The electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of SnSe are studied by first-principles methods. The inclusion of van der Waals dispersive corrections improves the agreement of structural parameters with experiments. The bands structure and projected density of states justify the macroscopic anisotropy exhibited by this system. An original methodology is used to estimate the chemical potential and the relaxation time for the electrical and thermal conductivities. Following this methodology, the Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity for single crystals and polycrystals are described in good agreement with experimental data. As for the electrical conductivity, values calculated with a temperature-dependent relaxation time compare well with available measurements, especially for single crystals, polycrystals are better described by a constant relaxation time. Finally, the figure of merit of SnSe single crystals and polycrystals is calculated. It is found to exhibit a maximum for some "ideal" carrier concentration, and might be noticeably enhanced by using carrier concentrations higher than the experimental ones. From these findings, possible strategies to increase the figure of merit in practise are suggested.
Lifshitz transition, a change in Fermi surface topology, is likely to greatly influence exotic correlated phenomena in solids, such as high-temperature superconductivity and complex magnetism. However, since the observation of Fermi surfaces is generally difficult in the strongly correlated systems, a direct link between the Lifshitz transition and quantum phenomena has been elusive so far. Here, we report a marked impact of the pressure-induced Lifshitz transition on thermoelectric performance for SnSe, a promising thermoelectric material without strong electron correlation. By applying press…
Black phosphorene and its analogs have attracted intensive attention due to their unique puckered structures, anisotropic characteristics, and negative Poisson's ratio. The van der Waals heterostructures assembly by stacking different materials may show novel physical properties which the parent materials don't possess. In this work, the first-principles calculations were performed to study the mechanical properties of the BP/SnSe van der Waals heterostructure. Interestingly, a near-zero Poisson's ratio vzx was found in BP/SnSe heterostructure. In addition, compared to the parent materials BP …
Electron-crystal and phonon-glass are regarded as two essential factors for ideal thermoelectric materials, which require both an enhanced electronic transport and a depressed phononic transport. These two characteristics usually can not coexist in complete bulk semiconductors because of the strong interaction between electrons and phonons. Introducing nanostructures into bulk thermoelectric materials has long been applying to allow for diverse phonon scattering mechanisms to reduce lattice thermal conductivity while keeping the electrical conductivity intact. However, some two-dimensional mat…
We present results of electronic band structure, Fermi surface and electron transport properties calculations in orthorhombic $n$- and $p$-type SnSe, applying Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and Boltzmann transport approach. The analysis accounted for temperature effect on crystallographic parameters in $Pnma$ structure as well as the phase transition to $CmCm$ structure at $T_c\sim 807 $K. Remarkable modifications of conduction and valence bands were notified upon varying crystallographic parameters within the structure before $T_c$, while the phase transition mostly leads to jump in the band g…
We theoretically investigate how each orbital and valley play a role for high thermoelectric performance of SnSe. In the hole-doped regime, two kinds of valence band valleys contribute to its transport properties: one is the valley near the U-Z line, mainly consisting of the Se-$p_z$ orbitals, and the other is the one along the $Γ$-Y line, mainly consisting of the Se-$p_y$ orbitals. Whereas the former valley plays a major role in determining the transport properties at room temperature, the latter one also offers comparable contribution and so the band structure exhibits multi-valley character…
SnSe monolayer with orthorhombic Pnma GeS structure is an important two-dimensional (2D) indirect band gap material at room temperature. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, we present systematic studies on the electronic and magnetic properties of X (X = Ga, In, As, Sb) atoms doped SnSe monolayer. The calculated electronic structures show that Ga-doped system maintains semiconducting property while In-doped SnSe monolayer is half-metal. The As- and Sb- doped SnSe systems present the characteristics of n-type semiconductor. Moreover, all considered substitutional d…
