately the same SED as the luminosity increases, except for the fact that the relative importance of the high energy peak increases; ii) as a consequence, X-ray spectra of FSRQs become harder for larger luminosities; iii) BL Lacs form indeed a sequence: they become redder (i.e. the peak frequencies becomes smaller) for increasing luminosities, with a steeper gamma-ray slope and a larger dominance of the high energy peak; iv) for all blazars (BL Lacs+FSRQs) these properties becomes more prominent, as the highest luminosity bin is populated mostly by FSRQs and the lowest luminosity bin mostly by BL Lacs. This agrees with the original blazar sequence, although BL Lacs never have an average gamma-ray slope as hard as found in the original sequence. v) At high luminosities, a large fraction of FSRQs shows signs of thermal emission from the accretion disc, contributing in the optical-UV.
We study the relationship between jet power and accretion for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars, respectively. We also compare the relevant parameter between them. Our main results are as follows. (i) Fermi and non-Fermi blazars have significant difference in redshift, black hole mass, and broad line luminosity. (ii) Fermi blazars have higher average core-dominance parameter than non-Fermi blazars, which suggests that Fermi blazars have strong beaming effect. (iii) We find significant correlation between broad line emission and jet power for Fermi and non-Fermi blazars, respectively, which suggests …
The Fermi/LAT telescope is an efficient blazar-detector in the MeV/GeV range. More than 1100 (900) blazars detected above 100 MeV (10 GeV) are clearly associated to BL Lacertae or Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar objects in the Fermi/LAT 3FGL catalogue. This number could significantly increase if multi-wavelength counterparts could be identified for the 573 3FGL blazars with unknown type, or even for the 1010 3FGL unassociated sources which are thought to be dominated by blazars, at least at high galactic latitude. Unfortunately, the size of the Fermi/LAT error box makes multi-wavelength follow-ups …
The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, as an all-sky survey and monitoring mission, is producing daily/weekly sampled gamma-ray light curves for dozens of blazars and other high-energy sources. Highlights on MeV-GeV gamma-ray variability properties of these sources are reported together with a few remarks about some multi-waveband observing campaigns led by Fermi and targeted to known or newly discovered gamma-ray blazars.
By statistically analyzing a large sample which includes blazars of Fermi detection (FBs) and non-Fermi detection (NFBs), we find that there are significant differences between FBs and NFBs for redshift, black hole mass, jet kinetic power from "cavity" power, broad-line luminosity, and ratio of core luminosity to absolute V-band magnitude ($R_{\rm v}$), but not for ratio of radio core to extended flux ($R_{\rm c}$) and Eddington ratio. Compared with NFBs, FBs have larger mean jet power, $R_{\rm c}$ and $R_{\rm v}$ while smaller mean redshift, black hole mass, broad-line luminosity. These resul…
Based on a large Fermi blazar sample, the blazar sequence (synchrotron peak frequency $ν_{\rm peak}$ versus synchrotron peak luminosity $L_{\rm peak}$) is revisited. It is found that there is significant anti-correlation between $ν_{\rm peak}$ and $L_{\rm peak}$ for blazars. However, after being Doppler corrected, the anti-correlation disappears. The jet cavity power ($P_{\rm jet}$) is estimated from extended radio luminosity. So it is free of beaming effect. We find that there are significant anti-correlations between $P_{\rm jet}$ and beam-corrected $ν_{\rm peak}^{'}$ for both blazars and ra…
We compile from literature the broadband SEDs of twelve TeV blazars observed simultaneously or quasi-simultaneously with Fermi/LAT and other instruments. Two SEDs are available for each of the objects and the state is identified as a low or high state according to its flux density at GeV/TeV band. The observed SEDs of BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) are fitted well with the synchrotron + synchrotron-self-Compton (syn+SSC) model, whereas the SEDs of the two flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) need to include the contributions of external Compton scattering. In this scenario, it is found that the Doppl…
