A low cost solution for constructing receiver signal points is investigated that combines a large number of constrained radio frequency (RF) frontends with a limited number of full RF chains. The constrained RF front ends have low cost and are limited to on/off switching of antenna elements and a small number of phases. Severe degradations are typically observed for multi-user MIMO for these simple on/off antenna arrays. A few full RF frontends are shown to compensate for the signal errors of the high number of constrained RF frontends for various scenarios. An algorithm for such a hybrid RF (HRF) system is developed that achieves performance close to that of exhaustive search with respect to the mean square error of the constructed receiver signals for Rayleigh fading and the WINNER 2 Urban Macro channel model.
In this contribution, the evaluation of the diversity of the MIMO MMSE receiver is addressed for finite rates in both flat fading channels and frequency selective fading channels with cyclic prefix. It has been observed recently that in contrast with the other MIMO receivers, the MMSE receiver has a diversity depending on the aimed finite rate, and that for sufficiently low rates the MMSE receiver reaches the full diversity - that is, the diversity of the ML receiver. This behavior has so far only been partially explained. The purpose of this paper is to provide complete proofs for flat fading…
In most MIMO systems, the family of waterfall error curves, calculated at different spectral efficiencies, are asymptotically parallel at high SNR. In other words, most MIMO systems exhibit a single diversity value for all fixed rates. The MIMO MMSE receiver does not follow this pattern and exhibits a varying diversity in its family of error curves. This work analyzes this interesting behavior of the MMSE MIMO receiver and produces the MMSE MIMO diversity at all rates. The diversity of the quasi-static flat-fading MIMO channel consisting of any arbitrary number of transmit and receive antennas…
We propose a deep-learning approach for the joint MIMO detection and channel decoding problem. Conventional MIMO receivers adopt a model-based approach for MIMO detection and channel decoding in linear or iterative manners. However, due to the complex MIMO signal model, the optimal solution to the joint MIMO detection and channel decoding problem (i.e., the maximum likelihood decoding of the transmitted codewords from the received MIMO signals) is computationally infeasible. As a practical measure, the current model-based MIMO receivers all use suboptimal MIMO decoding methods with affordable …
In this paper, we investigate a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with simultaneous information detection (ID) and energy harvesting (EH) receiver. This point-to-point system operates in the vicinity of active interfering nodes. The receiver performs power splitting where a portion of received signal undergoes analog energy harvesting circuitry. Further, the information content of the other portion is extracted after performing digital beamforming. In this MIMO system, information carrier eigen-modes are not necessarily the eigen-modes with the strongest energy level. Hence, it is b…
We consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system that uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Several receivers are developed for data detection of MU-MIMO transmissions where two users share the same OFDM time and frequency resources. The receivers have partial state information about the MU-MIMO transmission with each receiver having knowledge of the MU-MIMO channel, however the modulation constellation of the co-scheduled user is unknown. We propose a joint maximum likelihood (ML) modulation classification of the co-scheduled user and data detection r…
A new architecture called integer-forcing (IF) linear receiver has been recently proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels, wherein an appropriate integer linear combination of the received symbols has to be computed as a part of the decoding process. In this paper, we propose a method based on Hermite-Korkine-Zolotareff (HKZ) and Minkowski lattice basis reduction algorithms to obtain the integer coefficients for the IF receiver. We show that the proposed method provides a lower bound on the ergodic rate, and achieves the full receive diversity. Suitability of complex …
In this paper we investigate the achievable rate of LOS MIMO systems that use 1-bit quantization and spatial oversampling at the receiver. We propose that by using additional antennas at the receiver, the loss incurred due to the strong limitation of the quantization can be decreased. Mutual information results show that considerable rate gains can be achieved depending on the number and arrangement of the antennas. In some of the cases, even the full available rate from the transmitter can be attained. Furthermore, the results also reveal that two-dimensional antenna arrays can benefit more f…
We propose blind adaptive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) linear receivers for DS-CDMA systems using multiple transmit antennas and space-time block codes (STBC) in multipath channels. A space-time code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion based on constrained optimization techniques is considered and recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive algorithms are developed for estimating the parameters of the linear receivers. A blind space-time channel estimation method for MIMO DS-CDMA systems with STBC based on a subspace approach is also proposed along with an efficient RLS algorithm…
Linear receivers are considered as an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the performance of MMSE MIMO receivers in the limit of large antenna numbers in the presence of channel correlations. Using the replica method, we generalize our results obtained in arXiv:0810.0883 to Kronecker-product correlated channels and calculate the asymptotic mean and variance of the mutual information of a MIMO system of parallel MMSE subchannels. The replica method allows us to use the ties between the optimal receiver …
