We study analytically and numerically the interaction potentials between a pair of quark an anti-quark on D3, M2 and M5 branes. These potentials are obtained using Maldacena's method involving Wilson loops and present confining and non-confining behaviours in different situations that we explore in this work. In particular, at the near horizon geometry the potentials are non-confining in agreement with conformal field theory expectations. On the other side, far from horizon, the dual field theories are no longer conformal and the potentials present confinement. This is in agreement with the behaviour of strings in flat space where the string mimics the expected flux tube of QCD. A study of the transition between the confining/non-confining regimes in the three different scenarios (D3, M2, M5) is also performed.
We examine the effects of instantons in four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory by including D0-branes in type IIA brane constructions. We examine instanton generated superpotentials in supersymmetric QCD and find that they are due to a repulsive force between D4-branes bound to D0-branes ending on NS 5-branes. We study situations where instanton effects break supersymmetry such as the Intriligator-Thomas-Izawa-Yangagida model and relate this to a IIA brane construction. We also argue how confinement due to a condensate of fractional instantons manifests itself in Super Yang-Mills the…
A non-perturbative confinement mechanism has been proposed to explain the fate of the unbroken gauge group on the world-volume of annihilating D-brane-anti-D-brane pairs. In this paper, we examine this phenomenon closely from several different perspectives. Existence of the confinement mechanism is most easily seen by noticing that the fundamental string emerges as the confined electric flux string at the end of the annihilation process. After reviewing the confinement proposal in general, this is shown explicitly in the D2-anti-D2 case in the M-theory limit. Finally, we address the crucial is…
We study the static quantum potential for a theory of anti-symmetric tensor fields that results from the condensation of topological defects, within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Our calculations show that the interaction energy is the sum of a Yukawa and a linear potentials, leading to the confinement of static probe charges.
The time dependent formation of an electric flux tube (fundamental string) is reviewed. The main tool used for analysis is the Spacelike brane, which is a kink in time of the rolling tachyon. Both the S-brane and rolling tachyon are attempts to extend the D-brane concept to time dependent backgrounds. While S-branes are similar to Euclidean counterparts of the more familiar timelike D-branes, S-branes can smoothly change their worldvolume signature from spacelike to timelike which we interpret as the formation of a topological defect.
We review our recent work on the low-energy actions and the realizations of strong-weak coupling dualities in non-perturbative phases of compact antisymmetric tensor field theories due to p-brane condensation. As examples we derive and discuss the confining string and confining membrane actions obtained from compact vector and tensor theories in 4D. We also mention the relevance of our results for the description of the Hagedorn phase transition of finite temperature strings.
In this manuscript we study the confinement of bosonic and spinning test particles in smooth Randall-Sundrum models. For this, we show that it is possible to find an effective potential which describe the motion of the particle over the extra dimension. For the bosonic case it is a known fact that free test particles cannot be localized neither in thin nor thick branes. Recently, a coupling to a scalar field has been used to localize a limited range of masses. Up to now, no mechanism has been found that can trap test particles of any mass over the brane. To solve this, we show that a coupling …
We compute the holographic quark potential in the realm of brane cosmology. We show that under certain conditions the very geometry due to an inflationary 3-brane induces a D3-D7-brane system. The cosmological constant that appears involved in the original geometry is attributed to the D7-brane position itself in its embedding process. We address the issues of confinement at low distances, screening effects at sufficiently large distances, and quark condensate.
