As is well-known, there exist totally three CP-violating phases in the leptonic sector if three ordinary neutrinos are massive Majorana particles. In this short note, we raise the question whether the number of sufficient and necessary conditions for CP conservation in the leptonic sector with massive Majorana neutrinos is three or four. An intuitive answer to this question would be three, which is also the total number of independent CP-violating phases. However, we give a counter example, in which three conditions are in general not sufficient for CP conservation. Only for all the lepton masses and mixing angles within their experimentally allowed ranges can we demonstrate that it is possible to find out three weak-basis invariants, which should be vanishing to guarantee leptonic CP conservation.
In this talk, we present a recent investigation of the sufficient and necessary conditions for CP conservation in the leptonic sector with massive Majorana neutrinos in terms of CP-odd weak-basis invariants. The number of weak-basis invariants to guarantee CP conservation in the leptonic sector is clarified and a new set of invariants are advocated for the description of CP conservation, given the physical parameters in their experimentally allowed regions.
In this paper, we carry out a systematic study of the sufficient and necessary conditions for CP conservation in the leptonic sector with massive Majorana neutrinos. In particular, the emphasis is placed on the number of CP-violating phases in the presence of a partial mass degeneracy (e.g., $m^{}_1 = m^{}_2 \neq m^{}_3$) or a complete mass degeneracy $m^{}_1 = m^{}_2 = m^{}_3$, where $m^{}_i$ (for $i = 1, 2, 3$) stand for the masses of three ordinary neutrinos. In the canonical seesaw model with three right-handed neutrino singlets, CP-violating phases in the special case of a partial (e.g., …
We analyze both chirality-changing and chirality-preserving transitions of Dirac-Majorana neutrinos. In vacuum, the first ones are suppressed with respect to the others due to helicity conservation and the interactions with a (``normal'') medium practically does not affect the expressions of the probabilities for these transitions, even if the amplitudes of oscillations slightly change. For usual situations involving relativistic neutrinos we find no resonant enhancement for all flavour-conserving transitions. However, for very light neutrinos propagating in superdense media, the pattern of os…
Majorana neutrinos naturally lead to a Lepton Number Violation (LNV). A superposition of Majorana states can mimic Dirac-type neutrinos, leading to its conservation (LNC). We demonstrate on the example of specific observables related to high and low energy processes how a strength of LNV correlates with neutrino parameters such as CP-phases, flavor mixings, mass ratios. We stress the coaction between low and high energy studies for putting phenomenological models to a quantitative test. Secondly, we conclude that in order to fully study the role of heavy neutrinos in search for New Physics (NP…
We study CP violation in the lepton sector in extended models with right-handed neutrinos, without and with left-right symmetry, and with arbitrary mass terms. We find the conditions which must be satisfied by the neutrino and charged lepton mass matrices for CP conservation. These constraints, which are independent of the choice of weak basis, are proven to be also sufficient in simple cases. This invariant formulation makes apparent the necessary requirements for CP violation, as well as the size of CP violating effects. As an example, we show that CP violation can be much larger in left-rig…
In the recent note we argued that most of the available positive and negative neutrino oscillation data can be incorporated in a four-neutrino weak interaction model with one physical condition: thorough maximal mixing of the neutrino components in each of the two mass doublets. On the level of CP-invariance an extended Pontecorvo analogy between the neutrino oscillations and the K^0-meson oscillations, which implied maximal violation of the lepton charge conservation in the neutrino mass matrix exclusively, can afford a physical clue to the three data dictated assumptions in a model with thre…
We investigate a scheme for making leptogenesis by means of the CP violating decays of the seesaw Majorana neutrinos proposed by Fukugita and Yanagida. However, in order to avoid the wash-out of the produced lepton number we propose the production of the Majorana neutrinos to occur non-thermally and sufficiently late. After this time, in consequence, the B-L (baryon minus lepton) quantum number becomes a good ``accidental symmetry'' protecting the asymmetry produced. This non-thermal leptogenesis at late time is realized by a boson decaying into the Majorana neutrinos with a long lifetime. Sug…
(abridged) The physical mechanisms that make a neutrino with standard-model (SM) weak interactions a "lepton-number conservation (LNC) violating" neutrino such as the Majorana neutrino are analysed in a basis of two Majorana states that have opposite charge-parity ("charge-parity basis"). A small Majorana mass that is larger than any Dirac mass makes the neutrino not a Majorana but a "pseudo-Majorana" particle that has no definite chirality and therefore has a different phenomenology than the physical neutrino. A combination of a large Majorana and Dirac mass of nearly equal value makes the ne…
