In this work we design a new domain decomposition method for the Euler equations in 2 dimensions. The basis is the equivalence via the Smith factorization with a third order scalar equation to whom we can apply an algorithm inspired from the Robin-Robin preconditioner for the convection-diffusion equation. Afterwards we translate it into an algorithm for the initial system and prove that at the continuous level and for a decomposition into 2 sub-domains, it converges in 2 iterations. This property cannot be preserved strictly at discrete level and for arbitrary domain decompositions but we still have numerical results which confirm a very good stability with respect to the various parameters of the problem (mesh size, Mach number, ....).
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations require the positivity of thermodynamic quantities in order to guarantee their well-posedness. In this work, we introduce a positivity limiting strategy for entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin discretizations constructed by blending high order solutions with a low order positivity-preserving discretization. The proposed low order discretization is semi-discretely entropy stable, and the proposed limiting strategy is positivity preserving for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes…
Recently developed concept of dissipative measure-valued solution for compressible flows is a suitable tool to describe oscillations and singularities possibly developed in solutions of multidimensional Euler equations. In this paper we study the convergence of the first-order finite volume method based on the exact Riemann solver for the complete compressible Euler equations. Specifically, we derive entropy inequality and prove the consistency of numerical method. Passing to the limit, we show the weak and strong convergence of numerical solutions and identify their limit. The numerical resul…
The state space for solutions of the compressible Euler equations with a general equation of state is examined. An arbitrary equation of state is allowed, subject only to the physical requirements of thermodynamics. An invariant region of the resulting Euler system is identified and the convexity property of this region is justified by using only very minimal thermodynamical assumptions. Finally, we show how an invariant-region-preserving (IRP) limiter can be constructed for use in high order finite-volume type schemes to solve the compressible Euler equations with a general constitutive relat…
We present new discretisation of the moist compressible Euler equations, using the compatible finite element framework identified in Cotter and Shipton (2012). The discretisation strategy is described and details of the parametrisations of moist processes are presented. A procedure for establishing hydrostatic balance for moist atmospheres is introduced, and the model's performance is demonstrated through several test cases, two of which are new.
Entropy-conserving numerical fluxes are a cornerstone of modern high-order entropy-dissipative discretizations of conservation laws. In addition to entropy conservation, other structural properties mimicking the continuous level such as pressure equilibrium and kinetic energy preservation are important. This note proves that there are no numerical fluxes conserving (one of) Harten's entropies for the compressible Euler equations that also preserve pressure equilibria and have a density flux independent of the pressure. This is in contrast to fluxes based on the physical entropy, where even kin…
In this work, we prove the convergence of residual distribution schemes to dissipative weak solutions of the Euler equations. We need to guarantee that the residual distribution schemes are fulfilling the underlying structure preserving properties such as positivity of density and internal energy. Consequently, the residual distribution schemes lead to a consistent and stable approximation of the Euler equations. Our result can be seen as a generalization of the Lax-Richtmyer equivalence theorem to nonlinear problems that consistency plus stability is equivalent to convergence.
We propose two novel two-state approximate Riemann solvers for the compressible Euler equations which are provably entropy dissipative and suitable for the simulation of low Mach numbers. What is new, is that one of our two methods in addition is provably kinetic energy stable. Both methods are based on the entropy satisfying and kinetic energy consistent methods of Chandrashekar (2013). The low Mach number compliance is achieved by rescaling some speed of sound terms in the diffusion matrix in the spirit of Li & Gu (2008). In numerical tests we demonstrate the low Mach number compliance and t…
This work is in the field of multi-material compressible fluid flows simulation. The proposed scheme is eulerian and related to finite volumes methods, but in a Lagrange-Remap formalism on regular orthogonal meshes. The Lagrangian scheme is staggered and the remap phase is similar to a finite volume advection scheme. The multi-material extension uses classical VOF fluxes for sharp interface reconstruction. The originality of the scheme is in the attempt for a 9 points remap scheme without directional splitting. This strategy should allow to preserve good properties of classical multi-material …
This paper is concerned with the approximation of the compressible Euler equations supplemented with an arbitrary or tabulated equation of state. The proposed approximation technique is robust, formally second-order accurate in space, invariant-domain preserving, and works for every equation of state, tabulated or analytic, provided the pressure is nonnegative. An entropy surrogate functional that grows across shocks is proposed. The numerical method is verified with novel analytical solutions and then validated with several computational benchmarks seen in the literature.
In this paper, we analyze a semi-discrete finite volume scheme for the three-dimensional barotropic compressible Euler equations driven by a multiplicative Brownian noise. We derive necessary a priori estimates for numerical approximations, and show that the Young measure generated by the numerical approximations converge to a dissipative measure--valued martingale solution to the stochastic compressible Euler system. These solutions are probabilistically weak in the sense that the driving noise and associated filtration are integral part of the solution. Moreover, we demonstrate strong conver…
We discuss the efficient implementation of a high-performance second-order collocation-type finite-element scheme for solving the compressible Euler equations of gas dynamics on unstructured meshes. The solver is based on the convex limiting technique introduced by Guermond et al. (SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 40, A3211-A3239, 2018). As such it is invariant-domain preserving, i.e., the solver maintains important physical invariants and is guaranteed to be stable without the use of ad-hoc tuning parameters. This stability comes at the expense of a significantly more involved algorithmic structure that …
Recently, relaxation methods have been developed to guarantee the preservation of a single global functional of the solution of an ordinary differential equation. Here, we generalize this approach to guarantee local entropy inequalities for finitely many convex functionals (entropies) and apply the resulting methods to the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Based on the unstructured $hp$-adaptive SSDC framework of entropy conservative or dissipative semidiscretizations using summation-by-parts and simultaneous-approximation-term operators, we develop the first discretizations for …
