The method of characteristics is a classical method for gaining understanding in the solution of a partial differential equation. It has recently been applied to the adjoint equations of the 2D Euler equations and the first goal of this paper is to present a linear algebra analysis that greatly simplifies the discussion of the number of independant characteristic equations satisfied along a family of characteristic curves. This method may be applied for both the direct and the adjoint problem and our second goal is to directly derive in conservative variables the characteristic equations of 2D compressible inviscid flows. Finally, the theoretical results are assessed for a nozzle flow with a classical scheme and its dual consistent discrete adjoint.
We present new discretisation of the moist compressible Euler equations, using the compatible finite element framework identified in Cotter and Shipton (2012). The discretisation strategy is described and details of the parametrisations of moist processes are presented. A procedure for establishing hydrostatic balance for moist atmospheres is introduced, and the model's performance is demonstrated through several test cases, two of which are new.
Recently, relaxation methods have been developed to guarantee the preservation of a single global functional of the solution of an ordinary differential equation. Here, we generalize this approach to guarantee local entropy inequalities for finitely many convex functionals (entropies) and apply the resulting methods to the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. Based on the unstructured $hp$-adaptive SSDC framework of entropy conservative or dissipative semidiscretizations using summation-by-parts and simultaneous-approximation-term operators, we develop the first discretizations for …
We prove the existence of a unique local strong solution to the stochastic compressible Euler system with nonlinear multiplicative noise. This solution exists up to a positive stopping time and is strong in both the PDE and probabilistic sense. Based on this existence result, we study the inviscid limit of the stochastic compressible Navier--Stokes system. As the viscosity tends to zero, any sequence of finite energy weak martingale solutions converges to the compressible Euler system.
We proposed rigorous definitions of Radon measure solutions for boundary value problems of steady compressible Euler equations which modeling hypersonic-limit inviscid flows passing two-dimensional ramps, and their interactions with still gas and pressureless jets. We proved the Newton-Busemann pressure law of drags of body in hypersonic flow, and constructed various physically interesting measure solutions with density containing Dirac measures supported on curves, also exhibited examples of blow up of certain measure solutions. This established a mathematical foundation for applications in e…
Kuzmin-Oseledets formulations of compressible Euler equations case are considered. Exact results and physical interpretations are given. One such exact result for the compressible barotropic case is the potential helicity Lagrange invariant. In recognition of the fundamental physical implications of this Lagrange invariant clarified here, this invariant is shown to hold for compressible non-barotropic cases as well upon using a stronger gauge condition. Symmetry restoration taking place at the Lagrangian level in the Kuzmin-Oseledets formulation is pointed out. The Kuzmin-Oseledets formulation…
In this article, a suite of physically inconsistent properties of the Navier-Stokes equations, associated with the lack of mass diffusion and the definition of velocity, are presented. We show that these inconsistencies are consequences of the Lagrangian derivation that models viscous stresses rather than diffusion. A new model for compressible and diffusive (viscous and heat conducting) flows of an ideal gas, is derived in a purely Eulerian framework. We propose that these equations supersede the Navier-Stokes equations. A few numerical experiments demonstrate some differences and similaritie…
A novel adjoint-based framework oriented to optimal flow control in compressible direct numerical simulations is presented. Also, a new formulation of the adjoint characteristic boundary conditions is introduced, which enhances the stability of the adjoint simulations. The flow configuration chosen as a case study consists of a two dimensional open cavity flow with aspect ratio $L/H=3$ and Reynolds number $Re=5000$. This flow configuration is of particular interest, as the turbulent and chaotic nature of separated flows pushes the adjoint approach to its limit. The target of the flow actuation…
This paper presents the vortical and self-similar solutions for 2D compressible Euler equations using the separation method. These solutions complement Makino's solutions in radial symmetry without rotation. The rotational solutions provide new information that furthers our understanding of ocean vortices and reference examples for numerical methods. In addition, the corresponding blowup, time-periodic or global existence conditions are classified through an analysis of the new Emden equation. A conjecture regarding rotational solutions in 3D is also made.
We prove that bounded weak solutions of the compressible Euler equations will conserve thermodynamic entropy unless the solution fields have sufficiently low space-time Besov regularity. A quantity measuring kinetic energy cascade will also vanish for such Euler solutions, unless the same singularity conditions are satisfied. It is shown furthermore that strong limits of solutions of compressible Navier-Stokes equations that are bounded and exhibit anomalous dissipation are weak Euler solutions. These inviscid limit solutions have non-negative anomalous entropy production and kinetic energy di…
We consider the classical compressible Euler's Equations in three space dimensions with an arbitrary equation of state, and whose initial data corresponds to a constant state outside a sphere. Under suitable restriction on the size of the initial departure from the constant state, we establish theorems which give a complete description of the maximal development. In particular, the boundary of the domain of the maximal solution contains a singular part where the inverse density of the wave fronts vanishes and the shocks form. We obtain a detailed description of the geometry of this singular bo…
We formulated a problem on hypersonic limit of two-dimensional steady non-isentropic compressible Euler flows passing a straight wedge. It turns out that Mach number of the upcoming uniform supersonic flow increases to infinite may be taken as the adiabatic exponent $γ$ of the polytropic gas decreases to $1$. We proposed a form of the Euler equations which is valid if the unknowns are measures and constructed a measure solution contains Dirac measures supported on the surface of the wedge. It is proved that as $γ\to1$, the sequence of solutions of the compressible Euler equations that containi…
This paper addresses the construction and the stability of self-similar solutions to the isentropic compressible Euler equations. These solutions model a gas that implodes isotropically, ending in a singularity formation in finite time. The existence of smooth solutions that vanish at infinity and do not have vacuum regions was recently proved and, in this paper, we provide the first construction of such smooth profiles, the first characterization of their spectrum of radial perturbations as well as some endpoints of unstable directions. Numerical simulations of the Euler equations provide evi…
We study high Mach number limit of the one dimensional piston problem for the full compressible Euler equations of polytropic gas, for both cases that the piston rushes into or recedes from the uniform still gas, at a constant speed. There are two different situations, and one needs to consider measure solutions of the Euler equations to deal with concentration of mass on the piston, or formation of vacuum. We formulate the piston problem in the framework of Radon measure solutions, and show its consistency by proving that the integral weak solutions of the piston problems converge weakly in t…
We are concerned with the one-dimensional piston problem for the compressible Euler equations of Chaplygin gas. If the piston moves at constant subsonic speed to the uniform gas, there exists an integral weak solution for the piston problem, consisting of a shock separating constant states ahead of the piston. While if the speed of the piston is sonic or supersonic, a singular measure solution, with density containing a Dirac measure supported on the piston, shall be introduced to solve the problem. Integral weak solution exists for the piston receding from the gas with any constant speed, and…
