The neutrinophilic two-Higgs-doublet model ($ν$2HDM) provides a natural way to generate tiny neutrino mass from interactions with the new doublet scalar $Φ_ν$ ($H^\pm,~H,~A$) and singlet neutrinos $N_R$ of TeV scale. In this paper, we perform detailed simulations for the lepton number violating (LNV) signatures at LHC arising from cascade decays of the new scalars and neutrinos with the mass order $m_{N_R}<m_{Φ_ν}$. Under constraints from lepton flavor violating processes and direct collider searches, their decay properties are explored and lead to three types of LNV signatures: $2\ell^\pm 4j+\cancel{E}_T$, $3\ell^\pm 4j+\cancel{E}_T$, and $3\ell^\pm\ell^\mp 4j$. We find that the same-sign trilepton signature $3\ell^\pm4j+\cancel{E}_T$ is quite unique and is the most promising discovery channel at the high-luminosity LHC. Our analysis also yields the $95\%$ C.L. exclusion limits in the plane of the $Φ_ν$ and $N_R$ masses at 13 (14) TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 100~(3000)/fb.
We investigate the search for heavy Majorana neutrinos stemming from a composite model scenario at the upcoming LHC Run II at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV. While previous studies of the composite Majorana neutrino were focussed on gauge interactions via magnetic type transition coupling between ordinary and heavy fermions (with mass $m^*$) here we complement the composite model with contact interactions at the energy scale $Λ$ and we find that the production cross sections are dominated by such contact interactions by roughly two/three orders of magnitude. This mechanism provides therefor…
The impact of axion-like particles (ALPs) on the search of permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of molecules, atoms, nuclei and nucleons is systematically investigated. We classify first the full set of CP-violating Jarlskog invariants emerging in the ALP effective field theory (EFT) containing operators up to dimension-5. Then, we evaluate the leading short-distance effects to the EDMs up to two-loop order. The high sensitivity of EDMs to CP-violating ALP interactions is emphasised exploiting both the current and projected experimental sensitivities.
We propose a new experiment to search for a time-reversal (T) symmetry breaking process in muon decay and the Majoranality of the neutrinos. In the presence of V+A interactions, the Majoranality appears as a T-violating term in the muon decay width as shown by Doi et al, while in the Standard Model such a T-violating term is negligibly small. The presences of V+A interactions and the corresponding heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos give us an important clue to solve two major issues in particle physics, the deficit of baryon asymmetry in the universe and the Majoranality of neutrinos. In th…
We study the central diffractive production of the (three neutral) Higgs bosons, with a rapidity gap on either side, in an MSSM scenario with CP-violation. We consider the bb-bar and tautau-bar decay for the light H_1 boson and the four b-jet final state for the heavy H_2 and H_3 bosons, and discuss the corresponding backgrounds. A direct indication of the existence of CP-violation can come from the observation of either an azimuthal asymmetry in the angular distribution of the tagged forward protons (for the exclusive pp -> p+H+p process) or of a sin(2phi) contribution in the azimuthal correl…
We construct a CP-violating observable which does not require flavor or CP tagging of the initial state. The proposed decay asymmetry could be measured at both threshold and non-threshold charm physics experiments and provide better sensitivity to small CP-violating parameters in charm decays.
Non-Standard-Model parity violation may be occurring in LHC collisions. Any such violation would go unseen, however, as searches are for it are not currently performed. One barrier to searches for parity violation is the lack of model-independent methods sensitive to all of its forms. We remove this barrier by demonstrating an effective and model-independent way to search for parity-violating physics at the LHC. The method is data-driven and makes no reference to any particular parity-violating model. Instead, it inspects data to construct sensitive parity-odd event variables (using machine le…
We analyze the dependence of the squared amplitudes on the rephasing-invariant CP-violating parameters of the lepton sector, involving Majorana neutrinos, for various lepton-conserving and lepton-violating processes. We analyze the conditions under which the CP-violating effects in such processes vanish, in terms of the minimal set of rephasing invariants, giving special attention to the dependence on the extra CP-violating parameters that are due to the Majorana nature of the neutrinos.
