Shear responsive surfaces offer potential advances in a number of applications. Surface functionalisation using polymer brushes is one route to such properties, particularly in the case of entangled polymers. We report on neutron reflectometry measurements of polymer brushes in entangled polymer solutions performed under controlled shear, as well as coarse-grained computer simulations corresponding to these interfaces. Here we show a reversible and reproducible collapse of the brushes, increasing with the shear rate. Using two brushes of greatly different chain lengths and grafting densities, we demonstrate that the dynamics responsible for the structural change of the brush are governed by the free chains in solution rather than the brush itself, within the range of parameters examined. The phenomenon of the brush collapse could find applications in the tailoring of nanosensors, and as a way to dynamically control surface friction and adhesion.
Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are presented for a coarse-grained bead-spring model of ring polymer brushes under compression. Flexible polymer brushes are always disordered during compression, whereas semiflexible brushes tend to be ordered under sufficiently strong compression. Besides, the polymer monomer density of semiflexible polymer brush is very high near the polymer brush surface, inducing a peak value of free energy near the polymer brush surface. Therefore, by compressing nanoparticles (NPs) in semiflexible ring brush system, NPs tend to exhibit a closely packed single layer st…
Polymer brushes can grow on almost any solid surface, and by design, exhibit diverse properties and functionalities, thus they have been widely used in many emerging applications in engineering, energy, and medicine. In particular, some applications such as actuation, molecule release, and friction switch require the polymer brushes to change their heights between dry and wet states, and maximizing such height change is critical for the optimal performance of these applications. While scaling laws have long been proposed to qualitatively determine brush heights, a theory that can quantitativel…
Charged polymer brushes are layers of surface-tethered chains. Experimental systems are frequently strongly charged. Here we calculate phase diagrams for such brushes in terms of salt concentration n_s, grafting density and polymer backbone charge density. Electrostatic stiffening and counterion condensation effects arise which are absent from weakly charged brushes. In various phases chains are locally or globally fully stretched and brush height H has unique scaling forms; at higher salt concentrations we find H ~ n_s^(-1/3), in good agreement with experiment.
We consider a polymer brush grafted to a surface (acting as an electrode) and bearing a charged group at its free end. Using a second distant electrode, the brush is subject to a constant electric field. Based on a coarse-grained continuum model, we calculate the average brush height and find that the brush can stretch or compress depending on the applied field and charge end-group. We further look at an undulation mode of the flat polymer brush and find that the electrostatic energy scales linearly with the undulation wavenumber, $q$. Competition with surface tension, scaling as $q^2$, tends …
Friction between ring-polymer brushes at melt densities sliding past each other are studied using extensive course-grained molecular dynamics simulations and scaling arguments, and the results are compared to the friction between linear-polymer brushes. We show that for a velocity range spanning over three decades, the frictional forces measured for ring-polymer brushes are half the corresponding friction in case of linear brushes. In the linear-force regime, the weak inter-digitation of two ring brushes compared to linear brushes also leads to a lower number of binary collisions between the m…
I consider the ordering of dilute platelet additives when incorporated into an end-grafted polymer brush. The competition between wetting interactions and the anisotropic stress environment of the interior of the brush causes these platelet additives to either remain suspended at the outer edge of the brush laying flat against the brush surface (as bits of confetti at rest on the ground), or to invade the interior of the brush in which case the platelets stand end-on and in some cases protrude above the outer edge of the brush. The orientation of the additives is controlled by the ratio of the…
Neutral or charged polymers that are densely end-grafted to surfaces form brush-like structures and are highly stretched under good-solvent conditions. We discuss and compare relevant results from scaling models, self-consistent-field methods and MD simulation techniques and concentrate on the conceptual simple case of planar substrates. For neutral polymers the main quantity of interest is the brush height and the polymer density profile, which can be well predicted from self-consistent calculations and simulations. Charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) are of practical importance since they ar…
We determine the distribution of free ends and the monomer insertion potential in the strongly-stretched limit for regularly and statistically branched polymer brushes. We find that the end density flattens in the limit of very strong branching with a concomitant enhancement of the grafting surface end density. This enhancement ensures for a wide range of parameters that a parabolic potential profile is preserved, even for large positive curvature of the brush surface. This considerably simplifies the analysis of copolymer phases.