Experimental observation of Majorana fermion matter gives a new impetus to the understanding of the Lorentz symmetry and its extension, the geometrical properties of the ambient space-time structure, matter--antimatter symmetry and some new ways to understand the baryo-genesis problem in cosmology. Based on the primordial Majorana fermion matter assumption, we discuss a possibility to solve the baryo-genesis problem through the the Majorana-Diraco genesis in which we have a chance to understand creation of Q(em) charge and its conservation in our D=1+3 Universe after the Big Bang. In the Major…
The intent of this paper is to convey a new primary physical idea of a Dirac-Majorana neutrino duality in relation to the topical problem of neutrino oscillations. In view of the new atmospheric, solar and the LSND neutrino oscillation data, the Pontecorvo $ν- K^0$ oscillation analogy is generalized to the notion of neutrino duality with substantially different physical meaning ascribed to the long-baseline and the short-baseline neutrino oscillations. At the level of CP-invariance, the suggestion of dual neutrino properties defines the symmetric two-mixing-angle form of the widely discussed f…
We present a scenario of neutrino masses and mixing angles. Each generation includes a sterile right handed neutrino in addition to the usual left handed one. We assume a hierarchy in their Dirac masses similar to, but much larger than the hierarchies in the quarks and charged leptons. In addition, we include a Majorana mass term for the sterile neutrinos only. These assumptions prove sufficient to accomodate scales of mass differences and mixing angles consistent with all existing neutrino oscillation data.
We derive the zero mode solutions for a Majorana fermion in the background of a cosmic string and contrast it with the zero mode solution for a (neutral) Dirac fermion. A Majorana zero mode carries no vector or axial charge, and it cannot be bosonised. We study the implications for vorton formation and stability. In the massless limit stability of the zero mode is guaranteed by energy-momentum conservation. However, zero modes obtain an effective mass on string loops. It is found that the conditions under which current formation can be effective are exactly those for which zero mode decay is m…
We show how Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) can occur for Majorana neutrinos, without inducing LIV in the charged leptons via radiative corrections. Such ``electrophobic'' LIV is due to the Majorana nature of the LIV operator together with electric charge conservation. Being free from the strong constraints coming from the charged lepton sector, electrophobic LIV can in principle be as large as current neutrino experiments permit. On the other hand electrophobic LIV could be naturally small if it originates from LIV in some singlet ``right-handed neutrino'' sector, and is felt in the physic…
The problem of CP conservation and CP violation for two heavy neutrinos production in $e^+e^-$ interaction is considered. Very convenient way of parametrization of the neutrino mass matrix, from which necessary and sufficient condition for CP conservation easily follows, is presented. Contrary to the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism, the effects of CP violation in the lepton sector with Majorana neutrinos can be very large. Change of the total cross section caused by CP violation can be much larger then the cross section itself.
The scenario of baryogenesis through leptogenesis is reviewed in models involving heavy Majorana neutrinos. The various mechanisms of CP violation occurring in the out-of-equilibrium lepton-number-violating decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos are studied within a resummation approach to unstable-particle mixing. It is explicitly demonstrated how the resummation approach preserves crucial field-theoretic properties such as unitarity and CPT invariance. Predictions of representative scenarios are presented after solving numerically the Boltzmann equations describing the thermodynamic evolution of…
We propose an alternative formulation of a Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) where the difference between baryon number ($B$) and lepton number ($L$) remains an unbroken symmetry. This is unlike the conventional formulation, where $B-L$ is promoted to a local symmetry and is broken explicitly in order to generate Majorana neutrino masses. In our case $B-L$ remains a global symmetry after the left-right symmetry breaking, allowing only Dirac mass terms for neutrinos. In addition to parity restoration at some high scale, this formulation provides a natural framework to explain $B-L$ as an anomal…
We find set of necessary and sufficient conditions for CP conservation in the most general 2HDM in terms of observable quantities. This set contains two relatively easily testable simple conditions instead of usually discussed three more complex ones.