The determination of CP violating phases in the Majorana neutrino mixing matrix using phenomenological constraints from neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double beta decay, ($μ^-, e^+$) conversion and few other processes is discussed. We give the expressions for the phases in terms of the mixing angles and masses consistent with the recent data from Kamiokande.
In a novel parametrization of neutrino mixing and in the approximation of $τ$-lepton dominance, we show that the one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) of Dirac neutrinos are different from those of Majorana neutrinos even if two Majorana CP-violating phases vanish. As the latter can keep vanishing from the electroweak scale to the typical seesaw scale, it makes sense to distinguish between the RGE running effects of neutrino mixing parameters in Dirac and Majorana cases. The differences are found to be quite large in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with sizable $\tanβ$, pro…
In the Standard Model minimally extended to include massive neutrinos, we compute the leading CP-violating zero temperature contributions to the one-loop effective action induced by integration of the leptons. Such contributions start at operators of dimension six and they are P even for Dirac neutrinos and P even or odd for Majorana neutrinos. Dimension four operators are allowed in the mixed Dirac-Majorana case. It is verified by explicit calculation that CP can be violated in two generation settings for Majorana neutrinos. Using different neutrino scenarios we give upper bounds for the coup…
We reanalyze the constraints in neutrino masses and MNS lepton mixing parameters using the new data from the terrestrial (KamLAND) and astrophysical (WMAP) observations together with the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW double beta decay experiment. It leads us to the almost degenerate or inverse hierarchy neutrino mass scenario. We discuss the possibility of getting the bound for the Majorana CP violating phase.
A Majorana type of the neutrino mass matrix induces a class of lepton number violating processes. Cross sections of these reactions are given in terms of the neutrino mass matrix element, and a semi-realistic event rate is estimated. These processes provide mass and mixing parameters not directly accessible by the neutrino oscillation experiments. If these processes are discovered with a larger rate than given here, it would imply a new physics of the lepton number violation not directly related to the Majorana neutrino mass, such as R-parity violating operators in SUSY models.
We analyze neutrino oscillation for the general case when the initial neutrino is not in a pure flavor state. We show that, after such a neutrino beam propagates for a while, the probability of detecting any pure flavor state depends even on the CP-violating Majorana phases in the mixing matrix. The dependence remains even when energy spectrum of the initial beam is taken into account. We discuss various implications of this dependence.
We derive some properties of the Nambu-Goldstone boson coupling in theories that have CP violation and Majorana masses. We show explicitly that its diagonal coupling to a Majorana fermion is pseudoscalar not scalar. This clarifies some confusion in the literature. Some potentially useful off-diagonal properties are also derived. We also show, in the process, that the Goldstone theorem often produces interesting and nontrivial identities in matrix theory which may be hard to prove otherwise.
We propose a new strategy for detecting the CP-violating phases and the effective mass of muon Majorana neutrinos by measuring observables associated with neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in $π^{\pm}$ decays. Within the generic framework of quantum field theory, we compute the non-factorizable probability for producing a pair of same-charged muons in $π^{\pm}$ decays as a distinctive signature of $ν_μ-\bar{ν_μ}$ oscillations. We show that an intense neutrino beam through a long baseline experiment is favored for probing the Majorana phases. Using the neutrino-antineutrino oscillation probabi…
Several beyond the Standard Model scenarios introduce new heavy neutrinos, whose Dirac or Majorana nature could be tested by comparing the rates of lepton number violating and lepton number conserving processes: a Dirac fermion induces only the latter, while a Majorana one predicts the same rate for both of them. Nevertheless, in the presence of more than one Majorana fermion, this picture may change drastically due to interference effects. We focus on lepton number violating and lepton flavour violating semileptonic meson decays induced by two heavy Majorana fermions, exploring the necessary …
