We study the static and dynamic interaction between a horizontal cylindrical nano-probe and a thin liquid film. The effects of the physical and geometrical parameters, with a special focus on the film thickness, the probe speed, and the distance between the probe and the free surface are analyzed. Deformation profiles have been computed numerically from a Reynolds lubrication equation, coupled to a modified Young-Laplace equation, which takes into account the probe/liquid and the liquid/substrate non-retarded van der Waals interactions. We have found that the film thickness and the probe speed have a significant effect on the threshold separation distance below which the jump-to-contact instability is triggered. These results encourage the use of horizontal cylindrical nano-probes to scan thin liquid films, in order to determine either the physical or geometrical properties of the latter, through the measurement of interaction forces.
We studied the van der Waals interactions of two finite, solid, cylindrical rods at arbitrary angle and position with respect to each other. An analytic interpolative formula for the interaction potential energy is constructed, based on various asymptotic cases. The potential can be readily used for numerical and analytic description of multi-wall carbon nanotubes, metallic nanorods, rod-shaped colloids, or any other similar objects with significant van der Waals interactions.
We show that the usual sum of $R^{-6}$ contributions from elements separated by distance $R$ can give \emph{qualitatively} wrong results for the electromagnetically non-retarded van der Waals interaction between non-overlapping bodies. This occurs for anisotropic nanostructures that have a zero electronic energy gap, such as nanowires, conducting nanotubes, and nano-layered systems including metals and graphene planes. In all these cases our analytic microscopic calculations give an interaction falling off with a power of separation different from the conventional value. We discuss implication…
Using a unified macroscopic QED formalism, we derive an integral equation for the van der Waals energy of a two-level atomic system near a carbon nanotube. The equation is valid for both strong and weak atom-vacuum-field coupling. By solving it numerically, we demonstrate the inapplicability of weak-coupling-based van der Waals interaction models in a close vicinity of the nanotube surface.
We have synthesized unique colloidal nanoplatelets of the ferromagnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals material CrI3 and have characterized these nanoplatelets structurally, magnetically, and by magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. The isolated CrI3 nanoplatelets have lateral dimensions of ~25 nm and ensemble thicknesses of only ~4 nm, corresponding to just a few CrI3 monolayers. Magnetic and magneto-optical measurements demonstrate robust 2D ferromagnetic ordering in these nanoplatelets with Curie temperatures similar to those observed in bulk CrI3, despite the strong spatial confine…
Interplay between structure and function in atomically thin crystalline nanoribbons is sensitive to their conformations yet the ability to prescribe them is a formidable challenge. Here, we report a novel paradigm for controlled nucleation and growth of scrolled and folded shapes in finite-length nanoribbons. All-atom computations on graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and experiments on macroscale magnetic thin films reveal that decreasing the end distance of torsionally constrained ribbons below their contour length leads to formation of these shapes. The energy partitioning between twisted and bent…
We present investigate the self assembly and growth of an array of $CdS$ nanotubes: a consequence of a fine balance of directed motion, diffusion and aggregation of reacting ${\rm Cd^{+2}}$ and ${\rm S^{-2}}$ ions. In a previous communication [J. Kiruthiga, A. Chatterji, J. Chem. Phys., {\bf 138} 024905 (2013)], we identified the mechanism of a unexpected growth of a very uniform $CdS$ nano-cylinder from the end of a nano-channel. Furthermore, the cylinder had a pore along the axis but were closed at one end. This unique phenomenon of self assembly of {\em monodisperse} CdS nano-cylinders had …
The van der Waals interactions between two parallel graphitic nanowiggles (GNWs) are calculated using the coupled dipole method (CDM). The CDM is an efficient and accurate approach to determine such interactions explicitly by taking into account the discrete atomic structure. Our findings show that the van der Waals forces vary from attraction to repulsion as nanoribbons move along their lengths with respect to each other. This feature leads to a number of stable and unstable positions of the system during the movement process. These positions can be tuned by changing the length of GNW. Moreov…
Tellurium can form nanowires of helical atomic chains. Given their unique one-dimensional van der Waals structure, these nanowires are expected to show remarkably different physical and electronic properties than bulk tellurium. Here we show that few-chain and single-chain van der Waals tellurium nanowires can be isolated using carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube encapsulation. With the approach, the number of atomic chains can be controlled by the inner diameter of the nanotube. The Raman response of the structures suggests that the interaction between a single-atomic tellurium chain a…