We consider an extension of the Standard Model, where the difference between the baryon number $B$ and the lepton number $L$ is gauged with an Abelian gauge field, in order to explain the exact conservation of $B-L$. To avoid a gauge anomaly, we add a right-handed neutrino $ν_{\rm R}$ to each fermion generation. Here it is not sterile, so the usual Majorana term is excluded by gauge invariance. We provide a mass term for $ν_{\rm R}$ by adding a non-standard 1-component Higgs field, thus arriving at a consistent extension of the Standard Model, where the conservation of $B-L$ is natural, with a…

The PMNS neutrino mixing matrix is given, in general, by the product of two unitary matrices associated with the diagonalization of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, respectively. Assuming that the active flavor neutrinos possess a Majorana mass matrix which is diagonalized by a bimaximal mixing matrix, we give the allowed forms of the charged lepton mixing matrix and the corresponding implied forms of the charged lepton mass matrix. We further assume that the origin of bimaximal mixing is a weakly broken flavor symmetry of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix, corresponding to the c…
It is well known that there exist many mechanisms that may contribute to neutrinoless double beta decay (0nbb-decay). By exploiting the fact that the associated nuclear matrix elements are target dependent we show that, given definite experimental results on a sufficient number of targets, one can determine or sufficiently constrain all lepton violating parameters including the mass term. As a specific example we show that, assuming the observation of the 0nbb-decay in three different nuclei, e.g., 76Ge, 100Mo and 130Te, and just three lepton number violating mechanisms (light and heavy neutri…
Assuming 3-neutrino mixing and massive Majorana neutrinos, we analyze the possibility of establishing the existence of CP-violation associated with Majorana neutrinos in the lepton sector i) by measuring of the effective Majorana mass |<m>| in neutrinoless double beta-decay with a sufficient precision and ii) by measuring of, or obtaining a stringent upper limit on, the lightest neutrino mass m1. Information on m1 can be obtained in the tritium beta decay experiment KATRIN and from astrophysical and cosmological observations. Proving that the indicated CP-violation takes place requires, in par…
Doubly charged Higgs bosons (H^++) are a distinctive signature of the Higgs Triplet Model of neutrino mass generation. If H^++ is relatively light (m_{H^++} < 400GeV) it will be produced copiously at the LHC, which could enable precise measurements of the branching ratios of the decay channels H^++ to l_i l_j. Such branching ratios are determined solely by the neutrino mass matrix which allows the model to be tested at the LHC. We quantify the dependence of the leptonic branching ratios on the absolute neutrino mass and Majorana phases, and present the permitted values for the channels ee, emu…
The radiative type-I seesaw has been already implemented to explain the lightness of Majorana neutrinos with both Majorana and Dirac heavy fermions, and the lightness of Dirac neutrinos with Dirac heavy fermions. In this work we present a minimal implementation of the radiative type-I seesaw with light Dirac neutrinos and heavy Majorana fermions. An inert doublet and a complex singlet scalar complete the dark sector which is protected by an Abelian fermiophobic gauge symmetry that also forbids tree level mass contributions for the full set of light neutrinos. A fermion vector-like extension of…
We show how nonzero Majorana neutrino masses can be radiatively generated by extending the MSSM with leptoquark chiral multiplets without violating R-parity. It is found that, with these particles, the R-parity conservation does not imply lepton number conservation. Neutrino masses generated at a one-loop level are closely related to the down quark mass matrix. The ratio of neutrino mass-squared splittings $Δm^2_{ν_2-ν_1}/Δm^2_{ν_3-ν_2}$ obtained is naturally close to $Δm^2_{s-d}/Δm^2_{b-s}\sim 10^{-3}$ which is in the right region required to explain both the atmospheric neutrino data and the…
The physics responsible for neutrino masses and lepton mixing remains unknown. More experimental data are needed to constrain and guide possible generalizations of the standard model of particle physics, and reveal the mechanism behind nonzero neutrino masses. Here, the physics associated with searches for the violation of lepton-flavor conservation in charged-lepton processes and the violation of lepton-number conservation in nuclear physics processes is summarized. In the first part, several aspects of charged-lepton flavor violation are discussed, especially its sensitivity to new particles…
Conservation of baryon number as topological charge in effective chiral field theories imposes a local constraint on the time evolution of field configurations in the commonly used O(4) model. Possible consequences for the formation of chiral condensates after a quench from random initial configurations are discussed. It is argued that efficient dissipative terms are necessary but not sufficient to unwind the randomly curled-up initial configuration, before collective motion towards the condensate can grow. The existence of soliton stabilizing mechanisms will further prolong or prevent this pr…
