The Fermi-LAT has detected more than 3000 sources in the GeV $γ$-ray regime. The majority are extra-galactic and these sources are dominated by blazars. However, $\sim28$ per cent of the sources in Fermi 3LAC are listed as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCU). Increasing the number of classified Fermi-LAT sources is important for improving our understanding of extra-galactic $γ$-ray sources and can be used to search for new very high energy sources. We report on the optical spectroscopy of seven selected unclassified BCU sources during 2014 and 2015 undertaken using the SAAO 1.9-m and Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Based on the identified spectral lines we have classified three of the sources as FSRQs and the remaining four as BL Lac objects, determining the redshift for four sources.
Blazars and in particular the subclass of high synchrotron peaked Active Galactic Nuclei are among the main targets for the present generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and will remain of great importance for very high-energy $γ$-ray science in the era of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Observations by IACTs, which have relatively small fields of view ($\sim$ few degrees), are limited by viewing conditions; therefore, it is important to select the most promising targets in order to increase the number of detections. The aim of this paper is to search for unclassi…
We collect data at all frequencies for the new sources classified as unknown active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the latest Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) all-sky hard X-ray catalog. Focusing on the 36 sources with measured redshift, we compute their spectral energy distribution (SED) from radio to $γ$-rays with the aim to classify these objects. We apply emission models that attempt to reproduce the obtained SEDs, including: i) a standard thin accretion disk together with an obscuring torus and a X-ray corona; ii) a two temperature thick advection-dominated flow; iii) an obscured AGN model, account…
We report the discovery of a $\sim$ $3.4\degr$-wide region of high-energy emission in data from the \emph{Fermi} LAT satellite. The centroid of the emission is located in the Southern Hemisphere sky, a few degrees away from the plane of the Galaxy at the Galactic coordinates l=350.6$\degr$, b=-4.7$\degr$. It shows a hard spectrum that is compatible with a simple power-law, $\frac{dN}{dE}\propto E^{-Γ}$, in the energy range 0.7--500 GeV, with a spectral index $Γ= 1.68 \pm 0.04_{\mbox{stat}} \pm 0.1_{\mbox{sys}}$. The integrated source photon flux above 0.7 GeV is $(4.71 \pm 0.49_{\mbox{stat}}\p…
We present the results of the $γ$-ray flux distribution study on the brightest blazars which are observed by the \emph{Fermi}-LAT. We selected 50 brightest blazars based on the maximum number of detection reported in the LAT third AGN catalog. We performed standard unbinned maximum likelihood analysis on the LAT data during the period between August 2008 and December 2016, in order to obtain the average monthly flux. After quality cuts, blazars for which at least 90\% of the total flux was survived were selected for the further study, and this includes 19 FSRQs and 19 BL Lacs. The Anderson-Dar…
Located at the South Pole, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory is the world largest neutrino telescope, instrumenting one cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice at a depth between 1450m to 2450m. In 2013 IceCube reported the first observations of a diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino flux. Although the IceCube Collaboration has identified more than 100 high-energy neutrino events, the origin of this neutrino flux is still not known. Blazars, a subclass of Active Galactic Nuclei and one of the most powerful classes of objects in the Universe, have long been considered promising sources of high en…
High-redshift blazars are valuable tools to study the early Universe. So far only a handful of $γ$-ray blazars have been found at redshifts above 3. $γ$-ray signals are detected in the direction of PMN J2219-2719 ($z=3.63$) and PMN J2321-0827 ($z=3.16$) by analyzing the 10-year $Fermi$-LAT Pass 8 data. PMN J2219-2719 is not distinguished from the background in the global analysis. During the 5-month epoch, the TS value is 47.8 and the flux is more than 10 times of the 10-year averaged flux. In addition, the angular distance between the $γ$-ray position and the radio position of PMN J2219-2719 …
Machine learning is an automatic technique that is revolutionizing scientific research, with innovative applications and wide use in astrophysics. The aim of this study was to developed an optimized version of an Artificial Neural Network machine learning method for classifying blazar candidates of uncertain type detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray instrument. The initial study used information from gamma-ray light curves present in the LAT 4-year Source Catalog. In this study we used additionally gamma-ray spectra and multiwavelength data, and certain statistical method…
We recently started a systematic search of low-energy counterparts of the unidentified gamma-ray sources (UGSs) listed in the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) First Source Catalog (1FGL) and the Fermi-LAT 2-Year Source Catalog (2FGL).} The main goal of our investigation is to find active galaxies belonging to the blazar class that lie within the positional uncertainty region of the UGSs and thus could be their potential low-energy counterparts. To achieve our aims, we first adopted several procedures based on the peculiar observational properties of blazars in the radio and in the IR. Then we …
Through an optical campaign performed at 4 telescopes located in the northern and the southern hemispheres, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for 75 counterparts of unclassified or poorly studied hard X-ray emitting objects detected with Swift/BAT and listed in the 54 month Palermo BAT catalogue. All these objects have also observations taken with Swift/XRT, ROSAT or Chandra satellites which allowed us to reduce the high energy error box and pinpoint the most likely optical counterpart/s. We find that 69 sources in our sample are Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs); of them, 35 are classified as…
The Large Array Telescope for Tracking Energetic Sources (LATTES), is a novel concept for an array of hybrid EAS array detectors, composed of a Resistive Plate Counter array coupled to a Water Cherenkov Detector, planned to cover gamma rays from less than 100 GeV up to 100 TeVs. This experiment, to be installed at high altitude in South America, could cover the existing gap in sensitivity between satellite and ground arrays. The low energy threshold, large duty cycle and wide field of view of LATTES makes it a powerful tool to detect transient phenomena and perform long term observations of va…

