We calculate non-perturbatively the coefficient c_sw required for O(a) improvement of the SU(3) gauge theory with Nf = 2 fermions in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation. For the calculations we impose the standard improvement condition in the Schrödinger functional framework, using two different discretisations for the gauge field i.e. the Wilson plaquette action and the tree-level improved Symanzik (Lüscher-Weisz) action.
We study non-perturbative improvement in SU(3) lattice gauge theory coupled to fermions in the fundamental and two-index symmetric representations. Our lattice action is defined with hypercubic smeared links incorporated into the Wilson-clover fermion kernel. Using standard Schroedinger-functional techniques we estimate the clover coefficient Csw and find that discretization errors are much smaller than in thin-link theories.
The SU(3) gauge theory with fermions in the sextet representation is one of several theories of interest for technicolor models. We have carried out a Schrodinger functional (SF) calculation for the lattice theory with two flavors of Wilson fermions. We find that the discrete beta function changes sign when the SF renormalized coupling is in the neighborhood of g^2 = 2.0, showing a breakdown of the perturbative picture even though the coupling is weak. The most straightforward interpretation is an infrared-stable fixed point.
SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f = 2 fermions in the sextet representation is a promising candidate for a technicolor inspired Standard Model extension. In this note the progress in the past few years aimed at understanding the non-perturbative properties of the model is reviewed. The main difficulties lying ahead in order to make robust conclusions from lattice simulations are outlined.
The Electroweak interactions of a strongly coupled gauge theory are discussed with outlook beyond the Standard Model (BSM) under global and gauge anomaly constraints. The theory is built on a minimal massless fermion doublet of the SU(2) BSM flavor group (bsm-flavor) with a confining gauge force at the TeV scale in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the BSM SU(3) color gauge group (bsm-color). The intriguing possibility of near-conformal sextet gauge dynamics could lead to the minimal realization of the composite Higgs mechanism with a light $0^{++}$ scalar, far separated from …
We present a non-perturbative lattice study of SU(4) gauge theory with two flavors of fermions in the fundamental representation and two in the two-index antisymmetric representation: a theory closely related to a minimal partial-compositeness model for physics beyond the Standard Model, that was proposed by G. Ferretti. We discuss the phase structure of the lattice theory and report results for various observables of interest, including the masses of states obtained from different combinations of valence fermions and the spectrum of the Dirac operator. Finally, we comment on the extension of …
We present updated results for the non-perturbative $β$-function of SU(3) gauge theories with $N_f = 12$ or 10 massless flavors in the fundamental rep or $N_f = 2$ in the sextet rep, measured with staggered fermions. New data at finer lattice spacing and our previously introduced method, the infinitesimal $β$-function, strengthen the case that the $N_f = 12$ model has no infrared fixed point up to $g^2 = 7.2$. We show how underestimated cutoff dependence in one domain wall study for $N_f = 10$ has been corrected, which is now consistent with staggered results showing a monotonically increasing…

We discuss non-perturbative improvement of the vector current, using the Schroedinger Functional formalism. By considering a suitable Ward identity, we compute the improvement coefficient which gives the O(a) mixing of the tensor current with the vector one.
The coefficient of the O(a)-improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action for Wilson fermions are perturbatively determined at one-loop level and estimated at two-loop level.
We describe how the improvement of quark bilinears generalizes from quenched to unquenched QCD, and discuss which of the additional improvement constants can be determined using Ward Identities.
We present a perturbative calculation of the improvement coefficients of SU(2) gauge theory with adjoint representation Wilson-clover fermions and using Schrodinger functional boundary conditions. The computation of the boundary improvement terms is necessary for the full O(a) improvement. With two flavours of adjoint representation fermions this theory is called Minimal Walking Technicolor model.