Stability of magnetic vortex with respect to displacement of its center in a nano-scale circular cylinder made of soft ferromagnetic material is studied theoretically. The mode of vortex displacement producing no magnetic charges on the cylinder side is proposed and the corresponding absolute single-domain radius of the cylinder is calculated as a function of its thickness and the exchange length of the material. In cylinders with the radii less than the single-domain radius the vortex state is unstable and is absolutely prohibited (except if pinned by material imperfections), so that the dist…
The electrical detection of the surface states of topological insulators is strongly impeded by the interference of bulk conduction, which commonly arises due to pronounced doping associated with the formation of lattice defects. As exemplified by the topological insulator Bi2Te2Se, we show that via van der Waals epitaxial growth on thin hBN substrates the structural quality of such nanoplatelets can be substantially improved. The surface state carrier mobility of nanoplatelets on hBN is increased by a factor of about 3 compared to platelets on conventional Si/SiOx substrates, which enables th…
We study the interaction energy between two graphene nanoribbons by first principles calculations, including van der Waals interactions and spin polarization. For ultranarrow zigzag nanoribbons, the direct stacking is even more stable than Bernal, competing in energy for wider ribbons. This behavior is due to the magnetic interaction between edge states. We relate the reduction of the magnetization in zigzag nanoribbons with increasing ribbon width to the structural changes produced by the magnetic interaction, and show that when deposited on a substrate, zigzag bilayer ribbons remain magnetic…
Nanobelts, nanoribbons and other quasi-one-dimensional nanostructures formed from layered, so-called, van der Waals semiconductors have garnered much attention due to their high-performance, tunable optoelectronic properties. For layered alloys made from the gallium monochalcogenides GaS, GaSe, and GaTe, near-continuous tuning of the energy bandgap across the full composition range has been achieved in GaSe1-xSx and GaSe1-xTex alloys. Gold-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth of these alloys yields predominantly nanobelts, nanoribbons and other nanostructures for which the fast crystal gr…
van der Waals nanomaterials supporting phonon polariton quasiparticles possess unprecedented light confinement capabilities, making them ideal systems for molecular sensing, thermal emission, and subwavelength imaging applications, but they require defect-free crystallinity and nanostructured form factors to fully showcase these capabilities. We introduce bottom-up-synthesized α-MoO3 structures as nanoscale phonon polaritonic systems that feature tailorable morphologies and crystal qualities consistent with bulk single crystals. α-MoO3 nanoribbons serve as low-loss hyperbolic Fabry-Pérot nanor…
Heterostructures play significant roles in modern semiconductor devices and micro/nanosystems in a plethora of applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and transducers. While state-of-the-art heterostructures often involve stacks of crystalline epi-layers each down to a few nanometers thick, the intriguing limit would be heterto-atomic-layer structures. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of freestanding van der Waals heterostructures and their functional nanomechanical devices. By stacking single-layer (1L) MoS2 on top of suspended single-, bi-, tri- and four-layer (1L to…
Excitons dominate the optics of atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenides and 2D van der Waals heterostructures. Interlayer 2D excitons, with an electron and a hole residing in different layers, form rapidly in heterostructures either via direct charge transfer or via Coulomb interactions that exchange energy between layers. Here, we report prominent intertube excitonic effects in quasi-1D van der Waals heterostructures consisting of C/BN/MoS$_2$ core/shell/skin nanotubes. Remarkably, under pulsed infrared excitation of excitons in the semiconducting CNTs we observed a rapid (sub-picose…
We report results of investigation of the low-frequency electronic excess noise in quasi-1D nanowires of TaSe3 capped with quasi-2D h-BN layers. Semi-metallic TaSe3 is a quasi-1D van der Waals material with exceptionally high breakdown current density. It was found that TaSe3 nanowires have lower levels of the normalized noise spectral density, compared to carbon nanotubes and graphene. The temperature-dependent measurements revealed that the low-frequency electronic 1/f noise becomes the 1/f^2-type as temperature increases to about 400 K, suggesting the onset of electromigration (f is the fre…
In van der Waals heterostructures, the periodic potential from the Moiré superlattice can be used as a control knob to modulate the electronic structure of the constituent materials. Here we present a nanoscale angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (Nano-ARPES) study of transferred graphene/h-BN heterostructures with two different stacking angles of 2.4° and 4.3° respectively. Our measurements reveal six replicas of graphene Dirac cones at the superlattice Brillouin zone (SBZ) centers. The size of the SBZ and its relative rotation angle to the graphene BZ are in good agreement with Moiré s…
The van der Walls interaction between a carbon nanotubes sheet (CNTS) and a rare gas atom, is studied using both atomistic and continuum approaches. We present analytical expressions for the van der Waals energy of continuous nanotubes interacting with a rare gas atom. It is found that the continuum approach dose not properly treat the effect of atomistic configurations on the energy surfaces. The energy barriers are small as compared to the thermal energy, which implies the free motion above the CNTS in heights about one nanometer. In contrast to the energy surface of a graphene sheet, the ho…