The question of whether the degrees of freedom (DoF) of multi-user networks can be enhanced even under isotropic fading and no channel state information (or output feedback) at the transmitters (CSIT) is investigated. Toward this end, the two-user MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) broadcast and interference channels are studied with no side-information whatsoever at the transmitters and with receivers equipped with full-duplex radios. The full-duplex feature allows for receiver cooperation because each receiver, in addition to receiving the signals sent by the transmitters, can also simul…
We design jamming resistant receivers to enhance the robustness of a massive MIMO uplink channel against jamming. In the pilot phase, we estimate not only the desired channel, but also the jamming channel by exploiting purposely unused pilot sequences. The jamming channel estimate is used to construct the linear receive filter to reduce impact that jamming has on the achievable rates. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically and numerically evaluated. These results show that the proposed scheme greatly improves the rates, as compared to conventional receivers. Moreover, the propo…
Cell-Free Massive MIMO comprises a large number of distributed single-antenna access points (APs) serving a much smaller number of users. There is no partitioning into cells and each user is served by all APs. In this paper, the uplink performance of cell-free systems with minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and large scale fading decoding (LSFD) receivers is investigated. The main idea of LSFD receiver is to maximize achievable throughput using only large scale fading coefficients between APs and users. Capacity lower bounds for MMSE and LSFD receivers are derived. An asymptotic approximation f…
Semi-definite relaxation (SDR) detector has been demonstrated to be successful in approaching maximum likelihood (ML) performance while the time complexity is only polynomial. We propose a new receiver jointly utilizing the forward error correction (FEC) code information in the SDR detection process. Strengthened by the code constraints, the joint SDR detector provides soft information of much improved reliability to downstream decoder and therefore outperforms existing receivers with substantial gain.
We consider unsourced random access with MIMO receiver - a crucial communication scenario for future 5G/6G wireless networks. We perform a projection-based decoder analysis and derive energy efficiency achievability bounds when channel state information is unknown at transmitters and the receiver (no-CSI scenario). The comparison to the maximum-likelihood (ML) achievability bounds by Gao et al. (2023) is performed. We show that there is a region where the new bound outperforms the ML bound. The latter fact should not surprise the reader as both decoding criteria are suboptimal when considering…
This letter introduces an analytical model that gives the asymptotic cumulative number of molecules absorbed by spherical receivers in a diffusive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) molecular communication (MC) system with pointwise transmitters. In the proposed model, the reciprocal effect among the fully absorbing (FA) receivers is described by using the concept of fictitious pointwise negative source of molecules, the best position of which for each spherical receiver being defined by its absorption barycenter. We show that there is an agreement between the proposed asymptotic model and …
In this paper, we propose a new combined message passing algorithm which allows belief propagation (BP) and mean filed (MF) applied on a same factor node, so that MF can be applied to hard constraint factors. Based on the proposed message passing algorithm, a iterative receiver is designed for MIMO-OFDM systems. Both BP and MF are exploited to deal with the hard constraint factor nodes involving the multiplication of channel coefficients and data symbols to reduce the complexity of the only BP used. The numerical results show that the BER performance of the proposed low complexity receiver clo…
High resolution analog to digital converters (ADCs) are conventionally used at the receiver terminals to store an accurate digital representation of the received signal, thereby allowing for reliable decoding of transmitted messages. However, in a wide range of applications, such as communication over millimeter wave and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the use of high resolution ADCs is not feasible due to power budget limitations. In the conventional fully digital receiver design, where each receiver antenna is connected to a distinct ADC, reducing the ADC resolution le…
Multiple antenna systems have been extensively used by standards designing multi-gigabit communication systems operating in bandwidth of several GHz. In this paper, we study the use of transmitter (Tx) beamforming techniques to improve the performance of a MIMO system with a low precision ADC. We motivate an approach to use eigenmode transmit beamforming (which imposes a diagonal structure in the complete MIMO system) and use an eigenmode power allocation which minimizes the uncoded BER of the finite precision system. Although we cannot guarantee optimality of this approach, we observe that ev…
In this paper we present low-complexity blind multi-input multi-output (MIMO) adaptive linear multiuser receivers for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems using multiple transmit antennas and space-time block codes (STBC) in multipath channels. A space-time code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion based on constrained optimization techniques and low-complexity stochastic gradient (SG) adaptive algorithms are developed for estimating the parameters of the space-time linear receivers. The receivers are designed by exploiting the unique structure imposed…