We conduct comprehensive investigations of both thermal and electrical transport properties of SnSe and SnS using first-principles calculations combined with the Boltzmann transport theory. Due to the distinct layered lattice structure, SnSe and SnS exhibit similarly anisotropic thermal and electrical behaviors. The cross-plane lattice thermal conductivity $κ_{L}$ is 40-60% lower than the in-plane values. Extremely low $κ_{L}$ is found for both materials because of high anharmonicity. It is suggested that nanostructuring would be difficult to further decrease $κ_{L}$ because of the short mean …
IV-VI semiconductor SnSe has been known as the material with record high thermoelectric performance. The multiple close-to-degenerate valence bands in the electronic band structure has been one of the key factors contributing to the high power factor and thus figure of merit in the SnSe single crystal. To date, there have been primarily theoretical calculations of this particular electronic band structure. In this paper, however, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we perform a systematic investigation of the electronic structure of SnSe. We directly observe three predicted hole ba…
Recent studies on different topological materials in condensed matter physics have provided the evidence of topological nature for bosonic particle like phonons by performing various theoretical calculations and experimental observations. Here, the topological behaviours of phonons of SnS, SnSe and SnTe materials in rock-salt structure are investigated using $ab$-$initio$ methodology. For all these materials, the tilted linear band touching is observed along with the presence of band inversion in direction X-W. The topological point in phonon dispersion curve along X-W direction is found to be…
The anharmonic phonon properties of SnSe in the Pnma phase were investigated with a combination of experiments and first-principles simulations. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (NRIXS), we have measured the phonon dispersions and density of states (DOS) and their temperature dependence, which revealed a strong, inhomogeneous shift and broadening of the spectrum on warming. First-principles simulations were performed to rationalize these measurements, and to explain the previously reported anisotropic thermal expansion, in particular the …
Two-dimensional (2D) materials may have potential applications in thermoelectric devices. In this work, we systematically investigate the thermoelectric properties of orthorhombic group IV-VI monolayers $\mathrm{AB}$ (A=Ge and Sn; B=S and Se) by the first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is included to investigate their electronic transport, which produces observable effects on power factor, especially for n-type doping. According to calculated $ZT$, the four monolayers exhibit diverse anisotropic thermoelectric properties, alt…
Efficient ab initio computational methods for the calculation of thermoelectric transport properties of materials are of great avail for energy harvesting technologies. The BoltzTraP code has been largely used to efficiently calculate thermoelectric coefficients. However, its current version that is publicly available is based only on the constant relaxation time (RT) approximation, which usually does not hold for real materials. Here, we extended the implementation of the BoltzTraP code by incorporating realistic k-dependent RT models of the temperature dependence of the main scattering proce…
SnS and SnSe are isoelectronic materials with a common phase diagram. Recently, SnSe was found to be the most efficient intrinsic thermoelectric material in its high-temperature Cmcm phase above 800 K. Making use of first-principles calculations, here we show that the electronic and vibrational properties of both materials are very similar in this phase and, consequently, SnS is also expected to have a high thermoelectric figure of merit at high temperature in its Cmcm phase. In fact, the electronic power factor and lattice thermal conductivity are comparable for both materials, which ensures …
The strong light-matter interaction in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is promising for nanoscale optoelectronics with their direct band gap nature and the ultra-fast radiative decay of the strongly bound excitons these materials host. However, the impeded amount of light absorption imposed by the ultra-thin nature of the monolayers impairs their viability in photonic applications. Using a layered heterostructure of a monolayer TMD stacked on top of strongly absorbing, non-luminescent, multi-layer SnSe2, we show that both single-photon and two-photon luminescence from the TMD…
Stable structures of layered SnS and SnSe and their associated electronic and vibrational spectra are predicted using first-principles DFT calculations. The calculations show that both materials undergo a phase transformation upon thinning whereby the in-plane lattice parameters converge to a pseudo-cubic phase, similar to the high-temperature behaviour observed for their bulk counterparts. The electronic properties of layered SnS and SnSe evolve to an almost symmetric dispersion whilst the gap changes from indirect to direct. Characteristic signatures in the phonon dispersion curves and surfa…