We study the van der Waals interaction of a metallic or narrow-gap semiconducting nanowire with a surface, in the regime of intermediate wire-surface distances $(v_{F}/c)L \ll d \ll L $ or $L \ll d \ll (c/v_{F})L $, where $L$ is the nanowire length, $d$ is the distance to the surface, and $v_{F}$ is the characteristic velocity of nanowire electrons (for a metallic wire, it is the Fermi velocity). Our approach, based on the Luttinger liquid framework, allows one to analyze the dependence of the interaction on the interplay between the nanowire length, wire-surface distance, and characteristic l…
Understanding thermal transport through nanoscale van der Waals interfaces is vital for addressing thermal management challenges in nanoelectronic devices. In this work, the interfacial thermal conductance (GCA) between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanoribbons is reported to be on the order of 10^5 Wm-2K-1 at 300 K, which is over two orders of magnitude lower than the value predicted by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for a perfectly smooth interface between two parallelly aligned CuPc nanoribbons. Further MD simulations and contact mechanics analysis reveal that surface roughness can sign…
We study the behaviour of the non-retarded van der Waals force between a planar substrate and a single-walled carbon nanotube, assuming that the system is immersed in a liquid medium which exerts hydrostatic pressure on the tube's surface, thereby altering its cross-section profile. The shape of the latter is described as a continual structure characterized by its symmetry index $n$. Two principle mutual positions of the tube with respect to the substrate are studied: when one keeps constant the minimal separation between the surfaces of the interacting objects; when the distance from the tube…
Can C60 layer cover a surface of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) forming an exohedral pure-carbon hybrid with only VdW interactions? The paper addresses this question and demonstrates that the fullerene shell layer in such a bucky-corn structure can be stable. Theoretical study of structure, stability and electronic properties of the following bucky-corn hybrids is reported: C60 and C70 molecules on an individual SWCNT, C60 dimers on an individual SWCNT as well C60 molecules on SWNT bundles. The geometry and total energies of the bucky-corns were calculated by the molecular dynamics method…
The science and applications of electronics and optoelectronics have been driven for decades by progress in growth of semiconducting heterostructures. Many applications in the infrared and terahertz frequency range exploit transitions between quantized states in semiconductor quantum wells (intersubband transitions). However, current quantum well devices are limited in functionality and versatility by diffusive interfaces and the requirement of lattice-matched growth conditions. Here, we introduce the concept of intersubband transitions in van der Waals quantum wells and report their first exp…
We study mechanically exfoliated nanosheets of franckeite by quantitative optical microscopy. The analysis of transmission mode and epi-illumination mode optical microscopy images provides a rapid method to estimate the thickness of the exfoliated flakes at first glance. A quantitative analysis of the optical contrast spectra by means of micro-reflectance allows one to determine the refractive index of franckeite in a broad range of the visible spectrum through a fit of the acquired spectra to a Fresnel law based model.
We use an ab-initio approach to design and study a novel two-dimensional material - a planar array of carbon nanotubes separated by an optimal distance defined by the van der Waals interaction. We show that the energy spectrum for an array of quasi-metallic nanotubes is described by a strongly anisotropic hyperbolic dispersion and formulate a model low-energy Hamiltonian for its semi-analytical treatment. Periodic-potential-induced lifting of the valley degeneracy for an array of zigzag narrow-gap nanotubes leads to the band gap collapse. In contrast, the band gap is opened in an array of gapl…
We describe the low-frequency current fluctuations, i.e. electronic noise, in quasi-one-dimensional ZrTe3 van der Waals nanoribbons, which have recently attracted attention owing to their extraordinary high current carrying capacity. Whereas the low-frequency noise spectral density reveals 1/f behavior near room temperature, it is dominated by the Lorentzian bulges of the generation - recombination noise at low temperatures (f is the frequency). Unexpectedly, the corner frequency of the observed Lorentzian peaks shows strong sensitivity to the applied source - drain bias. This dependence on el…
The weak interlayer coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets has confined their application to two dimensional (2D) spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate that the interlayer coupling in a vdW magnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT) can be largely modulated by a protonic gate. With the increase of the protons intercalated among vdW layers, interlayer magnetic coupling increases.Because of the existence of antiferromagnetic layers in FGT nanoflakes, the increasing interlayer magnetic coupling induces exchange bias in protonated FGT nanoflakes. Most strikingly, a rarely seen zero-field cooled (ZFC) exchange …
