We investigate the impact of dissipation on the energy balance in the electron dynamics of metal clusters excited by strong electro-magnetic pulses. The dynamics is described theoretically by Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory (TDDFT) at the level of Local Density Approximation (LDA) augmented by a self interaction correction term and a quantum collision term in Relaxation-Time Approximation (RTA). We evaluate the separate contributions to the total excitation energy, namely energy exported by electron emission, potential energy due to changing charge state, intrinsic kinetic and potential energy, and collective flow energy. The balance of these energies is studied as function of the laser parameters (frequency, intensity, pulse length) and as function of system size and charge. We also look at collisions with a highly charged ion and here at the dependence on the impact parameter (close versus distant collisions). Dissipation turns out to be small where direct electron emission prevails namely for laser frequencies above any ionization threshold and for slow electron extraction in distant collisions. Dissipation is large for fast collisions and at low laser frequencies, particularly at resonances.
We investigate the power dissipated by an electronic current flowing through a quantum point contact in a two-dimensional electron gas. Based on the Landauer-Büttiker approach to quantum transport, we evaluate the power that is dissipated on the two sides of the constriction as a function of the Fermi energy, temperature, and applied voltage. We demonstrate that an asymmetry appears in the dissipation, which is most pronounced when the quantum point contact is tuned to a conductance step where the transmission strongly depends on energy. At low temperatures, the asymmetry is enhanced when the …
The timescale of electronic cooling is an important parameter controlling the performance of devices based on quantum materials for optoelectronic, thermoelectric and thermal management applications. In most conventional materials, cooling proceeds via the emission of phonons, a relatively slow process that can bottleneck the carrier relaxation dynamics, thus degrading the device performance. Here we present the theory of near-field radiative heat transfer, that occurs when a two-dimensional electron system is coupled via the non-retarded Coulomb interaction to a three-dimensional bulk that ca…
Efficient heat dissipation to the substrate is crucial for optimal device performance in nanoelectronics. We develop a theory of electronic thermal boundary conductance (TBC) mediated by remote phonon scattering for the single-layer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors MoS$_{2}$ and WS$_{2}$, and model their electronic TBC with different dielectric substrates (SiO$_{2}$, HfO$_{2}$ and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$). Our results indicate that the electronic TBC is strongly dependent on the electron density, suggesting that it can be modulated by the gate electrode in field-effect transistors,…
Electron-phonon coupling in metallic carbon nanotubes: Dispersionless electron propagation despite dissipation
最近的研究[Rosati,Dolcini和Rossi,Appl. Phys. Lett.
We study the hydrodynamic viscous electronic transport in a two-dimensional sample separated into two semi-infinite planes by a one-dimensional infinite barrier. The semi-infinite planes are electrically connected via the finite-size slit in the barrier. We calculate the current through the slit assuming finite voltage drop between the planes and neglecting disorder-induced Ohmic resistance, so that dissipation and resistance are purely viscosity-induced. We find that the only solution to the Stokes equation in this geometry, which yields a finite dissipation at finite resistance (and, hence, …
We theoretically investigate the evolution of the peak height of an energy resolved electronic wave-packets ballistically propagating along integer quantum Hall edge channels at filling factor $ν=2$. This is ultimately related to the elastic scattering amplitude for the fermionic excitations evaluated at different injection energy. We investigate this quantity assuming a short range capacitive coupling between the edges. Moreover, we also take into account phenomenologically the possibility of energy dissipation towards additional degrees of freedom both linear and quadratic in the injection e…
Electronic transport in the regime where carrier-carrier collisions are the dominant scattering mechanism has taken on new relevance with the advent of ultraclean two-dimensional materials. Here we present a combined theoretical and experimental study of ambipolar hydrodynamic transport in bilayer graphene demonstrating that the conductivity is given by the sum of two Drude-like terms that describe relative motion between electrons and holes, and the collective motion of the electron-hole plasma. As predicted, the measured conductivity of gapless, charge-neutral bilayer graphene is sample- and…
We show that torsion resonators can experience massive dissipation dilution due to nanoscale strain, and draw a connection to a century-old theory from the torsion balance community which suggests that a simple torsion ribbon is naturally soft-clamped. By disrupting a commonly held belief in the nanomechanics community, our findings invite a rethinking of strategies towards quantum experiments and precision measurement with nanomechanical resonators. For example, we revisit the optical lever technique for monitoring displacement, and find that the rotation of a strained nanobeam can be resolve…
