In this work, we propose two-level space-time domain decomposition preconditioners for parabolic problems discretized using finite elements. They are motivated as an extension to space-time of balancing domain decomposition by constraints preconditioners. The key ingredients to be defined are the sub-assembled space and operator, the coarse degrees of freedom (DOFs) in which we want to enforce continuity among subdomains at the preconditioner level, and the transfer operator from the sub-assembled to the original finite element space. With regard to the sub-assembled operator, a perturbation of the time derivative is needed to end up with a well-posed preconditioner. The set of coarse DOFs includes the time average (at the space-time subdomain) of classical space constraints plus new constraints between consecutive subdomains in time. Numerical experiments show that the proposed schemes are weakly scalable in time, i.e., we can efficiently exploit increasing computational resources to solve more time steps in the same {total elapsed} time. Further, the scheme is also weakly space-time scalable, since it leads to asymptotically constant iterations when solving larger problems both in space and time. Excellent {wall clock} time weak scalability is achieved for space-time parallel solvers on some thousands of cores.
A balancing domain decomposition by constraints preconditioner for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin discretization of an elliptic optimal control problem
A simple variant of the BDDC preconditioner in which constraints are imposed on a selected set of subobjects (subdomain subedges, subfaces and vertices between pairs of subedges) is presented. We are able to show that the condition number of the preconditioner is bounded by $C \big(1+\log (L/h)\big)^2$, where $C$ is a constant, and $h$ and $L$ are the characteristic sizes of the mesh and the subobjects, respectively. As $L$ can be chosen almost freely, the condition number can theoretically be as small as $O(1)$. We will discuss the pros and cons of the preconditioner and its application to he…
Local Fourier analysis is a commonly used tool for the analysis of multigrid and other multilevel algorithms, providing both insight into observed convergence rates and predictive analysis of the performance of many algorithms. In this paper, for the first time, we adapt local Fourier analysis to examine variants of two- and three-level balancing domain decomposition by constraints (BDDC) algorithms, to better understand the eigenvalue distributions and condition number bounds on these preconditioned operators. This adaptation is based on a modified choice of basis for the space of Fourier har…
Parallel implementations of linear iterative solvers generally alternate between phases of data exchange and phases of local computation. Increasingly large problem sizes on more heterogeneous systems make load balancing and network layout very challenging tasks. In particular, global communication patterns such as inner products become increasingly limiting at scale. We explore the use of asynchronous communication based on one-sided MPI primitives in a multitude of domain decomposition solvers. In particular, a scalable asynchronous two-level method is presented. We discuss practical issues …
The aim in model order reduction is to approximate an input-output map described by a large-scale dynamical system with a low-dimensional and cheaper-to-evaluate reduced order model. While high fidelity can be achieved by a variety of methods, only a few of them allow for rigorous error control. In this paper, we propose a rigorous error bound for the reduction of linear systems with balancing-related reduction methods. More specifically, we consider the simulation over a finite time interval and provide an a posteriori adaption of the standard a priori bound for Balanced Truncation and Balanc…
Stability and convergence analysis for the domain decomposition finite element/finite difference (FE/FD) method is presented. The analysis is designed for semi-discrete finite element scheme for the time-dependent Maxwell's equations. The explicit finite element schemes in different settings of the spatial domain are constructed and domain decomposition algorithm is formulated. Several numerical examples validate convergence rates obtained in the theoretical studies.
We prove consistence, convergence and stability of the Domain Decomposition in space and time method of 4DVAR Data Assimilation problem. We introduce the condition number of the problem and validate the theoretical analysis through numerical results
A fast method is presented for adaptive moving mesh generation in multi-dimensions using a domain decomposition parabolic Monge-Ampère approach. The domain decomposition procedure employed here is non-iterative and involves splitting the computational domain into overlapping subdomains. An adaptive mesh on each subdomain is then computed as the image of the solution of the $L^2$ optimal mass transfer problem using a parabolic Monge-Ampère method. The domain decomposition approach allows straightforward implementation for the parallel computation of adaptive meshes which helps to reduce computa…
We study a natural alternating method of Schwarz type (domain decomposition) for certain class of couplings between local and nonlocal operators. We show that our method fits into Lion's framework and prove, as a consequence, convergence in both, the continuous and the discrete settings.
In this paper we consider Schwarz domain decomposition applied to the generation of 2D spatial meshes by a local equidistribution principle. We briefly review the derivation of the local equidistribution principle and the appropriate choice of boundary conditions. We then introduce classical and optimized Schwarz domain decomposition methods to solve the resulting system of nonlinear equations. The implementation of these iterations are discussed, and we conclude with numerical examples to illustrate the performance of the approach.
In this work we use algebraic dual representations in conjunction with domain decomposition methods for Darcy equations. We define the broken Sobolev spaces and their finite dimensional counterparts. In addition, a global trace space is defined that connects the solution between the broken spaces. Use of dual representations results in a sparse metric free representation of the constraint on divergence of velocity, the pressure gradient term and on the continuity constraint across the sub domains. To demonstrate this, we solve two test cases: i) manufactured solution case, and ii) industrial b…
In this paper, we propose two novel Robin-type domain decomposition methods based on the two-grid techniques for the coupled Stokes-Darcy system. Our schemes firstly adopt the existing Robin-type domain decomposition algorithm to obtain the coarse grid approximate solutions. Then two modified domain decomposition methods are further constructed on the fine grid by utilizing the framework of two-grid methods to enhance computational efficiency, via replacing some interface terms by the coarse grid information. The natural idea of using the two-grid frame to optimize the domain decomposition met…
We propose V--cycle multigrid methods for vector field problems arising from the lowest order hexahedral Nédélec finite element. Since the conventional scalar smoothing techniques do not work well for the problems, a new type of smoothing method is necessary. We introduce new smoothers based on substructuring with nonoverlapping domain decomposition methods. We provide the convergence analysis and numerical experiments that support our theory.