Confinement and Screening are investigated in SUSY gauge theories, realized by an M5 brane configuration, extending an approach applied previously to N=1 SYM theory, to other models. The electric flux tubes are identified as M2 branes ending on the M5 branes and the conserved charge they carry is identified as a topological property. The group of charges carried by the flux tubes is calculated and the results agree in all cases considered with the field theoretical expectations. In particular, whenever the dynamical matter is expected to screen the confining force, this is reproduced correctly…
We present a worldvolume effective action suitable for the study of the confined phase of a Dp-anti-Dp system at weak coupling. We identify the mechanism by which the fundamental string arises from this action as a confined electric flux string when the Dp and the anti-Dp annihilate. We construct an explicit dual action, more suitable for the study of the strong coupling regime, and show that it realizes a generalized Higgs-Stueckelberg phase for the (relative) (p-2)-form field dual to the (overall) BI vector. This is the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators based on duality arguments…
We present a worldvolume effective action suitable for the study of the confined phase of a (Dp,anti-Dp) system at weak coupling, and we identify the mechanism by which the fundamental string arises from this action when the Dp and the anti-Dp annihilate. We construct an explicit dual action, appropriate for the strong coupling regime, which realizes a generalized Higgs-Stueckelberg phase for the (relative) (p-2)-form dual to the (overall) BI vector, the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators for realizing non-perturbatively the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group. Our results prov…
We consider a brane generated by a scalar field domain wall configuration in 4+1 dimensions, interpolating, in most cases, between two vacua of the field. We study the cosmology of such a system in the cases where the effective four-dimensional brane metric is de Sitter or anti de Sitter, including a discussion of the bulk coordinate singularities present in the de-Sitter case. We demonstrate that a scalar field kink configuration can support a brane with dS$_4$ cosmology, despite the presence of coordinate singularities in the metric. We examine the trapping of fermion fields on the domain wa…
We study the geometric realization of the Higgs phenomenon in type II string compactifications on Calabi--Yau manifolds. The string description is most directly phrased in terms of confinement of magnetic flux, with magnetic charged states arising from D-branes wrapped around chains as opposed to cycles. The rest of the closed cycle of the D-brane worldvolume is manifested as a confining flux tube emanating from the magnetic charges, in the uncompactified space. We also study corrections to hypermultiplet moduli for type II compactifications, in particular for type IIA near the conifold point.
We consider D-branes at orientifold singularities and discuss two properties of the corresponding low energy four-dimensional effective theories which are not shared, generically, by other Calabi-Yau singularities. The first property is that duality cascades are finite and, unlike ordinary ones, do not require an infinite number of degrees of freedom to be UV-completed. The second is that orientifolds tend to stabilize runaway directions. These two properties can have interesting implications and widen in an intriguing way the variety of gauge theories one can describe using D-branes.
We study the confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model (often called the BFSS matrix model) and its one-parameter deformation (the BMN matrix model) numerically by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our results confirm general expectations from the dual string/M-theory picture for strong coupling. In particular, we observe the confined phase in the BFSS matrix model, which is a nontrivial consequence of the M-theory picture. We suggest that these models provide us with an ideal framework to study the Schwarzschild black hole, M-theory, and furthermore, the parameter regio…
We study large N dualities for a general class of N=1 theories realized on type IIB D5 branes wrapping 2-cycles of local Calabi-Yau threefolds or as effective field theories on D4 branes in type IIA brane configurations. We completely solve the issue of the classical moduli space for N=2, U(N_1)x ... x U(N_n) theories deformed by a general superpotential for the adjoint and bifundamental fields. The N=1 geometries in type IIB and its T-dual brane configurations are presented and they agree with the field theory analysis. We investigate the geometric transitions in the ten dimensional theories …
We obtain finite-temperature M2 black branes in 11-dimensional supergravity, in a $G_4$-flux background whose self-dual part approaches a solution of Cvetič, Gibbons, Lü, and Pope, based upon Stenzel's family of Ricci-flat Kähler deformed cones. Our solutions are asymptotically $AdS_4$ times a 7-dimensional Stiefel manifold $V_{5,2}$, and the branes are ``smeared'' to retain $SO(5)$ symmetry in the internal space. The solutions represent a mass deformation of the corresponding dual $CFT_3$, whose full description is at this time only partially-understood. We investigate the possibility of a co…
We consider the interplay between brane constructions and type IIA, IIB or M-theory geometries on Calabi-Yau (CY) and G_2 holonomy manifolds. This is related to N=1 (and N=2) gauge theories in four dimensions. We first discuss simple geometric transitions corresponding to brane set ups involving orthogonal (or parallel) Neveu-Schwarz branes that approach each other. This is related to confinement and Seiberg duality in SQCD. In particular, we argue that in type IIA, a CP^1 of singularities and one unit of Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux is dual to a D6 brane wrapped on a Lens space, describing the UV …