The impact of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope on blazar research is reviewed. This includes a brief description of the Fermi Large Area Telescope, a summary of the various classes of extragalactic sources found in the First Large Area Telescope AGN Catalog, and more detailed discussion of the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C454.3 and the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304. Some theoretical studies related to ongoing blazar research with Fermi are mentioned, including implications of gamma-ray observations of radio galaxies on blazar unification scenarios, variability in colliding shells, and whether …
Blazar variability may be driven by stochastic processes. On the other hand, quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) behaviors are recently reported to be detected in $\it{Fermi}$-LAT data of blazars. However, the significances of these QPO signals given by traditional Fourier-like methods are still questioned. We analyze $γ$-ray light curves of the QPO blazars with two Gaussian process methods, CARMA and $\it{celerite}$, to examine the appropriateness of Gaussian processes for characterizing $γ$-ray light curves of blazars and the existence of the reported QPOs. We collect a sample of 27 blazars wit…
The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) is currently the most important facility for investigating the GeV $γ$-ray sky. With Fermi LAT more than three thousand $γ$-ray sources have been discovered so far. 1144 ($\sim40\%$) of the sources are active galaxies of the blazar class, and 573 ($\sim20\%$) are listed as Blazar Candidate of Uncertain type (BCU), or sources without a conclusive classification. We use the Empirical Cumulative Distribution Functions (ECDF) and the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for a fast method of screening and classification for BCUs based on data collected at $γ$-ray en…
Introduced in 1998 to attempt a first unified view of the broad-band emission properties of blazars, the blazar sequence has been extensively used in the past 25 years to guide observations as well as physical interpretation of the overall emission from these galaxies. In this review, we describe the evolution of the sequence along with the tremendous advances in the observational field, in particular in the gamma-ray band. A new version of the sequence built on TeV-detected objects is also presented. Two extreme classes of objects (MeV and hard-TeV blazars) are included in the discussion, giv…
Gamma-rays from cosmological sources contain information about gamma-ray interactions. Standard model and non-standard model photon interactions along the path between the source and the observer can lead to changes in the energy or state of the photons, which in turn alters the observed energy spectrum of the source. In general, these interactions are a function of photon energy as well as source distance. Here we show how existing high energy (50 GeV -- 10TeV) gamma-ray observations of blazars can be used to constrain the coupling of axion-like-particles (ALPs) to the photon. The same ALP-ph…
Blazar variability appears to be stochastic in nature. However, a possibility of low-dimensional chaos was considered in the past, but with no unambiguous detection so far. If present, it would constrain the emission mechanism by suggesting an underlying dynamical system. We rigorously searched for signatures of chaos in Fermi-Large Area Telescope light curves of 11 blazars. The data were comprehensively investigated using the methods of nonlinear time series analysis: phase-space reconstruction, fractal dimension, maximal Lyapunov exponent (mLE). We tested several possible parameters affectin…
The intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lac object 3C 66A was detected in a flaring state by the Fermi-LAT and VERITAS observatories in October 2008. These data and follow-up observations at other wavelengths create a rich sample of light curves and a constraining spectral energy distribution (SED). This is the first time that simultaneous observations at GeV and TeV energies were obtained for a flaring blazar. Results from these joint Fermi-LAT and VERITAS observations are presented in this conference proceeding.