Thermoelectric materials create an electric potential when subject to a temperature gradient and vice versa hence they can be used to harvest waste heat into electricity and in thermal management applications. However, finding highly efficient thermoelectrics with high figures of merit, zT$\geq$1, is very challenging because the combination of high power factor and low thermal conductivity is rare in materials. Here, we use first-principles methods to analyze the thermoelectric properties of Li$_2$Sn$X_3$ ($X$=S,Se), a recently synthesized class of lithium fast-ion conductors presenting high t…
In this work from first-principles simulations we investigate bilayer van der Waals heterostructures (vdWh) of emerging 2-dimensional (2D) optical materials SnS 2 and SnSe 2 with monolayer InSe. With density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we study the structural, electronic, optical and carrier transport properties of the SnX 2 (X=S,Se)-InSe vdWh. Calculations show SnX 2 -InSe in its most stable stacking form (named AB-1) to be a material with a small (0.6- 0.7eV) indirect band-gap. The bilayer vdWh shows broad spectrum optical response, with number of peaks in the infra-red to visible …
A parameterized tight-binding (TB) model based on the first-principles GW calculations is developed for single layer tin diselenide (SnSe$_2$) and used to study its electronic and optical properties under external magnetic field. The truncated model is derived from six maximally localized wannier orbitals on Se site, which accurately describes the quasi-particle electronic states of single layer SnSe$_2$ in a wide energy range. The quasi-particle electronic states are dominated by the hoppings between nearest wannier orbitals ($t_1$-$t_6$). Our numerical calculation shows that, due to the elec…
Searching for the high-performance thermoelectric (TE) materials has always been a long-held dream in the thermoelectricity field. Recently, it is found in experiments that the largest figure of merit ZT of $2.6$ can be reached in SnSe crystals at 923 K and Cu2Se sample at 850 K, which arouses the enormous interest of seeking high-ZT materials. Based on first-principle calculations and Boltzman transport equation (BTE), we report in this letter that silver halides (AgCl and AgBr) in rocksalt structure have excellent TE performances. A superhigh ZT of about 7.0 at mid-temperature (~600K) is obt…
Promising High Temperature Thermoelectric Performance of Alkali Metal-based Zintl phases X$_2$AgY (X = Na, K; Y = Sb, Bi): Insights from First-Principles Studies
The enhancement of Gilbert damping observed for Ni80Fe20 (Py) films in contact with the non-magnetic metals Cu, Pd, Ta and Pt, is quantitatively reproduced using first-principles scattering theory. The "spin-pumping" theory that qualitatively explains its dependence on the Py thickness is generalized to include a number of factors known to be important for spin transport through interfaces. Determining the parameters in this theory from first-principles shows that interface spin-flipping makes an essential contribution to the damping enhancement. Without it, a much shorter spin-flip diffusion …
Thermoelectric effects, measured by the Seebeck coefficients, refer to the phenomena in which a temperature difference or gradient imposed across a thermoelectric material induces an electrical potential difference or gradient, and vice versa, enabling the direct conversion of thermal and electric energies. All existing understanding and first-principles calculations of Seebeck coefficients have been based on the Boltzmann kinetic transport theory. Here we demonstrate that the Seebeck coefficient is a well-defined thermodynamic quantity that can be determined from the change in the chemical po…
The local application of mechanical stress in piezoelectric materials gives rise to boundaries across which the electric polarization changes. Polarization charges appear along such polar discontinuities and the ensuing electric fields drive a charge reconstruction with the accumulation of free carriers at the boundaries. This is particularly relevant for two-dimensional materials that can sustain very large strains and display record piezoelectric responses. Here we show by first-principles simulations the emergence of one-dimensional wires of free electrons and holes along strain interfaces,…
In this study, we systematically study on crystal and electronic structures and optical absorption properties of perfect monolayer MoS2 (M), M with S vacancy (M@SV), M with N doping at S site (M@ND) and M with both S vacancy and N doping at S site (M@V-D) using first-principles method. It is showed that the N atom is tend to located between Mo and S layers, leaving one vacancy at original site, to form interstitial N atom. Thus, the interstitial N atom and the S vacancy make up the NI-VS dimer. We study M@V-D with five atomic configurations and find the most stable structure having the NI-VS-V…
Enhancement of the electronic thermoelectric properties of bulk strained silicon-germanium alloys using the scattering relaxation times from first principles