In this work the phenomenon of charge confinement is approached in various contexts. An universal criterion for the identification of this phenomenon in Abelian gauge theories is suggested: the so-called spontaneous breaking of the brane symmetry. This local symmetry has its most common manifestation in the Dirac string ambiguity present in the electromagnetic theory with monopoles. The spontaneous breaking of the brane symmetry means that the Dirac string becomes part of a brane invariant observable which hides the realization of such a symmetry and develops energy content in the confinement …
By constructing the configuration of D3-branes with D(-1)-branes as D-instantons, we study the three-dimensional Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theory in holography. Due to the presence of the D-instantons, the D7-branes with discrepant embedding functions are able to be introduced in order to include the fundamental fermions (as flavors) and the Chern-Simons term (at very low energy) in the dual theory. The vacuum structure at zero temperature is studied in the soliton background and it illustrates the topological phase transition in the presence of instantons. Moreover, since the confinement/deconf…
We propose a new approach towards the understanding of confinement. Starting from an anisotropic five dimensional pure gauge theory, we approach a second order phase transition where the system reduces dimensionally. Dimensional reduction is realized via localization of the gauge and scalar degrees of freedom on four dimensional branes. The gauge coupling deriving from the brane Wilson loop observable runs like an asymptotically free coupling at short distance, while it exhibits clear signs of string formation at long distance. The regularization used is the lattice. We take the continuum limi…
This work focuses on an unexplored aspect of non-symmetric geometry where {\it only} the off-diagonal metric components along the extra dimension, in a 5-dimensional spacetime, are non-symmetric. We show that the energy densities of the stationary non-symmetric models are similar to that of brane models thereby mimicking the thick-brane scenario. We find that the massive test particles are confined near the location of the brane for both growing and decaying warp factors. This feature is unique to the non-symmetric nature of our model. We have also studied the dynamical models where standard 4…
We show that the confinement-deconfinement phase transition of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with 16 supercharges in various dimensions can be realized through the Hawking-Page phase transition between the near horizon geometries of black Dp-branes and BPS Dp-branes by removing a small radius region in the geometry in order to realize a confinement phase, which generalizes the Herzog's discussion for the holographic hard-wall AdS/QCD model. Removing a small radius region in the gravitational dual corresponds to introducing an IR cutoff in the dual field theory. We also discuss the Hawking…
A globally consistent treatment of linearized gravity in the Randall-Sundrum background with matter on the brane is formulated. Using a novel gauge, in which the transverse components of the metric are non-vanishing, the brane is kept straight. We analyze the gauge symmetries and identify the physical degrees of freedom of gravity. Our results underline the necessity for non-gravitational confinement of matter to the brane.
A family of deformed black branes is employed to examine the confinement/deconfinement phase transition in AdS/QCD. The holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) plays the role of the order parameter driving the confinement/deconfinement phase transition. The binding energy of quark-antiquark bound states and the critical length that makes a null variation of the HEE, together with the critical temperature separating the deconfined quark-gluon plasma to the confined hadronic phase, are discussed in the deformed black brane background, matching current experimental hadronic data.
A relation between confinement and Maldacena conjecture is briefly discussed. The gauge symmetry enhancement for two coincident D-6-branes is analyzed from the viewpoint of the hypermultiplet low-energy effective action given by the N=2 supersymmetric non-linear sigma-model with the Eguchi-Hanson (ALE) target space.
Here we analyse the low energy confining phase of the $2+1$ dimensional quenched QCD-like theory in anisotropic non-supersymmetric D$2$ brane background with the holographic approach. Two key features of QCD -- flux-tube tension and mass spectrum of pseudoscalar glueball are studied. The non-supersymmetric D$2$ branes with anisotropy in time direction are considered as the gravity theory. Tuning the anisotropic parameter, we get the Hawking-Page transition in the gravity background. On the dual theory, this refers the confinement-deconfinement phase transition. Using the Wilson loop, the linea…
A model is constructed for the confinement of test particles moving on a brane. Within the classical framework of this theory, confining a test particle to the brane eliminates the effects of extra dimensions, rendering them undetectable. However, in the quantized version of the theory, the effects of the gauge fields and extrinsic curvature are pronounced and this might provide a hint for detecting them. As a consequence of confinement the mass of the test particle is shown to be quantized. The condition of stability against small perturbations along extra dimensions is also studied and its r…
We probed Maldacena-Nunez solution in IR with p coincident anti D3 branes and found that these probe branes become a fuzzy NS5 brane. Doing the dual analysis i.e. from the NS5 brane point of view with the charge of p anti D3 brane on the world-volume of NS5 brane, we showed that to leading order this potential matches with that of p anti D3 branes and the potential on the NS5 brane has a stable minima and have also calculated the potential, from the NS5 brane point of view, for a small fluctuation along the radial direction.
