Recent work by Zamolodchikov and others has uncovered a solvable irrelevant deformation of general 2D CFTs, defined by turning on the dimension 4 operator $T \bar T$, the product of the left- and right-moving stress tensor. We propose that in the holographic dual, this deformation represents a geometric cutoff that removes the asymptotic region of AdS and places the QFT on a Dirichlet wall at finite radial distance $r = r_c$ in the bulk. As a quantitative check of the proposed duality, we compute the signal propagation speed, energy spectrum, and thermodynamic relations on both sides. In all cases, we obtain a precise match. We derive an exact RG flow equation for the metric dependence of the effective action of the $T \bar T$ deformed theory, and find that it coincides with the Hamilton-Jacobi equation that governs the radial evolution of the classical gravity action in AdS.
We study defects of various dimensions moving through Anti-de Sitter space. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence this allows us to probe aspects of the dual quantum field theory. We focus on the energy loss experienced by these defects as they move through the CFT plasma. We find that the behavior of these physical quantities is governed by induced world-volume horizons. We identify world-volume analogs for several gravitational phenomena including black holes, the Hawking-Page phase transition and expanding cosmological horizons.
The $J\bar T$ deformation, built from the components of the stress tensor and of a $U(1)$ current, is a universal irrelevant deformation of two-dimensional CFTs that preserves the left-moving conformal symmetry, while breaking locality on the right-moving side. Operators in the $J\bar T$-deformed CFT are naturally labeled by the left-moving position and right-moving momentum and transform in representations of the one-dimensional extended conformal group. We derive an all-orders formula for the spectrum of conformal dimensions and charges of the deformed CFT, which we cross-check at leading or…
We study a very special class of $T\bar{J}$ deformations of conformal field theories in two dimensions. While the deformations break the Lorentz symmetry, they preserve the twisted Lorentz symmetry. The resulting theory has right-moving Virasoro as well as left-moving translation and left-moving (chiral) scale symmetry without left-moving special conformal symmetry (nor left-moving Virasoro symmetry). As in the original $T\bar{J}$ deformations, they may be regarded as an operator dependent non-local change of coordinates. We show concrete examples based on worldsheet string theory and discuss …
We study a freely falling graviton propagating in AdS in the context of the D1D5 CFT, where we introduce an interaction by turning on a deformation operator. We start with one left and right moving boson in the CFT. After applying two deformation operators, the initial bosons split into three left moving and three right moving bosons. We compute the amplitude for various energies and extrapolate the result to the large energy region. At early times, the amplitude is linear in time. This corresponds to an infalling graviton becoming redshifted in AdS. At late times, the amplitude is periodic, w…
We reconsidered the quantum gravity description of the near horizon extremal Reissner-Nordstrøm black hole in the viewpoint of the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence. We found that, for pure electric case, the right moving central charge of dual 1D CFT is $6 Q^2$ which is different from the previous result $6 Q^3$ of left moving sector obtained by warped AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ description. We discussed the discrepancy in these two approaches and examined novel properties of our result.
We study different features of 3D non-relativistic CFT using gravity description. As the corresponding gravity solution can be embedded into the type IIB string theory, we study semi-classical closed/open strings in this background. In particular we consider folded rotating and circular pulsating closed strings where we find the anomalous dimension of the dual operators as a function of their quantum numbers. We also consider moving open strings in this background which can be used to compute the drag force. In particular we find that for slowly moving particles, the energy is lost exponential…
We investigate generic n-point correlation functions of conformal field theories (CFTs), with $T\bar{T}$ and $J\bar{T}$ deformations, in terms of the perturbative CFT approach. We systematically obtain the first order correction to the generic correlation functions of CFTs with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation. We compute the out-of-time ordered correlation function (OTOC) in the Ising model with $T\bar{T}$ or $J\bar{T}$ deformation, which confirms that these deformations do not change the integrable property up to the first order level.
