Material line defects are one-dimensional structures but the search and proof of electron behaviour consistent with the reduced dimension of such defects has been so far unsuccessful. Here we show using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy that twin-grain boundaries in the layered semiconductor MoSe2 exhibit parabolic metallic bands. The one-dimensional nature is evident from a charge density wave transition, whose periodicity is given by kF/π, consistent with scanning tunneling microscopy and angle resolved photoemission measurements. Most importantly, we provide evidence for spin- and charge-separation, the hallmark of one-dimensional quantum liquids. Our studies show that the spectral line splits into distinctive spinon and holon excitations whose dispersions exactly follow the energy-momentum dependence calculated by a Hubbard model with suitable finite-range interactions. Our results also imply that quantum wires and junctions can be isolated in line defects of other transition metal dichalcogenides, which may enable quantum transport measurements and devices.
We present the first observation of a prominent quasi-particle peak in the photoemission spectrum of the metallic phase of V_2O_3 and report new spectral calculations that combine the local density approximation with the dynamical mean-field theory (using quantum Monte Carlo simulations) to show the development of such a distinct peak with decreasing temperature. The experimental peak width and weight are significantly larger than in the theory.
We have investigated charge dynamics and electronic structures for single crystals of metallic layered nickelates, R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu), isostructural to La2-xSrxCuO4. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the barely-metallic Eu0.9Sr1.1NiO4 (R=Eu, x=1.1) has revealed a large hole surface of x2-y2 character with a high-energy pseudogap of the same symmetry and comparable magnitude with those of underdoped (x<0.1) cuprates, although the antiferromagnetic interactions are one order of magnitude smaller. This finding strongly indicates that the momentum-dependent pseudogap feature in the …
Metallic K3C60 shows pronounced structure and a sharp Fermi edge in integrated photoemission spectra (PES) while the insulating K4C60 and K6C60 phases display only a broad structureless peak. We find that both types of spectra can be explained by the coupling to the optic vibrations of the K+/C60n- ionic lattice. This is suppressed in K3C60 due to metallic screening but is strong in the insulating phases. We use the non-crossing approximation to calculate the density of states (DOS) of electrons in K3C60 coupled to the intramolecular Hg modes in good agreement with the experiment. For K4C60 an…
Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we report the first band dispersions and distinct features of the bulk Fermi surface (FS) in the paramagnetic metallic phase of the prototypical metal-insulator transition material V$_2$O$_3$. Along the $c$-axis we observe both an electron pocket and a triangular hole-like FS topology, showing that both V 3$d$ $a_{1g}$ and $e_g^π$ states contribute to the FS. These results challenge the existing correlation-enhanced crystal field splitting theoretical explanation for the transition mechanism and pave the way for the solution of this myste…
We have performed soft-X-ray angle resolved photoemission for metallic V$_2$O$_3$. Combining a micro focus beam (40 x 65 $μ$m$^2$) and micro positioning techniques with a long working distance microscope, we have succeeded in observing band dispersions from tiny cleavage surfaces with typical size of the several tens of $μ$m. The photoemission spectra show a clear position dependence reflecting the morphology of the cleaved sample surface. By selecting high quality flat regions on the sample surface, we have succeeded in band mapping using both photon-energy and polar-angle dependences, openin…
A nearly free electron metal and a Mott insulating state can be thought of as opposite ends of possibilities for the motion of electrons in a solid. In the magnetic oxide metal PdCrO$_{2}$, these two coexist as alternating layers. Using angle resolved photoemission, we surprisingly find sharp band-like features in the one-electron removal spectral function of the correlated subsystem. We show that these arise because a hole created in the Mott layer moves to and propagates in the metallic layer while retaining memory of the Mott layer's magnetism. This picture is quantitatively supported by a …
Time-resolved photoemission experiments can reveal fascinating quantum dynamics of correlated electrons. However, the thermalization of the electronic system is typically so fast that very short probe pulses are necessary to resolve the time evolution of the quantum state, and this leads to poor energy resolution due to the energy-time uncertainty relation. Although the photoemission intensity can be calculated from the nonequilibrium electronic Green functions, the converse procedure is therefore difficult. We analyze a hypothetical time-resolved photoemission experiment on a correlated elect…