We consider the couplings induced on the world-volume field theory of D3-branes at local toric Calabi-Yau singularities by euclidean D3-brane (E3-brane) instantons wrapped on (non-compact) holomorphic 4-cycles. These instantons produce insertions of BPS baryonic or mesonic operators of the four-dimensional ${\cal{N}}=1$ quiver gauge theory. We argue that these systems underlie, via the near-horizon limit, the familiar AdS/CFT map between BPS operators and D3-branes wrapped on supersymmetric 3-cycles on the 5d horizon. The relation implies that there must exist E3-brane instantons with appropri…
We study the dynamical localization of a massless gauge field on a lower-dimensional surface (2-brane). In flat space, the necessary and sufficient condition for this phenomenon is the existence of confinement in the bulk. The resulting configuration is equivalent to a dual Josephson junction. This duality leads to an interesting puzzle, as it implies that a localized massless theory, even in the Abelian case, must become confining at exponentially large distances. Through the use of topological arguments we clarify the physics behind this large-distance confinement and identify the instantons…
Meson spectra given as fluctuations of a D7 brane are studied under the background driven by the dilaton. This leads to a dual gauge theory with quark confinement due to the gauge condensate. We find that the effect of the gauge condensate on the meson spectrum is essential in order to make a realistic hadron spectrum in the non-supersymmetric case. In the supersymmetric case, however, only the spectra of the scalars are affected, but they are changed in an opposite way compared to the non-supersymmetric case.
$\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ is believed to have a smooth dependence on the circle size $L$. Making $L$ small leads to calculable non-perturbative color confinement, mass gap, and string tensions. For finite $N$, the small-$L$ low-energy dynamics is described by a three-dimensional effective theory. The large-$N$ limit, however, reveals surprises: the infrared dual description is in terms of a theory with an emergent fourth dimension, curiously reminiscent of T-duality in string theory. Here, however, the emergent dimension is a lattice, with mome…
We generalize our study of the tachyon condensation on the brane-antibrane system [hep-th/0403147] to the intersecting brane-antibrane system. The supergravity solutions of the intersecting brane-antibrane system are characterized by five parameters. We relate these parameters to the microscopic physical parameters, namely, the number of D$p$-branes ($N_1$), the number of ${\bar {\rm D}}p$-branes (${\bar N}_1$), the number of D$(p-4)$-branes ($N_2)$, the number of ${\bar{\rm D}}(p-4)$-branes (${\bar N}_2$) and the tachyon vev $T$. We show that the solution and the ADM mass capture all the requ…
We analyze in the spirit of hep-th/0110039 the possible existence of supersymmetric $D p - \bar D p$ brane systems in flat ten dimensional Minkowski space. For $p=3,4$ we show that besides the solutions related by T-duality to the $D2 - \bar D 2$ systems found by Bak and Karch there exist other ansatz whose compatibility is shown from general arguments and that preserve also eight supercharges, in particular a $D4 - \bar D4$ system with D2-branes dissolved on it and Taub-NUT charge. We carry out the explicit construction in Weyl basis of the corresponding Killing spinors and conjecture the exi…
We study the gravity dual of four dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory through D4 branes, as proposed by Witten (holographic QCD). In this holographic QCD, it has been widely believed that the confinement phase in the pure Yang-Mills theory corresponds to the AdS D4 soliton in gravity and the deconfinement phase corresponds to the black D4 brane. We inspect this conjecture carefully and show that the correspondence between the black D4 brane and the deconfinement phase is not correct. Instead, by using a slightly different set up, we find an alternative gravity solution called "localized soliton…
We consider a higher-dimensional hard wall model with an infrared (IR) cut-off in asymptotically AdS space and investigate its thermodynamics via the holographic renormalization method. We find a relation between the confinement temperature and the IR cut-off for any dimension. It is also shown that the entropy of $p$-branes with the number of coincident branes (the number of the gauge group) $N$ jumps from leading order in $\cal O$($N^0$) at the confining low temperature phase to $\cal O$($N^{\frac{p+1}{2}}$) at the deconfining high temperature phase like $D3$-branes ($p=3$) case. On the othe…
We propose a scenario to obtain non-trivial Yukawa coupling matrices for the quark-lepton mass generation in supersymmetric intersecting D-brane models in type IIA T^6/Z_2 x Z_2 orientifold. As an example, an explicit model is constructed in which all the four generations of quarks and leptons and two pairs of massless Higgs fields are composite. In this model non-trivial Yukawa interactions are obtained by the interplay between the string-level higher dimensional interactions among "preons" and the dynamics of the confinement of "preons".