In this paper, we regard the $T\bar{T}$/$J\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs as perturbation theories and calculate the first order correction of the correlation functions due to the $T\bar{T}$/$J\bar{T}$-deformation. As applications, we study the Rényi entanglement entropy of excited state in the $T\bar{T}$/$J\bar{T}$-deformed two-dimensional CFTs. We find, up to the perturbation first order of the deformation, the Rényi entanglement entropy of locally excited states will acquire a non-trivial time dependence. The excess of the Rényi entanglement entropy of locally excited state will also be dramatically…
We consider D1-D5-P states in the untwisted sector of the D1-D5 orbifold CFT where one copy of the seed CFT has been excited with a left-moving superconformal primary. Despite being BPS at the orbifold point, such states can `lift' as the theory is deformed away from this point in moduli space. We compute this lifting at second order in the deformation parameter for arbitrary left-moving dimension $h$ of this class of states. This result displays an interesting universality since the lifting does not depend on the details of the superconformal primary; it depends only on the dimension. In the …
Using target space null reduction of the Polyakov action we find a novel covariant action for strings moving in a torsional Newton-Cartan geometry. Sending the string tension to zero while rescaling the Newton-Cartan clock 1-form, so as to keep the string action finite, we obtain a non-relativistic string moving in a new type of non-Lorentzian geometry that we call $U(1)$-Galilean geometry. We apply this to strings on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ for which we show that the zero tension limit is realized by the Spin Matrix theory limits of the AdS/CFT correspondence. This is closely related to limits of …
$J\bar T$-deformed CFTs provide an interesting example of non-local, yet UV-complete two-dimensional QFTs that are entirely solvable. They have been recently shown to possess an infinite set of symmetries, which are a continuous deformation of the Virasoro-Kac-Moody symmetries of the seed CFT. In this article, we put forth a definition of primary operators in $J\bar T$-deformed CFTs on a cylinder, which are singled out by having CFT-like momentum-space commutation relations with the symmetry generators in the decompatification limit. We show -- based on results we first derive for the case of …
We study $T\bar T$ deformations of 2d CFTs with periodic boundary conditions. We relate these systems to string models on $\mathbb{R}\times {S}^1\times{\cal M}$, where $\cal M$ is the target space of a 2d CFT. The string model in the light cone gauge is identified with the corresponding 2d CFT and in the static gauge it reproduces its $T\bar T$ deformed system. This relates the deformed system and the initial one by a worldsheet coordinate transformation, which becomes a time dependent canonical map in the Hamiltonian treatment. The deformed Hamiltonian defines the string energy and we express…
In this paper, we investigate the correlation functions of the conformal field theory (CFT) with the $T\bar{T}$ deformation on torus in terms of perturbative CFT approach, which is the extension of the previous investigations on correlation functions defined on a plane. We systematically obtain the first order correction to the correlation functions of the CFTs with $T\bar{T}$ deformation in both operator formalism and path integral language. As a consistency check, we compute the deformed partition function, namely the zero-point correlation function, up to the first order, which is consisten…
The $T\bar{T}+Λ_2$ deformation of a Holographic CFT on a cylinder (or torus in Euclidean signature) inhabits the stretched cosmological horizon in dS$_3$ when the deformation parameter is tuned to a particular value. I will describe how this insight allows us to compute the entropy of the stretched cosmic horizon including the logarithmic correction.
We show that $T \bar T, J \bar T$ and $J T_a$ - deformed classical CFTs possess an infinite set of symmetries that take the form of a field-dependent generalization of two-dimensional conformal transformations. If, in addition, the seed CFTs possess an affine $U(1)$ symmetry, we show that it also survives in the deformed theories, again in a field-dependent form. These symmetries can be understood as the infinitely-extended conformal and $U(1)$ symmetries of the underlying two-dimensional CFT, seen through the prism of the "dynamical coordinates" that characterise each of these deformations. W…
We show that the $T \bar T$ deformation of conformal field theories whose entropy grows as $S(E) \sim E^γ$ for $γ> 1/2$ exhibits negative specific heat in its microcanonical thermodynamic function $S({\cal E})$. We analyze the large $N$ symmetric product CFT as a concrete example of a CFT with this property and compute the thermodynamic functions such as $S({\cal E})$ and ${\cal E}(T)$. The negative specific heat in the microcanonical data is interpreted as signaling the first order phase transition when the system is coupled to a heat bath.
We give a short introduction to and a partial review of the work on the calculation of Wilson loops and $Q\bar Q$-potentials via the conjectured AdS/CFT duality. Included is a discussion of the relative weight of the stringy correction to the target space background versus the correction by the quantum fluctuations of the string world sheet.
We study two dimensional conformal field theory with a left-moving conserved current $J$, perturbed by an irrelevant, Lorentz symmetry breaking operator with the quantum numbers of $J\bar{T}$, using a combination of field and string theoretic techniques. We show that the spectrum of the theory has some interesting features, which may shed light on systems of interest for holography and black hole physics.