We present multiwavelength spectral analyses of two Fermi-LAT blazars, OJ 287 and 3C 279, that are part of the Boston University multiwaveband polarization program. The data have been compiled from observations with Fermi, RXTE, the VLBA, and various ground-based optical and radio telescopes. We simulate the dynamic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) within the framework of a multi-slice, time-dependent leptonic jet model for blazars, with radiation feedback, in the internal shock scenario. We use the physical jet parameters obtained from the VLBA monitoring to guide our modeling efforts. We…
Recent detection of suborbital gamma-ray variability of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ) 3C 279 by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) is in severe conflict with established models of blazar emission. This paper presents the results of suborbital analysis of the Fermi/LAT data for the brightest gamma-ray flare of another FSRQ blazar 3C 454.3 in November 2010 (MJD 55516-22). Gamma-ray light curves are calculated for characteristic time bin lengths as short as 3 min. The measured variations of the 0.1-10 GeV photon flux are tested against the hypothesis of steady intraorbit flux. In addition, the …
The recent discovery of a diffuse neutrino flux up to PeV energies raises the question of which populations of astrophysical sources contribute to this diffuse signal. One extragalactic candidate source population to produce high-energy neutrinos are Blazars. We present results from a likelihood analysis searching for cumulative neutrino emission from Blazar populations selected with the 2nd Fermi-LAT AGN catalog (2LAC) using an IceCube data set that has been optimized for the detection of individual sources. In contrast to previous searches with IceCube, the investigated populations contain u…
Studying unidentified γ-ray sources is important as they may hide new discoveries. We conducted a multiwavelength analysis of 13 unidentified Fermi-LAT sources in the 3FGL catalog that have no known counterparts (Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources, UnIDs). The sample was selected for sources that have a single radio and X-ray candidate counterpart in their uncertainty ellipses. The purpose of this study is to find a possible blazar signature and to model the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the selected sources using an empirical log parabolic model. The results show that the synchrotron emis…
The Fermi gamma-ray space telescope has revolutionized our view of the gamma-ray sky and the high energy processes in the Universe. While the number of known gamma-ray emitters has increased by orders of magnitude since the launch of Fermi, there is an ever increasing number of, now more than a thousand, detected point sources whose low-energy counterpart is to this day unknown. To address this problem, we combined optical polarization measurements from the RoboPol survey as well as other discriminants of blazars from publicly available all-sky surveys in machine learning (random forest and lo…
The curvature of the $γ$-ray spectrum in blazars may reflect the intrinsic distribution of the emitting electron distribution, which will further give some information on the possible acceleration and cooling processes in the emitting region. The $γ$-ray spectra of Fermi blazars are normally fitted either by a single power-law (PL) or a log-normal (call Logarithmic Parabola, LP) form. The possible reason for this differnece is not unclear. We statistically explore this issue based on the different observational properties of 1419 Fermi blazars in the 3LAC Clean sample. We find that the $γ$-ray…
We discuss a new method for unveiling the possible blazar AGN nature among the numerous population of Unassociated Gamma-ray sources (UGS) in the Fermi catalogues. Our tool relies on positional correspondence of the Fermi object with X-ray sources (mostly from Swift-XRT), correlated with other radio, IR and optical data in the field. We built a set of Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) templates representative of the various blazar classes, and we quantitatively compared them to the observed multi-wavelength flux density data for all Swift-XRT sources found within the Fermi error-box, by taki…
The Fermi-LAT has detected more than 3000 sources in the GeV $γ$-ray regime. The majority are extra-galactic and these sources are dominated by blazars. However, $\sim28$ per cent of the sources in Fermi 3LAC are listed as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCU). Increasing the number of classified Fermi-LAT sources is important for improving our understanding of extra-galactic $γ$-ray sources and can be used to search for new very high energy sources. We report on the optical spectroscopy of seven selected unclassified BCU sources during 2014 and 2015 undertaken using the SAAO 1.9-m and Sou…
Beaming effect is important for the observational properties of blazars. In this work, we collect 91 $Fermi$ blazars with available radio Doppler factors. $γ$-ray Doppler factors are estimated and compared with radio Doppler factors for some sources. The intrinsic (de-beamed) $γ$-ray flux density ($f^{\rm in}_γ$), intrinsic $γ$-ray luminosity ($L^{\rm in}_γ$), and intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency ($ν_{\rm p}^{\rm in}$) are calculated. Then we study the correlations between $f^{\rm in}_γ$ and redshift and find that they follow the theoretical relation: $\log f = -2.0 \log z + {\rm const}$. …
The use of Bayesian neural networks is a novel approach for the classification of gamma-ray sources. We focus on the classification of Fermi-LAT blazar candidates, which can be divided into BL Lacertae objects and Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars. In contrast to conventional dense networks, Bayesian neural networks provide a reliable estimate of the uncertainty of the network predictions. We explore the correspondence between conventional and Bayesian neural networks and the effect of data augmentation. We find that Bayesian neural networks provide a robust classifier with reliable uncertainty esti…
A sample of 111 Fermi blazars each with a well-established radio core luminosity, broad-line luminosity, bolometric luminosity and black hole mass has been compiled from the literatures. We present a significant correlation between radio core and broad-line emission luminosities that supports a close link between accretion processes and relativistic jets. Analysis reveals a relationship of $\rm{LogL_{BLR}\sim(0.81\pm0.06)LogL_{R}^{C}}$ which is consistant with theoretical predicted coefficient and supports that blazar jets are powered by energy extraction from a rapidly spinning Kerr black hole…
Blazars are active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets pointed at the Earth, making them extremely bright at essentially all wavelengths, from radio to gamma rays. I review the modeling of this broadband spectral energy distributions of these objects, and what we have learned, with a focus on gamma rays.