Motivated by the recent optical and photoemission measurements on half-metallic ferromagnetic three-dimensional manganites, we combine a tight-binding fit of the one-particle bandstructure with the dynamical mean-field theory, which treats the dynamical orbital correlations and the combination of Jahn-Teller and doping-induced disorder on the same footing. We show how all of the above effects are necessary to obtain good semiquantitative agreement with experimental features. As applications, we show how modest external magnetic fields drive drastic changes in the optical spectrum, demonstratin…
We present genuine bulk Ir 5d jeff states of layered perovskite iridates obtained by hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) with s- and p-polarized lights. HAXPES spectra of Sr2IrO4 and Ba2IrO4 are well reproduced by the quasi-particle densities of states calculated by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). It is demonstrated that the insulating nature of the iridates is triggered by antiferromagnetic correlation (Slater type) combined with electron correlation (Mott type). The extremely-low-energy bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy reveals …
We compare the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the hole-doped Cu-O chains in PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (Pr123) and in PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ (Pr124). While, in Pr123, a dispersive feature from the chain takes a band maximum at $k_b$ (momentum along the chain) $\sim$ $π/4$ and loses its spectral weight around the Fermi level, it reaches the Fermi level at $k_b$ $\sim$ $π/4$ in Pr124. Although the chains in Pr123 and Pr124 are approximately 1/4-filled, they show contrasting behaviors: While the chains in Pr123 have an instability to charge ordering, those in Pr124 avoid it and show an interesting…
Electronic structures of very dilute Cr- or Ru-doped Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}MnO_{3} (NAMO; A=Ca, Sr) manganites have been investigated using the Mn and Cr 2p -> 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). All the Cr- and Ru-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn e_g spectra near E_F, consistent with their metallic ground states. The Cr 3d states with t^3_{2g} configuration are at ~ 1.3 eV below E_F, and the Cr e_{g} states do not participate in the formation of the band near E_F. Cr- and Ru-induced ferromagnetism and insulator-to-metal transitions can be understood with …
We report here on the electronic structure of electron-doped half-metallic ferromagnetic perovskites such Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$FeMoO$_6$ ($x$=0-0.6) as obtained from high-resolved valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (PES). By comparing the PES spectra with band structure calculations, a distinctive peak at the Fermi level (E$_F$) with predominantly (Fe+Mo) t$_{2g}^\downarrow$ character has been evidenced for all samples, irrespectively of the $x$ values investigated. Moreover, we show that the electron doping due to the La substitution provides selectively delocalized carriers to the t$_{2g}^\d…
We report the evolution of the $k$-space electronic structure of lightly doped bulk Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ with uniaxial strain. Using ultrathin plate-like crystals, we achieve strain levels up to $-4.1\%$, sufficient to suppress the Mott phase and access the previously unexplored metallic state at low temperature. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments performed while tuning the uniaxial strain reveal that metallicity emerges from a marked redistribution of charge within the Ru $t_{2g}$ shell, accompanied by a sudden collapse of the spectral weight in the lower Hubbard band and the emergence of …
Recent studies suggest that an exemplary Kondo insulator SmB6 belongs to a new class of topological insulators (TIs), in which non-trivial spin-polarized metallic states emerge on surface upon the formation of Kondo hybridization gap in the bulk. Remarkably, the bulk resistivity reaches more than 20 Ohm cm at 4 K, making SmB6 a candidate for a so-called bulk-insulating TI. We here investigate optical-pulse responses of SmB6 by pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. Surface photovoltage effect is observed below ~90 K. This indicates that an optically-active band bending region develops bene…
Electronic Coulomb correlations lead to characteristic signatures in the spectroscopy of transition metal pnictides and chalcogenides: quasi-particle renormalizations, lifetime effects or incoherent badly metallic behavior above relatively low coherence temperatures are measures of many-body effects due to local Hubbard and Hund's couplings. We review and compare the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments (ARPES) and of combined density functional dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations. We emphasize the doping-dependence of the quasi-particle mass renorma…
Perovskite rhodates are characterized by intermediate strengths of both electronic correlation as well as spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and usually behave as moderately correlated metals. A recent publication (Phys. Rev. B 95, 245121(2017)) on epitaxial SrRhO$_3$ thin films unexpectedly reported a bad-metallic behavior and suggested the occurrence of antiferromagnetism below 100 K. We studied this SrRhO$_3$ thin film by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and found a very small density of states (DOS) at Fermi level, which is consistent with the reported bad-metallic behavior. However, this negl…