Here we study two important properties of $2+1$ dimensional QCD -- confinement and pseudoscalar glueball spectrum -- with holographic approach. We consider the low energy decoupled geometry of the isotropic non-susy D$2$ brane. We find the corresponding gauge theory is similar to the $2+1$-dim Yang-Mills theory with the running coupling $λ^2$. At the extremal limit (i.e. BPS limit), this gauge theory reduces to the super-YM theory. From the Nambu-Goto action of a test string, the potential of a \qq pair located on the boundary is calculated. At large \qq separation it gives the tension $σ$ of …
We study the tachyon condensation on the D-brane--antiD-brane system from the supergravity point of view. The non-supersymmetric supergravity solutions with symmetry ISO($p,1$) $\times$ SO($9-p$) are known to be characterized by three parameters. By interpreting this solution as coincident $N$ D$p$-branes and ${\bar N}$ ${\bar {\rm D}}p$-branes we give, for the first time, an explicit representation of the three parameters of supergravity solutions in terms of $N, \bar N$ and the tachyon vev. We demonstrate that the solution and the corresponding ADM mass capture all the required properties an…
The Type 0 string theory is considered as a dual model of a non-supersymmetric gauge theory. A background geometry with N electric D3-branes is calculated in UV/IR regions. In this paper, we study a D5-brane around N D3-branes from the D5-brane world volume action as in the Type IIB case, and we obtain some baryon configurations at UV/IR regions.
We consider supergravity solutions of D5 branes wrapped on supersymmetric 2-cycles and use them to discuss relevant features of four-dimensional N=1 and N=2 super Yang-Mills theories with gauge group SU(n). In particular in the N=1 case, using a gravitational dual of the gaugino condensate, we obtain the complete NSVZ beta-function. We also find non-perturbative corrections associated to fractional instantons with charge 2/n. These non-perturbative effects modify the running of the coupling constant which remains finite even at small scales in a way that resembles to the soft confinement scena…
This paper extends the study, initiated by Rozowsky and Thorn [1], of gauge fields in interaction with Dirac fields living on separated parallel 1-branes. In a lightcone description, replacing static point sources by 1-brane sources allows p^+ conservation to be maintained in their presence, which simplifies the lightcone quantization procedure. Here we calculate on-shell branion scattering amplitudes through 1 loop in lightcone gauge, and thereby resolve a puzzling ambiguity encountered in the off-shell calculations of [1]. We confirm that infrared divergences cancel in properly defined scatt…
We study the T-μ phase diagram of anisotropic media, created in heavy-ion collisions (HIC). Such a statement of the problem is due to several indications that this media is anisotropic just after HIC. To study T-μ phase diagram we use holographic methods. To take into account the anisotropy we use an anisotropic black brane solutions for a bottom-up QCD approach in 5-dim Einstein-dilaton-two-Maxwell model constructed in our previous work. We calculate the minimal surfaces of the corresponding probing open string world-sheet in anisotropic backgrounds with various temperatures and chemical pote…
We study baryons in SU(N) gauge theories, according to the gauge/string correspondence based on IIB string theory. The D5 brane, in which $N$ fundamental strings are dissolved as a color singlet, is introduced as the baryon vertex, and its configurations are studied. We find point- and split-type of vertex. In the latter case, two cusps appears and they are connected by a flux composed of dissolved fundamental strings with a definite tension. In both cases, $N$ fundamental quarks are attached on the cusp(s) of the vertex to cancel the surface term. In the confining phase, we find that the quar…
We study baryon configurations in large N non-supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theories, applying the AdS/CFT correspondence. Using the D5-brane worldvolume theory in the near-horizon geometry of non-extremal D3-branes, we find embeddings which describe baryonic states in three-dimensional QCD. In particular, we construct solutions corresponding to a baryon made of N quarks, and study what happens when some fraction $ν$ of the total number of quarks are bodily moved to a large spatial separation from the others. The individual clumps of quarks are represented by Born-Infeld string tubes obtained fro…
The stringy description for the instabilities in the $RR$ charged $D_{p}-\bar{D}_{p}$ pairs is now well understood in terms of the open string tachyon condensation. The quantum interpretation presumably via the stringy description for the instabilities in the $NSNS$-charged $F1-\bar{F1}$ and $NS5-\bar{NS5}$ pairs in IIA/IIB theories, however, has not been established yet. This would be partly because of the absence (for the $F1-\bar{F1}$ case) or our relatively poor understanding (for the $NS5-\bar{NS5}$ case) of their worldvolume (gauge theory) dynamics. In the present work, using the well-kn…
We construct supergravity solutions that correspond to N Dp-branes coinciding with \bar{N} \bar{Dp}-branes. We study the physical properties of the solutions and analyse the supergravity description of tachyon condensation. We construct an interpolation between the brane-antibrane solution and the Schwarzschild solution and discuss its possible application to the study of non-supersymmetric black holes.