Our goal is to research the upper limits on the extragalactic background light (EBL). The upper limits on the extragalactic background light (EBL), using the Fermi and very high energy (VHE) spectra recently observed in TeV blazars, are presented. We use an assumption that the VHE intrinsic photon index cannot be harder than the Fermi index measured by the Fermi-LAT. Totally, these upper limits on the EBL are compatible with ones given by most of EBL models. However, the models of high EBL density are denied by TeV blazars.
We study the gamma-ray variability of 13 blazars observed with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). These blazars have the most complete light curves collected during the first 4 years of the Fermi sky survey. We model them with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process or a mixture of the OU processes. The OU process has power spectral density (PSD) proportional to 1/f^alpha with alpha changing at a characteristic time scale, tau_0, from 0 (tau>>tau_0) to 2 (tau<<tau_0). The PSD of the mixed OU process has two characteristic time scales and an additional intermediate region with 0<alpha<2. We show…
High-$z$ blazars (z $\geq 2.5$) are the most powerful class of persistent $γ$-ray sources in the Universe. These objects possess the highest jet powers and luminosities and have black hole masses often in excess of $10^9$ solar masses. In addition, high-$z$ blazars are important cosmological probes and serve as test objects for blazar evolution models. Due to their large distance, their high-energy emission typically peaks below the GeV range, which makes them difficult to study with Fermi/LAT. Therefore, only the very brightest objects are detectable and, to date, only a small number of high-…
The high frequency component in blazars is thought to be due to inverse Compton scattered radiation. Recent observations by Fermi-LAT are used to evaluate the details of the scattering process. A comparison is made between the usually assumed single scattering scenario and one in which multiple scatterings are energetically important. In the latter case, most of the radiation is emitted in the Klein-Nishina limit. It is argued that several of the observed correlations defining the blazar sequence are most easily understood in a multiple scattering scenario. Observations indicate also that, in …
Blazars are the most active extragalactic gamma-ray sources. They show sporadic bursts of activity, lasting from hours to months. In this work we present a 10-year analysis of a sample of bright sources detected by Fermi-LAT (100 MeV - 300 GeV). Using 2-week binned lightcurves (LC) we estimated the Duty Cycle (DC): fraction of time that the source spends in an active state. The objects present different DC values, with an average of $22.74\%$ and $23.08 \%$ when considering (and not) the Extragalactic Background Light ( EBL). Additionally we study the so called "blazar sequence" trend for the …
Blazars are a sub-population of quasars whose jets are nearly aligned with the line-of-sight, which tend to exhibit multi-wavelength variability on a variety of timescales. Quasi-periodic variability on year-like timescales has been detected in a number of bright sources, and has been connected to the orbital motion of a putative massive black hole binary. If this were indeed the case, those blazar binaries would contribute to the nanohertz gravitational-wave stochastic background. We test the binary hypothesis for the blazar population observed by the \textit{Fermi} Gamma-Ray Space Telescope,…
Our goal is to limit the redshifts of three blazars PG 1553+113, 3C 66A and PKS 1424+240, through the investigation of their Fermi and VHE (very high energy) $γ$-ray observations. We assume that the intrinsic spectra of PG 1553+113, 3C 66A, and PKS 1424+240 have not any cutoff across the Fermi and VHE $γ$-ray energy ranges. The intrinsic spectra of VHE $γ$-rays are obtained through the extrapolation of Fermi spectra. Comparing the measured and intrinsic VHE spectra due to extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption, we give the redshift upper limits of three blazars assuming a specific EBL…
We report the detection of a transient $γ$-ray source in the direction of B3 1428+422 ($z=4.72$) by analyzing the 110-month {\it Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data. The new transient $γ-$ray source is far away from the Galactic plane and has a rather soft spectrum, in agreement with being a high redshift blazar. We suggest that the newly discovered transient is the $γ$-ray counterpart of B3 1428+422, which could be the {\it most distant} GeV source detected so far. The detection of a group of such distant $γ-$ray blazars will be helpful to reconstruct the evolution of the luminosity function and to study …
