The progress made in understanding spontaneous toroidal rotation reversals in tokamaks is reviewed and current ideas to solve this ten-year-old puzzle are explored. The paper includes a summarial synthesis of the experimental observations in AUG, C-Mod, KSTAR, MAST and TCV tokamaks, reasons why turbulent momentum transport is thought to be responsible for the reversals, a review of the theory of turbulent momentum transport and suggestions for future investigations.
Recent MHD simulations find that the reversal of the local resistive interchange parameter $D_R$ from negative to positive due to impurity radiation cooling is able to trigger the resistive tearing mode growth in a tokamak above a threshold in impurity level. A layer of perturbed Pfirsch-Schlüter current density and resistivity are also induced by the impurity radiation, which further govern the tearing mode growth and saturation in the nonlinear stage. The impurity threshold and the tearing mode growth strongly depend on the parallel thermal conductivity, and such a dependence derives from th…
A real-time capable core turbulence tokamak transport model is developed. This model is constructed from the regularized nonlinear regression of quasilinear gyrokinetic transport code output. The regression is performed with a multilayer perceptron neural network. The transport code input for the neural network training set consists of five dimensions, and is limited to adiabatic electrons. The neural network model successfully reproduces transport fluxes predicted by the original quasilinear model, while gaining five orders of magnitude in computation time. The model is implemented in a real-…
For the first time the pellet cycle of a multiple-isotope plasma is successfully reproduced with reduced turbulent transport modelling, within an integrated simulation framework. Future nuclear fusion reactors are likely to be fuelled by cryogenic pellet injection, due to higher penetration and faster response times. Accurate pellet cycle modelling is crucial to assess fuelling efficiency and burn control. In recent JET tokamak experiments, deuterium pellets with reactor-relevant deposition characteristics were injected into a pure hydrogen plasma. Measurements of the isotope ratio profile inf…
Tokamak plasmas rotate even without external injection of momentum. A Doppler backscattering system installed at MAST has allowed this intrinsic rotation to be studied in Ohmic L-mode and H-mode plasmas, including the first observation of intrinsic rotation reversals in a spherical tokamak. Experimental results are compared to a novel 1D model, which captures the collisionality dependence of the radial transport of toroidal angular momentum due to the effect of neoclassical flows on turbulent fluctuations. The model is able to accurately reproduce the change in sign of core toroidal rotation, …
Energetic particles produced by neutral beams are observed to excite energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic modes (EGAMs) in tokamaks. We study the effects of anisotropy of distribution function of the energetic particles on the excitation of such instabilities with ORB5, a gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code. Numerical results are shown for linear electrostatic simulations with ORB5. The growth rate is found to be sensitively dependent on the phase-space shape of the distribution function. The behavior of the instability is qualitatively compared to the theoretical analysis of dispersion r…
Twisted magnetic flux ropes are ubiquitous in space and laboratory plasmas, and the merging of such flux ropes through magnetic reconnection is an important mechanism for restructuring magnetic fields and releasing free magnetic energy. The merging-compression scenario is one possible start up scheme for spherical tokamaks, which has been used on the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak MAST. Two current-carrying plasma rings, or flux ropes, approach each other through the mutual attraction of their like currents, and merge, through magnetic reconnection, into a single plasma torus, with substantial pla…
New analytical expressions for parallel transport coefficients in multicomponent collisional plasmas are presented in this paper. They are improved versions of the expressions written in [V. M. Zhdanov. Transport Processes in Multicomponent Plasma, vol. 44. 10 2002.], based on Grad's 21N-moment method. Both explicit and approximate approaches for transport coefficients calculation are considered. Accurate application of this closure for the Braginskii transport equations is discussed. Viscosity dependence on the heat flux is taken into account. Improved expressions are implemented into the SOL…
Pedestal modelling is crucial to predict the performance of future fusion devices. Current modelling efforts suffer either from a lack of kinetic physics, or an excess of computational complexity. To ameliorate these problems, we take a first-principles multiscale approach to the pedestal. We will present three separate sets of equations, covering the dynamics of Edge Lo- calised Modes, the inter-ELM pedestal, and pedestal turbulence, respectively. Precisely how these equations should be coupled to each other are covered in detail. This framework is completely self-consistent; it is derived fr…