We study scattering of $D0$ branes in eleven dimensional supergravity (SUGRA) using the tree level four point amplitude. The range of validity of SUGRA allows us to make reliable calculations of relativistic brane scattering, inaccessible in string theory because of halo effects. We also compare the rate of annihilation of $D0-\bar{D0}$ branes to the rate of elastic $D0-\bar{D0}$ scattering and find that the former is always smaller than the latter. We also find a pole in $σ_{D0-\bar{D0}}$. We exploit the analogy with the positronium to argue that the brane anti-brane pairs form branium atoms …
Unphysical 3-form flux singularities near anti-branes have been argued to get resolved in the classical supergravity regime when brane polarisation is properly taken into account. The only example that does not seem to fit this logic is the $\bar{\text{D6}}$-brane because of a no-go theorem for well behaved supergravity solutions with negative D6 charge. In this paper we first review the existing results demonstrating how brane polarisation resolves singularities for $\bar{\text{D3}}$-branes and then we improve on the description of the polarisation of $\bar{\text{D6}}$-branes into KK5 dipoles…
The site reduction of U(1) lattice gauge theory is used to model the 0-branes in the dual theory. The reduced theory is the 1D plane-rotator model of the angle-valued coordinates on discrete world-line. The energy spectrum is obtained exactly via the transfer-matrix method, with a minimum in the lowest energy as a direct consequence of compact nature of coordinates. Below the critical coupling $g_c=1.125$ and temperature $T_c=0.335$ the system undergoes a first order phase transition between coexistent phases with lower and higher gauge couplings. The possible relation between the model and th…
A solvable current-current deformation of the worldsheet theory of strings on $AdS_3$ has been recently conjectured to be dual to an irrelevant deformation of the spacetime orbifold CFT, commonly referred to as single-trace $T\bar{T}$. These deformations give rise to a family of bulk geometries which realize a non-trivial flow towards the UV. For a particular sign of this deformation, the corresponding three-dimensional geometry approaches $AdS_3$ in the interior, but has a curvature singularity at finite radius, beyond which there are closed timelike curves. It has been suggested that this si…
We construct a supersymmetric composite model in type IIA T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) orientifold with intersecting D6-branes. Four generations of quarks and leptons are naturally emerged as composite fields at low energies. Two pairs of light electroweak Higgs doublets are also naturally obtained. The hierarchical Yukawa couplings for the quark-lepton masses can be generated by the interplay between the string-level higher dimensional interactions among "preons" and the dynamics of the confinement of "preons". Besides having four generations of quarks and leptons, the model is not realistic in some point…
We argue that global charges, such as baryon or lepton number, are not conserved in theories with the Standard Model fields localized on the brane which propagates in higher-dimensional space-time. The global-charge non-conservation is due to quantum fluctuations of the brane surface. These fluctuations create "baby branes" that can capture some global charges and carry them away into the bulk of higher-dimensional space. Such processes are exponentially suppressed at low-energies, but can be significant at high enough temperatures or energies. These effects can lead to a new, intrinsically hi…
We obtain regular deformed D2-brane solutions with fractional D2-branes arising as wrapped D4-branes. The space transverse to the D2-brane is a complete Ricci-flat 7-manifold of G_2 holonomy, which is asymptotically conical with principal orbits that are topologically CP^3 or the flag manifold SU(3)/(U(1) x U(1)). We obtain the solution by first constructing an L^2 normalisable harmonic 3-form. We also review a previously-obtained regular deformed D2-brane whose transverse space is a different 7-manifold of G_2 holonomy, with principal orbits that are topologically S^3 x S^3. This describes D2…