Numerous angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of a wide class of low-density metallic systems, ranging from doped transition metal oxides to quasi two-dimensional interfaces between insulators, exhibit phonon sidebands below the quasi-particle peak as a unique hallmark of polaronic correlations. Here, we single out properties of ARPES spectra that can provide a robust estimate of the effective range (screening length) of the electron-phonon interaction, regardless of the limited experimental resolution, dimensionality and particular features of the electronic structure, fa…
We have performed a photoemission study of Ti$_{4}$O$_{7}$ around its two transition temperatures so as to cover the metallic, high-temperature insulating (bipolaron-liquid), and low-temperature insulating (bipolaron-crystal) phases. While the spectra of the low-temperature insulating phase show a finite gap at the Fermi level, the spectra of the high-temperature insulating phase are gapless, which is interpreted as a soft Coulomb gap due to dynamical disorder. We suggest that the spectra of the high-temperature disordered phase of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$, which exhibits a charge order-disorder transi…
The chemical states of the ZnGeP$_{2}$:Mn interface, which shows ferromagnetism above room-temperature, has been studied by photoemission spectroscopy. Mn deposition on the ZnGeP$_2$ substrate heated to 400$^{\circ}$C induced Mn substitution for Zn and then the formation of metallic Mn-Ge-P compounds. Depth profile studies have shown that Mn 3$d$ electrons changed their character from itinerant to localized along the depth, and in the deep region, dilute divalent Mn species ($\textless$ 5 % Mn) was observed with a coexisting metallic Fermi edge of non-Mn 3$d$ character. The possibility of hole…
The valence band electronic structure of Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ has been investigated across its paramagnetic metallic (PMM) - ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) - antiferromagnetic insulator (AFMI) transition. Using surface sensitive high resolution photoemission we have conclusively demonstrated the presence of a pseudogap of magnitude 80 meV in the near Fermi level electronic spectrum in the PMM and FMM phases and finite intensity at the Fermi level in the charge ordering (CO)-AFMI phase. The pseudogap behavior is explained in terms of the strong electron-phonon interaction and the formation…
Bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) reveals for as-grown epitaxial films of half-metallic ferromagnetic CrO2(100) a pronounced screening feature in the Cr 2p3/2 core level and an asymmetry in the O 1s core level. This gives evidence of a finite, metal-type Fermi edge, which is surprisingly not observed in HAXPES. A spectral weight shift in HAXPES away from the Fermi energy is attributed to single-ion recoil effects due to high energy photoelectrons. In conjunction with inverse PES the intrinsic correlated Mott-Hubbard-type electronic structure is unravelled, yielding …
The interplay between long-range and local Coulomb repulsion in strongly interacting electron systems is explored through a two-dimensional Hubbard-Wigner model. An unconventional metallic state is found in which collective low-energy excitations characteristic of the Wigner crystal induce a flow of electrical current despite the absence of one-electron spectral weight at the Fermi surface. Photoemission experiments on certain quarter-filled layered molecular crystals should observe a gap in the excitation spectrum whereas optical spectroscopy should find a finite Drude weight indicating metal…
We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results of A-site ordered perovskite CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$. We have observed the clear band dispersions, which are shifted to the higher energy by 1.7 eV and show the band narrowing around 2 eV in comparison with the local density approximation calculations. In addition, the high energy multiplet structures of Cu 3$d^8$ final-states have been found around 8 - 13 eV. These results reveal that CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ is a Mott-type insulator caused by the strong correlation effects of the Cu 3$d$ electrons well hybridized with O 2$p$ st…
We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results for thin films of the three-dimensional manganese perovskite La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$. We show that the transition temperature ($T_c$) from the paramagnetic insulating to ferromagnetic metallic state is closely related to details of the electronic structure, particularly to the spectral weight at the ${\bf k}$-point, where the sharpest step at the Fermi level was observed. We found that this ${\bf k}$-point is the same for all the samples, despite their different $T_c$. The change of $T_c$ is discussed in terms of kinetic energy o…
Here we study the transport properties of a nickelate compound, namely LaNiO2 using density functional theory (DFT) in conjunction with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). An interacting multi-orbital spin-resolved scenario for LaNiO2 yields a metallic ground state with ferromagnetic correlations. The latter contrasts an antiferromagnetic order reported earlier. The metallic behaviour persists even at large values of the interaction energies. Further support of the metallic state is provided by the angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data.