We compute several coefficients needed for O(a) improvement of currents in perturbation theory, using the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie prescription for choosing an optimal scale q*. We then compare the results to non-perturbative calculations. Normalization factors of the vector and axial vector currents show good agreement, especially when allowing for small two-loop effects. On the other hand, there are large discrepancies in the coefficients of O(a) improvement terms. We suspect that they arise primarily from power corrections inherent in the non-perturbative methods.
We perform a non-perturbative determination of the improvement coefficient c_A to remove O(a) discretization errors in the axial vector current in three-flavor lattice QCD with the Iwasaki gauge action and the standard O$(a)$-improved Wilson quark action. An improvement condition with a good sensitivity to c_A is imposed at constant physics. Combining our results with the perturbative expansion, c_A is now known rather precisely for 1/a \gtrsim 1.6 GeV.
A non-perturbative determination of the axial current improvement coefficient cA is performed with two flavors of dynamical improved Wilson fermions and plaquette gauge action. The improvement condition is formulated with Schroedinger functional boundary conditions and enforced at constant physical volume. Large sensitivity is obtained by using two different pseudo-scalar states in the PCAC relation. We estimate the resulting correction to F_PS at beta=5.2 to be around 10%.
We summarize our recent work on gauge theories with two flavors of fermions in the two-index symmetric representation: SU(2) gauge theory with adjoint fermions, SU(3) with sextets, and SU(4) with ten-dimensional-representation fermions. All three systems have beta functions smaller than their perturbative value, approaching a fixed point near the expected two-loop zero. In all cases the mass anomalous dimension is small, under 0.5.
We perturbatively determine O($a$) boundary improvement coefficients at 1-loop for the Schrödinger Functional coupling with improved gauge actions. These coefficients are required to implement the 1-loop O($a$) improvement in full QCD simulations for the coupling with the improved gauge actions. To this order, lattice artifacts of the step scaling function (SSF) for each improved gauge action are also investigated. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of the 1-loop O($a$) improvement to the SSF in numerical simulations of the pure SU(3) gauge theory.
Using Schroedinger functional techniques, we determine the coefficient of the clover term necessary for non-perturbative O(a) improvement of hypercubic smeared Wilson fermions on a quenched plaquette action background. Unlike for unsmeared Wilson fermions, the resulting clover coefficients are close to the tree-level value even at coarse lattice spacings, indicating the absence of large cutoff effects. A number of exploratory tests are also performed with the improved action.
We carry out the renormalization and the Symanzik O(a)-improvement programme for the static vector current in quenched lattice QCD. The scale independent ratio of the renormalization constants of the static vector and axial currents is obtained non-perturbatively from an axial Ward identity with Wilson-type light quarks and various lattice discretizations of the static action. The improvement coefficients cVstat and bVstat are obtained up to O(g_0^4)-terms by enforcing improvement conditions respectively on the axial Ward identity and a three-point correlator of the static vector current. A co…
We calculate the O(g^2 a) mixing coefficients of bilinear quark operators in lattice QCD using a standard perturbative evaluation of on-shell Green's functions. Our results for the plaquette gluon action are in agreement with those previously obtained with the Schrödinger functional method. The coefficients are also calculated for a class of improved gluon actions having six-link terms.
After describing the Schrödinger functional for standard and improved gluon and quark actions we present results for the non-perturbative clover coefficients of the SW quark action coupled to the Wilson plaquette action for $β\geq 5.7$, as well as the Lüscher-Weisz one-loop tadpole improved gauge action, both in the quenched approximation.
We describe the first steps in the extension of the Symanzik O($a$) improvement program for Wilson-type quark actions to anisotropic lattices, with a temporal lattice spacing smaller than the spatial one. This provides a fully relativistic and computationally efficient framework for the study of heavy quarks. We illustrate our method with accurate results for the quenched charmonium spectrum.