The Fermi-LAT has observed new gamma-ray flares from the blazar B0218+357 during July 2014. While no significant change in the gamma-ray spectrum has been previously observed through the flaring phase in late-2012, during this recent high activity the source displayed an exceptionally hard spectrum. The latter led to the detection of very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays from B0218+357 by the MAGIC telescopes, establishing this source as the most distant TeV emitter known to date. In addition to the detection of VHE emission, this blazar is of particular interest since it is known to …
We present a multiwavelength study of the unidentified Fermi gamma-ray source 0FGL J1830.3+0617, which exhibits variability above 200 MeV on timescales of days to weeks. Within the Fermi 95% confidence error contour lies B1827+0617, a radio source with spectral index alpha = 0.09 between 1.4 and 4.85 GHz. The flat spectral index and flux density of 443 mJy at 4.85 GHz are consistent with the bulk of Fermi sources associated with blazars. It is also detected in the 0.3-10 keV band by Swift. Optical imaging in 2009 May identifies B1827+0617 at R ~ 16.9, and shows that it is at least 2 magnitudes…
Despite the fact that blazars constitute the rarest class among active galactic nuclei (AGNs) they are the largest known population of associated $γ$-ray sources. Many of the $γ$-ray objects listed in the Fermi-Large Area Telescope Third Source catalog (3FGL) are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), either because they show multifrequency behaviour similar to blazars but lacking optical spectra in the literature, or because the quality of such spectra is too low to confirm their nature. Here we select, out of 585 BCUs in the 3FGL, 42 BCUs which we identify as probable blaz…
We examine the gamma-ray quasi-periodic variability of PKS 2155-304 with the latest publicly available \emph{Fermi}-LAT Pass 8 data which covers the years from 2008 August to 2016 October. We produce the light curves in two ways, i.e., the exposure-weighted aperture photometry and the maximum likelihood optimization. The light curves are then analyzed by using Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ); and the results reveal a significant quasi-periodicity with a period of $1.74\pm0.13$ years and a significance of $\sim$ 4.9 $σ$. The constraint of multifrequencies q…
We compute the contribution of blazars (Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars and BL-Lacs) to the Fermi-LAT Extragalactic gamma-ray Background, assuming a gamma-ray luminosity function proportional to the luminosity function of radio galaxies and the Spectral Energy Distribution of blazars given by the so-called blazar sequence. We find that blazars account for the 45% of the total Fermi-LAT EGB. However, at low (<10 GeV) and high (>50 GeV) energies the blazar contribution falls short to account for the observed background light. At E<10 GeV, the Extragalactic gamma-ray Background can be fully explained…
We present an analysis of the intrinsic (unattenuated by the extragalactic background light, EBL) power-law spectral indices of 128 extragalactic sources detected up to z~2 with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) at very high energies (VHEs, E>50 GeV). The median of the intrinsic index distribution is 2.20 (versus 2.54 for the observed distribution). We also analyze the observed spectral breaks (i.e., the difference between the VHE and high energy, HE, 100 MeV<E<300 GeV, spectral indices). The LAT has now provided a large sample of sources detected both at VHE and HE with comparable exposure…
We present a likelihood profile stacking technique based on the {\it Fermi}-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data to explore the $γ$-ray characteristics of {\it Fermi}-LAT undetected astrophysical populations. The pipeline is applied to a sample of $γ$-ray unresolved extreme blazars, i.e., sources with the highest synchrotron peak frequencies ($ν_{\rm Syn}^{\rm peak}\geqslant 10^{17}$ Hz), and we report a cumulative $γ$-ray detection with more than 32$σ$ confidence for 2 degrees of freedom. Comparing the generated stacked $γ$-ray spectrum with the sensitivity limits of the upcoming Cherenkov Telesco…