Based on first-principles density functional calculations, we show that SnS and SnSe layers can form mechanically rigid heterostructures with the constituent puckered or buckled monolayers. Due to the strong interlayer coupling, the electronic wavefunctions of the conduction and valence band edges are delocalized across the heterostructure. The resultant bandgap of the heterostructures reside in the infrared region. With strain engineering, the heterostructure bandgap undergoes transition from indirect to direct in the puckered phase. Our results show that there is a direct correlation between…
Thermoelectrics involves both the generation of electrical power from heat flow, and the efficient refrigeration using electricity, which has been intensively focused on for two decades. The performance of thermoelectric power generation and refrigeration has been improved by many proposals since 1993, which is, however, the currently not yet in an industrially competitive level. The development of the entire filed has come to a puzzling point, where the physical reason of why this energy conversion efficiency enhancing problem is barely soluble, and the physical answer of how it should be re-…
We report high-pressure photoluminescence, Raman scattering, and x-ray diffraction measurements on a lead-free halide perovskite $Cs_3Sb_2Br_9$. At about 3 GPa, an electronic transition manifests itself through a broad minimum in linewidth, a maximum in the intensity of $E_g$, $A_{1g}$ Raman modes, and the unusual change in the $c/a$ ratio of the trigonal lattice. The large compressibility and observed Raman anomalies indicate to a soft material with strong electron-phonon coupling. The observed below bandgap broadband emission in the photoluminescence measurement indicates the recombination o…
The simulations of field-evaporation processes for surface atoms on W(011) and Mo(011) surfaces are implemented using first-principles calculations based on the real-space finite-difference method. The threshold values of the external electric field for evaporation of the surface atoms, which are $\sim$ 6 V/Å2mm for tungsten and $\sim$ 5 V/Å2mm for molybdenum, are in agreement with the experimental results. Whereas field evaporation has been believed to occur as a result of significant local-field enhancement around the evaporating atoms, in this study, the enhancement is not observed around t…
We have performed first-principles calculations of Si/SiO$_2$ superlattices in order to examine their electronic states, confinement and optical transitions, using linearized-augmented-plane-wave techniques and density-functional theory. Two atomic models having fairly simple interface structure are considered; they differ in the way dangling bonds at interfaces are satisfied. We compare our first-principles band structures with those from tight-binding calculations. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function are calculated at the Fermi-Golden-rule level and used to estimate the a…
The field screening effect on the electronic and field-emission properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) has been studied using first-principles calculations. We have systematically investigated the effect of inter-ribbon distance and ribbon width on the work function, field enhancement factor, band gap and edge magnetism of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). It is found that the work function of ZGNRs increases rapidly as the inter-ribbon distance Dx increases, which is caused by the positive dipole at the edge of the ribbon. For a given Dx, the work function of ZGNRs decreases as …
In this work, we present a detailed theoretical investigation of the electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic slabs and clusters deposited on SrTiO$\_3$ via first-principles, with a particular emphasis on the magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA). We found that in the case of Fe films deposited on SrTiO$\_3$ the effect of the interface is to quench the MCA whereas for Cobalt we observe a change of sign of the MCA from in-plane to out-of-plane as compared to the free surface. We also find a strong enhancement of MCA for small clusters upon deposition on a SrTiO$\_3$ substrate. The hyb…
We use first-principles density-functional total energy and polarization calculations to calculate the piezoelectric tensor at zero temperature for both cubic and simple tetragonal ordered supercells of Pb_3GeTe_4. The largest piezoelectric coefficient for the tetragonal configuration is enhanced by a factor of about three with respect to that of the cubic configuration. This can be attributed to both the larger strain-induced motion of cations relative to anions and higher Born effective charges in the tetragonal case. A normal mode decomposition shows that both cation ordering and local rela…
Monte Carlo simulations based on a first-principles-derived Hamiltonian are conducted to study the properties of PZT alloys compositionally modulated along the [100] pseudocubic direction near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). It is shown that compositional modulation causes the polarization to continuously rotate away from the modulation direction, resulting in the unusual triclinic and C-type monoclinic ground states and huge enhancement of electromechanical responses (the peak of piezoelectric coefficient is as high as 30000 pC/N). The orientation dependence of dipole-dipole interactio…