Global symmetries play an important role in classifying the spectrum of a gauge theory. In the context of the AdS/CFT duality, global baryon-like symmetries are specially interesting. In the gravity side, they correspond to vector fields in AdS arising from KK reduction of the SUGRA p-form potentials. We concentrate on the AdS_4/CFT_3 case, which presents very interesting characteristic features. Following arXiv:1004.2045, we review aspects of such symmetries, clarifying along the way some arguments in that reference. As a byproduct, and in a slightly unrelated context, we also study Z-minimiz…
In this article we probe the proposed holographic duality between $T\bar{T}$ deformed two dimensional conformal field theory and the gravity theory of $\rm AdS_3$ with a Dirichlet cutoff by computing correlators of energy-momentum tensor. We focus on the large central charge sector of the $T\bar{T}$ CFT in a Euclidean plane and in a sphere, and compute the correlators of energy-momentum tensor using an operator identity promoted from the classical trace relation. The result agrees with a computation of classical pure gravity in $\rm AdS_3$ with the corresponding cutoff surface, given a hologra…
Moving from the mirror theory Bethe-Yang equations proposed by Arutyunov and Frolov, we derive the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations which should control the spectrum of the planar $\text{AdS}_5/\text{CFT}_4$ correspondence. The associated set of universal functional relations (Y-system) satisfied by the exponentials of the TBA pseudoenergies is deduced, confirming the structure inferred by Gromov, Kazakov and Vieira.
In this work, we study the holographic entanglement entropy of two dimensional $T\bar{T}$-deformed conformal field theory. We compute the correction due to the deformation up to the leading order of the deformation parameter in the framework of New massive gravity, General minimal massive gravity, and Exotic general massive gravity. We also apply Song's prescription to obtain the entanglement entropy for deformed theories. In each cases, we find agreement between the results.
The stress-energy tensor of a quark moving through a strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma is evaluated using gauge/string duality. The accuracy with which the resulting wake, in position space, is reproduced by hydrodynamics is examined. Remarkable agreement is found between hydrodynamics and the complete result down to distances less than 2/T away from the quark. In performing the gravitational analysis, we use a relatively simple formulation of the bulk to boundary problem in which the linearized Einstein field equations are fully decoupled. Our analysis easily generalizes t…
Baryonic matter is notoriously difficult to deal with in the large-N limit, as baryons become operators of very large dimension with N fields in the fundamental representation. This issue is also present in gauge/gravity duals as baryons are described by very heavy localized objects. There are however alternative large-N extrapolations of QCD where small baryonic operators exist and can be treated on an equal footing to mesons. We explore the possibility of turning on a finite density of "light" baryons in a theory with a hadronic mass gap using a gauge/gravity construction based on the D3/D7 …
We study the breaking of baryonic symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence for D3 branes at Calabi-Yau three-fold singularities. This leads, for particular VEVs, to the emergence of non-anomalous baryonic symmetries during the renormalization group flow. We claim that these VEVs correspond to critical values of the B-field moduli in the dual supergravity backgrounds. We study in detail the C^3/Z_3 orbifold, the cone over F_0 and the C^3/Z_5 orbifold. For the first two examples, we study the dual supergravity backgrounds that correspond to the breaking of the emerging baryonic symmetries an…
In this paper we study string theory in the background $\mathcal{M}_3$ that interpolates between $AdS_3$ in the IR and linear dilaton spacetime $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}\times\mathbb{R}_ϕ$ in the UV. Via holographic duality this background corresponds to $\rm{CFT}_2$ deformed by a dimension $(2,2)$ operator. Here we discuss the holographic Wilson loop in such a model and shed more light in support of the non-local structure of the theory (Little String Theory (LST)) in the UV. We also discuss quantum and thermal phase transitions of the boundary theory.
We present a new exact treatment of $T\bar{T}$ deformed 2D CFT in terms of the worldsheet theory of a non-critical string. The transverse dimensions of the non-critical string are represented by the undeformed CFT, while the two longitudinal light-cone directions are described by two scalar fields $X^+$ and $X^-$ with free field OPE's but with a modified stress tensor, arranged so that the total central charge adds up to 26. The relation between our $X^\pm$ field variables and 2D dilaton gravity is indicated. We compute the physical spectrum and the partition function and find a match with kno…
We find that the drag force for a heavy quark moving through N=4 SU(N_c) supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma is generally enhanced by the leading correction due to finite 't Hooft coupling. For a bottom quark, the drag force increases by about 50%, whereas for a charm quark it increases by about 5%. We also discuss the drag force for the case of Gauss-Bonnet gravity.