The external Compton (EC) model is used to study the high energy emission of some blazars, in which the external photon field is considered to dominate inverse Compton radiation. We explore the properties of external photon field through analyzing the FERMI LAT bright AGN sample within three months detection. In the sample, assuming the high energy radiation of low synchrotron peaked blazars from the EC process, we find that the external photon parameter Uext/\nuext may not be a constant. Calculating synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) luminosity from the quasi-simultaneous broadband spectrum…
The origin of gamma-ray flares observed from blazars is one of the major mysteries in jet physics. We have attempted to address this problem following a novel spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting technique that explored the flaring patterns identified in the broadband SEDs of two gamma-ray bright blazars 3C 279 (z=0.54) and 3C 454.3 (z=0.86), using near-simultaneous radio-to-gamma-ray observations. For both sources, the gamma-ray flux strongly correlates with the separation of the SED peaks and the Compton dominance. We propose that spectral hardening of the radiating electron population…
We study the relation between the mass accretion rate, the jet power, and the black hole mass of blazars. To this aim, we make use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the 11 months catalog of blazars detected at energies larger than 100 MeV by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi satellite. This allows to construct a relatively large sample of blazars with information about the luminosity (or upper limits) of their emission lines used as a proxy for the strength of the disc luminosity and on the luminosity of the high energy emission, used as a proxy for the jet power. We fi…
The high energy peaked BL Lac (HBL) object 1ES 0414+009 (z=0.287) is a distant very high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) blazars with well-determined redshift. This source was detected with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) between October 2005 and September 2009. It was also detected with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in 21 months of data. The combined high energy (HE) and VHE spectra, once corrected for gamma-gamma absorption on the extragalactic background light (EBL), indicate a Compton peak located above few TeV, among the highest in the BL Lac class.
The second-order Fermi acceleration (Fermi-II) driven by turbulence may be responsible for the electron acceleration in blazar jets. We test this model with time-dependent simulations. The hard electron spectrum predicted by the Fermi-II process agrees with the hard photon spectrum of 1ES 1101-232. For other blazars that show softer spectra, the Fermi-II model requires radial evolution of the electron injection rate and/or diffusion coefficient in the outflow. Such evolutions can yield a curved electron spectrum, which can reproduce the synchrotron spectrum of Mrk 421 from the radio to the X-r…
Blazar flares seen by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope Large Area Telescope (Fermi LAT) are often followed up by Target of Opportunity (ToO) requests to the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift). Using flares identified in the daily light curves of Fermi LAT Monitored Sources, we investigated which follow-up Swift ToO requests resulted in refereed publications. The goal was to create criteria of what Swift should look for in following up a Fermi-LAT gamma-ray flare. Parameters tested were peak gamma-ray flux, flare duration (based on a Bayesian Block analysis), type of AGN (BL Lac or FSRQ)…
Blazars are an extreme subclass of active galactic nuclei. Their rapid variability, luminous brightness, superluminal motion, and high and variable polarization are probably due to a beaming effect. However, this beaming factor (or Doppler factor) is very difficult to measure. Currently, a good way to estimate it is to use the time scale of their radio flares. In this $Letter$, we use multiwavelength data and Doppler factors reported in the literatures for a sample of 86 flaring blazars detected by Fermi to compute their intrinsic multiwavelength data and intrinsic spectral energy distribution…
The F-GAMMA program is among the most comprehensive programs that aim at understanding the physics in active galactic nuclei through the multi-frequency monitoring of Fermi blazars. Here we discuss monthly sampled broad-band radio spectra (2.6 - 142 GHz). Two different studies are presented. (a) We discuss that the variability patterns traced can be classified into two classes: (1) to those showing intense spectral-evolution and (2) those showing a self-similar quasi-achromatic behaviour. We show that a simple two-component model can very well reproduce the observed phenomenologies. (b) We pre…