For the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover (SLiNC) action we determine in one-loop lattice perturbation theory the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$ and the clover parameter $c_{SW}$ which is needed for $\mathcal{O}(a)$ improvement. Performing this calculation off-shell we are also able to compute the non gauge invariant quark field improvement coefficient $c_{NGI}$. Additionally, we present first results for the renormalization factors of the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial vector currents. We discuss mean field improvement for the SLiNC action.
We determine quark mass dependent order $a$ improvement terms of the form $b_Jam$ for non-singlet scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector currents using correlators in coordinate space on a set of CLS ensembles. These have been generated employing non-perturbatively improved Wilson Fermions and the tree-level Lüscher-Weisz gauge action at $β= 3.4, 3.46, 3.55$ and $3.7$, corresponding to lattice spacings ranging from $a \approx 0.085$ fm down to $0.05$ fm. In the $N_f=2+1$ flavour theory two types of improvement coefficients exist: $b_J$, proportional to non-singlet quark mass combinations…
Lattice simulations on SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories with matter fields in the fundamental, adjoint and two index symmetric representations are needed to determine if these theories are near or within the conformal window as required for their applications in beyond standard model phenomenology. Simulations with Wilson fermion action are subject to artifacts linear in the lattice spacing $a$, and must be improved. We provide the necessary coefficients for perturbative improvement of the boundary terms when using Schrodinger functional boundary conditions and furthermore show that correctly im…
The coefficients multiplying the counterterms required for O($a$) improvement of the action and the isovector axial current in lattice QCD are computed non-perturbatively, in the quenched approximation and for bare gauge couplings $g_0$ in the range $0 \leq g_0 \leq 1$. A finite-size method based on the Schrödinger functional is employed, which enables us to perform all calculations at zero or nearly zero quark mass. As a by-product the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$ is obtained at all couplings considered.
Many observables of interest in lattice QCD are extracted from correlation functions involving the vector current. If Wilson fermions are used, it is therefore of practical importance that, besides the action, the current be O($a$) improved in order to remove the leading discretization errors from the observables. Here we introduce and apply a new method to determine the improvement coefficient for the two most widely used discretizations of the current.
We propose a method to improve lattice operators composed of Wilson fermions which allows the removal of all corrections of $O(a)$, including those proportional to the quark mass. It requires off-shell improvement of quark fields and composite operators, which is achieved by studying the behaviour of quark and gluon correlation functions at large momenta.
We study possibility of improving staggered fermions using various fat links in order to reduce perturbative corrections to the gauge-invariant staggered fermion operators. We prove five theorems on SU(3) projection, triviality in renormalization, multiple SU(3) projections, uniqueness and equivalence. As a result of these theorems, we show that, at one loop level, the renormalization of staggered fermion operators is identical between SU(3) projected Fat7 links and hypercubic links, as long as the action and operators are constructed by imposing the same perturbative improvement condition. In…
By considering the local vector current between nucleon states and imposing charge conservation, we determine its renormalisation constant and quark mass improvement coefficient for Symanzik $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. The computation is first performed for quenched fermions (and for completeness also with unimproved fermions) and compared against known results. The two-flavour unquenched case is then considered.
We report on a non-perturbative computation of the renormalization factor Z_A of the axial vector current in three-flavour O(a) improved lattice QCD with Wilson quarks and tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action and also recall our recent determination of the improvement coefficient c_A. Our normalization and improvement conditions are formulated at constant physics in a Schrödinger functional setup. The normalization condition exploits the full, massive axial Ward identity to reduce finite quark mass effects in the evaluation of Z_A and correlators with boundary wave functions to suppress e…
We discuss a 3-flavour lattice QCD action with clover improvement in which the fermion matrix has single level stout smearing for the hopping terms together with unsmeared links for the clover term. With the (tree-level) Symanzik improved gluon action this constitutes the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover or SLiNC action. To cancel O(a) terms the clover term coefficient has to be tuned. We present here results of a non-perturbative determination of this coefficient using the Schroedinger functional and as a by-product a determination of the critical hopping parameter. Comparisons of the resul…
We determine O($a$) boundary improvement coefficients up to 1-loop level for the Schrödinger Functional coupling with improved gauge actions including plaquette and rectangle loops. These coefficients are required to implement 1-loop O($a$) improvement in full QCD simulations for the coupling with the improved gauge actions. To this order, lattice artifacts of step scaling function for each improved gauge action are also investigated. In addition, passing through the SF scheme, we estimate the ratio of $Λ$-parameters between the improved gauge actions and the plaquette action more accurately.