We study the gravity duals of symmetry-breaking deformations of superconformal field theories, AdS/CFT dual to Type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x Y where Y is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold. In these vacua both conformal invariance and baryonic symmetries are spontaneously broken. We present a detailed discussion of the supergravity moduli space, which involves flat form fields on asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau manifolds, and match this to the gauge theory vacuum moduli space. We discuss certain linearised fluctuations of the moduli, identifying the Goldstone bosons associated with spontaneous b…
In this paper we explore how to describe a bulk moving particle in the dual conformal field theories (CFTs). One aspect of this problem is to construct the dual state of the moving particle. On the other hand one should find the corresponding operators associated with the particle. The dynamics of the particle, i.e., the geodesic equation, can be formulated as a Hamiltonian system with canonical variables. The achievements of our paper are to construct the dual CFT states and the operators corresponding to the canonical variables. The expectation values of the operators give the expected solut…
We consider baryon vertices within the gauge/gravity correspondence for a class of curved backgrounds. The holographic description based on the N=4 SYM theory for SU(N) allows classical solutions representing bound states of k-quarks with k less than or equal to N. We construct the corresponding classical configurations and perform a stability analysis. We present the details for the theory at the conformal point and at finite temperature and show that there is a critical value of k, below which there is instability. This may also arise when the baryon reaches a critical size. We also extend o…
Recently, a non-local yet possibly UV-complete quantum field theory has been constructed by deforming a two-dimensional CFT by the composite operator $J \bar T$, where $J$ is a chiral $U(1)$ current and $\bar T$ is a component of the stress tensor. Assuming the original CFT was a holographic CFT, we work out the holographic dual of its $J \bar T$ deformation. We find that the dual spacetime is still AdS$_3$, but with modified boundary conditions that mix the metric and the Chern-Simons gauge field dual to the $U(1)$ current. We show that when the coefficient of the chiral anomaly for $J$ vanis…
This is an introduction to the microscopic techniques of non-rational bulk and boundary conformal field theory which are needed to describe strings moving in non-compact curved backgrounds. The latter arise e.g. in the context of AdS/CFT-like dualities and for studies of time-dependent processes. After a general outline of the central concepts, we focus on two specific but rather prototypical models: Liouville field theory and the 2D cigar. Rather than following the historical path, the presentation attempts to be systematic and self-contained.
We derive the geodesic equation for determining the Ryu-Takayanagi surface in $AdS_3$ deformed by single trace $μT \bar T + \varepsilon_+ J \bar T + \varepsilon_- T \bar J$ deformation for generic values of $(μ, \varepsilon_+, \varepsilon_-)$ for which the background is free of singularities. For generic values of $\varepsilon_\pm$, Lorentz invariance is broken, and the Ryu-Takayanagi surface embeds non-trivially in time as well as spatial coordinates. We solve the geodesic equation and characterize the UV and IR behavior of the entanglement entropy and the Casini-Huerta $c$-function. We comme…
Within the classical approximation we calculate the static $Q\bar Q$ potential via the AdS/CFT relation for nonzero temperature and arbitrary internal orientation of the quarks. We use a higher order curvature corrected target space background. For timelike Wilson loops there arises a critical line in the orientation-distance plane which is shifted to larger distances relative to the calculation with uncorrected background. Beyond that line there is no $Q\bar Q$-force. The overall vanishing of the force for antipodal orientation known from zero tempera ture remains valid. The spacelike Wilson …
We calculate the torus partition sum of a general $CFT_2$ with left and right moving conserved currents $J$ and $\bar J$, perturbed by a combination of the irrelevant operators $T\bar T$, $J\bar T$ and $T\bar J$. We use string theory techniques to write it as an integral transform of the partition sum of the unperturbed CFT with chemical potentials for the left and right moving conserved charges. The resulting expression transforms in the right way under the modular group, and reproduces the known spectrum of these models. We also derive a formula for the partition function of deformed $CFT_2$…
We consider the weighted average of a two dimensional CFT, whose target space is $T^2$, over its Narain moduli space. We take as the weighing function the integral kernel which gives rise to $T \bar T$ deformation when applied to the world sheet moduli data of the partition function viewed as vacuum amplitude when the world sheet is a torus. We compute the smeared partition function where this kernel is applied to the target space moduli. Smearing the partition function over the parameter space of a field theory generally leads to the breakdown in the ability to write the partition function as…
A solvable irrelevant deformation of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence leading to a theory with Hagedorn spectrum at high energy has been recently proposed. It consists of a single trace deformation of the boundary theory, which is inspired by the recent work on solvable $T\bar{T}$ deformations of two-dimensional CFTs. Thought of as a worldsheet $σ$-model, the interpretation of the deformed theory from the bulk viewpoint is that of string theory on a background that interpolates between AdS$_3$ in the IR and a linear dilaton vacuum of little string theory in the UV. The insertion of the operator …