The CP-violating phases associated with Majorana neutrinos can give rise to CP-violating effects even in processes that conserve total Lepton number, such as μ-> eee+, μ+ e -> e + e and others. After explaining the reasons that make this happen, we consider the calculation of the rates for the process of the form \ell_a + \ell_b -> \ell_a + \ell_c, and its conjugate \bar\ell_a + \bar\ell_b -> \bar\ell_a + \bar\ell_c, where \ell_a, \ell_b and \ell_c denote charged leptons of different flavors. In the context of the Standard Model with Majorana neutrinos, we show that the difference in the rates…
It is well known, that R-parity violating supersymmetric models predict a non-zero magnetic moment for neutrinos. In this work we study the Majorana neutrino transition magnetic moments within an RpV modified minimal supergravity model. Specifically, we discuss the contributions coming from the charged Higgs bosons, higgsinos, leptons, sleptons, charged gauge bosons, and charginos. We use the experimental results from the MUNU collaboration to restrict the model's parameter space. A comparison with two other types of contributions (only trilinear RpV couplings and trilinear plus neutrino--neut…
We investigate the lepton flavor violating (LFV) rare decays in the supersymmetric minimal seesaw model in which the Frampton-Glashow-Yanagida ansatz is incorporated. The branching ratio of $μ\to e γ$ is calculated in terms of the Snowmass Points and Slopes (SPS). We find that the inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored by all SPS points. In addition, once the ratio of BR$(τ\to μγ)$ to BR$(μ\to e γ)$ is measured, one may distinguish the normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies, and confirm the masses of heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos by means of the LFV processes and the thermal lept…
We investigate effects of non-zero Dirac and Majorana CP violating phases on neutrino-antineutrino oscillations in a magnetic field of astrophysical environments. It is shown that in the presence of strong magnetic fields and dense matter, non-zero CP phases can induce new resonances in the oscillations channels $ν_e \leftrightarrow \barν_e$, $ν_e \leftrightarrow \barν_μ$ and $ν_e \leftrightarrow \barν_τ$. We also consider all other possible oscillation channels with $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ in the initial state. The resonances can potentially lead to significant phenomena in neutrino oscillations acce…
We discuss some generic properties of lepton number violating (\Lv) processes and their relation to different entries of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix. Present and near future experiments searching for these processes, except the neutrinoless double beta decay, are unable to probe light(eV mass region) and heavy(hundred GeV mass region) neutrinos. On the other hand due to the effect of a resonant enhancement, some of \Lv decays can be very sensitive to the intermediate mass neutrinos with typical masses in hundred MeV region. These neutrinos may appear as admixtures of the three active and…
We study the Lepton number violating like-sign dilepton processes $h_1 h_2 \to l^\pm l^{\prime \pm} jj X$ and $h_1 h_2 \to l^\pm l^{\prime \pm} W^\pm X$, mediated by heavy GeV scale Majorana neutrinos. We focus on the resonantly enhanced contributions with a nearly on-mass-shell Majorana neutrino in the s-channel. We study the constraints on like-sign dilepton production at the Tevatron and the LHC on the basis of the existing experimental limits on the masses of heavy neutrinos and their mixings $U_{αN}$ with $α= ν_{e}, ν_μ, ν_τ$. Special attention is paid to the constraints from neutrinoless…
We present predictions for CP violating phases of the Type-I seesaw model with four-zero textures on the Dirac mass matrix. For the four-zero textures, the effective low energy Majorana mass matrix is parametrized with seven parameters. They are three mass-dimensional parameters, two angles and two CP violating sources. The number of these parameters is less than that of the general description of the Majorana mass matrix with three neutrino masses, three mixing angles and three CP violating phases. In particular, only two independent CP violating sources give rise to three CP violating phases…
The observation of lepton flavor violating processes at colliders could be a clear signal of a non-minimal neutrino sector. We define a 5-parameter model with a pair of TeV fermion singlets and arbitrary mixings with the three active neutrino flavors. Then we analyze several flavor violating transitions ($\ell\to \ell^{\prime}γ,\,\ell^{\prime}\ell^{\prime\prime}\bar{\ell}^{\prime\prime\prime}$ or $μ-e$ conversions in nuclei) and $Z\to\bar{\ell}\,\ell^{\prime}$ decays induced by the presence of heavy neutrinos. In particular, we calculate all the one-loop contributions to these processes and pr…
We discuss constraints on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R of the SUSY see-saw model in the mSUGRA framework. The sensitivity of radiative lepton-flavor violating decays on M_R is compared with the reach in lepton-flavor violating channels at a future linear collider.