This paper investigates the achievable sum rate of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems employing linear minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receivers. We present a new analytic framework which unveils an interesting connection between the achievable sum rate with MMSE receivers and the ergodic mutual information achieved with optimal receivers. This simple but powerful result enables the vast prior literature on ergodic MIMO mutual information to be directly applied to the analysis of MMSE receivers. The framework is particularized to various Rayleigh and Rician channel scenar…
In this work, we develop a new iterative turbo receiver for LDPC-coded multi-antenna systems based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR). For a classical turbo receiver, forward error correction (FEC) code is only used at decoder. Nonetheless, by taking advantage of FEC code in the detection stage, our proposed SDR detector can output extrinsic information with much improved reliability to the decoder. We also propose a simplified SDR turbo receiver that solves only one SDR problem per codeword instead of solving multiple SDR problems in the iterative turbo processing. This scheme significantly red…
We design a jamming-resistant receiver scheme to enhance the robustness of a massive MIMO uplink system against jamming. We assume that a jammer attacks the system both in the pilot and data transmission phases. The key feature of the proposed scheme is that, in the pilot phase, we estimate not only the legitimate channel, but also the jamming channel by exploiting a purposely unused pilot sequence. The jamming channel estimate is used to constructed linear receive filters that reject the impact of the jamming signal. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically evaluated using asymp…
Typical receiver processing, targeting always the best achievable bit error rate performance, can result in a waste of resources, especially, when the transmission conditions are such that the best performance is orders of magnitude better than the required. In this work, a processing framework is proposed which allows adjusting the processing requirements to the transmission conditions and the required bit error rate. It applies a-posteriori probability receivers operating over multiple-input multiple-output channels. It is demonstrated that significant complexity savings can be achieved both…
This paper proposes a joint transmitter-receiver design to minimize the weighted sum power under the post-processing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (post-SINR) constraints for all subchannels. Simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm can not only satisfy the post-SINR constraints but also easily adjust the power distribution among the users by changing the weights accordingly. Hence the algorithm can be used to alleviates the adjacent cell interference by reducing the transmitting power to the edge users without performance penalty.
The capacity of a discrete-time multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Gaussian channel with output quantization is investigated for different receiver architectures. A general formulation of this problem is proposed in which the antenna outputs are processed by analog combiners while sign quantizers are used for analog-to-digital conversion. To exemplify this approach, four analog receiver architectures of varying generality and complexity are considered: (a) multiple antenna selection and sign quantization of the antenna outputs, (b) single antenna selection and multilevel quantization, (c) multipl…
In this paper, we address the message-passing receiver design for the 3D massive MIMO-OFDM systems. With the aid of the central limit argument and Taylor-series approximation, a computationally efficient receiver that performs joint channel estimation and decoding is devised by the framework of expectation propagation. Specially, the local belief defined at the channel transition function is expanded up to the second order with Wirtinger calculus, to transform the messages sent by the channel transition function to a tractable form. As a result, the channel impulse response (CIR) between each …
An adaptive joint power allocation (JPA) and linear receiver design algorithm using the minimum bit error rate (MBER) criterion for a cooperative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) network is proposed. The system employs multiple relays with Distributed Space-Time Coding (DSTC) schemes and an Amplify-and-Forward (AF) strategy. It is designed according to a joint constrained optimization algorithm to determine the MBER power allocation parameters and the receive filter parameters for each transmitted symbol. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm obtains performance gain…
In this paper, we investigate the spectral efficiency (SE) of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a large number of antennas at the base station (BS) accounting for physical space constraints. In contrast to the vast body of related literature, which considers fixed inter-element spacing, we elaborate on a practical topology in which an increase in the number of antennas in a fixed total space induces an inversely proportional decrease in the inter-antenna distance. For this scenario, we derive exact and approximate expressions, as well as simplified upper/lower bounds, …
This paper investigated the uplink of multi-user massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with a mixed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) receiver architecture, in which some antennas are equipped with costly full-resolution ADCs and others with less expensive low-resolution ADCs. A closed-form approximation of the achievable spectral efficiency (SE) with the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) detector is derived. Based on this approximated result, the effects of the number of base station antennas, the transmit power, the proportion of full-resolution ADCs in the mixed-ADC structure, and the…