The transition from toroidal counter- to co- rotation in the core plasma has been observed at L to H transition in several tokamaks. Spontaneous reversal has also been observed in TCV beyond a threshold in the density. We develop a model based on the following phenomenology: (1) the increase of the gradient of the pressure triggers formation on a fast time scale of cells of convection (similar to Rayleigh-Benard (RB), but with a single sign of vorticity); (2) poloidal rotation is induced by the envelope of the peripheric velocity of the convection cells; via the baroclinic term the gradients o…
Particle transport due to Ion Temperature Gradient/Trapped Electron (ITG/TE) mode turbulence is investigated using the gyrokinetic code GENE. Both a reduced quasilinear (QL) treatment and nonlinear (NL) simulations are performed for typical tokamak parameters corresponding to ITG dominated turbulence. A selfconsistent treatment is used, where the stationary local profiles are calculated corresponding to zero particle flux simultaneously for electrons and trace impurities. The scaling of the stationary profiles with magnetic shear, safety factor, electron-to-ion temperature ratio, collisionalit…
The results of a comprehensive investigation into the effects of various MHD modes on the NBI-generated fast-ion population in MAST plasmas are reported. Fast-ion redistribution due to low-frequency (20-50 kHz) chirping energetic particle modes known as fishbones, as well as the long-lived internal kink mode, is observed with the Fast-Ion Deuterium Alpha (FIDA) spectrometer and radially-scanning collimated neutron camera. In addition, strongly-driven chirping toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes are observed to cause fast-ion redistribution, as are sawteeth and large edge-localised modes. In …
A geometrical correction to the E x B drift causes an outward flux of cocurrent momentum whenever electrostatic potential energy is transferred to ion parallel flows. The robust symmetry breaking follows from the free energy flow in phase space and does not depend on any assumed linear eigenmode structure, acting both for axisymmetric fluctuations (such as geodesic acoustic modes) as well as more general nonaxisymmetric fluctuations. The resulting rotation peaking is countercurrent and scales as electron temperature over plasma current. This peaking mechanism can only act when fluctuations are…
Toroidal rotation is well known to play significant roles in the edge transport and L-H transition dynamics of tokamaks. Our recent calculation finds that a sufficiently strong localized toroidal rotation can directly bring out the formation of edge pressure pedestal with reversed magnetic shear that is reminiscent of an H-mode plasma, purely through the effects of toroidal rotation on the tokamak MHD equilibrium itself. In particular, the enhanced edge toroidal rotation enables a substantial peaking of the parallel current profile near edge in higher $β$ regimes, which leads to the flattening…
3D free boundary equilibrium computations have recently been used to model external kinks and edge harmonic oscillations (EHOs), comparing with linear MHD stability codes, and nonlinear analytic theory [Kleiner et al, PPCF 61 084005 (2019)]. In this study, results of the VMEC equilibrium code are compared further with nonlinear reduced MHD simulations, using the JOREK code. The purpose of this investigation is to understand the extent to which the modelling approaches agree, and identify the important physical effects which can modify the dynamics. For the simulated external kink, which is dom…
Runaway electrons (REs) can be generated in tokamak plasmas if the accelerating force from the toroidal electric field exceeds the collisional drag force due to Coulomb collisions with the background plasma. In ITER, disruptions are expected to generate REs mainly through knock-on collisions, where enough momentum can be transferred from existing runaways to slow electrons to transport the latter beyond a critical momentum, setting off an avalanche of REs. Since knock-on runaways are usually scattered off with a significant perpendicular component of the momentum with respect to the local magn…
In large hot tokamaks like JET, the width of the reconnecting layer for resistive modes is determined by semi-collisional electron dynamics and is much less than the ion Larmor radius. Firstly a dispersion relation valid in this regime is derived which provides a unified description of drift-tearing modes, kinetic Alfven waves and the internal kink mode at low beta. Tearing mode stability is investigated analytically recovering the stabilising ion orbit effect, obtained previously by Cowley et al. [Phys. Fluids (29) 3230 1986], which implies large values of the tearing mode stability parameter…

Self-consistent modelling and qualitative comparison of mildly relativistic runaway electron dynamics with a closed flux surface formation model during tokamak startup
We present an ultrafast neural network (NN) model, QLKNN, which predicts core tokamak transport heat and particle fluxes. QLKNN is a surrogate model based on a database of 300 million flux calculations of the quasilinear gyrokinetic transport model QuaLiKiz. The database covers a wide range of realistic tokamak core parameters. Physical features such as the existence of a critical gradient for the onset of turbulent transport were integrated into the neural network training methodology. We have coupled QLKNN to the tokamak modelling framework JINTRAC and rapid control-oriented tokamak transpor…
This paper outlines an approach towards improved rigour in tokamak turbulence transport model validation within integrated modelling. Gaussian process regression (GPR) techniques were applied for profile fitting during the preparation of integrated modelling simulations allowing for rigourous sensitivity tests of prescribed initial and boundary conditions as both fit and derivative uncertainties are provided. This was demonstrated by a JETTO integrated modelling simulation of the JET ITER-like-wall H-mode baseline discharge #92436 with the QuaLiKiz quasilinear turbulent transport model, which …
Turbulent transport of trace impurities impurities in the edge and scrape-off-layer of tokamak fusion plasmas is modelled by three dimensional electromagnetic gyrofluid computations including evolution of plasma profile gradients. The source function of impurity ions is dynamically computed from pre-determined measured and calculated electron impact ionization cross section data. The simulations describe the generation and further passive turbulent E-cross-B advection of the impurities by intermittent fluctuations and coherent filamentary structures (blobs) across the scrape-off-layer.
We discuss the role of neoclassical resistivity and local magnetic shear in the triggering of the sawtooth in tokamaks. When collisional detrapping of electrons is considered the value of the safety factor on axis, $q(0,t)$, evolves on a new time scale, $τ_{*}=τ_ην_{*}/(8\sqrtε)$, where $τ_η=4πa^{2}/[c^{2}η(0)]$ is the resistive diffusion time, $ν_{*}=ν_{e}/(ε^{3/2}ω_{te})$ the electron collision frequency normalised to the transit frequency and $ε=a/R_{0}$ the tokamak inverse aspect ratio. Such evolution is characterised by the formation of a structure of size $δ_{*}\simν_{*}^{2/3}a$ around t…
Predicting plasma evolution within a Tokamak is crucial to building a sustainable fusion reactor. Whether in the simulation space or within the experimental domain, the capability to forecast the spatio-temporal evolution of plasma field variables rapidly and accurately could improve active control methods on current tokamak devices and future fusion reactors. In this work, we demonstrate the utility of using Fourier Neural Operator (FNO) to model the plasma evolution in simulations and experiments. Our work shows that the FNO is capable of predicting magnetohydrodynamic models governing the p…