We study a toy model of the Kerr/CFT correspondence using string theory on AdS$_3 \times S^3$. We propose a single trace irrelevant deformation of the dual CFT generated by a vertex operator with spacetime dimensions (2,1). This operator shares the same quantum numbers as the integrable $T\bar{J}$ deformation of two-dimensional CFTs where $\bar{J}$ is a chiral $U(1)$ current. We show that the deformation is marginal on the worldsheet and that the target spacetime is deformed to null warped AdS$_3$ upon dimensional reduction. We also calculate the spectrum of the deformed theory on the cylinder…
We provide a detailed map between wrapped D3-branes in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) backgrounds and dibaryon operators in the corresponding conformal field theory (CFT). The effective five dimensional action governing the dynamics of AdS space contains a $U(1)_R$ gauge field that mediates interactions between objects possessing R-charge. We show that the $U(1)_R$ charge of these wrapped D3-branes as measured by the gauge field matches the R-charge of the dibaryons expected from field theory considerations. We are able, through a careful probe brane calculation in an $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$ background, t…
We perform some simple computations for the first order deformation of the D1D5 CFT off its orbifold point. It had been shown earlier that under this deformation the vacuum state changes to a squeezed state (with the further action of a supercharge). We now start with states containing one or two initial quanta and write down the corresponding states obtained under the action of deformation operator. The result is relevant to the evolution of an initial excitation in the CFT dual to the near extremal D1D5 black hole: when a left and a right moving excitation collide in the CFT, the deformation…
Based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, we present a holographic description of various C-odd exchanges in high energy baryon-baryon and baryon-antibaryon scattering, and calculate their respective contributions to the difference in the total cross sections. We predict that, due to the warp factor of AdS_5, the total cross section in pp collisions is larger than in p\bar{p} collisions at asymptotically high energies.
The scaling dimension of the first excited state in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) satisfies a universal upper bound. Using the modular bootstrap, we extend this result to CFTs with $W_3$ algebras which are generically dual to higher spin theories in AdS$_3$. Assuming unitarity and modular invariance, we show that the conformal weights $h$, $\bar{h}$ of the lightest charged state satisfy $h < c/12 + O(1)$ and $\bar{h} < \bar{c}/12 + O(1)$ in the limit where the central charges $c$, $\bar{c}$ are large. Furthermore, we show that in this limit any consistent CFT with $W_3$ curre…
Prompted by the recent developments in integrable single trace $T \bar{T}$ and $J \bar{T}$ deformations of 2d CFTs, we analyse such deformations in the context of $AdS_3/CFT_2$ from the dual string worldsheet CFT viewpoint. We observe that the finite form of these deformations can be recast as $O(d,d)$ transformations, which are an integrated form of the corresponding Exactly Marginal Deformations (EMD) in the worldsheet Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model, thereby generalising the Yang-Baxter class that includes TsT. Furthermore, the equivalence between $O(d,d)$ transformations and marginal deform…
We study branes moving in an AdS Schwarzschild black hole background. When the brane tension exceeds a critical value, the induced metric on the brane is of FRW type and asymptotically de Sitter. We discuss the relevance of such configurations to dS/CFT correspondence. When the black hole mass reaches a critical value that depends on the brane tension, the brane interpolates in the infinite past and future between a dS space and a finite space of zero Hubble constant. This corresponds to a cosmological evolution without a Big Bang or a Big Crunch. Moreover, the central charge of the CFT dual t…
The AdS/CFT correspondence and a classical test string approximation are used to calculate the drag force on an external quark moving in a thermal plasma of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. This computation is motivated by the phenomenon of jet-quenching in relativistic heavy ion collisions.
Any two dimensional quantum field theory that can be consistently defined on a torus is invariant under modular transformations. In this paper we study families of quantum field theories labeled by a dimensionful parameter $t$, that have the additional property that the energy of a state at finite $t$ is a function only of $t$ and of the energy and momentum of the corresponding state at $t=0$, where the theory becomes conformal. We show that under this requirement, the partition sum of the theory at $t=0$ uniquely determines the partition sum (and thus the spectrum) of the perturbed theory, to…
We study U(1) symmetries dual to Betti multiplets in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence for M2 branes at Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. Analysis of the boundary conditions for vector fields in AdS_4 allows for a choice where wrapped M5 brane states carrying non-zero charge under such symmetries can be considered. We begin by focusing on isolated toric singularities without vanishing six-cycles, and study in detail the cone over Q^{111}. The boundary conditions considered are dual to a CFT where the gauge group is U(1)^2 x SU(N)^4. We find agreement between the spectrum of gauge-invariant bary…