We calculate the finite temperature X-ray photoemission spectroscopy for the Falicov-Kimball model using a Weiner-Hopf sum equation approach. In the metallic state, the core-hole spectral function shows two side peaks corresponding to the creation of a core-hole on an empty site (or a doubly occupied site) and also has two nearly degenerate central peaks (because of our choice of the model parameters) corresponding to the creation of a core-hole on a singly occupied site. The nearly doubly degenerate central peaks merge into a single peak at higher temperatures. In the insulating state, we obt…
We present a core-level photoemission study of Sr3(Ru 1-xMnx)2O7, in which we monitor the evolution of the Ru-3d fine structure versus Mn substitution and probing depth. In both Ru 3d3/2 and 3d5/2 core levels we observe a clear suppression of the metallic features, i.e. the screened peaks, implying a sharp transition from itinerant to localized character already at low Mn concentrations. The comparison between soft and hard x-ray photoemission, which provides tunable depth sensitivity, reveals that the degree of localized/metallic character for Ru is different at the surface than in the bulk.
The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent. A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d $\to$ 4f absorption edge, suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions…
Using high-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observed a thermal spin depolarization to which all spin-polarized electrons contribute. Furthermore we observed a distinct minority spin state near the Fermi level and a corresponding depolarization that seldom contributes to demagnetization. The origin of this depolarization has been identified as the many-body effect characteristics of half-metallic ferromagnets. Our investigation opens an experimental field of itinerant ferromagnetic physics focusing on phenomena with sub-meV energy scale.
The nature of metallicity and the level of electronic correlations in the antiferromagnetically ordered parent compounds are two important open issues for the iron-based superconductivity. We perform a temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Fe1.02Te, the parent compound for iron chalcogenide superconductors. Deep in the antiferromagnetic state, the spectra exhibit a "peak-dip-hump" line shape associated with two clearly separate branches of dispersion, characteristics of polarons seen in manganites and lightly-doped cuprates. As temperature increases towards t…
We studied the electronic structure of rare-earth ditelluride (ReTe_2 : Re = La, Pr, Sm, and Gd) using photoemission spectroscopy. From the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study of the 3d core levels of rare-earth elements, we found that all the rare earth elements are trivalent. We have also made theoretical calculations using the Gunnarsson and Schoenhammer approximation and multiplet calculations for the rare earth elements to find that the La and Gd~3d peaks are well explained using our calculations. There is no considerable change in the line-shape of the Te~3d peaks depending on d…
We study the Kondo effect in an ultrasmall metallic grain, i.e. small enough to have a discrete energy-level spectrum, by calculating the susceptibility chi of the magnetic impurity. Our quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and analytic solution of a simple model, show that the behavior changes dramatically depending on whether the number of electrons in the grain is even or odd. We suggest that the measurements of chi provide an effective experimental way of probing the grain's number parity.