In the minimal extension of the standard electroweak theory with ultra massive Majorana neutrinos, the process e- + e- -> mu- + mu- could be observable, in sharp contrast with the reaction e- + e- -> W- + W- which is entirely controlled by neutrinoless double beta decay $ββ_{0 ν}$ data. Our result provides the process background that must be confronted "new physics" models which postulate doubly charged particles, such as the gauge bilepton Y^{-} in the $SU(3)_{\rm c} \times SU(3)_{\rm L} \times U(1)$ model, the left-right $SU(2)_{\rm L} \times SU(2)_{\rm R} \times U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ one, and its…
Three CP-violating phases of the $3\times 3$ lepton flavor mixing matrix $V$, denoted as $δ$, $ρ$ and $σ$ in a useful phase convention, are entangled with one another in the one-loop renormalization-group equations. We show that $δ=90^\circ$ at the electroweak scale ($Λ_{\rm EW} \sim 10^{2}$ GeV) can be radiatively generated from $δ=0^\circ$ at the seesaw scale ($Λ_{\rm SS} \sim 10^{14}$ GeV) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, provided three neutrino masses are nearly degenerate. As for the Majorana phases $ρ$ and $σ$, it is also possible to radiatively generate $ρ=90^\circ$ or $σ= …
We study CP asymmetries in lepton-number violating two-body scattering processes and show how they are related to CP asymmetries in the decays of intermediate massive Majorana neutrinos. Self-energy corrections, which do not contribute to CP asymmetries in two-body processes, induce CP violating couplings of the intermediate Majorana neutrinos to lepton-Higgs states. We briefly comment on the implications of these results for applications at finite temperature.
We consider the MSSM with see-saw mechanism of neutrino mass generation and soft SUSY breaking with flavour-universal boundary conditions at the GUT scale, in which the lepton flavour violating (LFV) decays μ\to e + γ, τ\to μ+ γ, etc.,are predicted with rates that can be within the reach of present and planned experiments. These predictions depend critically on the matrix of neutrino Yukawa couplings \bf{Y_ν} which can be expressed in terms of the light and heavy right-handed (RH) neutrino masses, neutrino mixing matrix U_{PMNS}, and an orthogonal matrix \bf{R}. We investigate the effects of M…
We demonstrate the ability to measure the CP-phase of a Higgs boson state by looking at the decays of heavy, Majorana neutrinos in the process $pp \to H \to N N$ at the LHC. This is shown for signals with both opposite-sign ($l^{\pm} l^{\mp} W^{\pm} W^{\mp}$) and same-sign ($l^{\pm} l^{\pm} W^{\mp} W^{\mp}$) leptonic final states. These signals are investigated in the general framework of a sequential fourth generation of fermions with an additional right-handed neutrino. Such a scenario would naturally give rise to heavy Majorana neutrinos as well as significant enhancements to Higgs producti…
We analyse the dependence of the rates of the LFV charged lepton decays mu to e + gamma, tau to e + gamma, tau to mu + gamma (l_i to l_j + gamma) and their ratios, predicted in the class of SUSY theories with see-saw mechanism of nu-mass generation and soft SUSY breaking with universal boundary conditions at the GUT scale, on the Majorana CP-violation phases in the PMNS neutrino mixing matrix and the ``leptogenesis'' CP-violating (CPV) parameters. The case of quasi-degenerate in mass heavy Majorana neutrinos is considered. The analysis is performed for normal hierarchical (NH), inverted hierar…
The Schechter-Valle theorem states that a positive observation of neutrinoless double-beta ($0νββ$) decays implies a finite Majorana mass term for neutrinos when any unlikely fine-tuning or cancellation is absent. In this note, we reexamine the quantitative impact of the Schechter-Valle theorem, and find that current experimental lower limits on the half-lives of $0νββ$-decaying nuclei have placed a restrictive upper bound on the Majorana neutrino mass $|δm^{ee}_ν| < 7.43 \times 10^{-29}~{\rm eV}$ radiatively generated at the four-loop level. Furthermore, we generalize this quantitative analys…