Ordering nanoparticles into a desired super-structure is often crucial for their technological applications. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the assembly of nanoparticles in a polymer brush randomly grafted to a planar surface as the solvent evaporates. Initially, the nanoparticles are dispersed in a solvent that wets the polymer brush. After the solvent evaporates, the nanoparticles are either inside the brush or adsorbed at the surface of the brush, depending on the strength of the nanoparticle-polymer interaction. For strong nanoparticle-polymer interactions, a 2-dimensional …
Molecular Dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained bead-spring model of flexible macromolecules tethered with one end to the surface of a cylindrical pore are presented. Chain length $N$ and grafting density $σ$ are varied over a wide range and the crossover from ``mushroom'' to ``brush'' behavior is studied for three pore diameters. The monomer density profile and the distribution of the free chain ends are computed and compared to the corresponding model of polymer brushes at flat substrates. It is found that there exists a regime of $N$ and $σ$ for large enough pore diameter where the brush…
Polymer brushes normally swell in a good solvent and collapse in a poor solvent. An abnormal response of polymer brushes, so-called co-nonsolvency, is the phenomenon where the brush counter-intuitively collapses in a good solvent mixture. In this work, we employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structural properties of the grafted polymers on the occurrence of co-nonsolvency. Brushes with various grafting densities were considered to study the effect of topological excluded volumes on the co-nonsolvency. We found that the brush height follows a novel scaling behavior of the …
We investigate the effect of mobile polymer brushes on proteins embedded in biological membranes by employing both Asakura-Oosawa type of theoretical model and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The brush polymer-induced depletion attraction between proteins changes non-monotonically with the size of brush. The depletion interaction, which is determined by the ratio of protein size to the grafting distance between brush polymers, increases linearly with brush size as long as the polymer brush height is shorter than the protein size. When the brush height exceeds the protein size, h…
Large scale Monte Carlo simulations of dense layers of grafted polymer chains in good solvent conditions are used to explore the relaxation of a polymer brush. Monomer displacements are analyzed for the directions parallel and perpendicular to the grafting plane. Auto-correlation functions of individual segments or chain sections are monitored as function of time. We demonstrate that the terminal relaxation time $τ$ of grafted layers well in the brush regime grows exponentially with degree of polymerization $N$ of the chains, $τ\propto N^{3}\exp(N/N_{e})$, with $N_{e}$ the entanglement degree …
From glycosylated cell surfaces to sterically stabilized liposomes, polymers attached to membranes attract biological and therapeutic interest. Can the scaling laws of polymer "brushes" describe the physical properties of these coats? We delineate conditions where the Alexander - de Gennes theory of polymer brushes successfully describes the intermembrane distance vs. applied osmotic stress data of Kenworthy et al. for PEG-grafted multilamellar liposomes [Biophys. J. (1995) 68:1921]. We establish that the polymer density and size in the brush must be high enough that, in a bulk solution of equ…
A comparative dynamic Monte Carlo simulation study of polydisperse living polymer brushes, created by surface initiated living polymerization, and conventional polymer monodisperse brush, comprising linear polymer chains, grafted to a planar substrate under good solvent conditions, is presented. The living brush is created by end-monomer (de)polymerization reaction after placing an array of initiators on a grafting plane in contact with a solution of initially non-bonded segments (monomers). At equilibrium, the monomer density profile ϕ(z) of the LPB is found to decline as ϕ(z) ~ z^{-α} with t…
A coarse-grained model to describe the lateral structure of a one-component polymer brush is presented. In this model, a single polymer chain is described by just two coordinates, namely the position of the grafted monomer, and the monomer on the non-grafted end. Due to its simplicity, the lateral arrangement of large numbers of structural units, each unit containing hundreds of polymers, can be analyzed. We consider here the corresponding low-energy configurations. Provided the grafting density is large enough, the latter all feature hexagonal order, even when the grafted monomers are distrib…