I discuss the spectral energy distribution (SED) of all blazars with redshift detected by the {\it Fermi} satellite and listed in the 3LAC catalog. I will update the so called "blazar sequence" from the phenomenological point of view, with no theory or modelling. I will show that: i) pure data show that jet and accretion power are related; ii) the updated blazar sequence maintains the properties of the old version, albeit with a less pronounced dominance of the $γ$--ray emission; iii) at low bolometric luminosities, two different type of objects have the same high energy power: low black hole …
We report on our study of high-energy properties of two peculiar TeV emitters: the "extreme blazar" 1ES 0347-121 and the "extreme blazar candidate" HESS J1943+213 located near the Galactic Plane. Both objects are characterized by quiescent synchrotron emission with flat spectra extending up to the hard X-ray range, and both were reported to be missing GeV counterparts in the Fermi-LAT 2-year Source Catalog. We analyze a 4.5 year accumulation of the Fermi-LAT data, resulting in the detection of 1ES 0347-121 in the GeV band, as well as in improved upper limits for HESS J1943+213. We also present…
The Fermi-LAT revealed that the census of the gamma-ray sky is dominated by blazars. Looking for a possible connection between radio and gamma-ray emission is a central issue for understanding the blazar physics, and various works were dedicated to this topic. However, while a strong and significant correlation was found between radio and gamma-ray emission in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range, the connection between radio and very high energy (VHE, E>0.1 TeV) emission is still elusive. The main reason is the lack of a homogeneous VHE sky coverage, due to the operational mode of the imaging atmosph…
In the recently published 3FGL catalogue, the Fermi/LAT collaboration reports the detection of $γ$-ray emission from 3034 sources obtained after four years of observations. The nature of 1010 of those sources is unknown, whereas 2023 have well-identified counterparts in other wavelengths. Most of the associated sources are labelled as blazars (1717/2023), but the BL Lacs or FSRQ nature of 573 of these blazars is still undetermined. The aim of this study was two-fold. First, to significantly increase the number of blazar candidates from a search among the large number of Fermi/LAT 3FGL unassoci…
We use the complete MOJAVE 1.5 Jy sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) to examine the gamma-ray detection statistics of the brightest radio-loud blazars in the northern sky. We find that 23% of these AGN were not detected above 0.1 GeV by the Fermi LAT during the 4-year 3FGL catalog period partly because of an instrumental selection effect, and partly due to their lower Doppler boosting factors. Blazars with synchrotron peaks in their spectral energy distributions located below $10^{13.4}$ Hz also tend to have high-energy peaks that lie below the 0.1 GeV threshold of the LAT, and are thus le…
Using blazar light curves from the optical All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and the $γ$-ray \textit{Fermi}-LAT telescope, we performed the most extensive statistical correlation study between both bands, using a sample of 1,180 blazars. This is almost an order of magnitude larger than other recent studies. Blazars represent more than 98\% of the AGNs detected by \textit{Fermi}-LAT and are the brightest $γ$-ray sources in the extragalactic sky. They are essential for studying the physical properties of astrophysical jets from central black holes. However, their $γ$-ray flare me…
We study the $γ$-ray and broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) properties of a complete sample of 104 bright, radio-selected low-synchrotron peaked (LSP) blazars. Most of the sources have already been detected in the $γ$-ray band by Fermi-LAT, however almost 20% of these blazars have no counterpart in any of the Fermi catalogs so far. Using the Fermi Science Tools, we look for $γ$-ray emission for those objects not yet reported in any Fermi-LAT catalog. We performed a binned likelihood analysis in the 0.3-500 GeV energy band with Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data, integrating over 7.5 years of obse…
