We show that the semiclassical entropy of $D$-dimensional rotating (an)isotropic black holes with planar horizon can be successfully computed according to a Cardy-like formula. This formula does not refer to any central charges but instead involves the vacuum energy which is identified with a gravitational bulk soliton. The soliton is obtained from the non-rotating black hole solution by means of a double analytic continuation. The robustness of the Cardy-like formula is tested with numerous and varied examples, including AdS, Lifshitz and hyperscaling violation planar black holes.
In this paper we show that the entropy of black hole horizon in charged rotating BTZ space-time can be described by the Cardy-Verlinde formula, which is supposed to be an entropy formula of conformal field theory in any dimension.
We study the AdS rotating black hole solution for the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity in three dimensions. The field equations of the asymptotically AdS black hole of the static metric can be expressed as the first law of thermodynamics, i.e. $dE=TdS-PdV$. The corrected Hawking-like temperature and entropy of asymptotically AdS rotating black hole are calculated using the Cardy formula and the tunneling method. Comparison of these methods will help identify the unknown leading correction parameter $β_1$ in the tunneling method.
We derive the general anomaly polynomial for a class of two-dimensional CFTs arising as twisted compactifications of a higher-dimensional theory on compact manifolds $\mathcal{M}_d$, including the contribution of the isometries of $\mathcal{M}_d$. We then use the result to perform a counting of microstates for electrically charged and rotating supersymmetric black strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$ and AdS$_7\times S^4$ with horizon topology BTZ$ \ltimes S^2$ and BTZ$ \ltimes S^2 \times Σ_\mathfrak{g}$, respectively, where $Σ_\mathfrak{g}$ is a Riemann surface. We explicitly construct the latter cla…
The free energies of the conformal field theories dual to charged adS and rotating adS black holes show Hawking-Page phase transition. We study the transition by constructing boundary free energies in terms of order parameters. This is done by employing Landau's phenomenological theory of first order phase transition. The Cardy-Verlinde formula is then showed to follow quite naturally. We further make some general observations on the Cardy-Verlinde formula and the first order phase transition.
The Cardy-Verlinde formula is generalized to the asymptotically flat rotating charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell theory and low-energy effective field theory describing string by using some typical spacetimes, such as the Kerr-Newman, Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion, Kaluza-Klein, and Sen black holes. For the Kerr-Newman black hole, the definition of the Casimir energy takes the same form as that of the Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ and Kerr-Newman-dS$_4$ black holes, while the Cardy-Verlinde formula possesses different from since the Casimir energy does not appear in the extensive energy. The E…
In this paper we calculate leading order correction due to small statistical fluctuations around equilibrium, to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for the Achucarro-Oritz black hole, which is the most general two-dimensional black hole derived from the three-dimensional rotating Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. Then we obtain the same correction to the Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula (which is supposed to be an entropy formula of conformal field theory in any dimension).
We study supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric extremal black holes obtained in Type IIA string theory compactified on K3 X T^2, with duality group O(6,22,Z) X SL(2,Z). In the Cardy limit an internal circle combines with the AdS_2 component in the near horizon geometry to give a BTZ black hole whose entropy is given by the Cardy formula. We study black holes carrying D0-D4 and D0-D6 brane charges. We find, both in the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric cases, that a generic set of charges cannot be brought to the Cardy limit using the duality symmetries. In the non-supersymmetric case, unli…
We apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence to the rotating black p-brane solutions. These solutions give the simplest examples from string theory point of view. Their near horizon geometries have structures of AdS, even though black p-brane solutions do not have AdS-like structures in the non-rotating case. The microscopic entropy which can be calculated via the Cardy formula exactly agrees with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We consider the superconformal index of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories computed via localization on $S^1\times S^2$. We systematically develop an expansion where the ratio of the radius of $S^1$ to the radius of $S^2$ is taken very small -- a Cardy-like expansion. We emphasize the sub-leading structures in this Cardy-like expansion as well as their interplay with the large-$N$ limit for theories with gauge group of the form product of $U(N)$ factors. We demonstrate that taking the large-$N$ limit first leads to an expression for the index that only includes terms …
In this paper it is shown that the entropy of the black hole horizon in the Achucarro-Ortiz spacetime, which is the most general two-dimensional black hole derived from the three-dimensional rotating BTZ black hole, can be described by the Cardy-Verlinde formula. The latter is supposed to be an entropy formula of conformal field theory in any dimension.