Using a coarse-grained bead-spring model for semi-flexible macromolecules forming a polymer brush, structure and dynamics of the polymers is investigated, varying chain stiffness and grafting density. The anchoring condition for the grafted chains is chosen such that their first bonds are oriented along the normal to the substrate plane. Compression of such a semi-flexible brush by a planar piston is observed to be a two-stage process: for small compressions the chains contract by "buckling" deformation whereas for larger compression the chains exhibit a collective (almost uniform) bending def…
We describe a microscope-based optical setup that allows us to perform space-and time-resolved measurements of the spectral reflectance of transparent substrates coated with ultrathin films. This technique is applied to investigate the behavior in water of thermosensitive polymer brushes made of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) grafted on glass. We show that spectral reflectance measurements yield quantitative information about the conformation and axial structure of the brushes as a function of temperature. We study how molecular parameters (grafting density, chain length) affect the hydra-tion st…
The structure of flexible polymers endgrafted in cylindrical pores of diameter D is studied as a function of chain length N and grafting density σ, assuming good solvent conditions. A phenomenological scaling theory, describing the variation of the linear dimensions of the chains with σ, is developed and tested by Molecular Dynamics simulations of a bead-spring model.
We develop a strong stretching approximation for a polymer brush made of self-avoiding polymer chains. The density profile of the brush and the distribution of the end monomer positions in stretching direction are computed and compared with simulation data. We find that our approach leads to a clearly better approximation as compared to previous approaches based upon Gaussian elasticity at low grafting densities (moderate chain stretching), for which corrections due to finite extensibility can be ignored.
We study the Brownian dynamics of flexible and semiflexible polymer chains densely grafted on a flat substrate, upon rapid quenching of the system when the quality of solvent becomes poor and chains attempt collapse into a globular state. The collapse process of such a polymer brush differs from individual chains, both in its kinetics and its structural morphology. We find that the resulting collapsed brush does not form a homogeneous dense layer, in spite of all chain monomers equally attracting each other via a model Lennard-Jones potential. Instead, a very distinct inhomogeneous density dis…
Bottle brushes are polymeric macromolecules made of a linear polymeric backbone grafted with side chains. The choice of the grafting density σg, the length ns the grafted side chains and their chemical nature fully determines the properties of each macromolecule, such as its elasticity and its folding behaviour. Typically, experimental bottle brushes are systems made of tens of thousands of monomeric units, rendering a computational approach extremely expensive, especially in the case of bottle brush solutions. A proper coarse graining description of these macromolecules thus appears essential…
The application of a polymer brush in sensing, actuation, self-folding, among others acutely depends on the tuneable bending of a brush-grafted substrate caused by the stress in the brush. However, the stress in a stimuli-responsive brush has not been investigated. In this work, we study the stress in the stimuli-responsive planar polymer brushes of neutral water-soluble polymers with low to very high graft densities using strong stretching theory (SST). First, SST with the Langevin force-extension relation for a polymer chain is extended to the study of stimuli-responsive brushes. Stress prof…
Polydisperse brushes obtained by reversible radical chain polymerization reaction onto a solid substrate with surface-attached initiators, are studied by means of an off-lattice Monte Carlo algorithm of living polymers (LP). Various properties of such brushes, like the average chain length and the conformational orientation of the polymers, or the force exerted by the brush on the opposite container wall, reveal power-law dependence on the relevant parameters. The observed molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the grafted LP decays much more slowly than the corresponding LP bulk system due to…
We use computer simulations to investigate the stability of a two-component polymer brush de-mixing on a curved template into phases of different morphological properties. It has been previously shown via molecular dynamics simulations that immiscible chains having different length and anchored to a cylindrical template will phase separate into striped phases of different widths oriented perpendicularly to the cylindrical axis. We calculate free energy differences for a variety of stripe widths, and extract simple relationships between the sizes of the two polymers, N_1 and N_2, and the free e…