We determine quark mass dependent order $a$ improvement terms of the form $b_J am$ for non-singlet scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector currents, using correlators in coordinate space. We use a set of CLS ensembles comprising non-perturbatively improved Wilson Fermions and the tree-level Luescher-Weisz gauge action at $β=3.4,3.46,3.55$ and $β=3.7$, corresponding to lattice spacings $a$ ranging from $0.05$ fm to $0.09$ fm. We report the values of the $b_J$ improvement coefficients which are proportional to non-singlet quark mass combinations and also discuss the possibility of determini…
We carry out a perturbative determination of mass dependent renormalization factors and $O(a)$ improvement coefficients for the vector and axial vector currents with a relativistic heavy quark action, which we have designed to control $m_Qa$ errors by extending the on-shell $O(a)$ improvement program to the case of $m_Q \gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$ with $m_Q$ the heavy quark mass. We discuss what kind of improvement operators are required for the heavy-heavy and the heavy-light cases under the condition that the Euclidean rotational symmetry is not retained anymore because of the $m_Qa$ corrections. Our c…
The coefficient c_A required for O(a) improvement of the axial current in lattice QCD with N_f=3 flavors of Wilson fermions and the tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action is determined non-perturbatively. The standard improvement condition using Schroedinger functional boundary conditions is employed at constant physics for a range of couplings relevant for simulations at lattice spacings of ~ 0.09 fm and below. We define the improvement condition projected onto the zero topological charge sector of the theory, in order to avoid the problem of possibly insufficient tunneling between topolog…
The chirally rotated Schrödinger functional ($χ$SF) renders the mechanism of automatic $O(a)$ improvement compatible with the Schrödinger functional (SF) formulation. Here we report on the determination to 1-loop order in perturbation theory of the renormalization coefficients necessary to achieve automatic $O(a)$ improvement and the boundary improvement coefficients needed to eliminate the extra boundary $O(a)$ effects present in any SF formulation. After this is done, we perform a set of tests of automatic $O(a)$ improvement and of the universality between standard and chirally rotated SF fo…
We present our results on the non-perturbative evaluation of the renormalization constant for the quark field, $Z_q$, in Landau gauge within RI-MOM scheme. Using three lattice spacing we are able to isolate lattice artefacts of various origin, both perturbative and non-perturbative. In particular, the existence of the dimension-two gluon-condensate is discussed, and confirmed.
We have results from light hadron simulations in quenched QCD at beta=6.0 and 6.2 using non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert fermions in an effort to remove all order(a) effects. From looking at hadron masses and splittings and the RG-invariant quark masses (where we have one point at beta=5.7) we suggest this is plausible even with the limited data set. The interpretation of the decay constants appears to be less clear.