In the present paper we show that for a low frequency limit the wave equation of massless scalar field in the background of non-extremal charged rotating black holes in five-dimensional minimal gauged and ungauged supergravity can be written as the Casimir of an $SL(2,R)$ symmetry, our result show that the entropy of the black hole is reproduced by the Cardy formula, also the absorption cross section is in consistence with the finite temperature absorption cross section for a 2D CFT.
Recent work has shown that the entropy of the non-rotating BTZ black hole can be derived from a dual conformal description at any spatial location. In this followup it is shown that a dual conformal description exists at any spatial location for the rotating BTZ black hole as well. As in the non-rotating case, two copies of the central charge $c^{\pm} = 3\ell/2G$ are recovered and the microcanonical Cardy formula yields the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
Kerr/CFT correspondence exhibits many remarkable connections between the near horizon Kerr black hole and a CFT. Recently, a hidden conformal symmetry in the solution space of Kerr black hole is shown by Castro, Maloney and Strominger. Applying the formula on a rotating black hole with four independent U(1) charges derived in string theory which is known as the 4D Cvetic-Youm solution, we show that the same hidden conformal symmetry is also held. The temperatures we derived match the Cardy formula correctly and we give a clarification about old explains on them. The calculation on entropy and …
We provide a general formula for the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories living on the world-volume of D3-branes at conical Calabi-Yau singularities in the Cardy limit. The index is defined as the partition function on $T^2 \times S^2_ω$, with a partial topological twist and a $Ω$-deformation along $S^2$, in the presence of background magnetic fluxes and fugacities for the global symmetries and can be used to study the properties of a class of BPS black strings. To this purpose, we find rotating domain-wall solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity int…
We investigate the Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole solution obtained from Plebański-Demiański solutions with several assumptions. The origin of the microscopic entropy of this black hole is investigated using the conjectured Kerr/CFT correspondence which is originally proposed for extremal Kerr black holes. The isometry of the near-horizon extremal Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole shows that the asymptotic symmetry group may be implemented to compute the central charge of the Virasoro algebra. Furthermore, by assuming Frolov-Thorne vacuum, the conformal temperatures can be obtained. Then by using the Car…
We study supersymmetric index of 4d $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $S^1 \times M_3$. We compute asymptotic behavior of the index in the limit of shrinking $S^1$ for arbitrary $N$ by a refinement of supersymmetric Cardy formula. The asymptotic behavior for the superconformal index case ($M_3 =S^3$) at large $N$ agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of rotating electrically charged BPS black hole in $AdS_5$ via a Legendre transformation as recently shown in literature. We also find that the agreement formally persists for finite $N$ if we slightly modify the AdS/CFT dict…
We show that one may pass from bulk to boundary thermodynamic quantities for rotating AdS black holes in arbitrary dimensions so that if the bulk quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamics then so do the boundary CFT quantities. This corrects recent claims that boundary CFT quantities satisfying the first law may only be obtained using bulk quantities measured with respect to a certain frame rotating at infinity, and which therefore do not satisfy the first law. We show that the bulk black hole thermodynamic variables, or equivalently therefore the boundary CFT variables, do not always…
Recent derivations of Cardy-like formulae in higher dimensional field theories have opened up a way of computing, via AdS/CFT, universal contributions to black hole entropy from gravitational Chern-Simons terms. Based on the manifestly covariant formulation of the differential Noether charge for Chern-Simons terms proposed in arXiv:1407.6364, we compute the entropy and asymptotic charges for the rotating charged AdS black holes in higher dimensions at leading order of the fluid/gravity derivative expansion in the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons system. This gives a result that exactly matches th…
Motivated by the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence, we investigate the holographic dual of the extremal and non-extremal rotating linear dilaton black hole in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion Gravity. For the case of extremal black hole, by imposing the appropriate boundary condition at spatial infinity of the near horizon extremal geometry, the Virasoro algebra of conserved charges associated with the asymptotic symmetry group is obtained. It is shown that the microscopic entropy of the dual conformal field given by Cardy formula exactly agrees with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extrema…