We probe, using the Surface Forces Apparatus, the thermal response of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes of various grafting densities, grown from plasma-activated mica by means of surface-initiated polymerization. We thus show that dense thermoresponsive brushes collapse gradually as temperature is increased, and that grafting density greatly affects their ability to swell: the swelling ratio of the brushes, which characterizes the thickness variation between the swollen and the collapsed state, is found to decrease from $\sim 7$ to $\sim 3$ as the number of grafted chains per unit …
Non equilibrium coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics simulations of complex fluids, made up of polymer brushes tethered to planar surfaces immersed in a solvent yield non monotonic behavior of the friction coefficient as a function of the polymer grating density on the substrates, Γ, while the viscosity shows a monotonically increasing dependence on Γ. This effect is shown to be independent of the degree of polymerization, N, and the size of the system. It arises from the composition and the structure of the first particle layer adjacent to each surface that results from the confineme…
The stretching of brushes of long polymers grafted to a planar surface is investigated byMonte Carlo simulations in the limit of very high grafting densities, as achieved in recent experiments. The monomer density profiles are shown to deviate considerably from the parabolic limiting form predicted by self-consistent field theory. A rapid transition is observed from parabolic to fully stretched polymers, characterized by a dramatic change in the end-monomer height distribution and by a clear cross-over in the slope of the brush height versus scaled grafting density.
Conformations of a single-component bottle-brush polymer with a fully flexible backbone under poor solvent conditions are studied by molecular-dynamics simulations, using a coarse-grained bead-spring model with side chains of up to N=40 effective monomers. By variation of the solvent quality and the grafting density $σ$ with which side chains are grafted onto the flexible backbone, we study for backbone lengths of up to $N_b=100$ the crossover from the brush/coil regime to the dense collapsed state. At lower temperatures, where collapsed chains with a constant monomer density are observed, the…
Inwardly curved polymer brushes are present in cylindrical and spherical micelles or in membranes tubes and vesicles decorated with anchored polymers, and influence their stability. We consider such polymer brushes in good solvent and show that previous works, based on a self-similar concentric structure of the brush, are physically inconsistent. We use scaling laws to derive very simply the leading term of the free energy in the high curvature limit, where the osmotic pressure is the relevant physical ingredient. We also derive the complete conformation at all curvatures using a self-consiste…
When a liquid drop spreads on an adaptive substrate the latter changes its properties what may result in an intricate coupled dynamics of drop and substrate. Here we present a generic mesoscale hydrodynamic model for such processes that is written as a gradient dynamics on an underlying energy functional. We specify the model details for the example of a drop spreading on a dry polymer brush. There, liquid absorption into the brush results in swelling of the brush causing changes in the brush topography and wettability. The liquid may also advance within the brush via diffusion (or wicking) re…
There is ample evidence that polymer brushes reduce friction between surfaces. Several industrial applications take advantage of this fact, such as those in plastic bag production, where the brushes act as slip agents; however, the complex mechanisms that give rise to such reduction of friction are not yet fully understood. In this work we report coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics simulations carried out for surfaces functionalized with erukamide brushes, a polymer commonly used in the plastics industry as a slip agent between surfaces. We calculate their rheological properties, suc…
Due to the complex characteristics of bottle-brush polymers, it became a challenge to develop an efficient algorithm for studying such macromolecules under various solvent conditions or some constraints in the space by using computer simulations. In the limit of a bottle-brush polymer with a rather stiff backbone (straight rigid backbone), we generalize the variant of the biased chain growth algorithm, the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method, for simulating polymers with complex architecture, from star polymers to bottle-brush polymers, on the simple cubic lattice. With the high statistics of ou…