We present the results for a perturbative determination of mass dependent improvement coefficients $ν$, $r_s$, $c_E$ and $c_B$ in a relativistic heavy quark action, which we have designed to control $m_Qa$ errors by extending the on-shell $O(a)$ improvement program to the case of $m_Q \gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$, where $m_Q$ is the heavy quark mass. The parameters $ν$ and $r_s$ are determined from the quark propagator and $c_E$ and $c_B$ are from the on-shell quark-quark scattering amplitude. We show that all the parameters, together with the quark wave function and the mass renormalization factors, are …
The Alpha Collaboration has proposed an optimal value for c_SW in the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action, chosen to remove O(a) effects. To measure hadronic matrix elements to the same accuracy we need a method of finding O(a) improved operators, and their renormalization constants. We determine the Z factors by a non-perturbative method, measuring the matrix elements for single quark states propagating through gauge fields in the Landau gauge. The data show large effects coming from chiral symmetry breaking. This allows us to find the improvement coefficients too, by requiring that the amount of c…
We determine the mass dependent renormalization as well as improvement coefficients for the heavy-light vector and axial-vector currents consisting of the relativistic heavy and the domain-wall light quarks through the standard matching procedure. The calculation is carried out perturbatively at the one loop level to remove the systematic error of $O(α_s (am_Q)^n a\p)$ as well as $O(α_s (am_Q)^n)$ ($n\ge$0), where $\p$ is a typical momentum scale in the heavy-light system. We point out that renormalization and improvement coefficients of the heavy-light vector current agree with those of the a…
We present initial results for light hadron masses and nucleon structure functions using a recent proposal for eliminating all $O(a)$ effects from Wilson fermion simulations in the quenched approximation. With initially limited statistics, we find a much more linear APE plot and a value of the axial coupling $g_A$ nearer to the experimental point than with comparable runs using unimproved Wilson fermions.
We non-perturbatively determine the renormalization constant and the improvement coefficients relating the renormalized current and subtracted quark mass in O(a) improved two-flavour lattice QCD. We employ the Schrödinger functional scheme and fix the physical extent of the box by working at a constant value of the renormalized coupling. Our calculation yields results which cover two regions of bare parameter space. One is the weak-coupling region suitable for volumes of about half a fermi. By making simulations in this region, quarks as heavy as the bottom can be propagated with the full rela…
We propose a method to improve lattice operators composed of Wilson fermions which allows the removal of all corrections of $O(a)$, including those proportional to the quark mass, leaving only errors of $O(a^2)$. The method exploits the fact that chiral symmetry is restored at short distances. By imposing this requirement on correlation functions of improved lattice operators at short distances, the coefficients which appear in these operators can be determined. The method is an extension of the improvement program of the ALPHA collaboration, which, up to now, has only been applicable in the c…
We review the O(a) improvement of lattice QCD with special emphasis on the motivation for performing the improvement programme non-perturbatively and the general concepts of on-shell improvement. The present status of the calculations of various improvement coefficients (perturbative and non-perturbative) is reviewed, as well as the computation of the isospin current normalization constants $Z_A$ and $Z_V$. We comment on recent results for hadronic observables obtained in the improved theory.
Recently, a method for O(a) improvement of composite operators has been proposed which uses the large momentum behavior of fixed gauge quark and gluon correlation functions (G. Martinelli et al., hep-lat/0106003). A practical problem with this method is that a particular improvement coefficient, $c_{NGI}$, which has a gauge non-covariant form, is difficult to determine. Here I work out the size of the errors made in improvement coefficients and physical quantities if one does not include the $c_{NGI}$ term.
We discuss an action in which the fermion matrix has single level stout smearing for the hopping terms together with unsmeared links for the clover term. With the (tree level) Symanzik improved gluon action this constitutes the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover or SLiNC action. To cancel O(a) terms the clover coefficient, csw, has to be tuned. We present here preliminary results of a non-perturbative determination of csw using the Schrodinger functional and as a by-product also a determination of the critical hopping parameter. A determination of the renormalisation constant for the local vec…
We determine non-perturbatively the normalisation constant Z_m*Z_P/Z_A as well as the Symanzik coefficients b_m and b_A-b_P, required in O(a) improved quark mass renormalisation with Wilson fermions. The strategy underlying their computation involves simulations in N_f=3 QCD with O(a) improved massless sea and non-degenerate valence quarks in the finite-volume Schroedinger functional scheme. Our results, which cover the typical gauge coupling range of large-volume N_f=2+1 QCD simulations with Wilson fermions at lattice spacings below 0.1 fm, are of particular use for the non-perturbative calcu…
We present our preliminary results of the non-perturbative determination of the valence mass dependent coefficients $b_\mathrm{A}-b_\mathrm{P}$ and $b_\mathrm{m}$ as well as the ratio $Z_\mathrm{P} Z_\mathrm{m}/ Z_\mathrm{A}$ entering the flavour non-singlet PCAC relation in lattice QCD with $N_f=3$ dynamical flavours. We apply the method proposed in the past for quenched approximation and $N_f=2$ cases, employing a set of finite-volume ALPHA configurations with Schrödinger functional boundary conditions, generated with $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions and the tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge…
The status of simulations using the non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson action in the quenched approximation is reviewed. The impact of non-perturbative improvement on the hadronic mass spectrum and the size of residual lattice artefacts in spectral quantities and decay constants are assessed.