Assuming that neutrinos are Majorana particles, in a three generation framework, current and future neutrino oscillation experiments can determine six out of the nine parameters which fully describe the structure of the neutrino mass matrix. We try to clarify the interplay among the remaining parameters, the absolute neutrino mass scale and two CP violating Majorana phases, and how they can be accessed by future neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay experiments, for the normal as well as for the inverted order of the neutrino mass spectrum. Assuming the oscillation parameters to be in the ra…
We hunt for and discuss manifestly CP-violating effects which are mediated by Majorana phases. These phases are present if the Standard Model neutrinos are Majorana particles. We argue that while Majorana phases do affect the strength of neutrinoless double beta decay (a well known fact), they do so in a way that involves no manifest violation of CP. The conditions for manifestly CP-violating phenomena -- differences between the rates for CP-mirror-image processes -- are presented, and three examples are discussed: (i) neutrino-antineutrino oscillation; (ii) rare decays of K and B mesons and t…
The $B\toπK$ decays with significant electroweak penguin contributions show a puzzling pattern. We explore this "$B\toπK$ puzzle" through a systematic strategy. The starting point, which is essentially unaffected by electroweak penguins, is the determination of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle through the CP-violating $B^0_d\toπ^+π^-$, $B^0_d\toπ^-K^+$ asymmetries, yielding $γ=(73.9^{+5.8}_{-6.5})^\circ$, and the extraction of hadronic parameters through the measured $B\toππ$ branching ratios. Using arguments related to the SU(3) flavour symmetry, we convert the hadronic $B\toππ$ parame…
We discuss rare lepton-number-violating top-quark and W-boson four-body decays to final states containing a same-charge lepton pair, of the same or of different flavors: t -> b W- li^+ lj^+ and W+ -> J J' li^+ lj^+, where i \ne j or i=j and J J' stands for two light jets originating from a (u-bar d) or a (c-bar s) pair. These ΔL=2 decays are forbidden in the Standard Model and may be mediated by exchanges of Majorana neutrinos. We adopt a model independent approach for the Majorana neutrinos mixing pattern and calculate the branching ratios (BR) for these decays. We find, for example, that for…
If the massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, neutrinoless double beta ($0νββ$) decay experiments are not enough to determine the Majorana phases. We carry out a systematic study of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations. In these processes, CP-conserving parts involve six independent $0νββ$-like mass terms $\langle m\rangle_{αβ}$ and CP-violating parts are associated with nine independent Jarlskog-like parameters ${\cal V}^{ij}_{αβ}$ (for $α, β= e, μ, τ$ and $i, j = 1, 2,3$). With the help of current neutrino oscillation data, we illustrate the salient features of six independe…
Taking the standard parametrization of three-flavor neutrino mixing, we carefully examine the evolution of three CP-violating phases $(δ, α^{}_1, α^{}_2)$ with energy scales in the realistic limit $θ^{}_{13} \to 0$. If $m^{}_3$ vanishes, we find that the one-loop renormalization-group equation (RGE) of $δ$ does not diverge and its running has no quasi-fixed point. When $m^{}_3 \neq 0$ holds, we show that the continuity condition derived by Antusch {\it et al} is always valid, no matter whether the $τ$-dominance approximation is taken or not. The RGE running of $δ$ undergoes a quasi-fixed point…
We prove a general low-energy theorem establishing a generic relation between the neutrino Majorana mass and the superpartner sneutrino B-L-violating "Majorana"-like mass term. The theorem states that, if one of these two quantities is non-zero the other one is also non-zero and, vice versa, if one of them vanishes the other vanishes, too. The theorem is a consequence of the underlying supersymmetry (SUSY) and valid for any realistic gauge model with weak scale softly broken SUSY.