Effect of level statistics on local electronic states and local magnetism in nanoscale metallic grains with transition-metal impurity in the ballistic regime is studied. It is shown that the mean occupation of local electron and the local magnetic moment in nanoscale metallic grains with odd conduction electrons are larger than those with even conduction electrons. The effect of even-odd parity on the condition for the occurrence of local magnetic moment is also discussed, it is found that the critical value $ρ_{d}(0)U_{c}$ for the formation of local moment in nanoscale metallic grains is much…
We present an investigation on electronic structure of 1T-TiTe2 material via high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), utilizing tunable photon energy excitations. The typical semimetal-like electronic structure is observed and examined, where multiple hole pockets related to Te 5p bands and one electron pockets related to Ti 3d band are populated. The obtained results reveals i) a pronounced three-dimensional (3D) electronic structure of 1T-TiTe2 with typical semi-metallic features, for both the Ti 3d and the Te 5p states; ii) multiple Fermi surface (FS) sheets and co…
By comparing single-particle spectral functions of t-J and Hubbard models with recent angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) results for LSCO and Nd-LSCO, we can decide where holes go as a function of doping, and more specifically, which type of stripe (bond-, site-centered) is present in these materials at a given doping. For dopings greater than about 12% our calculation shows furthermore that the holes prefer to proliferate out of the metallic stripes into the neighboring antiferromagnetic domains. The spectra were calculated by a cluster perturbation technique, for which we present an altern…
The angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is one powerful experimental technique to study the electronic structure of materials. As many electron materials show unusual many-body correlations, the technique to detect directly these many-body correlations will play important roles in the study of their many-body physics. In this article, we propose a technique to detect directly the two-particle correlations, a coincidence ARPES (cARPES) where two incident photons excite two respective photoelectrons which are detected in coincidence. While the one-photon-absorption and one-photoele…
Perovskite-type BiNiO$_3$ is an insulating antiferromagnet in which a charge disproportionation occurs at the Bi site. La substitution for Bi suppresses the charge disproportionation and makes the system metallic. We have measured the photoemission and x-ray absorption (XAS) spectra of Bi$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$NiO$_{3}$ to investigate how the electronic structure changes with La doping. From Ni $2p$ XAS, we observed an increase of the valence of Ni from 2+ toward 3+. Combined with the core-level photoemission study, it was found that the average valence of Bi remains $\sim 4+$ and that the Ni valence…
We study the Kondo effect generated by a single magnetic impurity embedded in an ultrasmall metallic grain, to be called a ``Kondo box''. We find that the Kondo resonance is strongly affected when the mean level spacing in the grain becomes larger than the Kondo temperature, in a way that depends on the parity of the number of electrons on the grain. We show that the single-electron tunneling conductance through such a grain features Kondo-induced Fano-type resonances of measurable size, with an anomalous dependence on temperature and level spacing.
We review recent experimental and theoretical work on ultrasmall metallic grains, i.e. grains sufficiently small that the conduction electron energy spectrum becomes discrete. The discrete excitation spectrum of an individual grain can be measured by the technique of single-electron tunneling spectroscopy: the spectrum is extracted from the current-voltage characteristics of a single-electron transistor containing the grain as central island. We review experiments studying the influence on the discrete spectrum of superconductivity, nonequilibrium excitations, spin-orbit scattering and ferroma…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy was used to investigate the evolution of the electronic structure across the metal-insulator transition in bi-layer manganite $La_{1.24}Sr_{1.76}Mn_2O_7$. We found that this system is a metal for $T<T_C$, a local metal but global insulator for $T<T_C<T^*$, and a global insulator for $T>T^*$. These results indicate the critical role of electronic phase separation and percolation effects for the metal-insulator transition in $La_{1.24}Sr_{1.76}Mn_2O_7$.
Angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been performed on Bi2Ir2O7 single crystals, a prototypical example of the pyrochlore iridates. The density of states, the Fermi surface, and the near Fermi level band dispersion in the plane perpendicular to the (111) direction were all measured and found to be in overall agreement with our LDA + SOC density functional calculations. Our observations indicate the general validity of the LDA + SOC-based approach for the electronic structure of pyrochlore iridates, raising the possibility that some of the novel predicted phases such as quantum spin i…
Topological Kondo insulators are a new class of topological insulators in which metallic surface states protected by topological invariants reside in the bulk band gap at low temperatures. Unlike other three-dimensional topological insulators, a truly insulating bulk state, which is critical for potential applications in next-generation electronic devices, is guaranteed by many-body effects in the topological Kondo insulator. Furthermore, the system has strong electron correlations that can serve as a testbed for interacting topological theories. This topical review focuses on recent advances …
We consider a model for electron tunneling between a pair of ultrasmall metallic grains. Under appropriate circumstances, non-equilibrium final state effects can strongly enhance tunneling and produce electron-hole coherence between the grains. The model displays a quantum phase transition between a Coulomb blockaded state to a coherent state exhibiting subohmic tunneling conductance. The critical state of the junction exhibits a temperature independent resistance of order $h/e^2$. Finally we discuss the possible relevance to granular materials and quantum dots. In particular, similarities bet…
We analyze spectral functions of mesoscopic systems with large dimensionless conductance, which can be described by a universal Hamiltonian. We show that an important class of spectral functions are dominated by one single state only, which implies the existence of well-defined (i.e. infinite-lifetime) quasiparticles. Furthermore, the dominance of a single state enables us to calculate zero-temperature spectral functions with high accuracy using the density-matrix renormalization group. We illustrate the use of this method by calculating the tunneling density of states of metallic grains and t…
We review recent experimental and theoretical work on superconductivity in ultrasmall metallic grains, i.e. grains sufficiently small that the conduction electron energy spectrum becomes discrete. The discrete excitation spectrum of an individual grain can be measured by the technique of single-electron tunneling spectroscopy, and reveals parity effects indicative of pairing correlations in the grain. After introducing the discrete BCS model that has been used to model such grains, we review a phenomenological, grand-canonical, variational BCS theory describing the paramagnetic breakdown of th…
The three-dimensional Fermi surface structure of hole-doped metallic layered nickelate Eu2-xSrxNiO4 (x=1.1), an important counterpart to the isostructural superconducting cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4, is investigated by energy-dependent soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In addition to a large cylindrical hole Fermi surface analogous to the cuprates, we observe a Gamma-centered 3z2-r2-derived small electron pocket. This finding demonstrates that in the layered nickelate the 3z2-r2 band resides close to the x2-y2 one in energy. The resultant multi-band feature with varying orbital ch…
We have studied the effects of band filling and bandwidth control on the chemical potential in perovskite manganites $R_{1-x}A_x$MnO$_3$ ($R$ : rare earth, $A$ : alkaline earth) by measurements of core-level photoemission spectra. A suppression of the doping-dependent chemical potential shift was observed in and around the CE-type charge-ordered composition range, indicating that there is charge self-organization such as stripe formation or its fluctuations. As a function of bandwidth, we observed a downward chemical potential shift with increasing bandwidth due to the reduction of the orthorh…
We have performed an {\it in-situ} photoemission study of Pr_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 (PCMO) thin films grown on LaAlO_3 (001) substrates and observed the effect of epitaxial strain on the electronic structure. We found that the chemical potential shifted monotonically with doping, unlike bulk PCMO, implying the disappearance of incommensurate charge fluctuations of bulk PCMO. In the valence-band spectra, we found a doping-induced energy shift toward the Fermi level (E_F) but there was no spectral weight transfer, which was observed in bulk PCMO. The gap at E_F was clearly seen in the experimental band …
The density of non-quasiparticle states in the ferrimagnetic full-Heuslers Mn$_2$VAl alloy is calculated from first principles upon appropriate inclusion of correlations. In contrast to most half-metallic compounds, this material displays an energy gap in the majority-spin spectrum. For this situation, non-quasiparticle states are located below the Fermi level, and should be detectable by spin-polarized photoemission. This opens a new way to study many-body effects in spintronic-related materials.
This study investigated the electronic structure of SrTi$_{1-x}$V$_x$O$_3$ (STVO) thin films, which are solid solutions of strongly correlated transparent conductive oxide (TCO) SrVO$_3$ and oxide semiconductor SrTiO$_3$, using ${in situ}$ photoemission spectroscopy. STVO is one of the most promising candidates for correlated-metal TCO because it has the capability of optimizing the performance of transparent electrodes by varying ${x}$. Systematic and significant spectral changes were found near the Fermi level (${E_{\rm F}}$) as a function of ${x}$, while the overall electronic structure of …
In this study, we report the observation of a pseudogap associated with the insulator-metal transition in compositions of Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ system with no charge ordering. Our valence band photoemission study shows that the observed shifts in the near Fermi level density of states are abrupt at the Curie transtion and occur over an energy scale of $\sim$ 1 eV, strongly suggesting that the charge-ordering gap observed earlier in other manganites and the pseudogap observed here may indeed have same origin. These results could be understood within the framework of models based on electronic…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on YBa2Cu3O7-delta (Y123; delta = 0.06; Tc = 92 K). By accurately determining the Fermi surface and energy band dispersion, we solve long-standing controversial issues as to the anomalous electronic states of Y-based high-Tc cuprates. We unambiguously identified surface-bilayer-derived bonding and antibonding bands, together with their bulk counterparts. The surface bands are highly overdoped (hole concentration x = 0.29), showing no evidence for the gap opening or the dispersion anomaly in the antinodal region, while …
Atomic nuclei and nano-scale metallic grains are in the crossover regime of pairing correlations between the bulk limit, where the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity is valid, and the fluctuation-dominated regime, where BCS theory breaks down. In this fluctuation-dominated regime, the pairing gap is comparable to or smaller than the single-particle mean level spacing. We discuss thermal signatures of pairing correlations in nuclei and ultra-small metallic grains that survive despite the large fluctuations of the pairing field.