We present a spinning hairy black hole in gravity minimally coupled to a self-interacting real scalar field in three spacetime dimensions. The black hole is characterized by having a single horizon which encloses a curvature singularity and the scalar field is regular everywhere. The mass and angular momentum are shown to be finite. The presence of a scalar field with a slower fall-off at infinity leads an anti-de Sitter asymptotic behavior which differs from the one found by Brown and Henneaux, but has the same symmetry group as in pure gravity. A scalar soliton, which is a finite mass regula…
A recently proposed holographic duality allows the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal rotating black holes to be calculated microscopically, by applying the Cardy formula to the two-dimensional chiral CFTs associated with certain reparameterisations of azimuthal angular coordinates in the solutions. The central charges are proportional to the angular momenta of the black hole, and so the method degenerates in the case of static (non-rotating) black holes. We show that the method can be extended to encompass such charged static extremal AdS black holes by using consistent Kaluza-Klein spher…
We extend the investigation of the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence to large classes of rotating black hole solutions in gauged and ungauged supergravities. The correspondence, proposed originally for four-dimensional Kerr black holes, asserts that the quantum states in the near-horizon region of an extremal rotating black hole are holographically dual to a two-dimensional chiral theory whose Virasoro algebra arises as an asymptotic symmetry of the near-horizon geometry. In fact in dimension D there are [(D-1)/2] commuting Virasoro algebras. We consider a general canonical class of ne…
We investigate the holographic Smarr relation beyond the large N limit. By making use of the holographic dictionary, we find that the bulk correlates of sub-leading 1/N corrections to this relation are related to the couplings in Lovelock gravity theories. We likewise obtain a holographic equation of state, and check its validity for a variety of interesting and non-trivial black holes, including rotating planar black holes in Gauss-Bonnet-Born-Infeld gravity, and non-extremal rotating black holes in minimal 5d gauged supergravity. We provide an explanation of the N-dependence of the holograph…
We study the asymptotically flat rotating hairy black hole solution of a three-dimensional gravity theory which is given by taking the flat-space limit (zero cosmological constant limit) of new massive gravity. We propose that the dual field theory of the flat-space limit of new massive gravity can be described by a contracted conformal field theory which is invariant under the action of the BMS$_{3}$ group. Using the flat/contracted conformal field theory correspondence, we construct a stress tensor which yields the conserved charges of the asymptotically flat black hole solution. We check th…
We investigate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric, rotating, asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and black strings. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the entropy of these black objects is determined, on the field theory side, by the superconformal index and the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, respectively. We read off the logarithmic correction from those field-theoretic partition functions. On the gravity side, we take the near-horizon limit and apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence whose associated ch…
The nonextremal Kerr black holes have been considered to be holographically dual to two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theories (CFTs). In this paper, we extend the holography to the case of an asymptotically anti--de Sitter (AdS) rotating charged black holes in $f$($T$) gravity, where $f(T) = T + αT^2$, where $α$ is a constant. We find that the scalar wave radial equation at the near-horizon region implies the existence of the 2D conformal symmetries. We note that the $2π$ identification of the azimuthal angle $ϕ$ in the black hole line element, corresponds to a spontaneous breaking of the …
We present a class of solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations in d-dimensions, all of which are asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter space-times. They describe electrically charged rotating solutions, which are generalizations of those found by Lemos (gr-qc/9404041). These solutions have toroidal, planar or cylindrical horizons and can be interpreted as black holes, or black strings/branes. We calculate the inverse temperature and entropy, and then we use the Brown-York stress-tensor to calculate mass and angular momenta of these solutions.