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the surface vibrational modes of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Using high-resolution helium-3 spin-echo spectroscopy we are able to resolve the acoustic phonon modes of Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111). The low energy region of the lattice vibrations is mainly dominated by the Rayleigh mode which has been claimed to be absent in previous experimental studies. The appearance of the Rayleigh mode is consistent with previous bulk lattice dynamics studies as well as theoretical predictions of the surface phonon modes. Density functional pertur…
Pursuing the confinement of linearly dispersive relativistic fermions is of interest in both fundamental physics and potential applications. Here, we report strong STM evidence for the equally spaced, strikingly sharp, and densely distributed quantum well states (QWSs) near Fermi energy in Pb(111) nanoislands, van-der-Waals epitaxially grown on graphitized 6H-SiC(0001). The observations can be explained as the quantized energies of confined linearly dispersive [111] electrons, which essentially 'simulate' the out-of-plane relativistic quasiparticles. The equally spaced QWSs with an origin of c…

We investigate the geometry, stability, electronic structure and optical properties of C24H12 coronenes encapsulated in a single-wall (19,0) carbon nanotube. By an adequate combination of advanced electronic-structure techniques, involving weak and van derWaals interaction, as well as many-body effects for establishing electronic properties and excitations, we have accurately characterized this hybrid carbon nanostructure, which arises as a promising candidate for opto-electronic nanodevices. In particular, we show that the structure of the stacked coronenes inside the nanotube is characterize…
Designer heterostructures can now be assembled layer-by-layer with unmatched precision thanks to the recently developed deterministic placement methods to transfer two-dimensional (2D) materials. This possibility constitutes the birth of a very active research field on the so-called van der Waals heterostructures. Moreover, these deterministic placement methods also open the door to fabricate complex devices, which would be otherwise very difficult to achieve by conventional bottom-up nanofabrication approaches, and to fabricate fully-encapsulated devices with exquisite electronic properties. …
We derive the complete form of the van der Waals dispersion interaction between two infinitely long anisotropic semiconducting/insulating thin cylinders at all separations. The derivation is based on the general theory of dispersion interactions between anisotropic media as formulated in [J. N. Munday, D. Iannuzzi, Yu. S. Barash and F. Capasso, {\sl Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 71}, 042102 (2005)]. This formulation is then used to calculate the dispersion interactions between a pair of single walled carbon nanotubes at all separations and all angles. Non-retarded and retarded forms of the interactions a…
Van der Waals heterostructures have recently been identified as providing many opportunities to create new two-dimensional materials, and in particular to produce materials with topologically interesting states. Here we show that it is possible to create such heterostructures with multiple topological phases in a single nanoscale island. We discuss their growth within the framework of diffusion-limited aggregation, the formation of moiré patterns due to the differing crystallographies of the materials comprising the heterostructure, and the potential to engineer both the electronic structure a…
We conducted a tip-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (TERS) and photoluminescence (PL) study of quasi-1D TaSe3 nanoribbons exfoliated onto gold substrates. At a selenium deficiency of ~0.25 (Se/Ta=2.75,), the nanoribbons exhibit a strong, broad PL peak centered around ~920 nm (1.35 eV), suggesting their semiconducting behavior. Such nanoribbons revealed a strong TERS response under 785-nm laser excitation, allowing for their nanoscale spectroscopic imaging. Nanoribbons with a smaller selenium deficiency of ~0.15 (Se/Ta=2.85) did not show any PL or TERS response. The confocal Raman spectra…
Electromagnetic field confinement is crucial for nanophotonic technologies, since it allows for enhancing light-matter interactions, thus enabling light manipulation in deep sub-wavelength scales. In the terahertz (THz) spectral range, radiation confinement is conventionally achieved with specially designed metallic structures - such as antennas or nanoslits - with large footprints due to the rather long wavelengths of THz radiation. In this context, phonon polaritons - light coupled to lattice vibrations - in van der Waals (vdW) crystals have emerged as a promising solution for controlling li…
Nano-magnetic systems of artificially shaped ferromagnetic islands, recently became a popular subject due to their current and potential applications in spintronics, magneto-photonics and superconductivity. When the island size is close to the exchange length of magnetic material (around 15 nm), its magnetic structure becomes markedly different. It determines both static and dynamic magnetic properties of elements, but strongly depends on their shape and size. Here we map this dependence for circular cylindrical islands of a few exchange lengths in size. We outline the region of metastability …
We study the binding energy, intertube distance and electronic structure of bundles consisting of single walled carbon nanotubes of the same chirality. We model various nanotube structures (chiralities) and orientations with van der Waals density functional theory. The orientation of the tubes in the bundle strongly influences the properties of the bundles if the chirality of the tubes shares symmetry with the trigonal bundle structure, meaning chiralities which have a $60^\circ$-rotational symmetry (C$_6$-axis), e.g. ($12,0$) bundles. The bundle structure breaks the symmetry depending on the …