We study the Schwarz overlapping domain decomposition method applied to the Poisson problem on a special family of domains, which by construction consist of a union of a large number of fixed-size subdomains. These domains are motivated by applications in computational chemistry where the subdomains consist of van der Waals balls. As is usual in the theory of domain decomposition methods, the rate of convergence of the Schwarz method is related to a stable subspace decomposition. We derive such a stable decomposition for this family of domains and analyze how the stability "constant" depends o…
Domain decomposition methods are widely used for the numerical solution of partial differential equations on high performance computers. We develop an adjoint-based a posteriori error analysis for both multiplicative and additive overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition methods. The numerical error in a user-specified functional of the solution (quantity of interest) is decomposed into contributions that arise as a result of the finite iteration between the subdomains and from the spatial discretization. The spatial discretization contribution is further decomposed into contributions arising f…
In this paper we present a Fourier feature based deep domain decomposition method (F-D3M) for partial differential equations (PDEs). Currently, deep neural network based methods are actively developed for solving PDEs, but their efficiency can degenerate for problems with high frequency modes. In this new F-D3M strategy, overlapping domain decomposition is conducted for the spatial domain, such that high frequency modes can be reduced to relatively low frequency ones. In each local subdomain, multi Fourier feature networks (MFFNets) are constructed, where efficient boundary and interface treat…
We propose domain decomposition preconditioners for the solution of an integral equation formulation of forward and inverse acoustic scattering problems with point scatterers. We study both forward and inverse problems and propose preconditioning techniques to accelerate the iterative solvers. For the forward scattering problem, we extend the domain decomposition based preconditioning techniques presented for partial differential equations in {\em "A restricted additive Schwarz preconditioner for general sparse linear systems", SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 21 (1999), pp. 792--797}, to…
A new domain decomposition method for Maxwell's equations in conductive media is presented. Using this method reconstruction algorithms are developed for determination of dielectric permittivity function using time-dependent scattered data of electric field. All reconstruction algorithms are based on optimization approach to find stationary point of the Lagrangian. Adaptive reconstruction algorithms and space mesh refinement indicators are also presented. Our computational tests show qualitative reconstruction of dielectric permittivity function using anatomically realistic breast phantom.
This paper presents a numerical study on multigrid algorithms of $V$-cycle type for problems posed in the Hilbert space $H(\mathbf{curl})$ in three dimensions. The multigrid methods are designed for discrete problems originated from the discretization using the hexahedral Nédélec edge element of the lowest-order. Our suggested methods are associated with smoothers constructed by substructuring based on domain decomposition methods of nonoverlapping type. Numerical experiments to demonstrate the robustness and the effectiveness of the suggested algorithms are also provided.
In this paper, we propose a novel overlapping domain decomposition method that can be applied to various problems in variational imaging such as total variation minimization. Most of recent domain decomposition methods for total variation minimization adopt the Fenchel--Rockafellar duality, whereas the proposed method is based on the primal formulation. Thus, the proposed method can be applied not only to total variation minimization but also to those with complex dual problems such as higher order models. In the proposed method, an equivalent formulation of the model problem with parallel str…
In this paper, we consider a primal-dual domain decomposition method for total variation regularized problems appearing in mathematical image processing. The model problem is transformed into an equivalent constrained minimization problem by tearing-and-interconnecting domain decomposition. Then, the continuity constraints on the subdomain interfaces are treated by introducing Lagrange multipliers. The resulting saddle point problem is solved by the first order primal-dual algorithm. We apply the proposed method to image denoising, inpainting, and segmentation problems with either $L^2$-fideli…
We build and analyze Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraint (BDDC) and Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting Dual Primal (FETI-DP) preconditioners for elliptic problems discretized by the virtual element method (VEM). We prove polylogarithmic condition number bounds, independent of the number of subdomains, the mesh size, and jumps in the diffusion coefficients. Numerical experiments confirm the theory.
An iterative coupling algorithm based on restricted additive Schwarz domain decomposition is investigated to co-simulate electrical circuits with hybrid electromagnetic (EMT) and transient stability (TS) modeled using dynamic phasors. This co-simulation algorithm does not introduce any delay between the data exchanged at the co-simulation step. The pure linear convergence property of the iterative method allows it to be accelerated towards the true solution by a non-intrusive Aitken's acceleration of the convergence post-processing, even if the domain decomposition interface conditions make th…

A rigorous mathematical framework is provided for a substructuring-based domain-decomposition approach for nonlocal problems that feature interactions between points separated by a finite distance. Here, by substructuring it is meant that a traditional geometric configuration for local partial differential equation problems is used in which a computational domain is subdivided into non-overlapping subdomains. In the nonlocal setting, this approach is substructuring-based in the sense that those subdomains interact with neighboring domains over interface regions having finite volume, in contras…

Domain decomposition methods are widely used and effective in the approximation of solutions to partial differential equations. Yet the optimal construction of these methods requires tedious analysis and is often available only in simplified, structured-grid settings, limiting their use for more complex problems. In this work, we generalize optimized Schwarz domain decomposition methods to unstructured-grid problems, using Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCNNs) and unsupervised learning to learn optimal modifications at subdomain interfaces. A key ingredient in our approach is an improved…