It is shown that neutrino oscillation and Majorana type neutrino are not compatible with Special Theory of Relativity. Instead of the Majorana type neutrino, traditional neutrino(no rest mass) is considered with additional assumptions that right-handed neutrino and left-handed antineutrino exist in nature and naturally thus parity is conserved. Besides, neutrino itself is considered as longitudinal vacuum-string oscillations. To explain parity conservation, W+(W-) bosons are suggested as momentary interacting states between positron (electron) and virtual-positive(negative)-charge strings, res…
We analyse the dependence of the rates of the LFV charged lepton decays mu to e + gamma, tau to e + gamma, tau to mu + gamma (l_i to l_j + gamma) and their ratios, predicted in the class of SUSY theories with see-saw mechanism of nu-mass generation and soft SUSY breaking with universal boundary conditions at the GUT scale, on the Majorana CP-violation phases in the PMNS neutrino mixing matrix and the ``leptogenesis'' CP-violating (CPV) parameters. The case of quasi-degenerate in mass heavy Majorana neutrinos is considered. The analysis is performed for normal hierarchical (NH), inverted hierar…
We discuss the most general necessary and sufficient condition for three massless light neutrinos in variants of the type I seesaw mechanism in which we introduce an arbitrary number of fermionic gauge singlets. We find that having massless light neutrinos is equivalent to enforcing the conservation of lepton number. As a consequence, any symmetry that leads to massless light neutrinos will contain as an unbroken subgroup a conserved lepton number. This will be important for searches for heavy sterile neutrinos since in general the light neutrino masses will be proportional to small lepton num…
Heavy sterile neutrinos with masses below $M_W$ can induce trilepton events at the 14 TeV LHC through purely leptonic $W$ decays of $W^\pm \to e^\pm e^\pm μ^\mp ν$ and $μ^\pm μ^\pm e^\mp ν$ where the heavy neutrino will be in an intermediate state on its mass shell. Discovery and exclusion limits for the heavy neutrinos are found using both Cut-and-Count (CC) and a Multi-Variate Analysis (MVA) methods in this study. We also show that it is possible to discriminate between a Dirac and a Majorana heavy neutrino, even when lepton number conservation cannot be directly tested due to unobservabilit…
The Weyl fermions with a well defined chirality are known to demand that the dimension of space which they inhabit must be odd. It is shown here, however, that not all odd dimensional spaces are equally good hosts: in particular, an arbitrary number of chiral Weyl fermions can acquire a Majorana mass only in three (modulo eight) dimensions. The argument utilizes a) the precise analogy that exists between the Majorana mass term and the Cooper pairing of time-reversed Weyl fermions, and b) the conditions on the requisite time-reversal operator, which are implied by the Clifford algebra. The theo…
Recently it has been shown that string instanton effects may give rise to neutrino Majorana masses in certain classes of semi-realistic string compactifications. In this paper we make a systematic search for supersymmetric MSSM-like Type II Gepner orientifold constructions admitting boundary states associated with instantons giving rise to neutrino Majorana masses and other L- and/or B-violating operators. We analyze the zero mode structure of D-brane instantons on general type II orientifold compactifications, and show that only instantons with O(1) symmetry can have just the two zero modes r…
We introduce a new effect in the neutrino oscillation phase which shows the neutrino-antineutrino oscillation is possible under gravity even if the rest masses of the corresponding eigenstates are same. This is due to CPT violation and possible to demonstrate if the neutrino mass eigenstates are expressed as a combination of neutrino and antineutrino eigenstates, as of the neutral kaon system, with the plausible breaking of lepton number conservation. For Majorana neutrinos, this oscillation is expected to affect significantly the inner edge of neutrino dominated accretion disks around a compa…
We discuss the potential to observe lepton number violation (LNV) in displaced vertex searches for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) at future lepton colliders. Even though a direct detection of LNV is impossible for the dominant production channel because lepton number is carried away by an unobservable neutrino, there are several signatures of LNV that can be searched for. They include the angular distribution and spectrum of decay products as well as the HNL lifetime. We comment on the perspectives to observe LNV in realistic neutrino mass models and argue that the dichotomy of Dirac vs Majorana…
The standard model of elementary interactions has long qualified as a theory of matter, in which the postulated conservation laws (one baryonic and three leptonic) acquire theoretical meaning. However, recent observations of lepton number violations -- neutrino oscillations -- demonstrate its incompleteness. We discuss why these considerations suggest the correctness of Ettore Majorana's ideas on the nature of neutrino mass, and add further interest to the search for an ultra-rare nuclear process in which two particles of matter (electrons) are created, commonly called neutrinoless double beta…