We evaluate the large-$N$ behavior of the superconformal indices of toric quiver gauge theories, and use it to find the entropy functions of the dual electrically charged rotating $\mathrm{AdS}_5$ black holes. To this end, we employ the recently proposed Bethe Ansatz method, and find a certain set of solutions to the Bethe Ansatz Equations of toric theories. This, in turn, allows us to compute the large-$N$ behavior of the index for these theories, including the infinite families $Y^{pq}$, $X^{pq}$ and $L^{pqr}$ of quiver gauge theories. Our results are in perfect agreement with the prediction…
We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating extremal black holes using quantum entropy function i.e. Euclidean quantum gravity approach. Our analysis includes five dimensional supersymmetric BMPV black holes in type IIB string theory on T^5 and K3 x S^1 as well as in the five dimensional CHL models, and also non-supersymmetric extremal Kerr black hole and slowly rotating extremal Kerr-Newmann black holes in four dimensions. For BMPV black holes our results are in perfect agreement with the microscopic results derived from string theory. In particular we reproduce correctly th…
At zero temperature the Coulomb Branch of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory is described in supergravity by multi-center solutions with D3-brane charge. At finite temperature and chemical potential the vacuum degeneracy is lifted, and minima of the free energy are shown to have a supergravity description as rotating black D3-branes. In the extreme limit these solutions single out preferred points on the moduli space that can be interpreted as simple distributions of branes --- for instance, a uniformly charged planar disc. We exploit this geometrical representation to study the thermodynami…
Previous derivations of the BTZ black hole entropy from a dual conformal description place the degrees of freedom at spatial infinity. Here it is shown for the non-rotating case that a dual conformal description exists at any location around the black hole, a result that has a strong physical appeal considering that in 2+1 dimensions there are no propagating degrees of freedom in the classical theory. Two copies of the central charge of $3\ell/2G$ are recovered, and the microcanonical Cardy formula yields the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We extend a recently derived higher-dimensional Cardy formula to include angular momenta, which we use to obtain the Bekensten-Hawking entropy of AdS black branes, compactified rotating branes, and large Schwarzschild/Kerr black holes. This is the natural generalization of Strominger's microscopic derivation of the BTZ black hole entropy to higher dimensions. We propose an extension to include $U(1)$ charge, which agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large Reissner-Nordstrom/Kerr-Newman black holes at high temperature. We extend the results to arbitrary hyperscaling violation exponent…
We apply Brown-Henneaux's method to the 5D extremal rotating Kaluza-Klein black holes essentially following the calculation of the Kerr/CFT correspondence, which is not based on supersymmetry nor string theory. We find that there are two completely different Virasoro algebras that can be obtained as the asymptotic symmetry algebras according to appropriate boundary conditions. The microscopic entropies are calculated by using the Cardy formula for both boundary conditions and they perfectly agree with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The rotating Kaluza-Klein black holes contain a 4D dyonic Rei…
Asymptotically AdS rotating black holes for the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity theory in three dimensions are considered. In the special case when the theory admits a unique maximally symmetric solution, apart from the mass and the angular momentum, the black hole is described by an independent "gravitational hair" parameter, which provides a negative lower bound for the mass. This bound is saturated at the extremal case and, since the temperature and the semiclassical entropy vanish, it is naturally regarded as the ground state. The absence of a global charge associated with t…
In this paper we consider the dynamics of a massive spinor field in the background of the acoustic black hole spacetime. Although this effective metric is acoustic and describes the propagation of sound waves, it can be considered as a toy model for the gravitational black hole. In this manner, we study the properties of the dynamics of the fermion field in this "gravitational" rotating black hole as well as the vortex background. We compute the differential cross section through the use of the partial wave approach and show that an effect similar to the gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect occu…
Motivated by advanced progress in the holographic theory between rotating black holes and CFT, we explore the conformal invariance on dyonic Kerr-Sen black hole and its gauged family. We consider a neutral massless scalar probe on the black holes' background within the low-frequency limit and exhibit that the solution space possesses $SL(2,R)\times SL(2,R)$ isometry. The periodic identification of the azimuthal angle corresponds to the spontaneous conformal symmetry breaking by temperatures $T_L,T_R$. Using the computation of the central charges on Ref. [25] that we recalculate by considering …
Quantum gravitational effects on the near horizon may alter the black hole's horizon drastically to be partially reflective, portrayed by a quantum membrane. With this modification, the object can be considered as an exotic compact object (ECO). Quantum effects on the strong gravitational regime may also lead to a non-conserved matter tensor that can be described phenomenologically using Rastall gravity. In this work, we study the properties of black holes and ECOs within Rastall gravity using Kerr/CFT correspondence. We systematically investigate the properties of the most general rotating bl…
The near horizon geometry of the rotating C-metric, describing accelerating Kerr-Newman black holes, is analysed. It is shown that, at extremality, even though not it is isomorphic to the extremal Kerr-Newman, it remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2 \times S^2$. Therefore the methods of the Kerr/CFT correspondence can successfully be applied to build a CFT dual model, whose entropy reproduce, through the Cardy formula, the Beckenstein-Hawking entropy of the accelerating black hole. The mass of accelerating Kerr-Newman black hole, which fulfil the first law of thermodynamics, is prese…