First-principles numerical simulations are used to describe a transport bifurcation in a differentially rotating tokamak plasma. Such a bifurcation is more probable in a region of zero magnetic shear than one of finite magnetic shear because in the former case the component of the sheared toroidal flow that is perpendicular to the magnetic field has the strongest suppressing effect on the turbulence. In the zero-magnetic-shear regime, there are no growing linear eigenmodes at any finite value of flow shear. However, subcritical turbulence can be sustained, owing to the transient growth of mode…
Here we present a new code for modelling electron kinetics in the tokamak Scrape-Off Layer (SOL). SOL-KiT (Scrape-Off Layer Kinetic Transport) is a fully implicit 1D code with kinetic (or fluid) electrons, fluid (or stationary) ions, and diffusive neutrals. The code is designed for fundamental exploration of non-local physics in the SOL and utilizes an arbitrary degree Legendre polynomial decomposition of the electron distribution function, treating both electron-ion and electron-atom collisions. We present a novel method for ensuring particle and energy conservation in inelastic and superelas…
Upgraded spectroscopic hardware and an improved impurity concentration calculation allow accurate determination of boron density in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. A database of boron measurements is compared to quasilinear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations including Coriolis and centrifugal rotational effects over a range of H-mode plasma regimes. The peaking of the measured boron profiles shows a strong anti-correlation with the plasma rotation gradient, via a relationship explained and reproduced by the theory. It is demonstrated that the rotodiffusive impurity flux driven by the rotation gr…
Relativistic runaway electrons are a major concern in tokamaks. The European framework for Integrated Modelling (EU-IM), facilitates the integration of different plasma simulation tools by providing a standard data structure for communication that enables relatively easy integration of different physics codes. A three-level modelling approach was adopted for runaway electron simulations within the EU-IM. Recently, a number of runaway electron modelling modules have been integrated into this framework. The first level of modelling (Runaway Indicator) is limited to the indication if runaway elec…
Neoclassical and turbulent heavy impurity transport in tokamak core plasmas are determined by main ion temperature, density and toroidal rotation profiles. Thus, in order to understand and prevent experimental behaviour of W accumulation, flux-driven integrated modelling of main ion heat and particle transport over multiple confinement times is a vital prerequisite. For the first time, the quasilinear gyrokinetic code QuaLiKiz has been applied for successful predictions of core kinetic profiles in an ASDEX Upgrade H-mode discharge in the turbulence dominated region within the integrated modell…
Within integrated tokamak plasma modelling, turbulent transport codes are typically the computational bottleneck limiting their routine use outside of post-discharge analysis. Neural network (NN) surrogates have been used to accelerate these calculations while retaining the desired accuracy of the physics-based models. This paper extends a previous NN model, known as QLKNN-hyper-10D, by incorporating the impact of impurities, plasma rotation and magnetic equilibrium effects. This is achieved by adding a light impurity fractional density ($n_{imp,light} / n_e$) and its normalized gradient, the …

Quasilinear turbulent transport models are a successful tool for prediction of core tokamak plasma profiles in many regimes. Their success hinges on the reproduction of local nonlinear gyrokinetic fluxes. We focus on significant progress in the quasilinear gyrokinetic transport model QuaLiKiz [C. Bourdelle et al. 2016 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 58 014036], which employs an approximated solution of the mode structures to significantly speed up computation time compared to full linear gyrokinetic solvers. Optimization of the dispersion relation solution algorithm within integrated modelling ap…

Edge plasma turbulence is critical to the performance of magnetic confinement fusion devices. Towards better understanding edge turbulence in both theory and experiment, a custom-built physics-informed deep learning framework constrained by partial differential equations is developed to accurately learn turbulent fields consistent with the two-fluid theory from partial observations of electron pressure. This calculation is not otherwise possible using conventional equilibrium models. With this technique, the first direct quantitative comparisons of turbulent fields between electrostatic two-fl…