Using molecular simulations, we study the properties of a polymer brush in contact with an explicit solvent under Couette and Poiseuille flow. The solvent is comprised of chemically identical chains. We present evidence that individual, unentangled chains in the dense brush exhibit cyclic, tumbling motion and non-Gaussian fluctuations of the molecular orientations similar to the behaviour of isolated tethered chains in shear flow. The collective molecular motion gives rise to an inversion of hydrodynamic flow direction in the vicinity of the brush-coated surface. Utilising Couette and Poiseuil…
The phase behaviour of two-component bottle-brush polymers with fully flexible backbones under poor solvent conditions is studied via molecular-dynamics simulations, using a coarse-grained bead-spring model and side chains of up to $N=40$ effective monomers. We consider a symmetric model where side chains of type A and B are grafted alternately onto a flexible backbone. The aim of this study to explore the phase behaviour of two-component bottle-brushes depending on parameters, such as as the grafting density $σ$, the backbone length $N_b$, the side-chain length $N$, and the temperature $T$. The Self-Consistent Field theory of brushes of neutral water-soluble polymers described by two-state models is formulated in terms of the effective Flory interaction parameter $χ_{eff}(T,ϕ)$ that depends on both temperature, T and the monomer volume fraction, $ϕ$. The concentration profiles, distribution of free ends and compression force profiles are obtained in the presence and in the absence of a vertical phase separation. A vertical phase separation within the layer leads to a distinctive compression force profile and a minimum in the plot of the moments of the concentration profile vs. th…

Polymer brushes are increasingly used to tailor surface physicochemistry for various applications such as wetting, adhesion of biological objects, implantable devices, etc. We perform Dissipative Particle Dynamics simulations to study the behavior of dense polymer brushes under flow in a slit-pore channel. We discover that the system displays flow inversion at the brush interface for several disconnected ranges of the imposed flow. We associate such phenomenon to collective polymer dynamics: a wave propagating on the brush surface. The relation between the wavelength, the amplitude and the pro…
We study the changes in the conformations of brushes upon the addition of crosslinks between the chains using the bond fluctuation model. The Flory-Rehner model applied to uni-axially swollen networks predicts a collapse for large degrees of crosslinking $q$ proportional to $q^{-1/3}$ in disagreement with our simulation data. We show that the height reduction of the brushes is driven by monomer fluctuations in direction perpendicular to the grafting plane and not due to network elasticity. We observe that the impact of crosslinking is different for reactions between monomers of the same or on …
It has recently been proposed that the miscibility of nanoparticles with a polymer matrix can be controlled by grafting polymer chains to the nanoparticle surface. As a first step to study this situation, we have used molecular dynamics simulations on a single nanoparticle of radius R ($4σ\le$R$\le 16σ$, where $σ$ is the diameter of a polymer monomer) grafted with chains of length 500 in a polymer melt of chains of length 1000. The grafting density $Σ$ was varied between $0.04$-$0.32$ chains/$σ^2$. To facilitate equilibration a Monte Carlo double-bridging algorithm is applied - new bonds are f…
We study the influence of chain stiffness on droplet flow in a nano-channel, coated with semiflexible hydrophobic polymers by means of non-equilibrium molecular-dynamics simulations. The studied system is then a moving droplet in the slit channel, coexisting with its vapor and subjected to periodic boundary conditions in the flow direction. The polymer chains, grafted by the terminal bead to the confining walls, are described by a coarse-grained model that accounts for chain connectivity, excluded volume interactions and local chain stiffness. The rheological, frictional and dynamical properti…
A coarse grained model for flexible polymers end-grafted to repulsive spherical nanoparticles is studied for various chain lengths and grafting densities under good solvent conditions, by Molecular Dynamics methods and density functional theory. With increasing chain length the monomer density profile exhibits a crossover to the star polymer limit. The distribution of polymer ends and the linear dimensions of individual polymer chains are obtained, while the inhomogeneous stretching of the chains is characterized by the local persistence lengths. The results on the structure factor of both sin…