Motivated by interest in the elastic properties of high strength amorphous metals, we examine the elastic properties of select crystalline phases. Using first principles methods, we calculate elastic moduli in various chemical systems containing transition metals, specifically early (Ta,W) and late (Co,Ni). Theoretically predicted alloy elastic properties are verified for Ni-Ta by comparison with experimental measurements using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Comparison of our computed elastic moduli with effective medium theories shows that alloying leads to enhancement of bulk moduli relat…
Enhancement of magnetism of Fe that occurs by alloying with Cr or V is discussed on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculation. The d states of Fe next to Cr(V) are pushed down to the lower energy side compared to those of pure Fe due to the hybridization with Cr(V) d states, which leads a Co-like electronic structure for the Fe atom. This enhances magnetic moments of other Fe atoms and also the exchange couplings among them. The same mechanism works as well for the magnetism of Fe/Cr heterostructures. The idea is extended to design of a new type of antiferromagnets with hi…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is a key property of magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM). To increase areal density of MRAM it is important to find a way to enhance the PMA. Recently a strong enhancement of the PMA by inserting an ultrathin LiF layer at an Fe/MgO interface was reported [T. Nozaki et al., NPG Asia Materials (2022) 14: 5]. To understand the origin of the observed enhancement of the PMA we perform first-principles calculations of magetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of the following four kind of multilayer structures: Fe/MgO, Fe/LiF/MgO, Fe/FeO/MgO, and Fe/F…
Using a combination of first-principles theory and experiments, we provide a quantitative explanation for chemical contributions to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for a well-studied organic molecule, benzene thiol, chemisorbed on planar Au(111) surfaces. With density functional theory calculations of the static Raman tensor, we demonstrate and quantify a strong mode-dependent modification of benzene thiol Raman spectra by Au substrates. Raman active modes with the largest enhancements result from stronger contributions from Au to their electron-vibron coupling, as quantified through a def…
The effects of Li doping in MgH$_2$ on H-diffusion process are investigated, using first-principles calculations. We have identified two key effects: (1) The concentration of H vacancy in the $+1$ charge state (V$_H^{+1}$) can increase by several orders of magnitude upon Li doping, which significantly increases the vacancy mediated H diffusion rate. It is caused by the preferred charge states of substitutional Li in the $-1$ state (Li$_{Mg}^{-1}$) and of interstitial Li in the $+1$ state (Li$_i^{+1}$), which indirectly reduce the formation energy of V$_H^{+1}$ by up to 0.39 eV depending on the…
The Fermi surface topology of $cI$16 Li at high pressures is studied using a recently developed first-principles unfolding method. We find the occurrence of a Lifshitz transition at $\sim$43 GPa, which explains the experimentally observed anomalous onset of the superconductivity enhancement toward lowered pressure. Furthermore we identify, in comparison with previous reports, additional nesting vectors that contribute to the $cI$16 structural stability. Our study highlights the importance of three-dimensional unfolding analyses for first-principles studies of Fermi surface topologies and insta…
Based on first-principles calculations, we predict a substantial increase in the optical dielectric function of LiAsSe$_2$ under pressure. We find that the optical dielectric constant is enhanced threefold under volume compression. This enhancement is mainly due to the dimerization strength reduction of the one-dimensional (1D) As--Se chains in LiAsSe$_2$, which significantly alters the wavefunction phase mismatch between two neighboring chains and changes the transition intensity. By developing a tight-binding model of the interacting 1D chains, the essential features of the low-energy electr…
We elucidate the microscopic mechanism that causes a suppression of ferroelectricity and an enhancement of octahedral rotations in EuTiO3 from first principles. We find that the hybridization of the rare-earth Eu 4f states with the B-site Ti cation drives the system away from ferroelectricity. We also show that the magnetic order dependence of this hybridization is the dominant source of spin-phonon coupling in this material. Our results underline the importance of rare-earth f electrons on the lattice dynamics and stability of these transition metal oxides.