The fundamental limits of communication over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks are considered when a limited number of one-bit analog to digital converters (ADC) are used at the receiver terminals. Prior works have mainly focused on point-to-point communications, where receiver architectures consisting of a concatenation of an analog processing module, a limited number of one-bit ADCs with non-adaptive thresholds, and a digital processing module are considered. In this work, a new receiver architecture is proposed which utilizes adaptive threshold one-bit ADCs - where the ADC thre…
This paper gives the approximate capacity region of a two-user MIMO interference channel with limited receiver cooperation, where the gap between the inner and outer bounds is in terms of the total number of receive antennas at the two receivers and is independent of the actual channel values. The approximate capacity region is then used to find the degrees of freedom region. For the special case of symmetric interference channels, we also find the amount of receiver cooperation in terms of the backhaul capacity beyond which the degrees of freedom do not improve. Further, the generalized degre…
The stringent requirements on reliability and processing delay in the fifth-generation ($5$G) cellular networks introduce considerable challenges in the design of massive multiple-input-multiple-output (M-MIMO) receivers. The two main components of an M-MIMO receiver are a detector and a decoder. To improve the trade-off between reliability and complexity, a Bayesian concept has been considered as a promising approach that enhances classical detectors, e.g. minimum-mean-square-error detector. This work proposes an iterative M-MIMO detector based on a Bayesian framework, a parallel interference…
In this paper, we study the impact of carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation/compensation on the information rate performance of the zero-forcing (ZF) receiver in the uplink of a multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Analysis of the derived closed-form expression of the per-user information rate reveals that with increasing number of BS antennas $M$, an $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{M})$ array gain is achievable, which is same as that achieved in the ideal zero CFO scenario. Also it is observed that compared to the ideal zero CFO case, the performance degradation in the pres…
In this paper, we introduce the novel use of linear spatial precoding based on fixed and known parameters of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels to improve the performance of space-time coded MIMO systems. We derive linear spatial precoding schemes for both coherent (channel is known at the receiver) and non-coherent (channel is un-known at the receiver) space-time coded MIMO systems. Antenna spacing and antenna placement (geometry) are considered as fixed parameters of MIMO channels, which are readily known at the transmitter. These precoding schemes exploit the antenna placement i…
The uplink achievable rate of massive multiple- input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are assumed to equip at the base station (BS), is investigated in this paper. We assume that only imperfect channel station information is known at the BS. Then a new MMSE receiver is designed by taking not only the Gaussian noise, but also the channel estimation error and quantizer noise into account. By using the Stieltjes transform of random matrix, we further derive a tight asymptotic equivalent for the uplink achievable rate with proposed MMSE …
Linear receivers are an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the information-theoretic performance of MIMO linear receivers in two different asymptotic regimes. For fixed number of antennas, we investigate the limit of error probability in the high-SNR regime in terms of the Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT). Following this, we characterize the error probability for fixed SNR in the regime of large (but finite) number of antennas. As far as the DMT is concerned, we report a negative result: we show …
In this paper, a joint power allocation algorithm with minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) receiver for a cooperative Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) network which employs multiple relays and a Decode-and-Forward (DF) strategy is proposed. A Distributed Space-Time Coding (DSTC) scheme is applied in each relay node. We present a joint constrained optimization algorithm to determine the power allocation parameters and the MMSE receive filter parameter vectors for each transmitted symbol in each link, as well as the channel coefficients matrix. A Stochastic Gradient (SG) algorithm is deri…
In this paper, we propose a MIMO receiver algorithm that exploits {\em channel hardening} that occurs in large MIMO channels. Channel hardening refers to the phenomenon where the off-diagonal terms of the ${\bf H}^H{\bf H}$ matrix become increasingly weaker compared to the diagonal terms as the size of the channel gain matrix ${\bf H}$ increases. Specifically, we propose a message passing detection (MPD) algorithm which works with the real-valued matched filtered received vector (whose signal term becomes ${\bf H}^T{\bf H}{\bf x}$, where ${\bf x}$ is the transmitted vector), and uses a Gaussia…
Much stringent reliability and processing latency requirements in ultra-reliable-low-latency-communication (URLLC) traffic make the design of linear massive multiple-input-multiple-output (M-MIMO) receivers becomes very challenging. Recently, Bayesian concept has been used to increase the detection reliability in minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) linear receivers. However, the latency processing time is a major concern due to the exponential complexity of matrix inversion operations in MMSE schemes. This paper proposes an iterative M-MIMO receiver that is developed by using a Bayesian concept a…