By imposing axial and vector Ward identities for flavour-non-singlet currents, we estimate in the quenched approximation the non-perturbative values of combinations of improvement coefficients, which appear in the expansion around the massless case of the renormalization constants of axial, pseudoscalar, vector, scalar non-singlet currents and of the renormalized mass. These coefficients are relevant for the completion of the improvement programme to O(a) of such operators. The simulations are performed with a clover Wilson action non-perturbatively improved.
Using plaquette and Symanzik improved gauge action and stout link clover fermions we determine the improvement coefficient $c_{SW}$ in one-loop lattice perturbation theory from the off-shell quark-quark-gluon three-point function. In addition, we compute the coefficients needed for the most general form of quark field improvement and present the one-loop result for the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$. We discuss mean field improvement for $c_{SW}$ and $κ_c$ and the choice of the mean field coupling for the actions we have considered.
We perform a non-perturbative determination of the O(a)-improvement coefficient c_SW for the Wilson quark action in three-flavor QCD with the plaquette gauge action. Numerical simulations are carried out in a range of β=12.0-5.2 on a single lattice size of 8^3x16 employing the Schrödinger functional setup of lattice QCD. As our main result, we obtain an interpolation formula for c_SW and the critical hopping parameter K_c as a function of the bare coupling. This enables us to remove O(a) scaling violation from physical observables in future numerical simulation in the wide range of β. Our anal…
We determine the improvement factor $c_{SW}$ in one-loop lattice perturbation theory for the plaquette and Symanzik improved gauge actions. The fermionic action is ${\mathcal{O}(a)}$ clover improved with one-time stout smearing. $c_{SW}$ is derived from the one-loop correction to the quark-quark-gluon vertex in the off-shell regime. We give a first numerical value for the one-loop contribution to the non gauge-invariant improvement coefficient $c_{NGI}$ for the quark field using the plaquette action. A discussion of mean field improvement is included.
We investigate the Symanzik improvement of the Wilson quark action on anisotropic lattices. Taking first a general action with nearest-neighbor and clover interactions, we study the mass dependence of the ratio of the hopping parameters, the clover coefficients, and an improvement coefficient for heavy-light vector and axial vector currents. We show how tree-level improvement can be achieved. For a particular choice of the spatial Wilson coupling, the results simplify, and $O(m_0a_τ)$ improvement is possible. (Here $m_0$ is the bare quark mass and $a_τ$ the temporal lattice spacing.) With this…
Non-perturbative results for improvement and renormalization constants needed for on-shell and off-shell O(a) improvement of bilinear operators composed of Wilson fermions are presented. The calculations have been done in the quenched approximation at beta=6.0, 6.2 and 6.4. To quantify residual discretization errors we compare our data with results from other non-perturbative calculations and with one-loop perturbation theory.
We propose a perturbative improvement of the hierarchical approximation for gaussian models. The procedure is based on a relabeling of the momenta which allows one to express the symmetries of the hierarchical model using a simple multiplication group. The representations of this group are used to expand the action. The perturbative expansion is treated as a problem of symmetry breaking using Ward identity techniques.