LiOsO$_3$ undergoes a continuous transition from a centrosymmetric $R\bar{3}c$ structure to a polar $R3c$ structure at $T_s=140$~K. By combining transport measurements and first-principles calculations, we find that $T_s$ is enhanced by applied pressure, and it reaches a value of $\sim$250~K at $\sim$6.5~GPa. The enhancement is due to the fact that the polar $R3c$ structure of LiOsO$_3$ has a smaller volume than the centrosymmetric $R\bar{3}c$ structure. Pressure generically favors the structure with the smallest volume, and therefore further stabilizes the polar $R3c$ structure over the $R\ba…
Using first principles density functional theory calculations, we show a semimetal to semiconducting electronic phase transition for bulk TiS 2 by applying uniform biaxial tensile strain. This electronic phase transition is triggered by charge transfer from Ti to S, which eventually reduces the overlap between Ti-(d) and S-(p) orbitals. The electronic transport calculations show a large anisotropy in electrical conductivity and thermopower, which is due to the difference in the effective masses along the in-plane and out of plane directions. Strain induced opening of band gap together with cha…
We carry out first-principles calculations for CaTiO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$ superlattices with epitaxial strain corresponding to growth on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate, and consider octahedral rotations as well as ferroelectric distortions. The calculations are done as a function of electric displacement field, and both a macroscopic and a local electrostatic analysis are carried out. We find that strong octahedral rotations occur for TiO$_6$ octahedra sandwiched between CaO layers on both sides, but are strongly suppressed if either neighboring layer is a BaO layer. Due to the resulting enhancement of the fe…
Using a first-principles approach based on density-functional theory, we find that a large tetragonal strain can be induced in PbTiO3 by application of a negative hydrostatic pressure. The structural parameters and the dielectric and dynamical properties are found to change abruptly near a crossover pressure, displaying a ``kinky'' behavior suggestive of proximity to a phase transition. Analogous calculations for BaTiO3 show that the same effect is also present there, but at much higher negative pressure. We investigate this unexpected behavior of PbTiO3 and discuss an interpretation involving…
We present results of local spin density approximation (LSDA) pseudopotential calculations for the perovskite structure oxide, bismuth manganite (BiMnO3). The origin of the differences between bismuth manganite and other perovskite manganites is determined by first calculating total energies and band structures of the high symmetry cubic phase, then sequentially lowering the magnetic and structural symmetry. Our results indicate that covalent bonding between bismuth cations and oxygen anions stabilizes different magnetic and structural phases compared with the rare earth manganites. This is co…
The interaction between screw dislocations and oxygen interstitial atoms is studied with ab initio calculations in hexagonal close-packed titanium. Our calculations evidence a strong repulsion when the solute atoms are located in the dislocation glide plane, leading to spontaneous cross-slip, which allows the dislocation to bypass the atomic obstacle. This avoidance process explains several experimental observations in titanium in presence of oxygen: (1) a larger lattice friction against screw dislocation motion, (2) a reduction of the dislocation glide distance in prismatic planes and (3) an …
We develop a method for calculating the electron-phonon vertex in polar semiconductors and insulators from first principles. The present formalism generalizes the Fröhlich vertex to the case of anisotropic materials and multiple phonon branches, and can be used either as a post-processing correction to standard electron-phonon calculations, or in conjunction with {\it ab initio} interpolation based on maximally localized Wannier functions. We demonstrate this formalism by investigating the electron-phonon interactions in anatase TiO$_2$, and show that the polar vertex significantly reduces the…
Motivated by the recent discovery of a large anomalous Nernst effect in Co$_2$MnGa, Fe$_3X$ ($X$=Al, Ga) and Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, we performed a first-principles study to clarify the origin of the enhancement of the transverse thermoelectric conductivity ($α_{ij}$) in these ferromagnets. The intrinsic contribution to $α_{ij}$ can be understood in terms of the Berry curvature ($Ω$) around the Fermi level, and $Ω$ is singularly large along nodal lines (which are gapless in the absence of the spin-orbit coupling) in the Brillouin zone. We find that not only the Weyl points but also stationary point…
Motivated by the recent successful synthesis of biphenylene structure [Science 372, (2021), 852], we have explored the sensing properties of this material towards the catechol biomolecule by performing the first-principles density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations. Pristine biphenylene sheet adsorbs catechol molecule with a binding energy of -0.35 eV, which can be systematically improved by decorating the transition metals (Ag, Au, Pd, and Ti) at various possible sites of biphenylene. It is observed that the catechol molecule is adsorbed on Pd and Ti-decorated biphenylene sh…