We report bulk-sensitive hard X-ray ($hν$ = 5.95 KeV) core level photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of single crystal V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ and the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ exhibits low binding energy "satellites" to the V $2p$ "main lines" in the metallic phase, which are suppressed in the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. In contrast, the Cu $2p$ spectra of Bi2212 do not show temperature dependent features, but a comparison with soft X-ray PES indicates a large increase in the $2p^5 3d^9$ "satellites" or $3d^9$ weight i…
Eu2Ir2O7, a candidate Weyl semimetal, shows an insulator-to-metal transition as a function of Bi substitution at the Eu site. In this work, we investigate the (Eu_1-xBi_x)2Ir2O7 series via Hard X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (HAXPES), where substitution of larger Bi3+ for Eu3+ is reported to result in an anomalous lattice contraction (20 %) for low Bi doping (3.5 %). Using HAXPES, we confirm that all the cations retain their nominal valence state throughout the series. The asymmetric nature of Bi core-level spectra for compositions in the metallic region indicates that Bi contributes to the …
The zero-field conductivities ($σ$) of the polycrystaline title materials, are governed by inter-grain transport. In the majority of cases their $σ$(T) can be described by the "fluctuation induced tunneling" model. Analysis of the results in terms of this model reveals two remarkable features: 1. For \emph{all} Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ samples of various microstructures, the tunneling constant (barrier width $\times$ inverse decay-length of the wave-function) is $\sim$ 2, indicating the existence of an intrinsic insulating boundary layer with a well defined electronic (and magnetic) structure. 2. The t…
The commensurate charge density wave (CDW) in the layered compound $1T$-TaS$_2$ has hitherto mostly been treated as a quasi two-dimensional phenomenon. Recent band structure calculations have, however, predicted that the CDW coexists with a nearly one-dimensional metallic dispersion perpendicular to the crystal planes. Using synchrotron radiation based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that this metallic band does in fact exist. Its occupied band width is in excellent agreement with predictions for a simple $τ_c$ stacking order of the CDW between adjacent layers and its period…
We present a detailed comparison of the electronic structure of BaFe2As2 in its paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases, through angle-resolved photoemission studies. Using different experimental geometries, we resolve the full elliptic shape of the electron pockets, including parts of dxy symmetry along its major axis that are usually missing. This allows us to define precisely how the hole and electron pockets are nested and how the different orbitals evolve at the transition. We conclude that the imperfect nesting between hole and electron pockets explains rather well the formation …
We consider a model self-energy consisting of an isotropic Fermi liquid term and a Marginal Fermi liquid term which is anisotropic over the Fermi surface, vanishing in the same directions as the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. This model self-energy gives a consistent description of experimental results from Angle-Dependent Magneto-Resistance (ADMR), specific heat, de Haas-van Alphen, and measurements of the quasi-particle dispersion near the Fermi surface from photoemission. In particular, we reconcile the strongly doping dependent anomalous scattering rate observed in ADMR with the al…
A nano-scale metallic grain in which the single-particle dynamics are chaotic is described by the so-called universal Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian includes a superconducting pairing term and a ferromagnetic exchange term that compete with each other: pairing correlations favor minimal ground-state spin, while the exchange interaction favors maximal spin polarization. Of particular interest is the fluctuation-dominated regime where the bulk pairing gap is comparable to or smaller than the single-particle mean level spacing and the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity breaks do…