Semi-definite relaxation (SDR) detector has been demonstrated to be successful in approaching maximum likelihood (ML) performance while the time complexity is only polynomial. We propose a new receiver jointly utilizing the forward error correction (FEC) code information in the SDR detection process. Strengthened by code constraints, the joint SDR detector substantially improves the overall receiver performance. For further performance boost, the ML-SDR detector is adapted to MAP-SDR detector by incorporating a priori information in the cost function. Under turbo principle, MAP-SDR detector ta…
We consider the three-receiver Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel with an arbitrary number of antennas at each of the transmitter and the receivers. We investigate the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region of the channel when each receiver requests a private message, and may know some of the messages requested by the other receivers as receiver message side information (RMSI). We establish the DoF region of the channel for all 16 possible non-isomorphic RMSI configurations by deriving tight inner and outer bounds on the region. To derive the inner bounds, we first propo…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are required to communicate reliably at high spectral bands using a large number of antennas, while operating under strict power and cost constraints. In order to meet these constraints, future MIMO receivers are expected to operate with low resolution quantizers, namely, utilize a limited number of bits for representing their observed measurements, inherently distorting the digital representation of the acquired signals. The fact that MIMO receivers use their measurements for some task, such as symbol detection and channel estimation, other than r…
We study the performance region of a general multicell downlink scenario with multiantenna transmitters, hardware impairments, and low-complexity receivers that treat interference as noise. The Pareto boundary of this region describes all efficient resource allocations, but is generally hard to compute. We propose a novel explicit characterization that gives Pareto optimal transmit strategies using a set of positive parameters---fewer than in prior work. We also propose an implicit characterization that requires even fewer parameters and guarantees to find the Pareto boundary for every choice …
In this letter, we extend the sparse Kronecker-product (SKP) coding scheme, originally designed for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) unsourced random access (URA). With the SKP coding adopted for MIMO transmission, we develop an efficient Bayesian iterative receiver design to solve the intended challenging trilinear factorization problem. Numerical results show that the proposed design outperforms the existing counterparts, and that it performs well in all simulated settings with various antenna sizes and active-user numbers.
Limited-backhaul cell-free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), in which the fog radio access network (F-RAN) is implemented to exchange the information between access points (APs) and the central processing unit (CPU), is investigated. We introduce a novel approach where the APs estimate the channel and send back the quantized version of the estimated channel and the quantized version of the received signal to the central processing unit. The Max algorithm and the Bussgang theorem are exploited to model the optimum uniform quantization. The ergodic achievable rates are derived. We s…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) systems operating over a wide bandwidth and using a large number of antennas impose a heavy burden on power consumption. In a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink, analog-to-digital con- verters (ADCs) would be the primary consumer of power in the base station receiver. This paper proposes a bit allocation (BA) method for mmWave multi-user (MU) massive MIMO systems under a power constraint. We apply ADCs to the outputs of an analog phased array for beamspace projection to exploit mmWave channel sparsity. We relax a mean square quantization error (MSQE) …
In this paper, we consider the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multi-receiver wiretap channel in which a transmitter wants to have confidential communication with an arbitrary number of users in the presence of an external eavesdropper. We derive the secrecy capacity region of this channel for the most general case. We first show that even for the single-input single-output (SISO) case, existing converse techniques for the Gaussian scalar broadcast channel cannot be extended to this secrecy context, to emphasize the need for a new proof technique. Our new proof technique makes u…
Precoding with block diagonalization is an attractive scheme for approaching sum capacity in multiuser multiple input multiple output (MIMO) broadcast channels. This method requires either global channel state information at every receiver or an additional training phase, which demands additional system planning. In this paper we propose a lattice based multi-user precoder that uses block diagonalization combined with pre-equalization and perturbation for the multiuser MIMO broadcast channel. An achievable sum rate of the proposed scheme is derived and used to show that the proposed technique …
In this paper, we investigate the capacity of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems corrupted by complex-valued additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) when both the transmitter and the receiver employ 1-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and 1-bit analog-to-digital-converters (ADCs). As a result of 1-bit DACs and ADCs, the transmitted and received symbols, as well as the transmit- and receive-side channel state information (CSI), are assumed to be quantized to 1-bit of information. The derived results show that the capacity of the considered massive MIMO system is $2N$ and $…
Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising new solution to provide convenient and perpetual energy supplies to wireless networks. In practice, WPT is implementable by various technologies such as inductive coupling, magnetic resonate coupling, and electromagnetic (EM) radiation, for short-/mid-/long-range applications, respectively. In this paper, we consider the EM or radio signal enabled WPT in particular. Since radio signals can carry energy as well as information at the same time, a unified study on simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is pursued. Specifically, th…
We analyze scheduling algorithms for multiuser communication systems with users having multiple antennas and linear receivers. When there is no feedback of channel information, we consider a common round robin scheduling algorithm, and derive new exact and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) maximum sum-rate results for the maximum ratio combining (MRC) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers. We also present new analysis of MRC, zero forcing (ZF) and MMSE receivers in the low SNR regime. When there are limited feedback capabilities in the system, we consider a common practical scheduling…
We study the Gaussian MIMO wiretap channel with a transmitter, a legitimate receiver, an eavesdropper and an external helper, each equipped with multiple antennas. The transmitter sends confidential messages to its intended receiver, while the helper transmits jamming signals independent of the source message to confuse the eavesdropper. The jamming signal is assumed to be treated as noise at both the intended receiver and the eavesdropper. We obtain a closed-form expression for the structure of the artificial noise covariance matrix that guarantees no decrease in the secrecy capacity of the w…
This paper proposes a stochastic geometry framework to analyze the SINR and rate performance in a large-scale uplink massive MIMO network. Based on the model, expressions are derived for spatial average SINR distributions over user and base station distributions with maximum ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers. We show that using massive MIMO, the uplink SINR in certain urban marco-cell scenarios is limited by interference. In the interference-limited regime, the results reveal that for MRC receivers, a super-linear (polynomial) scaling law between the number of base station …
DOA estimation for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system can provide ultra-high-resolution angle estimation. However, due to the high computational complexity and cost of all digital MIMO systems, a hybrid analog digital (HAD) structure MIMO was proposed. In this paper, a fast ambiguous phase elimination method is proposed to solve the problem of direction-finding ambiguity caused by the HAD MIMO. Only two-data-blocks are used to realize DOA estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed method can greatly reduce the estimation delay with a slight performance loss.
This letter proposes a joint pilot and payload power allocation (JPA) scheme to mitigate the error propagation problem for uplink multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) systems. A base station equipped with a maximum ratio combining and successive interference cancellation (MRC-SIC) receiver is adopted for multiuser detection. The average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (ASINR) of each user during the MRC-SIC decoding is analyzed by taking into account the error propagation due to the channel estimation error. Furthermore, the JPA design is formulated…
In this paper, we propose a low complexity graph-based linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) equalizer in order to remove inter-symbol and inter-stream interference in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication. The proposed state space representation inflicted on the graph provides linearly increasing computational complexity with block length. Also, owing to the Gaussian assumption used in the presented cycle-free factor graph, the complexity of the suggested equalizer structure is not affected by the size of the signalling space. In addition, we introduce an efficient way of com…
We study the performance of uplink transmission in a large-scale (massive) MIMO system, where all the transmitters have single antennas and the receiver (base station) has a large number of antennas. Specifically, we analyze achievable degrees of freedom of the system without assuming channel state information at the receiver. Also, we quantify the amount of power saving that is possible with increasing number of receive antennas.
We carry out a theoretical analysis of the uplink (UL) of a massive MIMO system with per-user channel correlation and Rician fading, using two processing approaches. Firstly, we examine the linear minimum-mean-square-error receiver under training-based imperfect channel estimates. Secondly, we propose a statistical combining technique that is more suitable in environments with strong Line-of-Sight (LoS) components. We derive closed-form asymptotic approximations of the UL spectral efficiency (SE) attained by each combining scheme in single and multi-cell settings, as a function of the system p…
In a multiple transmit antenna, single antenna per receiver downlink channel with limited channel state feedback, we consider the following question: given a constraint on the total system-wide feedback load, is it preferable to get low-rate/coarse channel feedback from a large number of receivers or high-rate/high-quality feedback from a smaller number of receivers? Acquiring feedback from many receivers allows multi-user diversity to be exploited, while high-rate feedback allows for very precise selection of beamforming directions. We show that there is a strong preference for obtaining high…