The bridge between quantum vacuum photon modes and properties of patterned surfaces is currently being established on solid theoretical grounds. Based on these foundations, the manipulation of quantum vacuum photon modes in a nanostructured cavity is theoretically shown to be able to turn the Lifshitz-van der Waals forces from attractive to repulsive regime. Since this concept relies on surface nanopatterning instead of chemical composition changes, it drastically relaxes the usual conditions for achieving repulsive Lifshitz-van der Waals forces. As a case study, the potential interaction ener…
We report on an experimental study of the effect of coherent surface-bulk electron scattering on quantum transport in a three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ nanoplate. The nanoplate is grown via van der Waals epitaxy on a mica substrate and a top-gated Hall-bar device is fabricated from the nanoplate directly on the growth substrate. Top-gate voltage dependent measurements of the sheet resistance of the device reveal that the transport carriers in the nanoplate are of n-type and that, with decreasing top gate voltage, the carrier density in the nanoplate is decreased. However, …
We develop a quantum theory of near-field electrodynamical properties of carbon nanotubes and investigate spontaneous decay dynamics of excited states and van der Waals attraction of the ground state of an atomic system close to a single-wall nanotube surface. Atomic spontaneous decay exhibits vacuum-field Rabi oscillations -- a principal signature of strong atom-vacuum-field coupling. The strongly coupled atomic state is nothing but a 'quasi-1D cavity polariton'. Its stability is mainly determined by the atom-nanotube van der Waals interaction. Our calculations of the ground-state atom van de…
Spatial variation in the superconducting order parameter becomes significant when the system is confined at dimensions well below the typical superconducting coherence length. Motivated by recent experimental success in growing single-crystal metallic nanorods, we study quantum confinement effects on superconductivity in a cylindrical nanowire in the clean limit. For large diameters, where the transverse level spacing is smaller than superconducting order parameter, the usual approximations of Ginzburg-Landau theory are recovered. However, under external magnetic field the order parameter deve…
The electron transport in a four-terminal nanodevice consisting of two crossed nanotubes is investigated in the framework of the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. The evident formula for the ballistic conductance of the device is found using a model of crossed conductive cylinders with a point contact between them. Sharp conductance dips stipulated by resonance scattering on the contact are shown to appear in the conductance of the first cylinder. The conductance between the cylinders has resonant behavior. The form and the position of resonant peaks are studied. Our results indicate that the form …
We have investigated atom-nanotube van der Waals (vdW) coupling in atomically doped carbon nanotubes (CNs). Our approach is based on the perturbation theory for degenerated atomic levels, thus accounting for both weak and strong atom-vacuum-field coupling. The vdW energy is described by an integral equation represented in terms of the local photonic density of states (DOS). By solving it numerically, we demonstrate the inapplicability of standard weak-coupling-based vdW interaction models in a close vicinity of the CN surface where the local photonic DOS effectively increases, giving rise to a…
Phonon polaritons (PhPs),light coupled to lattice vibrations, with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion exhibit ray-like propagation with large wavevectors and enhanced density of optical states along certain directions on a surface. As such, they have raised a surge of interest as they promise unprecedented possibilities for the manipulation of infrared light with planar circuitry and at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the focusing of in-plane hyperbolic PhPs propagating along thin slabs of MoO3. To that end, we developed metallic nanoantennas of convex geometries for both t…
Van der Waals materials and heterostructures manifesting strongly bound room temperature exciton states exhibit emergent physical phenomena and are of a great promise for optoelectronic applications. Here, we demonstrate that nanostructured multilayer transition metal dichalcogenides by themselves provide an ideal platform for excitation and control of excitonic modes, paving the way to exciton-photonics. Hence, we show that by patterning the TMDCs into nanoresonators, strong dispersion and avoided crossing of excitons and hybrid polaritons with interaction potentials exceeding 410 meV may be …
Like silicon-based semiconductor devices, van der Waals heterostructures will require integration with high-K oxides. This is needed to achieve suitable voltage scaling, improved performance as well as allowing for added functionalities. Unfortunately, commonly used high-k oxide deposition methods are not directly compatible with 2D materials. Here we demonstrate a method to embed a multi-functional few nm thick high-k oxide within van der Waals devices without degrading the properties of the neighbouring 2D materials. This is achieved by in-situ laser oxidation of embedded few layer HfS2 crys…