We consider the lepton-number-violating processes in $Λ_b$/$Λ_c$ decays mediated by on-shell GeV-scale sterile neutrino. We calculate the branching ratio for the following processes: $Λ_b^{0} \rightarrow \mathcal{B}^+ μ^{-}μ^- π^+$, where $\mathcal{B}^+$ is $Λ_c^+$ or proton, and $Λ_c^{+} \rightarrow Λμ^{+}μ^+ π^-$, as function of the mass of the sterile neutrino $m_N$ and the heavy-light mixing coefficient of the extended Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix $|U_{μN}|^2$. The effect of finite detector size is included in our calculation. After comparing the theoretical effective bran…
In this work, the lepton-number-violating processes in $|ΔL|=2$ decays of $Λ_b^0$ baryon, $Λ_b^0 \to p π^+μ^- μ^-$ and $Λ_b^0 \to Λ_c^+ π^+μ^- μ^-$, are investigated for the first time, via an intermediate on-shell Majorana neutrino $N$ with a mass in the GeV scale. We explore the experimental sensitivity of these dimuon channels at the LHCb and CMS experiments, in which heavy neutrino lifetimes in the accessible ranges of $τ_N = [1, 100, 1000]$ ps are considered. For a integrated luminosity collected of 10 and 50 fb${}^{-1}$ at the LHCb and 30, 300 and 3000 fb${}^{-1}$ at the CMS, we found si…
We examine the low-energy signatures of axion-like particles (ALPs) in lepton flavor violating (LFV) processes. By using a dimension-5 effective Lagrangian, we compute the most general ALP contributions to LFV decays of leptons and mesons. The provided expressions are valid for any choice of ALP mass and couplings. We explore the complementarity of different processes, identifying specific patterns to be experimentally tested. Constraints on LFV couplings are derived from existing data and prospects for forthcoming experiments are also discussed. As a by-product, we revisit the possibility of …
We apply the see-saw mechanism and an SO(10) model to neutrino masses and mixing in order to estimate the heavy Majorana masses. We discuss shortly the decay modes of heavy Majorana neutrinos and calculate their contribution to the lepton number violating processes μ\to eγ, τ\toμγand τ\to eγ.
The existence of Majorana neutrinos must lead to lepton-number violating processes, and the Majorana nature of neutrinos can only be experimentally verified via lepton-number violating processes. We propose a new approach to search for Majorana neutrinos at future electron-positron colliders by exploiting this feature. We investigate the $ΔL = 2$ like-sign dilepton production and find that lepton colliders with different center-of-mass energies have comparative advantages in resonant production of a Majorana neutrino in either light neutrino mass range or heavy mass range. At the future Circul…
If the massive neutrinos are identified to be the Majorana particles via a convincing measurement of the neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay, how to determine the Majorana CP-violating phases in the 3 x 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix U will become a desirable experimental question. The answer to this question is to explore all the possible lepton-number-violating (LNV) processes in which the Majorana phases really matter. In this paper we carry out a systematic study of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, whose CP-conserving parts involve six independent 0νββ-like mass terms <…
During a large period of time, the anomalous baryon number violating interactions are in equilibrium, when the $(B+L)$ asymmetry is washed out. If there is any lepton number violation during this period, that will also erase the $(B-L)$ asymmetry. As a result, survival of the baryon asymmetry of the universe pose strong constraints on lepton number violating interactions. We review here the constraints on the left-handed Majorana neutrino masses arising from this survival requirement of the baryon asymmetry of the universe. We then briefly review models of leptogenesis, where lepton number vio…
Motivated by the recent investigation of neutrinoless $τ$-lepton decays by the CLEO collaboration, we perform a systematic analysis of such decays in a possible new-physics scenario with heavy Dirac/Majorana neutrinos, including heavy-neutrino nondecoupling effects, finite quark masses, and quark as well as meson mixings. We find that $τ$-lepton decays into an electron or muon and a pseudoscalar or vector meson can have branching ratios close to the experimental sensitivity. Numerical estimates show that the predominant decay modes of this kind are $τ^-\to e^-ϕ$, $τ^-\to e^-ρ^0$, and $τ^-\to e…
Lepton-number violation (LNV), in general, implies nonzero Majorana masses for the Standard Model neutrinos. Since neutrino masses are very small, for generic candidate models of the physics responsible for LNV, the rates for almost all experimentally accessible LNV observables -- except for neutrinoless double-beta decay -- are expected to be exceedingly small. Guided by effective-operator considerations of LNV phenomena, we identify a complete family of models where lepton number is violated but the generated Majorana neutrino masses are tiny, even if the new-physics scale is below 1 TeV. We…
The lepton number violating interactions generated by the light Majorana neutrinos can erase the primordial baryon asymmetry of the universe during the electroweak phase transition. The Majorana masses of the left-handed neutrinos are constrained to avoid this problem. These constraints do not depend on the $(B-L)$ symmetry breaking mechanism.