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) is currently the most important facility for investigating the GeV $γ$-ray sky. With Fermi LAT more than three thousand $γ$-ray sources have been discovered so far. 1144 ($\sim40\%$) of the sources are active galaxies of the blazar class, and 573 ($\sim20\%$) are listed as Blazar Candidate of Uncertain type (BCU), or sources without a conclusive classification. We use the Empirical Cumulative Distribution Functions (ECDF) and the Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for a fast method of screening and classification for BCUs based on data collected at $γ$-ray en…
The Southern Hemisphere VLBI monitoring program TANAMI provides dual-frequency (8 GHz and 22 GHz), milliarcsecond monitoring of extragalactic jets south of -30 degrees declination. The TANAMI sample consists of a combined radio and gamma-ray selected subsample of currently 80 AGN jets, with new gamma-ray bright sources being added upon detections by Fermi/LAT. Supporting programs provide simultaneous multiwavelength coverage of all sources, in order to construct broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of flaring and quiescence source states, as well as a rapid follow-up of high-energy f…
Context. While searching the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) for diffuse radio emission, we have serendipitously discovered extended radio emission close to the Galactic plane. The radio morphology suggests the presence of a previously unknown Galactic supernova remnant. An unclassified γ-ray source detected by EGRET (3EG J1744-3934) is present in the same location and may stem from the interaction between high-speed particles escaping the remnant and the surrounding interstellar medium. Aims. Our aim is to confirm the presence of a previously unknown supernova remnant and to determine a possible a…
Magnetic fields in the ionized medium of the disk and halo of the Milky Way impose Faraday rotation on linearly polarized radio emission. We compare two surveys mapping the Galactic Faraday rotation, one showing the rotation measures of extragalactic sources seen through the Galaxy (from Hutschenreuter et al 2022), and one showing the Faraday depth of the diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission from the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey. Comparing the two data sets in 5deg x 10deg bins shows good agreement at intermediate latitudes, 10 < |b| < 50 deg, and little correlation between them at lowe…
The Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) monitoring program TANAMI provides bi-monthly, dualfrequency (8GHz and 22GHz) observations of extragalactic jets with milliarcsecond resolution south of -30 deg declination using the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA) and additional radio telescopes in Antarctica, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa. Supporting programs provide multiwavelength coverage of the Fermi/LAT sources of the TANAMI sample, in order to construct simultaneous broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs), as well as rapid follow-ups of high energy flares. The main purpose …
The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has detected more than 5000 gamma-ray sources in its first 8 years of operation. More than 3000 of them are blazars. About 60 per cent of the Fermi-LAT blazars are classified as BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) or Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs), while the rest remain of uncertain type. The goal of this study was to classify those blazars of uncertain type, using a supervised machine learning method based on an artificial neural network, by comparing their properties to those of known gamma-ray sources. Probabilities for each of 1329 uncertain blazars to b…
The International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) continues to successfully work in orbit after its launch in 2002. The mission provides the deepest ever survey of hard X-ray sources throughout the Galaxy at energies above 20 keV. We report on a catalogue of new hard X-ray source candidates based on the latest sky maps comprising 14 years of data acquired with the IBIS telescope onboard INTEGRAL in the Galactic Plane (|b|<17.5 deg). The current catalogue includes in total 72 hard X-ray sources detected at S/N>4.7 sigma and not known to previous INTEGRAL surveys. Among them, 31 obj…
We present the first southern-hemisphere all-sky imager and radio-transient monitoring system implemented on two prototype stations of the low-frequency component of the Square Kilometre Array. Since its deployment the system has been used for real-time monitoring of the recorded commissioning data. Additionally, a transient searching algorithm has been executed on the resulting all-sky images. It uses a difference imaging technique, and has enabled identification of a wide variety of transient classes, ranging from human-made radio-frequency interference to genuine astrophysical events. Obser…
Through an optical campaign performed at 4 telescopes located in the northern and the southern hemispheres, plus archival data from two on-line sky surveys, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for 29 counterparts of unclassified or poorly studied hard X-ray emitting objects detected with Swift/BAT and listed in the 39 months Palermo catalogue. All these objects have also observations taken with Swift/XRT or XMM-EPIC which not only allow us to pinpoint their optical counterpart, but also to study their X-ray spectral properties (column density, power law photon index and F2-10 keV flux). We f…
We present the results of the optical spectroscopy follow-up of a sample of 28 unclassified blazars from the Third Fermi-LAT Catalog of High-Energy Sources (3FHL). All the spectra were taken with the 4m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak. With this follow-up program we are able to classify 27 out of 28 objects as BL Lacs, while the remaining one is a flat spectrum radio quasar. We determine a redshift (z) for three of these objects and a lower limit on z for other four sources: the farthest object for which we obtain a redshift has z>0.836. These results are part of a more extended campaign of opti…
Non-vanishing parity-odd correlators of gamma ray arrival directions observed by Fermi-LAT indicate the existence of a helical intergalactic magnetic field (Tashiro et al.2013). We successfully test this hypothesis using more stringent cuts of the data, Monte Carlo simulations with Fermi-LAT time exposure information, separate analyses for the northern and southern galactic hemispheres, and confirm predictions made in Tashiro & Vachaspati (2014). With some further technical assumptions, we show how to reconstruct the magnetic helicity spectrum from the parity-odd correlators.
The Galactic center excess (GCE) remains one of the most intriguing discoveries from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) observations. We revisit the characteristics of the GCE by first producing a new set of high-resolution galactic diffuse gamma-ray emission templates, which are ultimately due to cosmic-ray interactions with the interstellar medium. Using multi-messenger observations we constrain the properties of the galactic diffuse emission. The broad properties of the GCE that we find in this work are qualitatively unchanged despite the introduction of this new set of templates, though …