Recently Gibbons {\it et al.} in hep-th/0408217 defined a set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes with the maximal number of rotation parameters in arbitrary dimension. This set of conserved quantities is defined with respect to a frame which is non-rotating at infinity. On the other hand, there is another set of conserved quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes, defined by Hawking {\it et al.} in hep-th/9811056, which is measured relative to a frame rotating at infinity. Gibbons {\it et al.} explicitly showed that the quantities defined by them satisfy the first law of black hole the…
We show that, independently of the scalar field potential and of specific asymptotic properties of the spacetime (asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter), any static, spherically symmetric or planar, black hole or soliton solution of the Einstein theory minimally coupled to a real scalar field with a general potential is mode stable under linear odd-parity perturbations. To this end, we generalize the Regge-Wheeler equation for a generic self-interacting scalar field, and show that the potential of the relevant Schrödinger operator can be mapped, by the so-called S-deformation, to a …
Given a boundary of spacetime preserved by a Diff(S^{1}) sub-algebra, we propose a systematic method to compute the zero mode and the central extension of the associated Virasoro algebra of charges. Using these values in the Cardy formula, we may derive an associated statistical entropy to be compared with the Bekenstein-Hawking result. To illustrate our method, we study in detail the BTZ and the rotating Kerr-adS_{4} black holes (at spatial infinity and on the horizon). In both cases, we are able to reproduce the area law with the correct factor of 1/4 for the entropy. We also recover within …
We consider the idea of modeling a rotating acoustic black hole by an idealized draining bathtub vortex which is a planar circulating flow phenomenon with a sink at the origin. We find the acoustic metric for this phenomenon from a noncommutative Abelian Higgs model. As such the acoustic metric not only describes a rotating acoustic black hole but also inherits the noncommutative characteristic of the spacetime. We address the issues of superresonance and analogue Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect in this background. We mainly show that the scattering of planar waves by a draining bathtub vortex leads…
The technique of dimensional reduction was used in a recent paper (Zanchin et al, Phys. Rev. D66, 064022,(2002)) where a three-dimensional (3D) Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory was built from the usual four-dimensional (4D) Einstein-Maxwell-Hilbert action for general relativity. Starting from a class of 4D toroidal black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes several 3D black holes were obtained and studied in such a context. In the present work we choose a particular case of the 3D action which presents Maxwell field, dilaton field and an extra scalar field, besides gravity fi…
In this paper we explore the effect of the generalized uncertainty principle and modified dispersion relation to compute Hawking radiation from a rotating acoustic black hole in the tunneling formalism by using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation applied to the Hamilton-Jacobi method. The starting point is to consider the planar acoustic black hole metric found in a Lorentz-violating Abelian Higgs model. In our analyzes we investigate quantum corrections for the Hawking temperature and entropy. A logarithmic correction and an extra term that depends on a conserved charge were obt…
Motivated by the success of the recently proposed method of anomaly cancellation to derive Hawking fluxes from black hole horizons of spacetimes in various dimensions, we have further extended the covariant anomaly cancellation method shortly simplified by Banerjee and Kulkarni to explore the Hawking radiation of the (3+1)-dimensional charged rotating black strings and their higher dimensional extensions in anti-de Sitter spacetimes, whose horizons are not spherical but can be toroidal, cylindrical or planar, according to their global identifications. It should be emphasized that our analysis …
We present a numerical study of fully non-linear, rotating and charged hairy black hole solutions in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space, which originate from a consistent truncation of $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity, and can be consistently embedded in type IIB supergravity with AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ asymptotics. The hairy black holes have one scalar field charged under a $U(1)$ gauge field, and branch from the near-extremal Cvetič, Lü and Pope solutions. We give numerical evidence that the hairy solutions exist arbitrarily close to the BPS bound for all charges, and saturate it in the $T\righta…
A certain identification of points in a planar Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter (AdS) black hole generates a four-dimensional static black string. In turn, a rotating black string can be obtained from a static one by means of an `illegitimate coordinate transformation', a local boost in the compact direction. On the basis of the gauge/gravity duality, these black strings are dual to rotating thermal states of a strongly interacting conformal field theory (CFT) that lives on a cylinder. In this work, we obtain the complete quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of the gravitational perturbations of rotati…
Rotating black hole solution surrounded by quintessential matter is recently discussed because it might be the promising solution to study the effect of dark energy in small scale of the universe. This quintessential solution is originally derived from the condition of additivity and linearity for the energy-momentum tensor. We carry out the thermodynamic properties of this solution using the Kerr/CFT correspondence for several specific quintessential equation of state parameters. A problem arises when we compute the central charge because the canonical conserved charge is needed to be calcula…