The Majorana neutrino mass textures with a texture zero and a vanishing cofactor are reconsidered in the light of current experimental results. A numerical and systematic analysis is carried out for all viable patterns. In particular, we focus on the phenomenological implication of correlations between three mixing angle (especially for $θ_{23}$), Dirac CP-violating phase $δ$, the effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ee}$. We demonstrated that the correlations between these variables play an important role in the model selection and can be measured in future long-baseline oscillation and neutr…
In extensions of the Standard Model by Majorana fermions, the presence of additional CP violating phases has been shown to play a crucial role in lepton number violating processes. In this work we show that (Dirac and Majorana) CP violating phases can also lead to important effects in charged lepton flavour violating (cLFV) transitions and decays, in some cases with a significant impact for the predicted rates of cLFV observables. We conduct a thorough exploration of these effects in several cLFV observables, and discuss the implications for future observation. We emphasise how the presence of…
In [Phys. Lett. B 780, 216 (2018)], Capolupo et al. calculate the noncyclic geometric phases associated with neutrino flavor transitions in the two-neutrino scenario, and claim that the results depend on the choice of representations of neutrino mixing matrix thus can be use to distinguish between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. In this paper, we show that their calculation is flawed due to incorrect application of the definition of noncyclic geometric phase and the omission of one term in Wolfenstein effective Hamiltonian. Their results are neither gauge invariant nor lepton field rephasing inv…
We revisit the neutrino magnetic moments (MMs) in the left-right model with non-manifest symmetry. After deriving an expression in terms of the Dirac and Majorana phases, we analyze the sensitivity of neutrino MMs to these $CP$-violating phases in two scenarios: 1) a maximal right mixing in which left- and right-handed neutrinos are mixed by the same matrix; and 2) a right-handed neutrino mixing whose off-diagonal entries are much smaller than the elements in the diagonal, but where the $CP$ phases remain general. Our results show that, even though certain values of the Majorana phases can eli…
After introducing a master formula for the Majorana neutrino mass matrix we present a master parametrization for the Yukawa matrices automatically in agreement with neutrino oscillation data. This parametrization can be used for any model that induces Majorana neutrino masses. The application of the master parametrization is also illustrated in an example model, with special focus on its lepton flavor violating phenomenology.
A generalized connection between the quantum mechanical Bargmann invariants and the geometric phases was established for the Dirac fermions. We extend that formalism for the Majorana fermions by defining proper quantum mechanical ray and Hilbert spaces. We then relate both the Dirac and Majorana type Bargmann invariants to the rephasing invariant measures of CP violation with the Majorana neutrinos, assuming that the neutrinos have lepton number violating Majorana masses. We then generalize the recursive parametrization for studying any unitary matrices to include the Majorana fermions, which …
As is well-known, there exist totally three CP-violating phases in the leptonic sector if three ordinary neutrinos are massive Majorana particles. In this short note, we raise the question whether the number of sufficient and necessary conditions for CP conservation in the leptonic sector with massive Majorana neutrinos is three or four. An intuitive answer to this question would be three, which is also the total number of independent CP-violating phases. However, we give a counter example, in which three conditions are in general not sufficient for CP conservation. Only for all the lepton mas…