The absorption of free linear chains in a polymer brush was studied with respect to chain size $L$ and compatibility $χ$ with the brush by means of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and Density Functional Theory (DFT) / Self-Consistent Field Theory (SCFT) at both moderate, $σ_g = 0.25$, and high, $σ_g = 1.00$, grafting densities using a bead-spring model. Different concentrations of the free chains $0.0625 \le ϕ_o \le 0.375$ are examined. Contrary to the case of $χ= 0$ when all species are almost completely ejected by the polymer brush irrespective of their length $L$, for $χ< 0$ we find that the d…
We consider edge effects in grafted polymer layers under compression. For a semi-infinite brush, the penetration depth of edge effects $ξ\propto h_0(h_0/h)^{1/2}$ is larger than the natural height $h_0$ and the actual height $h$. For a brush of finite lateral size $S$ (width of a stripe or radius of a disk), the lateral extension $u_S$ of the border chains follows the scaling law $u_S = ξϕ(S/ξ)$. The scaling function $ϕ(x)$ is estimated within the framework of a local Flory theory for stripe-shaped grafting surfaces. For small $x$, $ϕ(x)$ decays as a power law in agreement with simple argument…
Environmental fate and toxicity of microplastic particles is dominated by their surface properties. In the environment an adsorbed layer of biomolecules and natural organic matter forms the so-called eco-corona. A quantitative description of how this eco-corona changes the particles' colloidal interactions is still missing. Here, we demonstrate with colloidal probe-atomic force microscopy that the formation of the eco-corona on microplastic particles introduces a soft film on the surface which changes the mechanical behaviour. We measure single particle-particle interactions and find a pronoun…
We investigate the interaction energy between two colloidal particles on or immersed in nonadsorbing polymer brushes grafted onto the substrate as a function of the separation of the particles by use of self-consistent field theory calculation. Depending on the colloidal size and the penetration depth, we demonstrate an existence of repulsive energy barrier of several $k_{B}T$, which can be interpreted by separating the interaction energy into three parts: colloids-polymer interfacial energy, entropic contribution due to ``depletion zone" overlap of colloidal particles, and entropically elasti…
Theories of strongly stretched polymer brushes, particularly the parabolic brush theory, are valuable for providing analytically tractable predictions for the thermodynamic behavior of surface-grafted polymers in a wide range of settings. However, the parabolic brush limit fails to describe polymers grafted to convex, curved substrates, such as the surfaces of spherical nanoparticles or the interfaces of strongly segregated block copolymers. It has been previously shown that strongly-stretched, curved brushes require a boundary layer devoid of free chain ends, requiring modifications of the th…
The interactions between spherical colloids covered with end-grafted polymers (brushes) immersed in a polymer melt are studied theoretically. We show that attractive enthalpic interactions between the two polymer species, characterized by a negative Flory parameter (chi<0), can stabilize the colloidal dispersion. The stabilizing mechanism is a result of a structural change from a dry brush, where the melt chains do not penetrate deeply into the brush, to a wet brush, where the free chains penetrate the brush and force the grafted chains to extend into the melt.
Molecular dynamics simulations of a short-chain polymer melt between two brush-covered surfaces under shear have been performed. The end-grafted polymers which constitute the brush have the same chemical properties as the free chains in the melt and provide a soft deformable substrate. Polymer chains are described by a coarse-grained bead-spring model with Lennard-Jones interactions between the beads and a FENE potential between nearest neighbors along the backbone of the chains. The grafting density of the brush layer offers a way of controlling the behavior of the surface without altering th…
As an example for the interplay of structure, dynamics, and phase behavior of macromolecular systems, this article focuses on the problem of bottle-brush polymers with either rigid or flexible backbones. On a polymer with chain length $N_b$, side-chains with chain length $N$ are endgrafted with grafting density $σ$. Due to the multitude of characteristic length scales and the size of these polymers (typically these cylindrical macromolecules contain of the order of 10000 effective monomeric units) understanding of the structure is a challenge for experiment. But due to excessively large relaxa…
